The visiting Chicago Rush showed no mercy to host Iowa Friday night, defeating the Barnstormers 61-43 in the 2010 AFL season opener.

The Rush were led by QB Russ Michna, who threw 18-28-1 for 261 yards and an impressive six touchdowns. The Rush took a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, and scored an additional 17 in the second quarter. Iowa started their comeback attempt not long after. They dropped 22 in the second, their highest scoring quarter of the game, but it didn’t take long for Chicago’s defense to shut down their rhythm.

The Rush held Iowa scoreless in the third while tallying another touchdown themselves, taking a 41-22 lead going into the fourth. While the Barnstormers managed a 21-point fourth quarter and pulled within 10 of the Rush, they were never able to obtain a lead.

The Barnstormers tested the arm of both quarterbacks—Ryan Vena and Brian Villanueva. Vena went 18-40-3 for 245 yards and all four Iowa touchdowns. Villanueva threw 3-6-2 for 35.

Stay tuned for a more in depth analysis.
