  1. This is just my personal list of guys I'd contact if I were Emery:

    OT Tiny Richardson

    DT Kelcy Quarles

    CB Marcus Roberson

    LB Christian Jones

    DE Jackson Jeffcoat

    S Craig Loston

    WR Brandon Coleman

    WR Mike Davis

    CB Louichez Purifoy

    CB Chris Davis

    LB Jonathan Brown

    S Dion Bailey

    S Kenny Ladler

    DT Anthony Johnson

    LB Shayne Skov

    RB Isaiah Crowell

    RB Rajion Neal

    OT James Hurst

    C Tyler Larsen

    TE Colt Lyera

    TE AC Leonard

    TE Trey Burton

  2. Yeah, I'd actually prefer a FS/DT/DT start since I think there is a lot more depth at DT than FS.

    This would outstanding:

    1. HHCD, FS, Alabama

    2. Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame

    3. Johnson, DT, LSU

This would be awesome. Like you said, there is some great depth at DT (a rare thing) this year. If we could snag a top safety in the 1st and then they decided to go DT-DT in the 2nd and 3rd, I'd be more than okay with that.

In answer to your original question, I'd be fine with DT-DT if the 2nd rounder is an absolute steal (where someone fell unexpectedly). I wouldn't be fine if they overdraft another DT who likely could have been had later on (or just wasn't a good value at 51).

  3. 1R- Jason Verrett CB- Capable speed to play man

2R- Ra'shede Hageman DE/DT- Seen some reports saying he's an ideal 3-4 DE, and another say he can be a 3-4 NT...Wherever he plays we could use em

3R- Calvin Pryor S- Plays nnext to Ihedigbo

4R- AJ Johnson ILB- Speedy, SEC tackling machine, not sure why he's being called a 4th rounder here.

5R- Bryan Stork C- Center to compete with Boggs who the Bears like

6R- Ryan Carrenthers NT- Another monster NT

6R- L'Damian Washington Wr- Just for funzies I'll draft the 6'4" guy with 4.3 speed

To be fair, Johnson's big knock is actually his speed. He's improved it a lot, but he still struggles in coverage because he can't keep up with TE's or RB's. He is a tackling machine, though, like you pointed out. And he's a smart player who calls the defense. I'm a huge Tennessee fan so I've seen every one of Johnson's games over the last 3 years. 4th-5th round is exactly where he should be projected to go, as of now. He made huge strides in our last 4 games, though. Lots of football people say that if he can put together an entire Senior year like that, then he could improve his stock to 2nd-3rd round. I think he ultimately comes back for his Senior year.

Anyway, I just wanted to add a little insight from someone who's seen as much of AJ as anyone.

  4. What do you guys think of James Franklin as a 6th or 7th round pick(right now CBS has him undrafted but i think that's unrealistic).

Mizzu has a offense that looks a lot like ours with all their big ol receivers so there's that, and he's got some wheels to run some of the read option sets Trestman was talking about before the season.

I like Franklin a lot, but as a UDFA type. He has been injured several times in his career, and has a lot to improve on. But I love his skill set. Would be a great 3rd/practice squad guy.

For the 1st time in history, I feel confident in the Bears having a coach who can develop a QB.

  5. I don't see Nnamdi Asomugha happening, not in a million years. The guy's a pure press-man corner, he'd be wasted in a zone-heavy defense like the Tampa-2. If we're in some fantasy scenario where everybody gets fired and the Bears install a completely new defense, then sure. But given that Lovie's staying, the Tampa-2 is staying, and the whole point of that scheme is that you don't need elite man-coverage corners to run it. Meanwhile, the Bears would be competing with teams like the Jets, the Raiders, and maybe even the Lions - teams whose schemes DO demand an elite cover corner. Those guys are going to set Nnamdi's market value, and it's going to be HIGH. His last contract was worth almost $30 million guaranteed over just two years. He could potentially top that figure this time around. Paying Asomugha his market value to play in the Tampa-2 would be like hiring an MIT professor for $200,000 a year to teach your kid his multiplication tables. Sure, he'd probably be good at it, but so would a $10-an-hour tutor.

