  1. My takeaway from this article is I want the Bears to lock up McCown for the next 2 years as backup. I love his loyalty. I would give whatever is reasonable to keep him. He needs to stay. Peace :dabears

Agree, I think if we can lock him down for 2 years and Jay for 4, then we can concentrate on bringing the defense back to respectability.

  2. Shea will be a Bear next year. The team cannot afford to take a 4million cap hit in dead space, then they would also have to pay for his replacement. I see this with Peppers also, but hope they can re write his contract to be more cap friendly.

I love the Tuitt thought, he has size/speed. Can play DT in the 4-3 or DE in the 3-4. Also, comes from the University of Notre Dame!

2nd Round pick, I'd be happy with Verrit CB or if SS Dion Bailey from USC is available. Bailey played the WLB and SS for Monte Kiffen's Tampa2. He's known as a ball hawk and playing LB we know he can play the run as well.

3rd Round, I'd think Center also would be great with Swanson and Stork slotted around this round.

As for CB, Seattle has done great at finding 6th round prospects. They drafted the tall DB's like Sherman and have turned out great.

I hope whoever is DC next season, we run some 3-4. If you know a team is going to throw 70% or more, why not mix the defense up with different formations and blitzes.

  3. Definite Cut: S - Conte Wright DL - MCCLELLIN Peppers(unless he takes huge pay cut)

Shea McClellin will not be cut and doesn't have to take a pay cut. Being a higher draft pick, right now he has the bull by the horns. He will make his 2.2 million. If we cut/trade him, it will be a 4.1million cap hit up front. Not going to happen.

I doubt we cut Conte either, his cap hit won't be nearly as high but he is depth (warm body) at depleted position.

  4. This team can't afford to cut players signed, even if they've stunk. Each player cut under contract will have a cap hit, plus you need to sign a replacement and we will be strapped to field a 53 man team. Right now, we need a lot of fingers to plug the dike. SMC, Conte and Paea will all be back next year and they can be serviceable if they can be put in position to succeed.

Look at how Kromer/Trestman has brought along the offense. They may not play like all pros every game, but we see growth and glimpses of potential. Defense has been at a mighty mite level and to me, that reflects the coaching.

  5. Very interesting, I had not heard that. Hasn't Briggs said he doesn't wanna play MLB? I'd kinda hate to see Bostic at the SLB just because they come off in nickel situations and I'd like my 2R pick to play every down.

Briggs had said that earlier. He'd be on his last year, so maybe they can sway his opinion for the better of the team. If not, the I see DJ Williams back if healthy. I can't figure out were Greene will fit yet, that's why I think they need to find a new scheme to fit some of the players we have. This offseason will be a wild one. Id like to see a hybrid D, that's out of the norm. If Trestman can envision an offensive philosophy that works, lets hope he has an idea for a defense.

  6. I personally don't think it will take long to rebuild our defense at all. The reason our defense was so god awful this year was because of injuries, if they just bring back the injured guys, who should all come on discounts, then the defense will be at the very least, good enough.

DT was the biggest problem this season. If they can put a healthy rotation of Melton, Ratliff, Paea, and Collins they should be really stout in the middle. Maybe throw in a 3-4 round pick to protect ourselves against injury.

DE gets better because of the improvement at DT. Not only do they get to move Wootton back outside, but because of the attention paid to the guys on the inside, it makes the guys on the outside job a little easier. I also really think we'll see Peppers get the boot and add MartyBs bro Michael to take his place. Wootton and Bennett on the corners should be a big improvement over Pepper and SMC.

CB will be fine whatever way they wanna go with it. If they let one of Tillman or Jennings walk I'm fine with that because Bowman has played really well in the absence of Tillman. Frey hasn't been noticeably bad either so I can see him sticking around in the nickel.

LB isn't in bad shape. Briggs will be back, and despite somewhat bad play out of Bostic I think you gotta give your 2nd round pick a chance to start next year. The Sam LB should be easy to fill. Whether they wanna bring Anderson back, play Greene there, or find another cheap option there they should be fine.

Safety should be priority numero uno. I would LOVE to see Ha-Ha fall to us, or see Tillman accept a move to safety and have Denard fall to us....Those are ideal situations to me. Like another poster suggested, I wouldn't mind Joyner in the first round either, he reminds me a lot of Bob Sanders looking at his tape from when he was a Safety.

