At least he admits his mistake, both Jones and Mercilus would've been better picks.
I think this could eliminate a undersized DT also, Donald. My guess is we are going, Ealy, Nix, or possibly Tuitt. Tuitt/Nix if we move down a little.
-
Why be completely silent and now release what you are thinking??? Wouldn't it be better to keep the idea of going 3-4 and what the side of the ball the draft will be most important?? Not that everyone doesn't know we need help on D!! Who knows the game, maybe they go heavy O and switch to the 3-4!!! lol
Emery is also is "selling" that this draft has talent on offense early, which might mean he is hoping to find a suitor to trade down with.

You're right, but in my world, SMC never puts his hand in the dirt. He's the strong side LB in 4-3 formations and OLB in 3-4 formations. I never wanna have to see him with his hand in the dirt again. So again, in my ideal world, even if they bring back Wootton they still need a DE to play opposite of him and stand up in 3-4 formations. I would love for that to be Kony Ealy in the first round.
SCS is right, Shea would stay at LB in a 4-3 also. Hopefully his days with his hand in the dirt are over.

Jeffery broke out in his second year, so who's turn is it this year?
I think Bostic gets much better in his second year.
Your turn
I will say RT Jordan Mills steps up and improves his PFT rankings.

I have to disagree, and it comes down to the same reasoning/thinking along a good oline.
What the line can do is effect time, a good offensive line buys time, a good defensive line steals a QB's time. A good offensive line opens holes for a RB, a good defensive line can collapse a pocket.
Note:I want to read this , not sure what it will say but ran out of time, posted here to find later

For Jason, the link above is a study about success of drafted players. Low and behold, safety has the highest success rate, followed by guards, then centers. GB is the most successful team draft wise since 2000. Rds 2 and 3 produce better than rd1. Kind of an interesting article that I skimmed through.

Fundamentally I disagree with the bolded part. I believe it to be a two-way street. If you have a complete lockdown CB or an incredible FS, then it allows the LBs to cheat up and help lesser defenders. You can hide a mediocre DT if there is always a LB filling the hole behind/beside him.

Kiper is wrong more than he is right. Much more. It's just that he throws so much shit against the wall that some of it has to stick. This is a fair list of players at each position who could go in the first two rounds. DEs: Clowney, Ealy, Ford, Crichton, Murphy, Jeffcoat, Marcus Smith, Chris Smith DTs: Nix, Donald, Jernigan, Hageman, Tuitt, Easley, Sutton, Quarles FSs: Clinton-Dix, Pryor, Reynolds Seems pretty obvious to me.
Only ones I would touch:
DE: Clowney(not a chance in hell), Ealy, Ford (not sure he can play DE 4-3)
DT: Donald, Jernigan, Tuitt, maybe Hageman but I have flags on him too
Nix has knee issues, same as Easley.
The Dline is not a deep as you think either.

I think we need to take a step back and think about one thing, and that's be grateful we are in this moment, able to hug loved ones, breathe, and feel. Tomorrow may not come, yesterday will never be back, and today is what we make of it.
My post's are in black and white, like everyone else's. We all have one big thing in common in sharing a passion for the beloved Bears. If topics get off base on touchy topics, just keep in mind that your views, no matter how they are worded can affect the next guy. That's why dad said do not talk religion and politics in the bar.
I know it's a slow time, but lets get back to discussing Bear football. Plenty of draft talk left with the combine coming up. Plenty of FA prospects to look at.

Are there multiple guys that do big boards for NFL Draft Scout??? Or are using an older version?
The one on CBS, which is run by NFL Draft Scout, has different rankings.
2. Clowney
8. Mack
9. Denard
11.Barr
16.Mosely
17.Ealy
18.Ford
19.Nix
20.Dix
21.Gilbert
22.Donald
23.Jernigan
26.Hageman
28.Pryor
33.Shazier
34.Verrett
39.Van Noy
40.Roberson
42.Tuitt
Tuitt is a 2nd round draft pick on this big board and Hageman is behind Donald.
The thing with Tuitt, his stocked started dropping after Nix went down. Did that have to do with teams focusing on him and putting extra guys on him? I am always leary of late risers. If Donald is the guy, I will support it. I prefer taller guys on the edge, long arms have more range to bat down balls and reach ball carriers. But it takes a player with heart to go all out and Donald does that. He reminds me of myself!
When we talk about hybrid Ds I like Donald (3T in 4-3 and 5T in 3-4) and Ealy (DE in 4-3 and OLB in 3-4) more than I do Hageman and Tuitt.

