  1. Remember all the noise when Cutler was signed and how the Bears were crazy to give him that kind of money? Well, looks like the deal will fall in line or look great as other QBs contracts renew.

Kaepernick signs 6 year 126 million, Cutler 7 year 126.7.

Kaepernick guaranted 60 of it; Cutler 54 million.

Just wait to see what Cincy does with Dalton and then Seattle with Wilson. Our front office is right there with understanding contracts, glad we are out of the tunnel and finally looking up as a team again.

  2. How about we move on and give this site some better Bears input? Realize that what you write is etched in stone, so give the WWW your best. Debate all you want and keep it friendly. Personal attacks and vulgar languange were not allowed on here before. This used to be moderated closely, and I think since this has been a classy forum, leniency was given. All I know is some great posters have moved on. I would like to see them back and see new additions. Peace

  3. I may be an exception but I really don't see Briggs as a leader other than by his performance on the field. I can't find the article right now but he had some quotes recently that made him sound happy that someone else was taking over the play calling responsibilities. He's a quiet guy in some ways who just wants to come in and do his job. He is definitely respected in the locker room but I can't recall many players saying he was a coach on the field always getting guys into the right position ala Mike Brown years ago. Briggs was pretty clear last year that he wasn't comfortable making the calls in the defensive huddle.

By popular vote the majority here would trade him for a 2nd Rd pick. Those who wouldn't trade him at all are all-in that we can win the Superbowl this year and see no reason to take a risk. I said initially that if things were looking good with our young LB'ers in training camp I'd accept a 3rd but a 2nd Rd pick would close the deal for me before training camp.

Being a 7 time perennial probowler and probably the Bears best OLB in there glorified LBer history. He has been nothing but persistant at holding down that posisition. As for a play calling leader, he may not be. But as a leader the players can rally behind, watch, and listen too, he is definately a leader. If he comes back healthy, there's no reason that he cannot play at the probowl level. Trading him for potential is for a team in rebuild, but with the moves Emery made, we are not there.

Today I don't see the point on trading one of your better players.

  4. Briggs and Tillman are the remaining leadership. They both need to pass the torch and teach the newbies as much as they can. On the line, Ratliff has that role. A third rd pick is no longer a need with a team that will have a hard time cutting youth this summer.

  5. I am not sure but dont think anybody made the team from there OTAs performances. It is just a session getting people in the right spots and learning there specific assignments. Never really tells us much.

Just looking into this with the new CBA. A player can receive a playbook whenever, but the coach cannot contact/talk to a player until April 16th. OTA's are about setting the tone of practices and seeing where/who is behind.

I am not sure how many players are self preparing like the Bears Marshall, Jeffery, Cutler, Forte, Wilson, and Bennett, but they have put themselves ahead of the curve. Now we need someone on Defense that can unite the players for that type of unity and preparedness.

  6. On to the Cutler vs McCown debate! Hurray! We got a guy who is said to be a QB guru/Whisperer in charge of the offense, and we think he made the wrong choice? I woulda backed either choice knowing that Trestman more than likely had a big say in the decision. It's that simple. And McCown got to pile up his numbers against some dreadful defenses.

I think Kyle Orton would have put up better numbers, check that Jim Miller....but Rex is our Quarterback. :chair

  7. Wasn't there a separate post with pics from the first day of OTA's? Where did that go? I was going to ask, for those that may make it to see some of these practices, how did players like Christian Jones, Fendi Onubun and Willie Young look?

There were some pictures of the 3 day rookie practice. . . .

