  1. I will admit he is probably the best player we could have at MLB this year, not due to his play, but the leadership qualities he would bring with a new coaching staff taking over. If he has any loyality to the Bears he would have accepted reallity and accepted the offer and he would be here. You are throwing all the blame on the Bears and Urlacher has responsibility for this as well. The Bears made him a rich man, sometimes you have to give back. Making 2 mil for you last year in the league is fair and he should have took it. I like you picture on your profile.

He made the Bears rich as well and they will continue to make money off of him when they release...commemorative this and commemorative that. I mean his high offer, the initial offer which everyone knows is just an inflated number to get things started was only 5.5 mil, so I don't think he was trying to take them for ransom. He may have even gone for 2 with incentives to get him to 3, but who knows...because this was never a negotiation.

  2. He was my favorite Bear during his prime, that is long gone. I just heard on the radio the statement where he said (I wont play for the Bears for 2 mil) comes from the logic that the Bears paid him 17 mil the last two years when he admittedly was not very good, so he deserves to be paid more now. He is full of himself and if you wish to worship him , buy a poster and take it in the bathroom and shut the door. We just have opinions , whether the Bears succeed or fail , doesn't have anything to do with what we think. You want to worship an old FORMER all pro by giving him what ever he wants to play for when it is detrimental to the team to play players for past performance. I want the team to be better, so lets start replaces the ones that dont play well anymore. I think its time to find another leader of our defense and try to be better for the next 5 years going forward. The longer we wait to replace players , the longer it takes to get to where we need to go. I don't think the defense will be any good this year whether Urlacher was here or not, but we might as well set ourselves up to be better sooner by getting started now. The coaches and the league seem to be more inline with my thinking than yours, so if I'm a moron, what label show we put on you?

Nobody said give him whatever he wants. He's not the same player and he wasn't asking to be compensated like the same player. He would've been back here for 3mil. This team is NOT going to find a better player/leader out there for that. He plays hurt and does whatever he can to be on the field and when he is injured and fights through it, he gets beat up for sucking. (All players are treated like this and I think it's ridiculous) I understand all the rage is take everything emotional out of any decision and base it on stats/productivity, but this is an emotional game. IMO you need that emotion to succeed and you need some of that emotion when making your personnel decisions. 54 at 3 million is bargain and deciding not to do it is a mistake. This was handled poorly. Clearly they didn't want him back and wanted to start fresh. If that's the direction then fine...they could have worked that out months ago, but it is insulting to basically offer him the league minimum, 1 mil with a chance to make another mil in incentives with a take it or leave it offer?? It doesn't make sense...especially if they want to run the same style of defense. I would have absolutely no issue if they brought in a new DC with a different philosophy and announced in Jan or Feb that Urlacher wouldn't be coming back. Thanks for your service and good luck, but this?? This was weak sauce.

  3. Its not about bowing down to the king, its about having a better football team. Hanging on to broken down players, doesnt make your team better. Almost all experts think he doesnt have it left anymore, it doesnt matter what you and I think, its about people that matter think.

The experts are right like 50% of the time with shit like this...so consider me an expert. Urlacher had no offseason, no preseason, some reports had him having 3 knee surgeries including 1 just 26 days before the season started. He definitely started off slow, rightfully so, but he was playing at a top level when he went down in week 13 and led the team in tackles. They'll be hard pressed to find someone of his caliber this year let alone missing out on a younger guy learning from him.

  4. Wonder what would have happened had Major Wright not destroyed Urlacher's knee in the game against the Vikings.

Sucks to see an All-Time great go out because of a contract dispute, but it was probably time. Thanks for the memories, 54.

Lovie destroyed his knee in a meaningless game so he could say he didn't have a losing season. 54 had a pro bowl year and easily could have had another pro bowl last year if not for the knee rehab. That set him back with no preseason games. He still lead the team in tackles in week 13 when he suffered a hammy. I'm not saying they should have gave him the 5, but 2.75-3 would have been doable and if he's healthy that's a hell of a bargain.

  5. You got any links for any of this?

I'm primarily looking for a definition of "control". I'm not certain if the defender "controlled" the ball long enough in the split second between when he got his hands on it first and when the offensive player got his mitts on it too.

We all know that for something to be a catch, the ball can't be moving around in a guy's grasp before he goes out of bounds. That's the "control" part. Can you show me indisputable visual evidence that the defensive player had full and unequivocal "control" before the offensive player got his mitts in there to gain "control" and "possession" simultaneously?