We only have two drafts to judge by but what we do know.
He sees the same team we do and has addressed weaknesses. Grant you, bad miss on the first year , kudos to last year's first round draft.
He like athletes. So the next guy will be all of that.
He addressed WR and TE bringing us Marshall and Bennett, and drafting Jeffery, so I think he attacks the fixing of the defense the same way.
First round grades on defensive players. I used Rob Rangs big board from NFL Draft Scout for this scenario.
1-Clowney/DE
4-Mack/OLB
7-Barr/OLB
9-Mosley/ILB
11-Denard/CB
14-Tuitt/DE
19-Ford/DE-OLB
21-Gilbert/CB
22-Hageman/DE
23-Jernigan/DT
24-Shazier/OLB
25-Ealy/DE
26-Pryor/S
27-Verrett
28-Ha Ha/S
30-Donald
31-Roberson/CB
32-Van Noy/OLB
So I think our choice will be one of the above.
I think 1-4-7 will be gone so our choice will be addressed out the most athletic of the rest of the first round.
If we go by highest rated and athletic that would be Mosley-Denard-Tuitt-Gilbert-Hageman
I think in FAgency he will bring back Melton,Wooten,Ratcliff, Bowman,DJ Williams and will cut Peppers
I also think that he could address DE in FAgency so that would change all assumptions and may just go with highest rated defensive player which would be Mosley.
So for our most glaring needs will probably be Truitt or Hageman. I think he will address pass rush that would have the most impact so:
Truitt/Hageman/ and throw in Ealy, these will be one of our first picks. All are physical specimens, and address our pass rush, which will be a priority to Phil.
If he surprises us and he capable of that, possibly Donald or Pryor would fill that bill.
I came to the conclusion thay the most like position we'd take would be Tuitt/Hageman also. If the plan is to use the hybrid d, then I think we need a DT/DE the most. There is other prospects that I like better, but landing the dlineman is worth the most.
-
any reaon why you like him over Donald???
I see CBS now has Donald ranked right above Timmy, which I believe is right. (Kony Ealy is 5 spots ahead of them, I slowly slipping into wanting him RD1).
Both played in the ACC, Jernigan had MUCH better talent around him, and yet Donalds "disruptive numbers" (sacks and TFLs) blew Jernigan out of the water.
Either of them would be a wise choice, but if both are there I, personally, would take Donald.
Emery last two RD1 picks were Senior Bowl standouts, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Donald was taken.
Jernigan is better know as a run stuffer, only this year he showed some flashes of pressuring the QB. Not sure if that was his role or what.
Ealy would be great too, DE is one of the toughest positions to hit on in the draft.

I agree that half those guys won't be there but I used the fanspeak simulator just like you, so I just went with what they gave me....Who are these former scouts you give kudos to?? I think Whitner gets about 8M and Melton gets around 6M, so the difference in what we spent isn't too far away. Remember, to go along with that 16M number you came up with there could be a lot more where that came from. The way Cutler/Jennings/Slaus contracts were signed allow them to free up money as they need it, and I still expect to see Marshall to get an extension as well. As for starting a 4th round player...To me there's a bit of difference between a 4th round starter at DE and a 4th round starting safety. I think you can "hide" a "bad" safety more than you can "hide" a "bad" DE.
If you can hide a bad safety, we did a horrible job hiding Conte.....just sayn!
-
That is a near perfect start in my opinion. A dominant FS, a dominant CB, a dominant DT. I don't like the RB pick at all, and would rather see Stork in the fourth. I'd be ecstatic if that's what happened in the draft.
I'm leary of Stork, lot's of concern over concussions with him. Purifoy is raw, but has a tremendous skill set with size....maybe a Daniel Manning type?
I think Safety has some talent this year and we should be able to get a decent prospect in RD's 1-3.