Assuming they have the money to bring back Melton, Collins, Ratliff, Wootton, Tillman, Jennings, and bring in Bennett, then hit on a Safety in the first round then I think they could, at the very least be a top 15 defense. If they're a top 15 defense, and the offense remains a top 5 offense i think that team could make a deep playoff run.

Speaking of LB, did you hear Emery on Bostic? He recently said he sees him as an OLB with his speed and would like to see him play there next year. Maybe he sees Briggs as an asset to trade for a pick or thinks them two swap positions. I think Briggs can play MLB and we would be more disciplined.

  7. He listed the redskins by rank, but Cutler sucked against that same Redskin defense. He list the Lions, whom Cutler sucked against twice, and McCown lead one drive. I've heard every excuse for why McCown did better than Cutler. The first week, it was teams hadn't seen tape on him to gameplan, even tho McCown hadn't practiced with the team all year. The excuses changed every week, and this week it is defensive rankings.

It's as simple as this. Cutler can't run this system effectively and makes costly mistakes. McCown . ays better in the system as it takes advantage of what he does well. Cutler doesn't work through progressions, stares down wr's, and panics in the pocket due to years of sacks. McCown, the old less talented QB can do all of these things and the offense works more efficiently. Cutlers arm isn't needed for an offense like this.

If arm strength and athletic ability was all that mattered, Vick would be starting over Foles right now and be considered the best QB in the league. A Super Bowl will never be won by the Bears with Cutler at starting QB, especially when the Bears defense isn't good enough to make up for his mistakes.

I guess we will see after this season is over which way the Bears think is best to go forward. I never said McCown can't run this offense and win. We've seen it, but we've seen Jay win too. If the Bears thought less of Jay, he would not be starting. Having two capable QB's should be a good thing. Every topic on every Bears board is numerous comparisons of the two. Nothing has changed my view, we have an offense that can score and the core is signed until 2015, except for QB. Starting over with McCown and a rookie with a core of Marshall, Forte, Jeffrey, and Bennett would be awful if McCown slips or gets injured. Continuing on with Cutler and McCown will assure we are capable under center and allow the team to focus on improving one of the worst defenses in the nfl.

  8. I am home for the night so pass the kool aid or hell I got a fridge dedicated to that kool aid lol

I am on the Orange Koolade now. With Cutler under center we are a top 5 offense, maybe 3. Why waste a number 1 or 2 pick on a project QB that pick takes away a young solid defensive player. The best path is to keep the hated villian.

  9. Cutler is not going anywhere. It can be debated, but he will get his contract. We know what he is, yes good and bad Jay. If this team is going to take advantage of what we have on offense to have a SB shot, it starts with keeping Cutler. The draft and FA will be used to solidify the defense. Draft a C/G and then draft heavy CB, DT, and S. The Bears are not far off and regardless of what happens the rest of this season, Bear nation will have high hopes going into 2014. Let Cutler go, and the Trestman era is over. We have a 2 year window left with the offensive core and counting on McCown to stay healthy and rookie to groom is doom. Emery knows it and will sign both Cutler and McCown, so take your money to Vegas and bet Da Bears 2014!!!

  10. I think saftey and DT are our most profound needs.

Safety is a need, but not as big of one as the D-Line and MLB. A safety does no good if you can't stop a RB at the LOS.

  11. Too bad our defense absolutely sucks now. Peace :dabears

I think if our defense stayed relatively healthy, it would've been in the upper half. Not having a solid MLB does hurt, Bostic just isn't ready. Plus all the other losses, just hasn't been our year on that side of the ball.

  12. So anything metal, i.e., batteries, memory cards, keys, change, etc. should be in the clear bag?

Anything that will set off the metal detector you will want out, otherwise they will ask you to remove it until the detector shows you're clean.

I went to the first game of the season, the Soldier Field wifi wasn't running yet.

  13. Ok for those of you who have been to games at Soldier Field recently I have some questions. Dad and I are still planning on going, and I picked up a regulation clear plastic bag that meets the 12x6x12 size limit. The items I'm considering bringing: 1 small Sony camera with extra batteries and memory cards 1 larger Sony camera with a telephoto lens that is under 6" so it meets the guidelines. Several AA batteries and memory cards 1 backup battery for my cell phone. 2 ponchos (if it looks like rain in the forecast) 1 small blanket (possibly)
    • Since your not allowed to bring a camera case, can the cameras, batteries, and cards be stored in the clear bag?
    • Do they make you empty your pockets and wand you? or can I just keep the batteries/cards on my person either in an inside coat pocket or pants pockets?
    • What are some things I should know ahead of time, any tips?
    • Do they search your plastic bag?
    • Other than obvious things what should I avoid taking with us to the game?

