I was listening to an interview with Brock Huard. He primarily is a commentator for the PAC 12. And when asked about Williams vs Fields he asked one question. Is Fields a leader of men? The interviewer responded that he thinks so. He has the respect and loyalty of the locker room. Huard went on to say that there are college players even high school quarterbacks that can "spin" the football and they are elite athletes. But are they leaders of men.
He also spoke against the OC from seattle. He mentioned that the team should be built in the image of it's environement. The bears were the monsters of the midway. They have shown flashes that they can get there again. If Poles sticks to the plan.

I wouldn't say benefit of the doubt. I would say allow time to find stability. The bears have been known as an unstable franchise for too long. For the longest time we had GMs that primarily answered to Ted (a proven idiot) and the ownership. The addition of warren (not a proven idiot)just this year offers the suggestion that they are trying to be stable. I'm willing to be patient because Poles drafts well and Warren has yet to prove hes an idiot.

You can only go by what you know, several players have his back, Moore, Johnson, Kmet, Brisker ,all in interviews totally suported him .Those are team leaders. Hard to think a sect of the team doesnt support him and are just remaiming quiet. They have just went 4-2 in our last 6 games, that is an atmosphere of optimism, not chaos.
Agree, I don't count last year. It was obviously a tank year. I imagine that most on this board has played sports and or coached. I've done both as I am sure most have. I have also been employed as a strength coach at the university level. The idea that players will love you when you win is so fragile. Again, I am an idiot as all of us are. But I have seen and listened to players behind the scenes. How you win is important. Will Williams on the roster foster wins as a team or will he be a look at me dude. Look at how team mates of wilson (a winner) felt about him. The chicago fan base will love him if they win. But if he is a look at me dude his mantle will get heavier. If you want to know how Williams reacts when the Mantle is heavier just re watch his games from the Utah game last year and his games this year. If a player can't handle the mantle then we will be right back here in a few years.

I've watched full games of Maye, and the qb out of LSU. Those are the only ones I imagine we would even consider and I have compared them with Fields. Obviously I am an idiot armchair quarterback evaluator. However, for the haul that the number one would get. We could build an amazing roster with future assets. With fields and a better O.C. I believe we are a playoff team. Get a haul this year and next to add with free agents, we are a good playoff team.

Respect in the locker room is big.
Fields has the respect of his locker room. Both offense and defense. As I watch mahomes melting down this season I think there are only a few people that can lead by yelling at players. The only one that is still playing is Aaron Rodgers. Manning could and Brady could. Fields is a different kind of leader. I watched Caleb melt down last year and I saw different games where he melted down this year. One in particular he had painted his nails to say "F#%K UTAH." He then lost that game. Then fast forward to this year. The pouting, the off the field comments, the blaming... Do you want that as the quarter back?

Sure Caleb can be a quarterback we win because of. But the risk is high. Chicago is rough. A player has to be resilient. Caleb has not shown any signs that he is resilient.
I also find it funny that his replacement in the bowl game yesterday against a ranked opponent had 23/33 372 yds and 6 tds. Seems like a QB friendly system.
Fields is a guy we can win with and worse case scenario if we continue to build this roster he is someone we can win in spite of.

I've watched enough full games of both quarterbacks to see that chicago will have growing pains with both Maye and Williams. I look at Stroud and Young. Stroud has enough talent around him and the right mindset, to succeed. Let's check back on him in year two. Young has a good mindset but no talent around him. Thank you Poles. Genius move (DJ, Forman). I am using "mindset" as an umbrella term to cover body language, interviews.... Caleb's mindset scares me. Both body language and interviews are bad. He has endorsement money, NIL money... Meaning he is being rewarded for losing and having a bad mindset. He is the type to blame linemen, bad route running, coaching staff when he gets to NFL.... aka Kyler Murray. Ironically enough same college coach. Maye has more talent but he is 21. I think it will take him time (years)to get the speed of the NFL.
With all that being said I am moving more towards holding onto Fields. We pick up his 5th year.
DRAFT- I see us holding onto the 4th pick. Both arizona and New England aren't showing they can win to finish out season. I think New england is tanking.
I agree with Mongo that teams will be reticent to trading up or giving the haul we would like.