  8. NYC - If I'm a dick, then you're a giant crybaby. You've been that way since you bitched and whined on the last board because I took something overtly political out of your post, while leaving the remaining post and intent intact. What makes it ironic is you've since exposed your political leanings in other posts, and I actually agree with you politically. This, however, is not a board about politics - or at least it shouldn't be - and those posts should always be edited or removed (even if the current mods aren't doing it). BTW - If you go back on the board, nobody here was talking $5M for Urlacher. Most were saying just give him a little more than the low-ball, initial offer. If I recall, the majority were saying $2.5-$3 at very most. That likely would have helped Urlacher save face, the team would have done the right thing for a HOFer, and the team would have almost certainly benefitted as a result. Last but not least, to even compare Urlacher to Webb is ridiculously ignorant on various levels, and doesn't deserve to be justified in the slightest. scs - Because of PFF's support of Webb, who obviously sucked for anyone who actually watched him play football, their stats will continue to be severely flawed. Any PFF stats used to support or detract from an opinion are moderately interesting at best, throw-away at worst. Just watching film and compiling numbers doesn't guarantee a meaningful result. I give them kudos for trying, and doing what others haven't done, or would like to do, but their final product still requires significant upgrading. Ashkum - You gotta be shittin' me with that "locker room cancer" stuff. Urlacher was loved by pretty much all teammates (I haven't heard of a guy going against him, but I don't read everything so it's possible?). And as far as I know, all the coaches he played for loved him while he was in Chicago. Maybe our definitions of locker room cancer are different. He wasn't the best with the fans, but he was loved by teammates and cocahes. LT2 - Both your scenarios are possible, but Urlacher looked better at the end of his last year than at the beginning. This tends to support the "Urlacher is back and healthy" argument. I had not heard Peppers became a bad locker room guy. You're also right that it's POSSIBLE Urlacher would have caused waves, but that, just like his production last year, are unknowns. His production on the field in previous seasons and during his last season supports the concept that he would have made the team better last year, but there is no real support - that I know of - for him actually causing problems in the clubhouse amongst teammates or coaches. Alaska - Apparently you are the only one capable of actually grasping the very realistic concept that Urlacher, while diminished, was still better than anyone on the team last year, and almost certainly would have made the defense better. How much is anyone's guess. Nothing is a 100% certainty - nobody saw it coming when an "in his prime Knox" basically get retired on a single, spine-bending hit - but Urlacher's legacy, history, production, and upward trend towards the end of his last year say he would have helped the team.

You must not have read that post clearly because it said "if you can't tell I am being sarcastic" which was a tongue in cheek, overboard mockery of some of the bashing I see on certain Bears at times.

  9. Jerry was solid til he was forty,it was unreal. Him and Tim Brown were fun to watch with Trestman leading them as when Rice was in San Fran with him. Marshall has been vocal lately, even calling Trestman the best in the business a day ago.

Great guys to emulate. I also heard Marshall say he wants his career to match Chris Carters in terms of numbers. Having a steady offense the team can learn should only help all of the offensive players put up numbers. Great we are not juggling OCs anymore and hope Tucker can put together a solid unit to get respectability back for the D.

  10. Briggs made a comment in preseason that not everyone had bought in yet. After the season it was speculated that he was referring to Peppers.

I've seen many times in the corporate world where a new management team comes in and some of the existing employees (particularly really talented people) tend to groan and whine about all the changes. Their points usually tend to fall along the lines of "We've done this such and such a way for years and we've always performed at a high level." I've seen those types stay, I've seen them leave voluntarily, and I've seen them fired. The ones that stay tend to be miserable. The ones that leave end up better off because they find a new situation that they accept at face value because it's new.

Now in this instance, I have to imagine that Urlacher (who was very close to Lovie) might not be thrilled with ANYTHING that changed. And, being a leader, he could have had a negative influence on the younger guys simply by example. Now I for one would like to think that when games that count started, Urlacher's competitive spirit would take over and he would play at a high level. I'm just not sure that that fact alone could overcome the negatives that he might have displayed during TC that might have delayed the younger guys buying in and become a general distraction.

Personally, I was relieved when Urlacher wasn't re-signed - and in particular retired. I potentially saw a power struggle just because - well - Urlacher is kind of a vengeful dick.

As for why no other teams signed him, I think he still had enough in the tank to help some other team - and certainly the Bears if Lovie was still around. The problem may have come in where his accustomed position of leadership couldn't be given to a guy that might not even start, or would be a one year mercenary. And another concern would also have to be how much effort he would put into learning a new scheme if he was on a one year deal.

An example that comes to mind is Kreutz. He was THE leader on the offensive line for years. The Bears offered him less than he thought he was worth so he took a one year deal with the Saints for less than the Bears were offering. In October of that year, he quit the team. He just left the team because he wasn't feeling a love for the game any longer. Can anyone say bad signing by the Saints?

I'm not saying that would have happened with Urlacher either with the Bears under a new regime or with a new team, but there does seem to be the possibility that his pride may have gotten in the way and prevented him from being what he used to be on the field no matter who he may have played for.

I agree with that assessment and I believe that since they didn't have a head coach in line, their communication process with Brian wasn't clear because they didn't know exactly which way they would go with him. If Marenelli stayed I think Brian would have had his fairwell year. I believe he would've held the D together better with Marenelli as DC, but not with Tucker. Moving on was for the best

  11. Urlacher sucked, was overrated and a locker room cancer. Just like all the washed up Bears and the soon to be like Cutler and Briggs. As you can see, I am being sarcastic and don't understand the lack of appreciation it seems a lot of Bears receive. I understand the Bears trying to move on like a Pittsburgh would do. I think they went about it in the wrong way. They shoulda being more clear before negotiations about there intent to move on and tried to force him into retirement. From my understanding, Brian wasn't going to put his body through another year of NFL without great compensation. In his eyes, he felt his body would play for 5 million, the Bears wouldn't budge off two. He was upset there was no counter offers. So be it... he is retired

  12. I'm going to go out on a limb and say this deal was done a long time ago and Marshall wanted to bring Mental Health Awareness month in big and held off the signing until today. He has been nothing but first class since becoming a Bear and he has been a big inspiration/leader for the young Bears. What will top it off is a Championship. Congrats Brandon!