Anything with metal will need to be out of the pockets. I would either turn the data off of the phone or try to find a wifi connection (I used a Verizon setup there). That will drain the battery in a quarter searching for signal.

If possible, experience the tailgating. Chicago fans know how to get that done the right way!

  14. I like those picks, all in the same line that I'm thinking.

Nix/Hagelman would be a great addition. I'd like to see size up front to plug those running lanes which has destroyed us.

Maybe we can trade Peppers to Stl for Chris Long. Stl can have the NC connection and we can have the Longs.

  15. I don't think there will be any trades unless we can trade down and I don't think we will cut as many players either because our team is depleted with UFA's. The defense is struggling at the front 7 first, they over pursue and get swallowed. For this team to improve, we need 2 DTs and I wouldn't rule out another MLB because the 3 playing now have been horrible. I think Bostic will make a fine WLB, but not so sure about the MLB. I don't expect Melton back and would prefer we get bigger up front. I would love to see Nix or Hageman in rd1.

  16. I'm still not happy with the performance, but it has to be taken with a grain of salt considering the injuries.

Looking forward to next year, there are a lot of decisions to be made, but I think it's realistic that the starters on the DL could be SMC, Melton, Paea, Wooten. Maybe a really good pass rushing DE since SMC is mediocre. Maybe Anthony Barr, OLB/DE, UCLA slips?

If that's the case, I don't really think DL is the first concern. Nor is the LB corp considering the starters will most likely be Briggs, Bostic, Greene.

With Tillman and Jennings aging, and the safety play concerning, the focus for the Bears should be in the secondary. Let's be honest, Conte is bad and needs to be replaced. Ha Ha Clinton-Dix, S, Alabama would be great in Chicago. Or, even though he said he's against the move, putting Tillman at safety would allow the Bears to draft a guy like Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, CB, Oregon, who has experience at DB or S.

The good thing is Bostic and Greene are getting valuable experience, they should only improve. Tillman just mentioned that he'd be open to playing S, and I think with his experience he can help guide Conte to improve. If we can resign Jennings, then we are looking at finding one starter in the backfield. I think when our pick comes up, we will have a handful of talent at CB were we can find that starter.

  17. If the Bears keep Melton and Paea, I don't like any draft that starts off with a DT. I'd rather see CB/S in the first.

I don't know if they will Melton back. His asset was being able to pentrate using speed and he may have lost some of that. I think they take a page out of our blocking philosphy and realize you need to wreck havoc up front in the middle (Fairly, Suh, and Raghi). Thats why they wanted Long inside. This draft has a lot of CB talent, maybe we go that route or take a flyer on a guy that made it to the 2nd?

  18. Not much has changed in my draft thoughts. I'd be looking at going the same route.

1 DT Ra'Shede Hageman Minnesota - love if he's availabe (Timmy Jernigan DT FSU #2)

2 CB Justin Gilbert OK St- size/speed combo and can play man

    3 SS Ed Reynolds Stanford

    4 C Hroniss Grasu Oregon-Need youth/strength added inside

5 WR Brandin Cooks Oregon St-slot rec

    6 CB Wayne Lyons Stanford-more size/speed.

6 QB Bryn Renner NC- accuarate pocket QB development prospect

  19. I totally agree with you, as in most cases , not. With the first round pick, I think if a stud safety is there, I would do that, otherwise DT.

Thing about a stud safety, with out pressure up front he's less effective. It all depends on whose available when we select. I'm on board for a DT, Melton will get to test the waters and will probably sign elsewhere.

  20. Go back to the 2nd post I posted in this thread, I know the words aren't mine but I agree with what the guy said. I'm not saying the line hasn't improved, it certainly has, even through PFF ratings. Using the PFF ratings Webb was our best lineman last year, but the rating he put up last year would have been 5th on our team this year so it's clear the line is better this year.

Resigning Slausson is a "must" imo, and I like the idea of moving him to center, even though Garza hasn't been bad.

I'm all for resigning Slausson, but I don't think we stop drafting olinemen. Thats where we got in trouble to begin with. I see a center or guard selection in the top 4 rounds. This team has a lot of needs, but what team doesn't. I think you draft up front on both lines. Thats where every play starts. Those players up front will help make the guys behind look better.