My point is that it happens in a split second and replay probably can't overturn it because of the back and forth nature of the players fighting over it. This would be a controversial call either way even if it was made by regular refs.

I applaud your research into it. I'm just not sure that the defensive player gained "control" before the offensive player.

Exactly. How does one determine control when talking about hundredths of a second. Initially, Tate had one hand on the ball when Jennings had 2 and I would argue control cannot be established when there are 3 hands on it. So in reality nobody had sole "control" in the air.

What is the outcome of this same exact play on a sideline?? Let's say both players feet come down in bounds before tumbling out of bounds, and the receiver had one hand on the ball the same way Tate did, do you think it would be ruled an IT?? I don't. I think it would be ruled neither player had control or possession before going out of bounds. I just can't see conclusively determining control while another hand is on the ball, which means the A.R. example above...doesn't apply.

    here's a new look... http://m.nfl.com/news/0ap1000000066164/

    Either way....it's not clear cut....

  6. Fine I'll say it.

If Cutler and Forte were healthy, the Bears were winning that game in GB. I have no idea how they'd do it, but they were going to win that game.

You're delusional. Why because the Bears held them to 14 points in the first half? It was 14-3 at halftime. Maybe it's because the Bears scored on their opening drive of the second half to make it 14-10!! Ooh we were so close for 1 minute and 33 seconds since that's all it took for GB to put up another 7. After another Bears 3 and out...GB marched 75 yds down the field and put up another 7. Now being down 28-10 and forcing the Bears to throw GB gets a pick. Takes them 3 plays to move 33 yards and score another 7. 35-10. Is this where you just got that funny feeling in your belly the Bears we're mounting their great comeback??? In desperation time...down 35-10....in the 4th quarter and with Hester getting them to the 33...it took them 6:59 and 12 plays to score. GB was so concerned that the Bears got within 3 scores that they brought Matt Flynn in the game. They didn't even let him throw the ball or GB probably would have scored again. YAY...we stopped them!!! Lets end this game feeling good and have a 13 play drive that's ends with a meaningless field goal from the 12 yard line because we can't punch it in against one of the leagues worst pass defense in the league!!!

  7. I'm sure I'll be chastised for this, but personally, I can care less what the Packers did. We are not even in their damn class right now!! There needs to be real competition for a rivalry unless there's thuggery. Packers have beat the Bears 7 out of the least 9 times they played. They are probably 3 years ahead of us and a top 5 team that had a bad day. We're paddling through shit with a couple of popsicle sticks!! Screw GB I don't care if they win and I don't care if they lose. I care that the Bears are not even an average let alone elite team in the NFL. As a Sox fan I feel the same way about the Cubs. I care as much about the Cubs losing as I do about the Padres losing. Who gives a crap. You know why fans have to relish in other teams misfortunes...it's cause their own team sucks. Keep your eye on the ball. This franchise is in shambles!!! I know all of you watched the games last week. Those are real fricken teams. I was embarrassed wearing my Bears shirt watching SF, NO, & NE because MY team hasn't been that good since 85. Yeah they went to the Superbowl in 06, but it was a tumultuous year to say the least. The NFC was shit. We had a QB controversy, RB controversy, WR controversy, Coaching blunders. If you read the boards during that year, you would swear we had a losing season. The defense bailed that team out with timely turnovers and Hester bailed the team out with timely touchdowns and starting field position with teams starting to pooch kick. There was rarely an enjoyable win. That dominant defense is gone and teams have been able to limit Hester...so what now? We have a good Defense and maybe another year before our defensive stars are on the decline but guess what...we have no fricken depth behind them. I fear the Bears will be rebuilding from scratch and we will have wasted the only franchise QB we have ever had. I have no confidence in this front office or coaching staff. They haven't given anyone any dam reason to have confidence. Be happy the Packers lost??? Please...I fuckin wish we had a year like them and like they will for the next 5!!!