Couldn't have said it better myself... I was just about to post something very similar to this b/c everyone keeps talking about Asomugha, but it's not happening.

  6. One of my favorite days of the year. I'm a year-round draft follower, so this is like Christmas for me. I'm going to wake up around 1 on Saturday and watch draft coverage all day long. I'll eat whatever is easiest to make to maximize the amount of time watching TV, so I'll probably be making peanut butter sandwiches or something like that.

  7. As someone who hasn't missed a Tennessee home game in 3 years, I'd say that Willingham would be a good pickup no earlier than the 5th round. He played very well for us all season (as for that Alabama game: who didn't Jones abuse this year?), but would definitely be a project. He was a JUCO guy, so he's only started 1 year at a big time school. I think he has the physical ability to be a good FS, but he will definitely need some work.

  8. Joe Flacco was 100% initially supposed to be a mid-round pick. It wasn't until after the combine/private workouts that he continually rose to the 3rd, 2nd, and eventually 1st round projection a couple weeks before the draft. I'm not a huge proponent either of taking guys who rise from off-season workouts. However, our scouts and front office people know more than I do, so whoever they take I'll likely be happy with.

I really like Massaquoi, though. He produced pretty well (averaged about 16 yds/catch JR and SR year) at a big time program in the best conference in college football. Let's not forget, however, that we already have a guy in Bennett on the roster who could have a pretty decent impact in the 2nd season. If we take a WR in the 2nd or 3rd round, I think our WR corps will be pretty set, as long as we sign a decent veteran as well. Not saying it has to be Holt, who I'd love, but a solid vet would help round out the corps.

    1- Hester

    2- Bennett

    3- Veteran (Toomer, Jurevicius, Holt)

    4- Massaquoi

    5- Davis?

  9. I've seen where it will take our 1, 2, 3 this year. This was out of a NY newpaper listing the teams with enough ammo to make it happen. NYJ edges ahead of CHI b/c there a couple of spots ahead of them in the order. Detroit has the most ammo, they have to decide if they need those extra picks to rebuild and select Stafford or Cutler and some later round picks. Det will probably go w/ Stafford. Tampa is also in the running, but don't have as much ammo as NYJ/CHI.

So would it be worth it? Giving up our draft dreams of Britton/Nicks for a potential franchise QB?

Yes, absolutely. Not only is nothing is guaranteed in the draft, but more importantly, Cutler is a young, pro-bowl QB. Before playing one game he'd immediately become the best QB to ever play for the Bears in the modern-era of football.

It's even more worth it if we manage to sign Pace, further solidifying the O-line allowing us to get by at least another year or two without drafting an OT in the 1st or 2nd round. Meanwhile, we can always take a OT with our 1st or 2nd next year, allowing ample time for that prospect to develop while still having a good offensive line.

Surprise move: Bears' Tait set to retire

By Vaughn McClure | Tribune reporter

    12:39 AM CST, February 14, 2009

The Bears made plans Friday to move forward without two veteran offensive players; one departure was expected but the other will surprise many.

Starting right tackle John Tait has informed the team he is strongly contemplating retirement, and an NFL source said the team expects Tait will walk away from the final year of his contract in 2009.

That decision caught some off guard, but sources said Tait has been considering the move since the completion of his 10th NFL season because of nagging ankle injuries that affected him more than outsiders realized.

The release of wide receiver Marty Booker, the last Bears receiver to make a Pro Bowl, was expected. Booker, 32, struggled in his second stint with the team and caught just 14 passes for 211 yards.

The loss of Tait, 34, will cause a bigger shock to the Bears' system. He started all 16 games last year despite often playing through pain and has started 73 regular-season games since coming to the Bears in 2004.

If Tait officially retires as is now anticipated, free-agent offensive tackle John St. Clair will have considerably more leverage in negotiating with the Bears. The team already was expected to pursue him to compete with Tait, and now he becomes the favorite to become the starter. He has said he prefers to stay in Chicago.

