Lmao, I just saw the "Teams at 20 report" and Rachel Nichols said that Lovie says Orton has a one game audition until they go back to Griese. ARE YOU freakin KIDDING ME? Stop with the Griese shit, he sucks, he isn't in our future. One game is hardly enough for Orton to prove anything. Lovie is stupid, that is all. Anyone else irked by his comments?
I totally believe it - and it makes sense to me. I *think* probably what Lovie said was that Orton gets one game to prove that he should get to start again and that Griese is the alternative for the following week if Orton doesn't play well enough. That seems perfectly reasonable to me.
As for the *spin* that's been applied to this, I don't believe anything but direct quotes heard in context. I recommend watching Bears Blitz so you can hear quotes for yourselves. I've seen harmless stuff spun in the papers and on radio to ridiculous proportions.

It's really too early for this sort of thing. You can't consider the draft until after you've dealt with early free agency and you can't deal with free agency until you see who gets extensions before free agency begins, who gets franchised, and who gets unexpectedly released. That being said, I'll comment on what you've got.
Future GM BearSox presents to you...CAP ROOM TO BEGIN: 14 Million (subtract 5 mil. for rookie pool) You'd better subtract $6 mil if you're planning on 11 picks
CUTS:
-Adam Archuleta (2 mil) Would only save about $1 million
-Ricky Manning Jr. (1.8mil) Would save $1.9mil
-Fred Miller (4 mil) Miller would save $3.4mil
-Terrence Metcalf (1 mil) Metcalf would add about $500k
-Darwin Walker (break even) Walker would save $6.35mil
CAP AFTER CUTS: 22.8 Million $25.15 Million
RESIGNINGS:
- Mike Brown - restructure contract to 1 year at 1 million with 3 mil. worth of incentives... possibly save 1 mil. Sounds good in theory except that in the final year of a contract, all incentives already count against the cap. You're best off leaving him with his $2.44 mil salary instead of increasing his cap hit
- Ruben Brown - resign to a 1 year deal worth 1 million with a 1.5 million bonus I'm fine with that as long as they can actually reattach his arm.
- Lance Briggs - resign to the same type of deal as Urlacher, 6 years 56 million. 13 million dolar signing bonus. Would make around 7 million first season As you describe it, that's not a deal Lance would accept. Give him a $20 mil SB and a $3 mil salary and his cap hit is about $7 mil
- Bernard Berrian - Franchise him, will cost around 7.2 million I believe - I think we'll be able to sign him to a long term deal that would give him a much smaller cap hit this year than the franchise tag
- Brandon McGowan (RFA) - give a medium tender at 712K... someone signs him, oh well, we get a draft pickThe lowest tender that would be about 900k, wouldn't give us any compensation because he was undrafted. For about $1,4 mil we could guarantee a 2nd rounder.
TRADES:
-Trade Alex Brown for an early 4th round pick (lets say 3rd overall in 4th)... saves about 1.6 million I think this would be dumb and would only save about $130k. He's our best run defender on that side. Anderson is proving to be best off the bench
-Trade our 1st round pick (lets say 12 overall) for the 20th overall pick and their 2nd round pick I'm always a fan of trading down, but it's hardly a sure thig to find a partner
OTHER:
-Receive a 4th round compensation pick for the lose of Boone and Gage, both have very good seasons I'll be shocked if we get a 7th - part of the formula for determining the comp picks has to do with the size of the contract they sign. They aren't getting paid much.
-Remember, we lost our 5th round pick but also traded for the panthers' 5th (lets say 15th overall).
-Also remember that we got the chargers 3rd round pick... lets say they are picking with the 24th pick
CAP REMAINING BEFORE DRAFT: 4.5 Million (SAVE THIS MONEY TO RESIGN HARRIS!@#$!@@!!)
DRAFT:
1-20) Chris Williams, LT - Vanderbilt
2-12) Joe Flacco, QB - Delaware
2-20) Craig Steltz, SS - Louisiana St.
3-12) Allen Patrich, RB - Oklahoma
3-24) Heath Benedict, OL - Newberry
4-03) Davone Bess, WR - Hawaii
4-12) Jonathan Goff, LB - Vanderbilt
4-CP) Lionel Dotson, DT - Arizona
5-15) Marcus Monk, WR - Arkansas
6-12) J.J. Finley, TE - Oklahoma
7-12) Jehuu Caulcrick, FB - Michigan St.
PROJECT DEPTH CHART:
QB: Orton | Griese | Flacco
RB: Benson | Patrick | Peterson | Wolfe
FB: McKie
WR1: Berrian | Bess | Hester
WR2: Muhammad | Bradley | Monk
TE: Olsen | Clark | Finley
LT: Williams | St. Clair
LG: Brown | Garza | Beekman
C: Kreutz | Garza | Beekman
RG: Benedict | Garza | Beekman
RT: Tait | St. Clar
LDE: Ogunleye | Idonije | Bazuin
RDE: Anderson | Bazuin
UT: Harris | Dotson | Idonije
NT: Dvoracek | Adams | Kennedy/Garay
WLB: Briggs | Williams | Okwo
MLB: Urlacher | Goff | Wilson
SLB: Hillenmeyer | Goff
CB: Tillman | Vasher | McBride | Graham
FS: Manning | Gattis/Payne
SS: Brown | Steltz | McGowan
ST: Gould, Maynard, Mannaley
Good effort for a hypothetical exercise although you have completely neglected free agency beyond our own players. That will determine our draft needs alot more clearly.

