Oops, I misread the word "for" for "or"....Ya I might consider that.
BTW I like Donald more than Clowney.
I also see Detroit is shopping Suh, they might be in the DT market.
-
I love Aaron Donald just as much as anyone and I don't think I'd do it. At least not in this draft that is stockpiled with talent.
If it was for Clowney I bet you would. The reason I'd consider this is Donald fills the one position we need the most. Some scouts have said he is a top 5 talent and if he had 2 more inches, he'd be considered the top pick. We still have the same amount of picks, just 100 slots down the chart.
-
Would you trade your 1st and 3rd for a 1st and 5th if it meant securing Aaron Donald? It is worth a consideration if Tennessee would and we thought NYG would take him at 12.

For what it's worth, here's Dan Pompei's explanation for Shea's spare tire via Twitter: "McClellin looked a little soft in a photo released by his trainer, but there were reasons why he looked that way. People familiar with the situation say McClellin had to eat a lot in order to keep his weight up so he could play the defensive end position. He needed some mass in order to be able to tangle with much larger offensive tackles, so he carried a bit of fat to stay at 263 pounds. After his position switch to linebacker, he is at 252, which is a better weight for him. The other issue is this: virtually every player in the NFL is in his worst shape of the year at the end of the season, when that picture was taken. Once training camp begins, players can't possibly work out the way they do in the offseason because their bodies usually are beat up, and they also have much less time and energy to devote to weight training and cardio. McClellin undoubtedly looked like a lot of other players who didn't have their photos all over Twitter."
Same thing I thought. It is the offseason and players usually do take a break before offseason training. It was said last year at TC that Shea came in a little lighter. At that point, he might have been told to beef back up which would come with adding whatever weight comes fastest.
I also believe the Lovie theory. Lovie had a big hand in player selection, which if he never took that power, he may still be here. Lets hope Trestman and Emery keep a good working relationship.

Since I'm the Bears GM in the community mock draft I can't reveal my picks

I'm not so sure I'm comfortable with Palmer as the backup so I'd probably replace Aikens with a QB.
Shayne Skov and his 4.95 40 does absolutely nothing for me. I think he's a 3-4 MLB and nothing more.
I wonder if DAT was just brought in to see if he can pass block...Otherwise that kinda goes away from the whole "We'd like our #2 RB to be able to pass protect" statement.
Well prepare, I asked to be bold. I dont want to see you on here the week after saying yourthey were all your guys. Skov was slow, but so was Vontaze Burfict. You can't teach the skills they have. You have 12 days.

nice work! I like TE Colt Lyeria and think he's worth a look. Long gets along with him. Maybe he can mentor him. What I would do:1) Aaron Donald, DT, Pitt - Love him and don't really like the other DTs
**Trade down in 2nd for extra 4th & 7th**
2) Terrence Brooks, S, Florida State - Like his tackling and coverage more than any non 1st round safety.
3) LaMarcus Joyner, CB, Florida State - His size might push him down, but he's tough and can learn a lot from Jennings.
4a) Zach Mettenberger, QB, LSU - Not comfortable with Jordan Palmer as a backup. QBs always go lower than they are expected and Mettenberger has the size and arm that Emery & Trestman like.
4b) Trevor Reilly, LB, Utah - Versatile LB to help after the iinevitable DJ Williams injury.
5) Storm Johnson, RB, Central Florida - Bruiser with some shiftyness to spell Forte
6a) Colt Lyerla, TE, Oregon - Tremendously gifted TE with excess baggage. Was at his best when being mentored at Oregon by - wait for it - Kyle Long. Worth a shot, I say.
6b) Cornelius Lucas, OT, Kansas State - Potential swing tackle to develop.
7) Jeremy Gallon, WR, Michigan - I just like him.
What I think the Bears will do (that I wouldn't hate):
1) Calvin Pryor, S, Louisville - Vision of Conte missed tackles convince them to take the hardest hitting and best tackling safety in the draft.
2) Will Sutton, DT, Arizona State - Bears have worked him out, and his junior numbers were almost identical to Donald's. Then he added weight and lost effectivness. Bears hope he can regain past explosion.
3) Shayne Skov, LB, Stanford - Looks like Bostic is going to be tried at OLB, so they take one of the more NFL-ready LBs to back-up the middle and take over after Williams. I'm not a big fan, but it makes sense.
4) Alfred Blue, RB, LSU - Bears get cute and take physically gifted but little tested Blue. Bears will tout his special teams experience immediately.
5) Walt Aiken, CB, Liberty - Prototypical size for CB position and former Illinois DB.
6a) Jeff Mathews, QB, Cornell - Mettenberger-lite - good size and big arm for Trestman to mold.
6b) Jon Dun Duncan, TE, Dixie State - Pass-catching TE who can make the squad as a long-snapper (since Mannelly may be done) while he develops.

