  1. Wow. I just commented on this in another post.

Does Biggs know this because of the brother factor? The NFL does a damn good job of making sure signings are not leaked. I agree Biggs thinks he knows what's going to happen. How can he report it?

That being said, I agree with exactly what you said. I hope it is correct and I hope it doesn't set us back too much financially.

Biggs also thinks we are cutting Peppers. I know it's inevitable and impractical, but wouldn't it be nice to have Peppers and Bennett???

If Peppers would take a big pay cut, it would be great to have these two but I think we are moving on.

I think this deal was done a while ago, we had Marty to thank for that. He's been pressing on this for a long time.

  2. 3rd rd pick????? c'mon guys lovie is in charge of a team again so count tampa in for a 1st rd pick for him....

LOL! I think Lovie should give us Tampa's entire draft, we can throw in Tillman, Hester, and Cutler too. All we need is McCown to win!

  3. In the Hester thread, I thought that the Bears wanted to maximize their roster spots and go with someone who is more than just a returner, and Dexter McCluster seems to fit that role. I still believe we have a good chance at landing Bennett. Emery wants to make this his team, so I have a feeling that Tillman is gone.

What about Darren Spoles? He can be a change of pace scat back/returner. He might be cheap and he might want to rejoin Kromer.

  4. Regardless, the first hurdle to overcome is him re-signing. And since he's already said he has no desire to play Safety (so we know it was a topic of discussion) that limits his options. Yes, he WAS playing at a pro-bowl level BEFORE his injury, but Hester WAS returning KOs and punts for TDs not all that long ago. Just sayin'

I think for him to sustain his career he'd be better served to contemplate a FS position....eventually. Seems a few other players (with the examples noted above) did so successfully.

I'd rather sign Delmas for FS, draft Ward/Bucannon at SS and sign Tillman to groom a 3rd or 4th RD prospect at CB.

  5. Not as silly as his response lol.

I wonder what a 33 year old Briggs fetches the bears. 3rd round pick? I wouldn't HATE the idea of trading him, esp. if they feel like they already have his predecessor on the team.

Adds 6.5M to the cap pot.

You guys take the bait so easily! Maybe watch/listen to the whole thing before reacting to the worm the writer hung out.

  6. There has been talk the past couple years of eliminating the kickoff, extra points, and so forth. Punts, would probably still be a part of the game, but they have ways to take out the returner on those too with directional, long distance, or slow high punts as we have seen. Hester eliminated his own job with being such a threat.

I've also heard crazy theories how teams should be and will be getting more aggressive on 4th down attempts.

  7. I dont know where to put this, but was reading where Peanut is not released by the doctors yet and for new teams will come into play with how much money he gets. That could keep the price down and put us back in play.

At the end of the year, he was put on IR and Trestsmans comment about that was strange. He mentioned how he will not disclose his condition for medical privacy rights. It was speculated that that was said to protect him for when he hits the open market. He must have a something serious that was big enough to possibly effect a contract. Hope he is healthy enough to play if he wishes with whatever team, but hope more that it is with the Bears.

  8. Hester is a fringe HOF player. Another 2 or 3 returns for touchdown and he should be in.

Great player that is past his prime. Time to move on and I'm glad the Bears did.

    Peace :dabears

Hard to say Hester is past his prime. Past his peek, I will agree, but the guy still led the NFL in punt average in yards. If he had competent blockers that didn't get called for penalties, he would have had one or two td's last year. If he had Dave Toubs best units, he'd shatter the record. If the roster was filled and we had room to cut Weems and sign Hester in his place I'd do it in a heart beat. Hester is owed nothing, but he is still one of the NFLs top returners still. His departure comes down to $, we need every dime to retool the D.

  9. I don't believe that's true. Your logic fails because in my scenario the LB and secondary are above average. The Bears last year were below average in all three levels of defense. You put last year's DL with Otis Wilson, Mike Singletary, and Wilbur Marshall and you'd have ENTIRELY different results.

It's just difference of opinions. I believe having more talent on the front 4 will make a bigger difference than the back 4.

But the main key is balance and scheme. You can have players that a great a pressuring the QB, but they won't amount to anything unless you can stop the run first.

  10. Had a good year in 2009 but has fell of since. Started 2 games 2 years ago for the Pats, recorded 3 sacks. No question a vet min deal which doesn't hurt.

    DRAFT PROFILE:

    TREVOR SCOTT BUFFALO

    6'5" 256 40 TIME: 4.52, 4.59, AND 4.67

    DE/Defensive Specialist? - seems like another 4-3 / 3-4 type player.

  11. Not sure where they got the numbers since none of our beat guys have said anything but per rotoworld Bears re-signed DT Jay Ratliff to a two-year, $4 million contract with $600,000 guaranteed. I was expecting no more than 2.5 so 2M is a great deal in my eyes.

That is a great deal, I was figuring closer to 3 since this will most likely be his last pay day.

