And Bettis has a high degree of credibility in these matters. He was one of the first to proclaim with any degree of fact that 2006 would be Cowher's last season with the Steelers. "I really think this is the last year for Coach Cowher in Pittsburgh," Bettis said at halftime of an NBC preseason game between the Redskins and the Bengals in August 2006. "I talked to him after the season was over and I really think he was really a different coach, a different guy." This time, Bettis sounds even more certain. "He would have definitely gotten the [Giants] job and if [Tom] Coughlin doesn't get that team back in the right direction next year I think they'll pull the plug," Bettis told Chris Russo of Sirius XM Mad Dog Radio. We still think there's a chance the plug gets pulled this year, if the Jets end up closing out Giants Stadium by hosting the AFC title game. Report

Jerome Bettis has an idea where "The Chin" would like to jump back on. "[The Giants are] the team that he really coveted," Bettis said on Sirius XM's Mad Dog Radio with Chris Russo Thursday. "This is where he always wanted to be. The Mara family, he's been very close to them. . . . He's known them very well and was on the inside track -- before the Giants won the Super Bowl -- for that job. And I think he's holding out for that opportunity if it presents itself." Bettis probably annoyed a few folks with that quote: The Giants, Cowher, Coughlin, and NBC for not sharing that scoop back in 2008. (Oh, and the Jets for knocking them off the back page Friday.) Whether Bettis is right or not, this will only raise the tension in New York heading into the 2010 season. A Super Bowl title only buys you two years off the hot seat these days. Report

On the other hand, I see little reason to expect us to improve much, and thus we are likely to be looking for a new HC when NY is not. Cowher may like NY, but all reports had him also very interested in Chicago.