We are under two weeks until the 2014 draft kicks off. The long wait will soon be over. Time to be bold and make some predictions. Who do you think the Bears will draft? You can predict one pick or all 7.
Here is my take:
Rd1. RaShede Hageman DT- I don't think Donald will get by 12. Hageman is still learning, athletically gifted, and has size.
Rd2. Deonne Buccanon S - size, speed, and a need
Rd3. Pierre Desir CB- lengthy small school talent with great understanding of work ethic
Rd4. Shayne Skov LB- hard nosed LB that makes plays. One yr removed from injury and getting legs back
Rd5. Walt Aikens CB- loading up on small school DBs, one will emerge
Rd6. DeAnthony Thomas RB- Bears have interest, can play multiple roles
Rd6. Marqueston Huff FS- another S to compete
Next..

I was one that thought it would be crazy for Shea to play LB, only bc he is a 3-4 OLB. I am now backing off that thought because he resembles a young Urlacher, with a smaller neck. If he and the coaches put in the work, he just might be something.
Also, for all the talk about drafting the LB Barr, that would be making the same mistake all over again. Unless we do become a 3-4 base, it makes no sense.

I really like Gilbert and Denard, but at the same time I really like the depth at CB of this draft class. I'd really like to see one drafted in the 3rd, where there will still be a lot of quality players available. Really liked what I saw out of Pierre Desir at the Senior Bowl, he's who I have my eye on in the 3rd. If he's gone then you should still have a guy like Breeland, Watkins, Purifoy, McGill, Baptiste, or Reynolds there for the pickins, all of which would be good picks. I only go with Gilbert/Denard if somehow Donald/HHCD/Pryor are all gone....Even then I might consider Hageman or (If they wanna go the route of a huge body) Nix.....Maybe, just maybe, I even consider Mosely, yes that's right Stinger, I said it.
Cross Purifoy off the list, he is in trouble with the Po-Po.

first, i want to qualify that i do not watch much college ball anymore and i am not basing any decision on how the players actually performed, just on what is written in this article. that said... the most important and hard to fill position in the group from that article to me is hands down cornerback. that leads me to take a lightning fast 6-0' CB justin glbert over any other player in that list. we have not had a #1 shutdown, man-on-man CB in chicago since i can remember and it has hurt us for decades. the need is there especially in today's pass oriented NFL. peanut is all but done and even then he was never a #1 CB in my opinion. we need REAL talent to fill this position and not some flyer on a guy in later rounds. we will probably not be picking this high again for sometime and the talent requirements at that position demands you draft one high in the first for your BEST chance at finding gold. there is absolutely no possible way i would take any kind of safety OR a defensive tackle over a corner of that caliber.
I agree a shutdown corner is gold, but we also don't know if they will turn gold or into coal. It will be a tough decision if Donald is also available.

I edited my last post to expand a bit... I think the "too short" myth has been busted the last few years. Take a look at the DT sack leaders the last few years 2013- Jason Hatcher(6'6") 11, Kyle Williams(6'1") 10.5, Jurrell Casey(6'1") 10.5 2012- Geno Atkins(6'1") 12 2011- Geno Atkins 7.5 (yes that lead the league) That's 3 different guys that have ranked in the top 2 among sacks by a DT the last 3 years. I really think teams might have to "reassess" the whole "too small" label, and think about the leverage these smaller guys create. It's also worth throwing out there again that Warren Sapp was only 6'2" and he is one of the best to play the position.
You know I was only kidding, I am number 2 on the Aaron Donald bandwagon. I just love the responses saying he is too small and he cannot play the run, yet he had 66 stops behind the line of scrimmage, meaning he is blowing by the dlineman and destroying the RB.
-
It's not that shocking to me to be honest. I've heard another guy call him the #3 prospect behind Clowney and Robinson which might be a little more realistic.
But...he's too short
-
Vernon Davis is also 6'-3" 250 lbs, ran a 4.4 forty, and has a beast physique. That takes years of sculpting, Thomas Jones was probably the last player the Bears had that any type of physique.
-
I now hate McClellin and hope he actually gets cut. How does a professiolbs athlete have the same build as me? Ridiculous for a guy who has the money, motivation, and need to do nothing but learn a Playbook and look like a brick shithouse.
The old proverb...a picture is worth a thousand words but does not tell the whole story. Yes, he looks like a 5'9 skinny kid. He cut 10 lbs, but looks lean/skinny. His offseason program mainly cut bodyfat by the looks. Have to remember he is still 6-3, 250 and the picture doesnt give you that. That picture tells me 5'9 200.
-
great tagline
Maybe, just maybe McClellin excels at this transition. I can see Shea and Bostic filling the SLB/MLB and Greene developing into a WLB , Greene was compared to Briggs coming out of the draft. If Bostic can grasp the MLB, he has leadership qualities. It's a lot to hope for, but with proper coaching, why can't it be done?

