Ditka sees no talent, no pride on Bears’ defense

Mike Ditka, the man who coached perhaps the greatest defense in NFL history with the 1985 Bears, does not like the defense he sees in Chicago this year.

Ditka told the Chicago Sun-Times that he thinks both the effort and the talent level are lacking on the Bears’ defense after the debacle in Green Bay on Sunday night.

“The defense is not good,” Ditka said. “I don’t see a lot of leadership out of certain players. I think they have a problem. Marc [Trestman] knows that as well as anybody. You can blame anyone you want for what’s going on, and usually it’s the coach. But if you have any talent at all on the defensive side of the ball, you don’t put on an exhibition like you did in the first half against Green Bay. You don’t do that. Now, if you have no pride at all, then maybe that can happen. I don’t see a lot of leadership; I don’t see a lot of pride in what’s going on. I see a lot of guys going through the motions.”

The 75-year-old Ditka has seen a lot in the NFL, but he’s never seen defense like the Bears are playing it right now. The Bears have given up more than 50 points in back-to-back games. They’re the first team to do that since the 1923 Rochester Jeffersons.