#4 Olu. If he's gone and no good trade down offers? I go with Bowers. I know we have Kmet but Kmet is not the same type of tight end. He is more inline. Watch how much bowers goes in motion and lines up in the slot. He's a weapon.

If I am recalling the specifics incorrectly, please set me straight. However, I remember that Poles was given a list of coaches to interview by George. If that is true, the GM can't be 100% responsible for the coaching hire. I thought poles did a decent job of drafting. If Eberflus brought in his staff then he has to go. DC did something sketchy or he wouldn't have "resigned". Luke's only claim to fame is he coached an already polished quarterback. Definitely FIRE eberflus. I doubt anything will happen until after the commander game. We then have 10 days off.

Dalton is good. Not a first rounder. Watched several games. Has an injury history that should drop him into the second. Also, he wasn't even the primary tight end target until Brant Kiethe went down in September. Utah has a mobile quarterback. Not as mobile as Justin of course. But, he would fit in well.

Like Mazi. If we get the haul that is anticipated with trading down from the number 1 and we pick up an early second. I would look at Siaki Ika. I've watched him since high school. He has gotten faster and stronger. Same mold as Haloti Ngata. A true 1 technique block eater. If we get DaRon Payne, we need someone to gobble up double teams and be a run stopper. The only edge I would give to Mazi is that he is a two time academic honoree.

I agree with the idea of a "move" TE. I've watched a ton of games of Dalton Kinkaid. He should be available to us at the end of the second round. He didn't play in the rose bowl and his absence was obvious.

Every year as the draft gets closer the hype on quarterbacks intensifies and the bears are always needing a quarterback, I look back to a list that Bill Parcels made as it relates to drafting a quarterback.
1. 3 year starter
2. Be a senior
3. Graduate from college
4. start 30 games
5. win 23 games
6. post a 2-1 td to int ratio
7. >60% completion
By that list most quarterbacks wouldn't get drafted. Chicago is not like Jacksonville. It is an intense football market. So I took 3 things from that list that I would imagine are important.

Pro days and combine can be prepared for. FILM, FILM, FILM. What have they done? Have they improved? I am not saying that I only want Kellen Mond. I am saying that are we using up good years from a good defense to sit a quarterback? Because everyone of these quarterbacks outside of Trevor Lawrence, should sit for at least a year.

Also, Watson has a not trade clause. So he can have a list of where he would want to go. If Houston let him go they would seem to be in a rebuild mode. In that sense they would clean some house and get rid of JJ as well. In a rebuild a place holder quarterback might be what houston would look for. Foles fits that mold. Bridgewater has more years on his contract and Garrapolo still makes a healthy amount. Right now the NFC west is a buzz saw. The NFC north not so much. I would be surprised if Watson left and even more if he wanted chicago.

there are some emotional cuts that I would make. However, this is a business. As much as I would like to cut idiots like Wims and Miller. Their money is too team friendly to cut. Others like Coward are easy cuts to make.
Biggest silver lining to this season is we have found a dependable kicker.

#1- not because I want it but because Pace has put the bears in a situation that is very tough to get out of with Foles. Bring back Mitch on the cheap 3 year deal while the draft pick is being groomed.
#2- except no late rounder. We have so many holes to fill in other positions.
Tony Romo said something in the game yesterday that rings as common sense. He said that if you don't have anything better available, then we should keep what we have. From the bears standpoint, we owe too much money to Foles to do anything outside of trading him. As of right now we have no cap room. So a good free agent is all but out of the question. The problem for Mitch is that his options for starting are almost zero. The only options I can see are Detroit, Houston (if Watson leaves) and maybe New England. Every other team is either drafting a quarter back or has recently drafted a quarterback.

The game against the saints only reinforced what I knew going into this season. After the draft and free agency I knew the bears would struggle on offence. A good scheme can hide a bad offensive line. This play calling exposes it. To not address the offensive line is just horrible. Drafting 7th round guys that can't make it out of camp doesn't qualify for addressing the line. The commentator for the game on saturday made a truly damning comment. With the one long run from montgomery the commentator said how shocked David must be to see so much grass in front of him and he hadn't seen so much grass all season.
Last season they let some staff go. With the same problems persisting the question is scheme or personel. If it is scheme, Nagy has to go. If it is personel, Pace has to go.