  13. Alright so I'm kinda getting ahead of myself here, but I find looking at the 2015 season very intriguing.....Look at who we already have locked up...

    QB-Cutler/Fales

    RB-Forte/Carey

    WR-Marshall/Jeffery/Wilson

    TE-Bennett/(Onubun)

    LT-Bushrod

    LG-Slauson

    C- ?

    RG-Long

    RT-Mills

    DE-Allen/Houston/Young

    DT-Ratliff/Ego/Sutton

    LB-Bostic/SMC/Greene/(Jones)

    CB-Jennings/Fuller/Frey

    SS- Mundy

    FS- Vereen

They have all of that AND about 30M in cap space.

Hypothetically speaking if Bostic takes a step forward, SMC proves to be a solid LB, Greene shows the talent I saw in him in college, Vereen takes the starting FS job and runs with it, and the Bears resign DLP to play center, what the hell are they gonna spend that 30M in cap space on!

If all goes right we're gonna be set up for yet another interesting offseason next year.

Phil is doing great things here.

I've started looking at this last week too. I wanted to make a list of 2015 draft prospects. My list has S, CB, TE, DT, LB, OT, and WR. They were listed in my order of priority, which will change.

  14. With all the new bodies on the club, I am curious who everybody thinks will have a breakout year that was already on the team.

My choice will be Cris Williams-We are in dire need of a new return man and I think he carries that torch.

He has speed to burn, he will also contribute at WR as our 5th wideout. With all the new players, he will find a place to succeed.

This is a good one. I could go Marquese Wilson who will have a bigger role, Chris Conte who could redeem himself, but I am choosing Shea McClellin. I think the Bears new scheme will be set up for him to be able to blitz often from different areas. His draft profile size and measurables were unbelievable, but he didnt work out being a smaller DE. Hoping those measurables make him excel as a LB.

  15. If you watch the games you will see Forte look toward the sideline and raise his hand and go out of the game this has happened a lot and may contribute to him being slighted by his peers in the top 100 players in the league. I personally think heis top 25 even if he takes himself out of the games from time to time.

I've never noticed. Wonder why he wouldn't want to be in there? For a guy that wanted his pay day, he needs to step up and be a bigger/better player.

  16. If only...I can barely get in a 30 minute run every other day. Wish I could devote the time..... Of course my body would probably reject anymore strain than what I barely ask it to do now.

Oh to be a professional athlete..

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to dedicate 10 weeks to transform your body. But trying to live the dream doesn't give us those opportunities.

  17. Thats is spot on what scouts think of him, to play WLB or situational pass rusher.

I really would like to see the coaches identify and groom our young in the right posistions. Seems like all are LBs are meant to be WLB except for Shea. I think Bostic and Shea should get good looks at MLB, Greene and Jones at WLB, and SLB will fall in place. We still don't know how our D will look with a new scheme installed. Can't wait for TC to begin...

  18. To waste a draft spot on him, he should be .

He is a craftsman, works hard to be the best. If he becomes one of the NFLs great punters, then it is worth the pick. Im sure every option was looked at in FAs and getting him was a priority after last seasons punter didn't help the team very often.

  19. Mad L as you can see this has kind of bothered me for awhile because Forte has never been the same since his 316 attmp season as a rookie. Since then he hasn't come close to that production until we got Marshall and Jeffrey and had 289 attmp. which also was the second highest yrds per @ 4.6. I don't like the tap out thing he does because I would prefer for him to be told to come off the field.

Forte took himself out? Or was it the OC? For most of Forte's years, the line was awful. They would use a jumbo package at the goal line and could never punch it in with the other back either. With Trestman, I haven't seen them remove Forte in those situations. For the most part, he would even come back in for goal line carries if he came out for a few plays. Now that we have a oline and a good offensive minded coach, I don't think we will see that happening much anymore.

  20. I think Cris Williams get his spot on the roster, the more I read about Jones the more I understand why he didnt get drafted. I think the possibility exists he doesnt make the squad.

I think Jones will make it, and challenge Shea for the SLB. Would they cut Shea? I doubt it, but Jones is a LB were Shea will be learning the positition. Going be a tough call when deciding on the 53.