  8. Why the $#%*^ would any of these guys come here and have to live with Lovie's philosophy and not their own. I don't get why Lovie has all this confidence from the top. How this teams failures over the past 8 years is not an indictment on him is beyond me. We're not talking about Walsh, Parcells, Belichick, Schottenheimer. Those are successful coaches. Those are coaches who have had assistants become successful coaches. That's a winning philosophy to stand behind. If you had one of those guys as your coach, I can understand standing pat behind their philosophy and asking the GM coming in to stand behind it as well, but we're not talking about that. We're talking about Lovie Smith. He's only hit double digit victories in 3 of his 8 years. He's a piss poor game manager. Piss poor talent evaluator. Piss poor player developer. Slow to recognize the obvious. Horrendous with the challenge flag. Terrible at clock management. The only thing that can be said for Lovie is he has the respect of his players, but he's a pretty easy coach to play for. His camps have been of the country club variety. No player is ever reprimanded, no matter how obvious or insanely idiotic the incident perpetrated happens to be. He just pretends the entire NFL viewing world is ignorant. He treats everyone the same, which is not how you rule 53 personalities. Some players motivate themselves because they are their worst critics, but others...like young, cocky, rich kids, who have been praised and treated like royalty up until now, need a little talking to...need a little discipline. You can't continue to watch them make mistake after mistake hoping they "get it"

Please tell me what makes him a good coach. Give me a player he has “coached” up? Tell me what he has done to earn such power as to help choose his own boss?

Angelo was clearly a terrible talent evaluator that struck gold a couple times. But what happens to these players after Jerry drafts them?? They go to Lovie. Lovie then has the responsibility to evaluate & remove how he sees fit. But talentless players stick around here a long time. Lazy, undisciplined players stick around here a long time. Who they hell trusts Lovie as a talent evaluator and why?? Accountability has been a bad word around Halas Hall forever.

Why would any GM want to come here and be hamstrung by this?? A GM needs to look to the future. Lovie needs to look out for himself NOW. Whose philosophy are you drafting for? Lovie’s or the GM’s? What a mess. One of the most storied and respected franchises of the NFL is a 3 ring circus!!!!!!!

  9. I saw the debbie downer title and was like this dude needs to get a clue...but ya know what...you're saying a lot of the same stuff I've been saying....minus the debbie downer part. We all have a right to be pissed at not beating that team. The Hanie stuff though...I agree with.

The Knox INT shouldn't have been. Knox just flat out sucks at going and getting a ball or preventing the defender from catching it. Yes it was an under thrown ball, but QB's under throw WR's all the time. Even an avg WR prevents that pick.

The Williams INT...no explanation needed. Not Hanie's fault and a TD taken from him.

The Barber penalty...no explanation needed. Not Hanie's fault and a TD taken from him.

The hail mary INT...shouldn't ever fricken count against a QB....he's just throwing it up for grabs and saying a prayer.

So yeah Hanie needs to improve his accuracy and pocket presence. A couple of those sacks were on him...but most were on the O Line, who reverted back to fricken week 3. They were horrible...pass blocking as well as run blocking. Barber had 14 attempts and 2 were no gain, 4 were for negative yardage and 5 were for 4 yds or less. 11 fricken plays go for less than 4 yds??? I'm not saying Hanie is the QB of the future, but he didn't play that bad considering how everyone else did. He should have had 17 points and 0 INT. They, also, had another FG attempt nullified with a delay of game that took us out of range. He's a rookie and needs a little help from the Vets, but I can't think of one that didn't let him down. This game was sloppy as all hell.

  10. The bigger question should be why was Sanzenbacher targeted so much as to even have 6 drops, when Roy is on this team? Williams is hot garbage and should have been cut long ago. I would take any young WR busting his ass to make an impression over this lazy POS. I would much rather the drops from Sanzenbacher than Williams..at least Sanz can improve...Williams just is old and doesn't give a shit.

What fricken player with his last shot, last shot to play in the NFL, comes to camp out of shape. Dude should have been dropped right there!

  11. Screw him. "Enigmatic" is not the adjective anyone cares to use when describing what many feel is the best RB to ever play the game. He can save his BS. This was a money grab, plain and simple. If he pisses on someone's grave to get there, so be it. I hope to God nobody buys this book.

Enjoyed Kass and Haugh this morning. Give them a read.

Also, here is the authors contribution to the trib, trying to pedal backwards and get some sales.

  12. Funny I just heard Michael Wright on ESPN discussing how Knox's problems are more mental. Check out the 2:25 mark He needs to get in the classroom..etc...

    Haven't we been here before...

Now I'm not overwhelmed by Roy Williams either, but until I see him run behind the defender on a slant route, I'll give him the upper hand on Knox.

  13. My point doesn't have anything to do with #1s or #2s, or with whether the mental aspects of the game are important. My point is that the Wonderlic is basically useless for telling whether a guy is football smart.

