Campbell is on a 1 year deal according to the Google, so I wouldn't say that QB depth is useless for the Bears. In fact, I might well put it up there with middle linebacker depth, depending on what happens with Urlacher's contract before the draft next offseason and whether or not he finishes the season healthy. If the Bears staff, whoever that is, likes a middle-of-the-draft QB next year, and can get him in round 3-5, then that's a reasonable use of resources. It frees up a couple million that could be spent in free agency and doesn't remove the Bears' ability to add O-Line players in the upper rounds. Either money in free agency or a draft pick is going to have to be spent on the QB position for the Bears next offseason, if for no other reason than their current backup QB isn't under contract.
I don't see the Bears using a draft pick as a #2 back up for Jay Cutler. With his injury history, they will definately want a serviceable vet IMO.

When I talk about "you doing it" I mean to say that if you had your way the team would draft oline every round. The problem is you think you're smarter than most everyone else. The point I'm making is if you were so football smart youd be coaching and not Lovie. I've disproved your theory that OL should be picked in the early rounds because the Bears have done it twice and failed once and are on the way to doing it again. Skill players should be picked in the early rounds. More value. And for the record, I amended my thought on this kid being picked in round 2-4 and would be ok with a late flyer for him.
Come down off your high horse and mingle with us lowly common folk. We really aren't all that less educated than you.
Its not that it should be every pick, but at least one every year in rounds one through 3. Not every pick makes it, but you have to keep plugging. A great offensive line will make an above average rb a hof'er. As we watch tonight's disaster, I'd like to hear what the Cutler critics have to say.

I don't see Hester running away from anyone. He's still fast but not fast enough to pull away from players nor is he as elusive as he used to be.
I'm not sure what the Hester package is but typically when you have an elite player you design something for them to get 1on1 coverage where you expect them to break the first tackle and then make the big play. Even in those situations Hester gets tackled by the first defender.
Hester package hmmm, I think a Bush package would be more interesting. Seeing him run the wildcat with Forte and Hester in the backfield or split out wide.

I too thought that Williams may have benefited from staying at LT. Regardless, I can't help but think there must have been a reason why he didn't. I know he had injury issues coming out of college. I don't necessarily agree that Tice "dicked" with Williams' playing time and chose his pet in Webb. I think, as I've said before, that Tice worked with what he had.
I'm beginnig to have strong doubts about Carimi. You compare him this year to last, he looks physically different. Sure he's still tall but he looks smaller...weaker. Something is going on with him and I don't think he can hold up at Tackle much longer. Guard maybe?
Now if you were in either Lovie's or Emery's shoes, I'm sure that the Bears would have one of the best OL's in the league. There would be across the board 1st rounders in each position and all would be bound for Canton. But the very arguement you make for Lovie's choosing top rated talent for the DL has only hurt the point you're trying to make. Where is the Bear's defense currently rated? And why? Because their DL is probably one of the best. Most due to the rotation they have and getting fresh players in for every few plays. There is no question the correlation to Peanut and Jennings' success this year is in large part due to the DL's ability to pressure the QB's. Thusly so is the improved play of the LB's and the Safeties. They are all inter-related. And interestingly enough, Lovie's forte (no pun intended) is Defense.
Consistently thoroughout the years the Defense is what has made Chicago teams. Heck, even in '85 the Defense was better than the Offense. "Monster's of the Midway" did not come from the powerful offensive teams the Bears produced over the years.
You are right, Carimi came into camp 10 pounds lighter, and added muscle to his leaner frame. He should be quicker and stronger...
Couple things with Carimi is, he is going into his 9th NFL game and his knee is still probably not 100%. I think it is still too early to claim him as a bust. Sometimes it takes a year or two for these players to get there body/mind up to nfl caliber.

I only look at the first 3 rounds, because those are normally the picks that are expected to start. Rounds 4-7 are more for projects, backups, and ST. Now you can find gems in the later rounds, but the odds are increasingly against you as the picks get later.
Just looking at the first 3 rounds since 2005, the Bears selected 6 DL and 2 OL. For the 2 years where the Bears selected OL, they also selected DL in the first 3 rounds. The picks like Dvoracek, Bazuin, Harrison, and Gilbert look really bad now, and weren't that great back then.
Going forward, OL should be addressed annually in the first 3 rounds, with at least one pick.
I agree, said this the past 4 years. Hoping Emery believes in this route also. There are a nice group of potential OLTs in this class and I would suspect the Bears seen this before we did and passed on reaching on a tackle like Rieff.

