Briggs made a comment in preseason that not everyone had bought in yet. After the season it was speculated that he was referring to Peppers.
I've seen many times in the corporate world where a new management team comes in and some of the existing employees (particularly really talented people) tend to groan and whine about all the changes. Their points usually tend to fall along the lines of "We've done this such and such a way for years and we've always performed at a high level." I've seen those types stay, I've seen them leave voluntarily, and I've seen them fired. The ones that stay tend to be miserable. The ones that leave end up better off because they find a new situation that they accept at face value because it's new.
Now in this instance, I have to imagine that Urlacher (who was very close to Lovie) might not be thrilled with ANYTHING that changed. And, being a leader, he could have had a negative influence on the younger guys simply by example. Now I for one would like to think that when games that count started, Urlacher's competitive spirit would take over and he would play at a high level. I'm just not sure that that fact alone could overcome the negatives that he might have displayed during TC that might have delayed the younger guys buying in and become a general distraction.
Personally, I was relieved when Urlacher wasn't re-signed - and in particular retired. I potentially saw a power struggle just because - well - Urlacher is kind of a vengeful dick.
As for why no other teams signed him, I think he still had enough in the tank to help some other team - and certainly the Bears if Lovie was still around. The problem may have come in where his accustomed position of leadership couldn't be given to a guy that might not even start, or would be a one year mercenary. And another concern would also have to be how much effort he would put into learning a new scheme if he was on a one year deal.
An example that comes to mind is Kreutz. He was THE leader on the offensive line for years. The Bears offered him less than he thought he was worth so he took a one year deal with the Saints for less than the Bears were offering. In October of that year, he quit the team. He just left the team because he wasn't feeling a love for the game any longer. Can anyone say bad signing by the Saints?
I'm not saying that would have happened with Urlacher either with the Bears under a new regime or with a new team, but there does seem to be the possibility that his pride may have gotten in the way and prevented him from being what he used to be on the field no matter who he may have played for.
I agree with that assessment and I believe that since they didn't have a head coach in line, their communication process with Brian wasn't clear because they didn't know exactly which way they would go with him. If Marenelli stayed I think Brian would have had his fairwell year. I believe he would've held the D together better with Marenelli as DC, but not with Tucker. Moving on was for the best

Urlacher sucked, was overrated and a locker room cancer. Just like all the washed up Bears and the soon to be like Cutler and Briggs. As you can see, I am being sarcastic and don't understand the lack of appreciation it seems a lot of Bears receive. I understand the Bears trying to move on like a Pittsburgh would do. I think they went about it in the wrong way. They shoulda being more clear before negotiations about there intent to move on and tried to force him into retirement. From my understanding, Brian wasn't going to put his body through another year of NFL without great compensation. In his eyes, he felt his body would play for 5 million, the Bears wouldn't budge off two. He was upset there was no counter offers. So be it... he is retired

…add in that Christian Jones' coaches put him at DE where he sucked too.
The knock on Jones is football IQ. I guess he had trouble on the chalk board identifying responsibilities. Athletically he is gifted, but he may struggle learning.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this deal was done a long time ago and Marshall wanted to bring Mental Health Awareness month in big and held off the signing until today. He has been nothing but first class since becoming a Bear and he has been a big inspiration/leader for the young Bears. What will top it off is a Championship. Congrats Brandon!

Alright so I'm kinda getting ahead of myself here, but I find looking at the 2015 season very intriguing.....Look at who we already have locked up...
QB-Cutler/Fales
RB-Forte/Carey
WR-Marshall/Jeffery/Wilson
TE-Bennett/(Onubun)
LT-Bushrod
LG-Slauson
C- ?
RG-Long
RT-Mills
DE-Allen/Houston/Young
DT-Ratliff/Ego/Sutton
LB-Bostic/SMC/Greene/(Jones)
CB-Jennings/Fuller/Frey
SS- Mundy
FS- Vereen
They have all of that AND about 30M in cap space.
Hypothetically speaking if Bostic takes a step forward, SMC proves to be a solid LB, Greene shows the talent I saw in him in college, Vereen takes the starting FS job and runs with it, and the Bears resign DLP to play center, what the hell are they gonna spend that 30M in cap space on!
If all goes right we're gonna be set up for yet another interesting offseason next year.
Phil is doing great things here.
I've started looking at this last week too. I wanted to make a list of 2015 draft prospects. My list has S, CB, TE, DT, LB, OT, and WR. They were listed in my order of priority, which will change.

Shea McClellin. Nobody has worked harder to prepare for this season and I think it shows up on day one of training camp.
I am hoping you are right. I think they also scheme the defense to give him freedom to attack.
-
Not surprised Butler was cut. Draft pick is getting the job.
Peace

Signed a cb and rb that had productive college careers. They are both small, but might find a place.
-
First I heard this on a Brad Biggs tweet that last summer the Bears declined an offer to trade for Shea McClellin to the Texans.New Bears LB coach was with the Texans and is familiar with Shea.
Wonder what the offer was.

With all the new bodies on the club, I am curious who everybody thinks will have a breakout year that was already on the team.
My choice will be Cris Williams-We are in dire need of a new return man and I think he carries that torch.
He has speed to burn, he will also contribute at WR as our 5th wideout. With all the new players, he will find a place to succeed.
This is a good one. I could go Marquese Wilson who will have a bigger role, Chris Conte who could redeem himself, but I am choosing Shea McClellin. I think the Bears new scheme will be set up for him to be able to blitz often from different areas. His draft profile size and measurables were unbelievable, but he didnt work out being a smaller DE. Hoping those measurables make him excel as a LB.
-
If you watch the games you will see Forte look toward the sideline and raise his hand and go out of the game this has happened a lot and may contribute to him being slighted by his peers in the top 100 players in the league. I personally think heis top 25 even if he takes himself out of the games from time to time.
I've never noticed. Wonder why he wouldn't want to be in there? For a guy that wanted his pay day, he needs to step up and be a bigger/better player.