As a measure of football intelligence, the Wonderlic is wrong as often as it's right. Iglesias did great on it and then couldn't learn the playbook. Nicks, Harvin, and Crabtree did badly and then learned their playbooks no problem. Those aren't guys who had to catch up mentally, or who were getting by on their physical talents. They were ready to go as rookies, mentally and physically, right off the bat. You don't have to do well on the Wonderlic to be smart on a football field. If you don't believe me, here's a study showing no correlation at all between quarterbacks' Wonderlic scores and their performance on the field. So the average score for QBs is 24...some guys like Tom Brady (33), Drew Brees (28), and Peyton Manning (28) had good Wonderlic scores and became good QBs. But Alex Smith (40), Matt Leinart (35), and Ryan Fitzpatrick (48) had MUCH better Wonderlics and became crappy QBs. Any test that ranks Alex Smith ahead of Tom Brady and Peyton Manning for football smarts is probably a lousy test. And then you have guys like Dan Marino, Terry Bradshaw, and Jim Kelly (all got 15) who did badly on the Wonderlic and became great.

I mean, it's clear that Knox is running his routes wrong, I'm just saying I bet it doesn't have much to do with how he did on his Wonderlic. I'd bet that it has a lot more to do with playing his college ball at a junior college and then Abilene Christian, going against DBs who were never going to make it to the NFL. You don't have to worry about running great routes or crossing the DB's face when you can just run a streak route and blow the top off the defense on every play. Aside from their crappy Wonderlic scores, another thing Nicks, Harvin, and Crabtree have in common is facing big-time competition in college. Football smarts aside, Knox is a couple years behind those guys on the learning curve.

It's a slant route. If for some flippin reason the coaches at Abilene Christian didn't teach him positioning then the program should be shut down. But lets say they didn't...You would have to assume the Bears WR coaches taught him right?? Lets say they didn't. The first time he made the mistake in practice...surely they taught him then right?? How about the first time he screwed it up in a game? How about the second? Come on. My thoughts....I think he's been taught this since high school. It's a pretty simple route...and you shouldn't need to be told more than once..."if you do his wrong...you will cost your team" So if he's been taught over and over and is still making the same mistake...I look at that...along with his wonderlic scores...and have to think...is something wrong here or what?

Oh and I get that there could be guys that score high and suck...I already said as much. I also said the Wonderlic isn't the end all be all. I also said you could have guys with tremendous physical ability overcome a low score. What I never said anywhere was anything about the Wonderlic determining "football smarts" The questions have nothing at all to do with football. It's just a mental aptitude test. Scoring a 12 the first time and then doing worse the second time, only scoring an 11...might just be a sign that the person is a few beers short of a six-pack.

  14. Sorry man,. but to think that coach will call out a player to the media is ludacris. It will be evident by the draft and FA. This staff will never say anything to the media or any source that is negative about a player. Look how they handled Tommy harris. Big news all around but Lovie would only say Adams and Toe play warranted them a chance.

I never said they should call out a player to the media or at least I didn't intend for it to come across that way. I was saying they need to pull the player aside and talk to him...right when it happens.

Also, to defiantgiant...of course there are going to be players with high wonderlic scores that are out of the NFL. If you only have the mental and not the physical....get into coaching. I also get that sometimes an extremely gifted physical player can get away with not having it mentally. After years of repetitions he will most likely catch up mentally as well. For the ridiculously gifted, you're willing to give it that time, but ideally you want a player with both the physical and mental capabilities right off the bat. Someone like Knox, who's ceiling I see as a good 2, is not somebody a team can afford to waste time on waiting for him to "get it". Exceptions like that are made for #1's. You want your #2's and 3's to be the smart ones on the field. They need to be dependable and consistent. Right now the Bears have no #1, Knox, Hester, Bennett, Davis, DA. A little smarts out there can go a long way for the QB.

I have to imagine the first time Knox went behind the defender on the slant the coaches let him know about it...so for me that should be enough for him not to make that mistake again. Then again this could just be that "he treats me like a man" approach that these players love so much from these coaches. "Hey Johnny, you need to get in front of the db on those..ok?" You know what though, some players do their own motivation because they are their worst critics, but others...like young, not so bright wide receivers need a good talking to. More like "KNOX....KNOX...get the hell over here!! What are you doing behind the DB on that play? Do you not realize the result will be a pick every time?? That you are hanging your QB out to dry?? You cross his face on that route every god damn time...got it?? Don't let it happen again!" That's all I want. Coach these guys up...and if Knox has already been coached up...which he should have been...then why are we wasting time?? Is his level of talent so high? Is that where we are with average players now...they get a 2 years to show they can follow orders??