Trestman's team scored 27.8 points per game and gave up 29.9 per game. Lovie Smith's teams averaged 20.93 points per game and gave up 19.2 points per game. I'll only highlight the games that I believe would change. WK 2 - 31-30 win over the Vikings. That's likely a loss. Lovie's teams rarely scored 31 points. 24-27 is likely, which gets the L. WK 3 - 40-23 win over the Steelers. This is potentially a loss. 31 would be a great game. 40 was outrageous under Lovie. Maybe the Bears get 30 in this one and squeak out a win. WK 6 - 27-21 win over the Giants. If Trestman's offense could only get 27, it's likely Lovie's would have been closer to the Giants score. WK 9 - 27-20 win over the Packers. Same as above. Also, this is almost certainly a loss. The Packers owned Lovie over the last few years. WK 14 - 45-28 win over the Vikings. Sorry, but 45 points is just not going to happen. It's probable still a win, but it would have been closer. Possible. WK 15 - 38-31 win over the Browns. This would have been a loss. The Bears scored 21 in the 4th quarter. Not gonna happen under Lovie. So that's 6 games. Even if you're fair about things, that's at best a 50/50 split. The Bears are likely 5-11. Maybe Lovie squeaks out one of the games I didn't mention. 6-10. At best.
So you're saying that if we had the great defensive mind of Lovie Smith, we would have been worse? This is why I am willing to give a little slack to Trestman on his decision to keep Tucker. Because anyone can see, this defense was a train wreck before the hire was made with age/expiring contracts, then it got worse with injuries. This is the year the Bears planned on investing in the D, so lets hold tight and see which way they go.

Fanspeak.com has a ongoing do your own draft setup. Tues at noon they update there database. here is the latest draft I did, and I like it. 14 ILB C.J. MOSLEY ALABAMA 51 S DEONE BUCANNON WASHINGTON STATE 82 DT DAQUAN JONES PENN STATE 113 DE KAREEM MARTIN NORTH CAROLINA 144 CB VICTOR HAMPTON SOUTH CAROLINA 167 S KENNY LADLER VANDERBILT 175 TE COLT LYERLA OREGON
Interesting picks, I'd be extremely happy if we came away with this draft.
We fill ILB -Briggs will be gone next year. Mosely is known as a great leader also
We find a stud safety, which I almost prefer over Dix.
We find a big run stuffing DT. Jones can play NT in 3-4, led big 10 in TFL.
Kareem Martin in an interesting prospect at DE. He came on late and has great size/speed.
Kenny Ladler Vandy, seems like a solid pick up, we had decent luck with Vandy guys.

Who else is with me tonight....Greatest high as a Bears fan had to be opening kickoff and Devin Hester returns it for a touchdown!

You, as well, are assuming we move to a 2 gap 3-4. It's the offseason, if we didn't talk about what ifs and assumptions then there would be nothing to talk about.
I just look at our new coaches, look at who they worked under, and what they looked like in the past and believe they run more of an attacking 1 gap 3-4 which doesn't require the big boys up front.
With the hiring of Pasq and Herring, 2 Phillips guys, I'd be a little surprised if the Bears moved away from what they're used to.
As for the cap issues, that'll be another interesting part of the offseason.....How much of the 22M Jay got, the 7M Jennings got, and the 4M Slauson got are the willing to dip into? Will BMarsh get an extension? Will the Bears cut Peppers, Bush, Bennett, Podlesh, and/or Weems?? There is work that could be done, will it happen? Well were talkin ifs and buts again arent we.
Looking at the hybrid thought and personal, I'd sign:
James Anderson OLB, Jay Ratliff DT, Corey Wootten DE
Rework: Julius Peppers DE
TJ Ward S, Malcolm Jenkins S
Draft: Try move down in some rds, up in others.
1-Ra'Where Hageman/Stephen Truitt DE/DT
2-Stanley Jean-Baptiste CB
3- Daniel McCullers/DaQuan Jones DT
4-Ed Reynolds S
5-James Gayle OLB
6-Max Bullough LIB
6-Gabe Ikard C
Defense would be:
CB: Jennings/Jean-Baptist
S-Ward/Jenkins
OLB-McClellan/Anderson
ILB-Boston/Briggs
DE-Hageman/Tuitt-Wootten/Peppers
DT-Ratliff/Paea /McCullers

As pressing as our D line needs are, I think we need a play maker on defense. Between FAgency and the rest of the draft, I think we can do that even if we draft him with our first round. Nix? he has some injury issues and I think that makes that a risky pick. Hageman is a brute, but is he a 8 to 10 sack player in the middle? His numbers werent special at Minn. Truit is big and versatile but is he a difference maker? Donald, he looks like he can be special, but at 6.07' 285 lbs, kinda smallish for a DT. Is he a differentence maker. My main reason for getting on C.J.s bandwagon is he is a true leader, and we desperately need that besides his football traits.
It wouldn't be a bad pick. Most of the d-linemen have some kind of deficiency that questions me. Nix "knees", Hageman "too tall" and "not a 100% all the time guy", Donald "too short". Jernigan is the only DL I don't question. On the DE, is there talent worthy of #14? Safety, we have Dix if he's available. So I would have Mosely on the big board, after Briggs departs, can we trust both Bostic/Greene?
-
He doesnt have a contract, so it cant be an extension. That would be under a new contract. He wasnt definite, but prospects sound good that they are discussing a new contract. I would say a 2 year 13 deal might get it done. We have the TB lovie thing to interfere now to drive up the price. He wont work for less than Jennings signed for. His skills have diminished but still a TO machine we need to have in the backfield. IF we resign him, I would say CB wont be addressed until middle rounds. 4 or 5. that gives us 1 and 2 for DT and DE, FS or SS . I would say these would be our 1st 4 picks.
Technically he is under contract until March 11, 4 pm....so not sure how you word that.
-
Peanut was on the Score last night with Holmes and when asked about his future with the Bears, he said he guarantees he will retire as a Bear. He said he talks to the front office everyday and is very close to them.
This says two things....he is close to a contract extension or he plans on retiring.
-
Maybe, but I dont wish him well, he is not in blue and orange.
No biggie, we signed a kid that ran a 4.28 at the combine and he's a football player....Chris Williams!

