The O-Line

Considering that Slasson hasn't played center much in his career he did a nice job on short notice with one bad snap and one bad exchange. Charles Leno Jr wasn't a train wreck at left tackle and Omameh wasn't awful either. Kyle Long and Ducasse seem to be settling in on the right side.

Going forward I hope our 3rd round draft pick is ready to start his career since Montgomery has a broken bone in his leg( tibia?) which is an extended period injury and may signal the start of the Grasu era, if not Slausson seemed okay and I like the thought of a center with size in the middle. He also seemed good at making the line adjustments and there wasn't the wholesale blitzers running free. In the previous 3 games Matt Forte has had to choose between 2 blitzing players coming in the same gap with no success( currently the only flaw in his game blitz pick up). I figure Montgomery goes on IR and they have to bring someone in off the street.

On D Rolle was in a walking boot after the game.

Slauson had more than one bad snap.

but I understand, he has never played center before, and I dont blame him for anything.

But neither do I think that everything is fine with him at center. It'd be much better if he was back at guard, and we had a real center in there.

I read Fox's comments when he was asked directly about grasu playing and he made it sound like he isn't ready but maybe in the future

I'm going to guess we sign Garza or De La Puente.

Biggs or someone had a blurb on Grasu and it talked about how he has put on about 10 pounds since the start of training camp, but not only does he need physical strength, but their are just a ton of nuances that he needs to learn as a center that he doesn't have due to playing in the spread at Oregon. He's a project who might be ready later on. Now to Grasu's defense, he says he's ready and been training to be ready...next man up kind of a way. However, I think the Bears plan was for him to get a lot of training as the practice squad O vs. the 1st string defense. But maybe he's came along a lot faster then everyone initially suspected based upon his training camp.

Completely agree. I hate the OL switcheroo stuff. Slauson should be at OG, and a real C should be in there. I can't imagine Grassu being that bad; it's time to put him in.

Rumor is that Slausson will start at Center.

I have a feeling Grasu is going to get his chance soon but Fox isn't comfortable with him starting and making the calls on the road against KC. That's a tough place to play with all the crowd noise, and they still have a strong Dline. Omameh has been around a few years so I guess they were ok with what he did and prefer to have his experience on the field.

We have a bye in two weeks so if they want to shake it up and get the rookie in there that would be a good time to get him ready. I expect Grasu will be active for this game.

Matt Bowen commented on Grasu at practice and basically said if he sees the field this year, it would be a total disaster. Basically that their were zero scenarios where Grasu could succeed this year. Sounded like he was a boy among men. Supposedly he has been putting on strength, etc, but having a guy who was basically a "redshirt" draft pick start in KC sounds like a recipe for disaster. I agree with AZ54, Grasu will get his chance, but probably after the bye week.

If true this is condemning the pick. That would make it JA like who did very well on mid-round picks but sucked at early round picks.

Kreutz didn't start his first season and he turned out just fine. We can find other players who struggled their first season with the transition to NFL speed/power in guys like Urlacher. It takes many players a year to get the adjustment in technique, strength, and scheme. Maybe we could have found someone more prepared to help this year at Center but that doesn't mean that player would be better for our team long term.

In the preseason Grasu was getting pushed all over the field. He has been told to hit the weight room and get stronger and work on his technique. All indications are that he's doing just that and has added 10lbs. He says he is getting quite a bit stronger. I'm pretty sure his friend Kyle Long has given him a good indication of what is needed to succeed at the NFL level and the type of work a guy like Garza put in.

He needs to be competitive for the starting job next year in camp and should win it over a journeyman like Montgomery (should we bring him back). If that doesn't happen then we can start worrying. I still think we'll see Grasu this season as Fox indicated. I don't think they want him getting out of this season without experience and some idea if he is capable of being a starter. I'm not sure if that will be sooner (within the next few weeks) or late in the season.

Kreutz seemed to indicate he was in a similar position and had to really learn leverage, etc, and strengthen up when he got into the NFL (and it was why he didn't start until week 16 or so). It sounds like its a relatively common issue, especially when you draft guys from spread systems.

I disagree with the Kruetz analogy because Grasu came from the same school that produced Kyle Long. Why was Long ready on day one and not Grasu?

A lot of people though Long would be raw but Long was also a total beast athlete. Could their be other nuances between guard and center from a spread perspective? Also, one was a 1st round pick and the other a 3rd round pick.

DBDB I hear ya but 2 rounds later makes you a redshirt when you were coached by the same people? I think something else is in the mix that we don't know about!

Grasu was missing the strength and knowledge from what I understood. They wanted him to put on 20 pounds and learn the nuisances. He also showed the lack of strength early on.

Rookie C Hroniss Grasu says he took some reps with the first team at #Bears practice today.

Hey if the guy plays with a mean streak that can make up for being a little weak in the strength dept. As far as technique goes there is nothing like learning on the fly!

Next man up!!!! I saw a draft segment on him and loved it, really hope he turns out.

Omameh not practicing because of a bad ankle so right now it appears Grasu is going to get his shot. It won't be perfect and my biggest concern is our QB behind him is not able to run. Hopefully Cutler is a more mobile this week than last. I don't know where we sit on the injury rankings among the league but we have to be among the hardest hit teams. We're going to learn a lot about Adam Gase this weekend.

Youth movement forward!

It's a good situation given the bad circumstances.

Cutler, even if not 100% is still very mobile. Slauson will be next to him.

Bring it on Grassu! Kick some a$$!

Jason - President Hroniss Grasu Fan Club

I'd like to be on your staff. About friggin time we're checking out what we have. This could be brutal now, but good for the future. I'm hoping Long and Slauson have him up to speed for this test.

I nominate you Minister of Foreign Affairs. I don't know how long you've supported Hroniss Grasu, but if you got back I was a huge fan of his and wanted the Bears to draft him badly.

I thought the pick was a solid pick and really don't get the fact that he has been inactive as the only backup center. I understand the whole strength and point of attack negatives but that should have been found out on film before he was drafted or during minicamps, and OTAs before he got to TC so that he would know where he needs to improve.