  15. It's nice to see a legit former star say something we've been saying all year. Knox is directly responsible for about 5 or 6 interceptions this year, but everyone seems to blame Cutler.

nice to see a star, but yeah most of us have been saying the same thing. The question is why aren't the coaches saying something. There's too much damn leniency with todays players. The first time he did that...be it practice or a game, he needed to be pulled aside and told "this will not be tolerated." I tell you what if you're getting paid a half a million dollars to do something...you should be able to learn from your mistakes the first time you're told. If he does it again...Benched. If he does it again...Cut. Simple as that really. People need to be held accountable. There are enough variables in this damn game teams have to worry about without worrying about someone doing the correct thing. A little attention needs to be paid to the intelligence of players. Not everything is about size and 40 times. You know when you're sitting at home watching the game and you say "WHAT THE HELL WAS HE THINKING???" Well a lot of times.. the answer is simply....he wasn't!! I know Wonderlic isn't the end all be all, but it's all I got...Check it out. Johnny is about as bad as you can get. Johnny Knox Abilene Christian 12/24 11/45. Most others with scores that low are out of the NFL.

So if he's already had a "talk" about this(and god hope he has) then I think we can be determine...these mental mistakes will continue to occur.

  16. Agreed 100%.

I don't, however, think that Taylor and Forte are "identical" backs (as was posted previous). They may have similar skill sets but in no way are they identical. For one thing they are obviously not the same size. And what Matrtz tried to do with Taylor later in the season (run up the gut) was what he tried with Forte earlier in the season. Forte is an edge runner and receives from the backfield. Taylor catches too but with his size, or lack of in this case, I think the intent was to get a change of pace mindset with Taylor. Problem being is the OL was unable to get the holes open early on. Hence Taylors lower numbers.

I agree with keeping Taylor around. Especially since he's received a fair portion of his money. What's the harm? See if Unga or Bell pan out and move on from there.

Can we get Taylor to bulk up into more of a fullback type??

  17. Yeah, that stat gets the person silly enough to compare free agent contracts to drafted-player contracts fired.

"Chester Taylor makes more than a 5th round running back who played in 1/4 of the season's games! Scandalous!"

I think he's comparing drafting well and spending well...not contracts.

  18. http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2011/02/08/rep...chester-taylor/

LAKE FOREST, Ill. (CBS) – A published report says the Bears are planning to release backup running back Chester Taylor before next season.

John Mullin of Comcast SportsNet reported that at age 32, Taylor’s arrow is “definitely not pointing up.”

Taylor was signed to a four-year, $12.5 million contract in March 2010, and last season averaged 2.38 yards per carry, which Comcast calls “a dreadful mark.” The Bears have already paid him $7 million, and his base salary for 2011 is expected to be $1.275 million, Comcast reported.

The Bears have not released an official comment on the subject.

What an incredible waste since pretty much all his money was paid upfront. Love this post after the article.

For what you geniuses paid Taylor ($7 million) the Pack paid Clay Matthews, Tramon Williams, James Starks, Desmond Bishop, and Sam Shields this year. 5 impact starters vs. a backup running back. If that stat doesn’t get you fired, nothing will.

  19. Thought some of you would find this amusing. This ball sells for about $80 normally, but with good ol Rexy's signature on it, it only sells for $20.

Wilson Official NFL Football - The Duke $19.99 +SH

Alright so I found this ball that normally sells on amazon for $79 [amazon.com] for $20 here [steinersports.com] the only downside is that Rex Grossman signed it so you will have to do a little work to clean it off or play with as is but it might make you throw more interceptions then you normally do.

Flate rate shipping of $8.99 no matter how many you buy.

    Post is from slickdeals.net

  20. let me ask you this... WHY have we had three offensive coordinators/systems in SEVEN YEARS? for that matter why have we had four DEFENSIVE coordinators over this same period???

does that say anything about the abilities of our head coach to be able to put together a staff of his own and evaluate the abilities of these people? look at his choices. the only portion of our entire staff that has had any consistency has been our special teams coach and he never even hired him!!!

we have changed coordinators like pairs of socks not to mention the one we had that didn't need changing (in rivera). that doesn't even include position coaches we have gone through like s&%$ through a goose.

whose shoulders does this fall on? our coach? our gm? our president? or does it fall on ALL of them?

in my opinion fisher does know how to work with a staff. he has worked and played under the best defensive coordinator in history. he has seen how strife and turmoil between coordinators works (gilbride and ryan) and how to avoid it. in fact i'm not even sure he doesn't have the chops to take over phillips job as president!!

You're making way too much sense here. I'm sold!