here is a 3 round draft from The Football Spot 1/16/14
1-Hageman/DT/Minn
2-Colvin/CB/Okla
3-Bullough/MLB/MSU
not familiar with the last two names
using there draft here is who I would take:
1-Hageman/DT/Minn---------------We need a large man to add to our line and he is 6-6 318, athletic, can play several positions along the line
2-Bucannon/SS/WashSt------------He has size and 109 tackles with 5 interceptions his senior year. A playmaker type we desperately need.
3-Jones/DT/PennSta----------------He was still available in this round so I thought I had to take him. A productive 6-3 318lb that could also fit in a DE spot in the 3-4.
I feel our biggest need is to be strong up the middle and these 3 would go along way at making that happen. I also thought about Smallwood/MLB that was still available in the third, another need spot for us.
I like the idea of SS in the draft and hope we sign a FS in FA. Bucannon is a player I like, brings some thump. I'd be happy with your first 3.
-
Even better then, didn't bust the trade value chart out, a 3rd just sounded more reasonable.
I've read some SF forums, and many fans there are also mentioning trading some picks to move up. They know they dont have room for 13 draft picks. They also are coveting two stud WRs to add into the mix. Might be something we can work out. But if the want Watkins, they will need to get into the top 10.
-
Don't have the numbers to average them out but just saying it all for what its worth. I think it's more about power and skill moreso than size. Pretty much you have to be a guy who commands a double team. Guys like Dorsey, while small, are just too much of a handful to play one on one.
I think if we miss on Nix, guys like Hageman and Truitt can fit. Hageman either spot NT/DE or Truitt DE. Obviously we'd want to move down with Truitt. Whichever way we go, the guy that can handle playing 3-4 and 4-3 the better bc i think we will run both.

Pre Combine Mock
in Bearstalk
Posted
Phil Emery's pre combine speech gave a little insight on this draft. He is looking to trade down, he is looking for a young defense, he wants to stop the run, and he wants a defense that can score. He learned his lesson on undersized D-Lineman, he is giving Conte another shot, he wants to resign Garza, Tillman, DJ Williams, and Wootton.
Since Phil is looking to trade down, I found a trade partner with Miami at 19. We acquire 1-19, 3-81, and 5-143, which equals out in the trade value chart.
1-19 Kony Ealy DE Missouri 6'-5" 275
A lot of updside, has all the tools to develop into a premier DE in the NFL.
2-51 Jimmy Ward SS Northern IL 5'-11" 193
Ward is smart, feisty, and athletic play making safety that shined in senior bowl.
3-81 Travis Swanson C Arkansas 6'-5" 310
The top available center in the draft should be taken here, Richburg/Swanson
3-82 DaQuan Jones DT Penn St 6'-4" 323
Jones has been one of the top D-linemen in the big10. Great against the run and can pressure the QB.
4-113 Pierre Desir CB Lindenwood 6'-2" 206 4.56
Little raw at CB yet, but has the size and speed to match big WR's
5-143 Marqueston Huff FS Wyoming 5'-11" 198
Small program athlete with NFL upside. Fast, tough, could play CB also
5-144 Keith McGill CB Utah 6'-3" 214
FS that played CB his senior year, struggled to adjust. Size makes him attractive
6-167 Robert Herron WR Wyoming 5'-9" 193 4.4
Herron performed well in the senior bowl, could be on of the fastest WR's in the draft. Comes in to compete in the slot.
6-175 George Atkinson III RB Notre Dame 6'-1" 220 4.48
Atkinson has nice size and speed to can complement Forte, he can also return. He has break away speed and can take it to the house.
