Griese to start for TB

GRIESE IS THE GUY IN TAMPA

To little surprise, Brian Griese is now the starting quarterback of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And Jeff Garcia isn’t.

Griese led the Bucs to a 24-9 win over the Falcons in their Week Two home opener. Garcia quarterbacked the team during a 24-20 road loss to the Saints in Week One.

“You know what? He warrants being a starting quarterback in the league, period,” coach Jon Gruden said of Griese. “With that said, we don’t anticipate any changes at that position this week.”

So what is Garcia’s role moving forward? On Sunday, he was the third quarterback.

“We’ll address that. It’s going to be a long season,” Gruden said. “We’re going to need everybody on our football team. We certainly need Jeff Garcia. What his role is will be defined on a weekly basis.”

Last week, the Bucs shopped Garcia, offering him to the 49ers and others, but not offering him to the Vikings.

Gruden is unlikely, in our view, to give Garcia a shot at stardom in Minnesota. The Vikings offense doesn’t need much of an upgrade over Tarvaris Jackson to become dangerous, and Gruden surely fears giving Garcia a chance to shine elsewhere.

Griese, who was acquired by the Bucs in a trade with the Bears, is under contract for three more years. He is due to earn $1.4 million this year. Garcia, in the final year of his two-season deal, is making $2 million to do nothing.

Though we’re not members of the Jeff Garcia fan club, it’s odd that he’d be benched after only one game. The guy took the team to the playoffs last year, and they lost in Week One against a good Saints team in the Superdome. It just doesn’t seem deserved, in our view.

Then again, Garcia didn’t help his cause by bitching about his contract during the offseason. We have a feeling if he’d merely shut his mouth and prepared for the season, he’d still be the starter.

They'd never trade him to us this week, but after that...I'd give it a shot.

Gruden has denied that he shopped Garcia to anybody. If he lets Jeff go, he's making a big mistake because Griese is a hot or cold QB who gets injured very easily. My guess is that Brian will stink up it up in the next couple weeks (hopefully against the Bears) or get hurt, and Garcia will be back on the field from then on.

Idk I see Garcia as kind of a head case + he's soo old! I'd rather just keep KO unless we could find a better long term solution.

NO to Garcia, especially if we give up a draft pick. Funny how Griese "deserves to be a starter" now after Gruden dumped him after the 2005 season. The only thing you can be sure of about the QB situation in Tampa is that nobody trusts what Gruden is saying, not even his players. Standby for this carousel to pick up speed as we go through the season.