Again I should mention that I'm a ND hater, but still, I'm intrigued a bit by Tommy Rees as a 6R/UDFA. He went to high school with my cousin and he told me I just had to come out and see some of his games. Rees was a straight up monster.
He's got the tools, and I think Trestman might be the guy to put those tools into play.
Wasn't he dicked around a bit at ND?
Rees was replaced by Everett Golson who was more of a dual threat. Also, Rees threw some costly INTs that the fans didn't forget. But he does hold the completion record at ND. Maybe they are thinking UDFAs, with the QBs they brought in.
-
I'd be cool with it, Joyner, while small, is exactly the type of guy I want at FS. A guy who has corner experience who should really help on the back end and has the ability to drop down and cover slot WRs.
If he doesn't work out at FS then you try him at nickle the following year with McGill(who I like) moving into Peanuts spot.
He plays a lot bigger than his size suggests, reminds me a bit of Bob Sanders, same size, former Defensive PoY.
2R might be a bit of a reach though.
I of course love the Donald pick.
I posted a mock on another board with the Bears taking Donald, Ward or Bucannon, then Joyner rd 3. He would make a perfect nickle that can be a CB/S/OLB type rover. I then followed taking Brooks rd 4, wishful thinking lol. Our backfield would be sick with a front of Donald, Allen, Houston, and Ratliff.

I really think the Bears are high on Wilson, and I think it will be for good reason. I haven't heard about how much he's bulked up, but I'm sure he has down there with Marshall and company.
Hixon is another guy in the same mold as E. Bennett. Nothing flashy but he has a reliable set of hands.
I wouldn't absolutely hate to see them grab a guy in the 5th or 6th round, but in the 3-4? ya no thanks. Bears need to take advantage of the defensive depth in the 1st 4 rounds IMO. QB/RB/TE are bigger "needs".
I will agree SCS, WR is not the biggest need. If the bpa in rd4 is a WR and he is rated much higher than another position of need, then I can see the pick. This team will not fill all the holes in one offseason.
This year I'd like them to find starters at DT, S. A#2 RB and CB are high on my list. QB to groom as a backup should be a thought. Then possible TE, Cody Lyerla could be a steal. The first two picks have to be hits.
-
Your spot on, it takes two years and go with the BPA and fix the rest of the spots next year.
Looking at the 2015 draft class, it looks like it could be a healthy one for CB. I don't see much size over 6'-1", so maybe we take a flyer on one of the bigger ones this year.
1- Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB Oregon
2- PJ Williams CB FSU
3- Trae Williams CB MSU
4- Jalen Collins CB LSU
5- Alex Carter CB Stanford

Yeah, I'd actually prefer a FS/DT/DT start since I think there is a lot more depth at DT than FS. This would outstanding: 1. HHCD, FS, Alabama 2. Tuitt, DT, Notre Dame 3. Johnson, DT, LSU
plan a:
1-Donald DT
2-Tuitt DT
3-Terrence Brooks S
Plan b:
1-HHCD FS
2 Tuitt DT
3. A Johnson DT

To me the 2nd DT pick would have to be BPA, and I doubt a DT is BPA at that point. If we draft a DT in the first, our need for DT becomes the 4th-7th need on the team at that point behind S, CB, LB, and possibly TE, OL, QB. Now I can see us taking another DT in the 1st or 2nd next year, but I highly doubt we go that route in one draft and completely pass on S or CB in the first 2 rounds.
One thing I don't understand is how Tuitt is considered a second round player. Compare his game numbers and combine results with any of the other prospects and he is a top 3 or 4 DT. Early mocks had him in the top half on draft boards too. Even when Nix was lost for most of the season, Tuitt still played well despite being the target on the line. If he makes it to round two, Emery better get on the phone.
-
I suspect you say those things about any recruit, but I was just going by things Ive read.
Not at all, only ones I take some liking to. I have him flagged bc Trestman or Emery mentioned something about the ideal QB is 6'5". This kid is 6'6" and would need a lot of work, so I wouldn't take him with our first 5 picks.
-
The #1 thing Trestman will look at is accuracy and decision making, he doesnt fit that.
His accuracy is because of bad footwork, that can be worked on. His quickness and decision making can improve with condfidence. He is very raw because he was recruited as a TE in college. Didn't play the position until 2010. I think he is perfect to groom. He is also durable and played 40 straight games.
-
For a late round talent whose weaknesses seem like a perfect fit for Trestman's coaching strengths consider Logan Thomas. Lots of upside and the base talent, size, arm strength, accuracy when mechanics are right, is there to succeed in the NFL. For as much attention as we've given Jordan Lynch I have to think Thomas is also on our radar.
http://draftbreakdown.com/the-case-for-logan-thomas/
http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/players...93/logan-thomas
Inconsistent footwork and mechanics are a big reason for his erratic passing, struggling to reset his lower body when moved from his spot. Needs to stay balanced through his delivery. Suspect field vision and questionable passing instincts. Needs to speed up his eyes use and decipher his reads quicker.
He was a QB I looked into some since he matched up with some criteria that fit Trestman.

That draft and many before, Phil's first draft sure felt like Angelo was still pulling the strings. At least they threw anchor before the boat hit shore. I think repairs could be made this year to float again and then they can start adding the upgrades to operate at full speed next year.