Does anyone else think its weird that Grossman hasnt been IRed yet or that we havent signed anyone else? Are we only carrying Orton and Griese for this game? I wonder if theres any chance Grossman isnt done for the season. We havent gotten any kind of description or timeline of his injury that I know of.
When he got injured, his prognosis was 3-4 weeks which might have him healthy for the season finale.
I read this week that he's been on the practice field throwing the ball with Pep Hamilton and that he might be the #3 QB this week.

During the game they said it was a legal hit. If he hadnt gotten hurt there would be no fine at all.
O geeeeez! Don't let reality get in the way of a good persecution complex!

If there's going to be a "who are you" thread for the people from BearsTalk to ID themselves, then as one of the mods here, I'd like to add this thread as a place for everyone to say hello. Welcome to this way of organizing the words "Bears" and "Talk"! I'm one of the guys who came over from Soxtalk when this board was created, and it'll certainly be nice to have some new minds around here to pick!
Hey Balta - What's with the 1701-A designation?
Personally, I'd be more of a 1701-D myself.

Check out the stats. There are at least 15 to 20 receivers I would consider above him. Hope he comes to his senses and realizes he is not getting top ten money.

Yeah - but the ACTUAL top 10 guys aren't free agents this year with a $116 millon cap.
Any deal that makes him a top 10 WR now, but where he won't be in 2 years, is probably a reasonable deal.
-
My problem with that statement is...we don't know how our receivers would be without him. For a couple reasons. First, we have had no running game this season, so our WR's haven't had great opportunities. Second, we haven't seen much of Hester at all. Third, our O-Line has performed so poorly, it's hard to actually tell how any of our receivers would play, because our QB's have spent half their time running for their lives or throwing from their backs.
I could understand using the Franchise tag on Berrian if you were desperate, but usually it's really hard to find receivers that are worth that and is probably going to be a lot easier to find other WR's.
There are a couple of things to remember about the situation with Berrian.
1. Because the cap has grown so quickly in the past couple of years, the top guy at any position will get a FAR better contract than the BEST players signed to contracts only a couple of years ago.
A perfect example is the Nate Clements in SF who signed the 8 year $80 million contract this past offseason. So while he's no Champ Bailey, he's still making more than anyone else at the position.
2. You have to also figure the difference in "Bears dollars" vs. the rest of the league.
With the Bears, a player actually has a good chance at playing out his contract. Whereas Nate Clements has salaries of $9m, $10.7m, and $15.5 million in the final 3 years of his contract that he will likely never see.
I think Berrian will get (from the Bears) somewhere around $15 million guaranteed on a 5 year contract worth $30 mil. On the open market, the guaranteed money will probably be about the same, but you can tack all kinds of extra stuff at the end since it's fantasy anyway. While that may sounds like alot, it's peanuts compared to what a Marvin Harrison or Chad Johnson would get in this year with this cap.

I hope everyone is enjoying their holidays ? I like the new site but it needs some of Pixs touch here and there. lol
I don't want to kicked off this site the first day so let me ask before I put a Grouchy sig at the bottom of everypost.
If the moderators could reply I would appreciate it. Thanks guys!
Actually, on the new board, there is a new rule that anyone with "Grouchy" in his name is required to have a kickin sig AND post a new one of his "lovlies" with each and every post!

Ok. How about a bit of background on the Soxtalk board? I didn't realize another group was joining us. - Not that I'm xenophobic or anything, just surprised.
I'm LT2_3. I've been around since Dabeasshrine and do salary cap stuff occasionally and hope to have some numbers soon.

I've noticed that at least one person has changed his handle/monniker.
For those that do, please post your conversion equivalencies here:
Example: I was Ghost of Bearstalk on the nflfans board and was previously and am now LT2_3.

Interesting use of the word "logic" along with a splash of revisionist history. You obviously think that teams should draft based on need regardless of whether the best guy on the board at the top need position is ranked where the team is picking or not. Even though I disagree with that concept, WR wasn't the biggest need at the time of the draft. At RB, all we had were TJ and AP while we had just signed Moose to a large contract to be our "Posession" receiver. Even if I bought that a WR was the top need, Williams would have been the wrong type. The need would have been a speedster and the top prospects would have been Troy Williamson or Mark Clayton. Mike Williams would have been redundant with the signing of Moose.
Your opinion of MW is bizarre. Before that draft, I didn't like MW at all. In fact, I believe I said something along the lines of "Mike Williams won't make it in the NFL as a WR with his inability to keep weight off. He's young and his frame can handle extra weight too easily. He'll probably make someone a good TE someday once he gets over the idea that he's a WR at this level - and it probably won't be with the team that drafts him."
As for your concept that Williams would have worked out differently if drafted by the Bears, I laugh. There is some validity to your concept, but NOT when taken to the extreme. Mike Williams has been a failure on 3 teams in 3 years. I just don't see how that can be spun positively.