"I definitely want to play tackle," St. Clair told the Tribune. "I've played tackle most of my career. I'm all for playing right tackle. Playing there again wouldn't be a problem at all. And Chicago is a good fit for me."

It was a good fit for Tait, too, since he came to the Bears as a restricted free agent from the Chiefs in 2004. His ability to switch to left tackle before the 2005 season when the Bears signed right tackle Fred Miller solidified the line on a team that went the Super Bowl in 2006.

When the Bears drafted left tackle Chris Williams in the first round of the 2008 NFL draft, Tait unselfishly switched back to the right side. His absence would make it likely the Bears will look to select a right tackle in the first few rounds of April's draft.

Tait was to make $4.8 million, and Booker's release will save the Bears another $1 million as the team prepares for the beginning of free agency Feb. 27.

The Bears also released linebackers Gilbert Gardner and Marcus Riley on Friday.

So I think it's even more likely now we'll likely take a OT in the 1st 3 rounds, or sign one in free agency at least. I've been a huge proponent of Oher if the other teams above us are idiots and don't take him.

  11. Herman Johnson sucks. Like I said in the simulator thread, he'll be lucky to go in the 4th.

    Tuesday's practice:

    Wednesday's practice:

    Both from FF.com.

I'll take my chances with a guy like Andy LeVitre (Oregon State), Trevor Canfield (Cincinnati), or Anthony Parker (Tennessee) as OG's in the 3rd.

Eh, you don't want Anthony Parker. Don't let the "experts" fool you. The guy sucks. Trust me, I go to Tennessee and haven't missed a game in 3 years. He is awful. Normally, I'd be all about taking some guys from my school, but in this case, not at all.

  12. Oher...

However, I'm still holding on to a glimmer of hope for Laurinaitis if he falls to us. ;)

I love Laurinaitis. With the current state of the team I'm not sure I'd take him, but if we make a solid addition to DE or OL, or both, in free agency, then I like the idea of taking him if he's the Best Player Available. Put him at MLB and Urlacher at SLB, which would help prolong Urlacher's career. And F*** it, I know SAM is the least prominent of the LB's in our defense, but if Brian Urlacher is your SAM, I think you make that spot important.

Oher would be phenomenal. But after the Senior Bowl and combine, he'll move back up the draft boards and out of our reach. If he did fall to us somehow, though, we'd be crazy not to take him. I know he's projected as a LT, but he could definitely play RT. We'd have bookend tackles for the next 10 years.

  13. Great point, which is exactly why mock drafts right now are nothing more than just for people's enjoyment. I mean, a lot of mocks have Michael Oher falling to mid/late 1st round, and Dan Pompei's recent mock didn't even have Oher in the 1st round. Hell, just a few months ago this guy was being as a Top 5 pick, maybe even #1.

That said, I hope he does fall b/c I would love the Bears to take this kid and solidify the tackle spot for the next 10 years. As much as I want a DE in the 1st round, if a player of his magnitude were to fall, we'd have to take him. Anyway, I can't figure out why Oher is falling. He is playing great - run blocking and pass blocking - and yet he's falling. Sometimes I just don't get these "experts." However, after the combine, I have a feeling we won't be talking about Oher as a possibility to fall to us anymore.

  14. IF Arizona were to trade Boldin this offseason, which is unlikely considering his contract status, it wouldnt be to the Bears. The Cardinals would want draft picks, not players like Vasher and Urlacher. Philly and Washington would offer more than we would plain and simple. JA is gay over draft picks and isnt the type of GM to give up 2 or more first day picks for anyone. Now think about Dan Snyder, he might be willing to give up a whole draft for Boldin, and the Eagles have already been trying and Im sure will continue to pursue a true number one WR as well.

That's all that needs to be said regarding this situation. I love how some Bears fans actually think we could trade Urlacher for Boldin. The chance of that happening is nil...