I agree that it is a great deal. Cam Newton scares me to death. Dude can't even type normal on twitter. No thank you. Andy Dalton also made me nervous. To me, Foles is an ideal option. He isn't brash enough to come in and declare it his team. I do think he will beat Mitch. I hope Mitch is better for it.

I am very uneasy with Pace saying that Trubisky is the quarterback going into next year. I understand firing the O-line coach and the "OC". I am looking at the quarterback position. I am making the following argument as a potential win/win/win aka cover our ass scenario
Trubisky-we can blame the play calling, o-line, running game, blah blah blah. Truth is this result is not entertaining. And this teams sole purpose is to distract us from reality and entertain us.

I never liked Cutler because he just didn't look like he cared. Trubisky I think my be a little too soft. Pace isn't done with him. Would it be so bad, as many have said to bring in a vet to challenge him (he'll lose). The vet that I have in mind can MAYBE show him something. Draft a quarterback to develop. So here is the win/win/win
WIN- (this year)vet beats out trubisky. Mitch sits/watches/stews/earns his damn job.
WIN- (next year) mitch MAYBE wins job back
WIN-(2 years) developed quarterback challenges Mitch.
The vet I keep coming back to is Philip Rivers.

I am being realistic with this one. Yes, the interceptions are bad. Picking up Mariotta just doesn't make sense to me. Rivers is a tough and proven winner. All the other free agents we can't afford or would make a natural PR transition for Mitch potentially getting the job back.
Drafting a quarterback in the latter rounds will be there. Especially if we look at them as a project. With that in mind I would continue with the idea of drafting mobile quarterbacks that have more starting experience than Mitch did.

I agree and disagree.
I agree that it is possible to win with Mitch. Good scheme and good coaching can fix a lot of our problems. I think Nagy is too cute. His style would work with a mahomes, wilson, or Lamar type of player, if Mitch is indeed compared to Alex Smith.
For example:
against the Rams:
Mitchell Trubisky was pressured on just 5 of 44 dropbacks (11%). Trubisky had little success throwing to his left compared to right.
LEFT: 5/10, 40 yards, INT (20.8 passer rating)
RIGHT: 13/21, 104 yards, TD (90.2 passer rating)against the Lions:
Mitch was sacked 5 times however, LEFT: 5/8. 4/5 Completions 11 yards and under RIGHT: 9/12 with only 2 completions over 20 yds.
Is this a player problem or a scheme/coaching problem?
I disagree in that we can't win with Mitch if the scheme remains the same

Anyone wanting Kapernick just has to listen to Ray Lewis and when the Ravens were working on a possible deal for him. He is a side show at this point. His agenda takes front seat to his ability.
It is a horrible sign after an atrocious London showing with the raiders, with a bye week, all we have to show at home is that steaming pile we saw yesterday. Mitch looks very unsure of himself. Shorting so many throws and then overthrowing the deeper throws.

By that criteria Mitch only reached 2 of the 7 and shouldn't have been a pick for us. Pace is good to very good at evaluating talent as free agents and non quarterback draftees. However, he is not good with quarterbacks so far. I don't feel like Nagy is the problem. I would give Mitch one to two more games to show something. If we are in the same place, then I would be happy to give the season to Chase Daniels. Look to trade Mitch if possible and draft someone that is a more realistic quarterback. I have a suggestion that meets almost all of Bills' criteria.

Frohm( georgia)--no--not anything special
Joe Borrow(LSU)--yes--fulfills most criteria under Bill. Great numbers
Jordan Love(Utah State)-YES--fulfills most of the criteria. Won't have to give up picks to get him. High character.

It seems to me that by picking Trubisky with this pic that Pace is not worried about his job. This seems more like an NBA draft pick in NFL draft pick. Picking on potential. And if a general manager is willing to pick a guy this high and sacrifice so many pics for a guy that is very likely not gonna play next year, then he has little fear of losing his job next year.

Why does the quarterback have to be a star? And what makes someone a star? From 2012 to 2022. There were 10 quarterbacks that were in the superbowl that were not stars. Their opponents were 5 different quarterbacks that one could say are/were stars. I know brock huard was a less than mediocre quarterback. I personally can't stand his voice. But he has seen his fair share of stars, busts and leaders of men.