  12. Everyone hear knows I'm a bit advocate of trench warfare considering my multi-year OL rant. On defense, however, I don't believe it's the same. On offense, if the QB loses efficacy, the entire offense dies. So there is a premium on protecting the QB with a good OL. On defense, there is no single player being defended behind the DL. It's entirely possible to have average players on the DL with a superior 2nd and 3rd level, and have great success. Upgrading the safeties allows the CBs to gamble more, which changes the timing on passing plays, which allows for the subpar DL to create more pressure/sacks. I believe a team with Ronnie Lott and Ed Reed in their prime would have so many crazy advantages in terms of play recognition and range that the defense could effectively send 6, if not 7, at the QB on just about every play, especially if you team them up with above average CBs like Peanut and Jennings.

The QB wouldn't have to do anything but hand off and watch the RB run 30-40 yards on every play. That's why our mediocre safety's and LB's looked terrible. Even Ronnie Lott or Ed Reed would look silly at times trying to stop a RB that is at full speed.

  13. Released from Denver. Since Tillman doesn't want to play S and apparently Emery doesn't have much in the way of loyalty, would the Bears have use of him as a potential Safety?

He was scheduled to make 10 million this year. How much of a pay cut would he take? It is rumored he may be heading to Atlanta.

I say sign him for the vet minimum

  14. If a player is not owed a roster bonus, there is no reason to cut him unless we have a replacement already on hand. If we cut Peppers now, the price on all DE's to the Bears would instantly rise because we would be in desperate need.

The Bears are doing this the right way, just give it time and moves will be made slowly but surely.

  15. I've got to disagree somewhat. It doesn't matter if we over-paid him in the past. We pay him what we think he can be this year. He's easily worth Eric Weems money in the range of 1.25+ a year. There's a familiarity and he still generates excitement within the stadium.

If we can keep Hester, which didn't sound promising as he was on NFL network with AJ, I would for Weems money. Hester basically said he was done in Chicago but would like to retire a Bear when his career is over. Tampa was mentioned as a suitor and Hester said he'd love to rejoin Lovie. He has a lot of respect for Lovie because of him putting faith into him.

    "Devin is a #1 WR"

  16. Thanks for the breaking news! I like the fact it's a two year deal. We must have seen enough from him at the end of the year to believe in he can still play.

Its great Patrick Mannely is on air. He said Ratliff is a team leader, worked his butt off to get back on the field, and is the worst guy he faced on PATs and FGs. He said having his all pro experience in the locker room, is much needed. When he speaks, playersand coaches listen. He also mentioned he will play 3T and NT, and will help bc he can play both 3-4 and 4-3.

  17. In reference to question number 3. Bears have tried out 2 late round QBs, Tajh Boyd and Jordan Lynch. Both guys are "scrambling" QBs, so perhaps we can rehash the read option comments Marc made before. Tajh is a real interesting prospect, was thought to be a first round talent coming into the senior season. Now, for whatever reason, is graded as a 7th round pick by CBS. All he did was improve his completion% from 67.2 to 68.5, his yards avg from 9.1 to 9.3, his passer rating from 165.6 to 168.7, and he threw 2 less ints. Yes there is "questions" about his height (he's 6'1") but it's not like he shrunk from when he was thought to be a first rounder till now. I'd love to draft him in the 5th or 6th, which I believe is more realistic than 7-UDFA.

I like Tajh Boyd also, he was one of the first players we worked out at the senior bowl.

Since you noted Tajh and Jordan Lynch as players we are known to have worked out, we have also worked out Aaron Donald and Walt Aikens. It's either we are very secretive on this process or we have not looked at very many prospects yet compared to some other teams.

  18. Weird that this popped up with a Walt Aikens search......While we're on Walt Aikens, I really like him as a 4-6 round pick. He's not gonna be a day 1 starter, but if the Bears don't bring back Bowman he'd be a nice replacement.

He could be a decent pick up, was kicked out of UofI for theft, but size and speed are up there with the best.

The Bears were at his pro day and worked him out. His 40 time on the fast track was 4.37 and 4.44, they say to add .05 to get a better idea of his speed. Not bad for a 6-1 205 frame.

  19. lol nice bump, I thought Brian was back. when I typed in nfldraftsite.com I guess it's actually draftsite.com. They have us taking the right guy....Aaron Donald. 14 Chicago logo Chicago Aaron Donald DT Pittsburgh 6' 1" 285 DraftSite's comments: Donald seems to have debunked many of the theories of being too small to play defensive tackle at the next level. Teams like Chicago and Dallas that need penetrating defensive tackles will be all over a player like Donald on draft day.

I did a search to see if anyone has posted on Walt Aikens DB Liberty and it pulled this post up. I thought it was interesting that they had us drafting Kyle Long, when everyone here never thought he'd be a RD1 prospect.

We need to visit nfldraftsite's mock draft to see who the Bears will select since they had that right last February.

  21. I agree, if Hester would want to come back for a little more than the minimum, I would want him back.

Our luck, we let him walk, he signs with Dallas and has a game winning record breaking return and it becomes the highlight reel of the century on espn, nflnetwork, and so on.