If only...I can barely get in a 30 minute run every other day. Wish I could devote the time..... Of course my body would probably reject anymore strain than what I barely ask it to do now.
Oh to be a professional athlete..
Wouldn't it be nice to be able to dedicate 10 weeks to transform your body. But trying to live the dream doesn't give us those opportunities.

Thats is spot on what scouts think of him, to play WLB or situational pass rusher.
I really would like to see the coaches identify and groom our young in the right posistions. Seems like all are LBs are meant to be WLB except for Shea. I think Bostic and Shea should get good looks at MLB, Greene and Jones at WLB, and SLB will fall in place. We still don't know how our D will look with a new scheme installed. Can't wait for TC to begin...
-
To waste a draft spot on him, he should be .
He is a craftsman, works hard to be the best. If he becomes one of the NFLs great punters, then it is worth the pick. Im sure every option was looked at in FAs and getting him was a priority after last seasons punter didn't help the team very often.

Mad L as you can see this has kind of bothered me for awhile because Forte has never been the same since his 316 attmp season as a rookie. Since then he hasn't come close to that production until we got Marshall and Jeffrey and had 289 attmp. which also was the second highest yrds per @ 4.6. I don't like the tap out thing he does because I would prefer for him to be told to come off the field.
Forte took himself out? Or was it the OC? For most of Forte's years, the line was awful. They would use a jumbo package at the goal line and could never punch it in with the other back either. With Trestman, I haven't seen them remove Forte in those situations. For the most part, he would even come back in for goal line carries if he came out for a few plays. Now that we have a oline and a good offensive minded coach, I don't think we will see that happening much anymore.
-
I think Cris Williams get his spot on the roster, the more I read about Jones the more I understand why he didnt get drafted. I think the possibility exists he doesnt make the squad.
I think Jones will make it, and challenge Shea for the SLB. Would they cut Shea? I doubt it, but Jones is a LB were Shea will be learning the positition. Going be a tough call when deciding on the 53.

21 was given to the Mundy the safety during FA
I thought Vereen was given #45....
-
Is there going to be a press conference introducing the rest of the draft? I know they had one for Fuller, but I thought they would have one for the others, but I haven't seen anything on it.
I like how Fuller will wear #23. That is my favorite number....wonder why....and when it was given to Hester, I bought his jersey before he ever returned a kick off or punt.
-
Even in the modern NFL, I still believe RB's can get into a rhythm as the game goes on and too much rest can be a bad thing for production. But I agree if he has talent he should get carries and that will lengthen Forte's career. It's important, in this offense, that Jay get confidence in him early, like pre-season. The way that happens is Carey does a good job blocking and/or getting out into his pass patterns, whichever the play dictates. If Cutler loses confidence in him he'll be on the bench a lot more than either of us want.
I think Ka'Deem will get every third series. As long as he can pass block and hold onto the ball, he will get some action.

nice!
Ego Ferguson also signed...only Fuller and Sutton left
-
The point was we knew the S prospects up close and personal and choose Fuller instead. If Emery thought he is a better player than the two Ss that is what he has to go with.
Fuller was rated a top 5 player and Emery wasn't trading down or reaching for anything else. We drafted a S that is ready to get to work and we spent a future 5th round pick to get him. Drafting is not about one season, but 4 or more. We may have 5 guys that contribute right away which is great.

How lucky can we be to have Cliff, he knows his shit. We never have holdouts.
I hope he has many years left before retirement. It seems he gets these done sooner every year, like its a competition.
-
Cliff Stein is at it again. Brock Vereen and David Fales both sign 4 year contracts. More to come soon!

I have my doubts about Clowney as well. Watching him in a couple games this season, even watching Quarles run past him on some highlight films, makes me wonder if he has the desire to really achieve what he's capable of doing. Being on such a good Dline will help him but he was drafted in a spot where he is supposed to be capable of carrying a Dline. I don't see that in him but I hope he gets there because he could be fun to watch (except when playing against the Bears of course). Savage we heard a lot about in the last few weeks leading up to the draft but I wonder about a guy who ran around looking for a place to play instead of competing and winning. How does that guy handle the pressure of being a starting QB in the NFL? To be fair I said the same about a guy named Flacco years ago.
I think Buffalo gave up too much to get Watkins. I love how Watkins plays the game but in a draft deep with WR talent and all their needs it didn't make sense to me. He will help sell tickets so that makes sense.
I don't know enough to give out grades but I do know that this will be one of the best drafts to evaluate in 3 years. Even looking at it next year will be interesting because there is so much talent, even into the 4th round, that is expected to contribute a lot on many rosters.
Such a deep draft, too bad they can't expand the rounds to match the talent, could've went 8 or 9 rounds. I wish the NFL can create a JV developmental league again. It would be nice to retain and develop some of this talent that might go wasted.

I already forsee next years draft/FA will be DB heavy. Only Safeties signed beyond 2015 are Mundy & Vereen. Only cornerbacks beyond Fuller/Jennings. Dline will need another DT, LB depth, and TE.

Marshall trying to emulate Rice...

Great guys to emulate. I also heard Marshall say he wants his career to match Chris Carters in terms of numbers. Having a steady offense the team can learn should only help all of the offensive players put up numbers. Great we are not juggling OCs anymore and hope Tucker can put together a solid unit to get respectability back for the D.