According to 670 the score, Bears negotiating with Lovie Smith on a two year extension.

I would be happy with the draft addressed like this:
RD 1 = ODAY ABOUSHI OLT 6-6 310 VIRGINIA
RD 2 = KEVIN REDDICK ILB 6-3 240 NORTH CAROLINA
RD 3 = TRADE (BRANDON MARSHALL)
RD 4 = ALVIN BAILEY OG 6-5 319 ARKANSAS

Jason, maybe Williams is just a nudge better but the long term outlook says play Webb. We may know Williams ceiling and since his contract expires after this year it might not be enough "better" to play him. Webb may not be the longterm answer either, but this gives us time to draft a player next draft and have a tc camp battle for playing time.
This is the only viable reason I see, otherwise I think Williams would be playing somewhere along the front 5.

They were butchering the game all night with names.
It was obvious that Gruden hit the sauce tonight!
-
No problem with this at all. We all know Cutler has leadership issues. Either it gets fixed or it smolders. Some of this is good and Cutler will grow from it. I'm not sure about Webb, because it seems there is no light on or fire lit. If it continues, Lovie, Url and Briggs will smooth the locker room out. I'm sure Jay has made ammends with Webb by now. Now, we'll see how Cutler chooses his moments.
I wish Jay would challenge his oline more. I have no issues with it. He has gotten killed way to often. Webb needs to toughen up and maybe getting yelled at and bumped will wake him up.
-
Its one thing for a RB to call out the line, but when a QB does so you better get things together. Webb just does not have what it takes to be an nfl lineman. You do not see any LT's in the league that tweet or fb like a little girl does. Webb needs to get a man card ordered today.
-
It doesn't absolve them...but no offensive line was going to perform well with that game plan.
Jason, ive been with you on this for for what seems like almost a decade. When the board was about bashing Grossman and Benson, I defended them pointing out the horrid play of the line. Not that I wanted this team to keep those two, but good teams dont draft high qbs and rbs and not build around them. Angelo bought some time with fa's, but failed to replenish there. Point is, if we were stock piled with great linemen starting then, we would be in position to star drafting replacements for Urlacher/Tillman etc. We are behind the curve by two years it seems and to try and catch up, we have to trade our high draft picks. Lets hope a good gm can get this fixed.
-
The fake punt was a freak thing. Dave Toub is the best special teams coach in the NFL. I don't blame that on Lovie.
Peace
I havent been impressed with special teams this year. We are not a top five st yet. I'll give it two more games since these first two weeks have been a blur.
-
This team every year has avoided the offensive line. If we do not address it this offseason, I'm thowing in the towel. What happened to the line is fine and adding a WR like Marshall ane Jeffery will fix the problem? Well the bright side is this years draft is loaded with OTs. I can really see the path the Bears have planned and that is to play Webb, let Williams walk since his contract expires and let the draft pick compete with Webb next year. Since we are short on picks this coming draft, we need to take two linemen with rounds one and two. A young guard is in dire needs too. The rest of the dratt can go defense. Then the following year we can go all out on D.

I pulled off I80 in Omaha and found a bdubs!!!

Man you guys are way off on this. What he said was the endurance of the leg is not totally back yet. Not that its hurt or otherwise. He went on to say Cazrimi played really well in the last game and the leg will be fine with game play.
here is the link to video of the interview.

Thats how I took it too Grizzly. It's a conditioning issue that will take time to regain.

Unless the winner of the Webb/Williams battle, not to mention Spencer, makes ridiculous strides during the season, I will be pissed, once again, if the Bears don't invest heavily in the OL. Just like the last five years or so, it's been the key piece holding the offense back. This upcoming draft is absolutely loaded with OL talent in the first and second round, and skipping both rounds for a LB or DT replacement would be a mistake. Again.
Reminds me of the Einstein (maybe) quote: Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again but expecting different results.
I completely agree we will need to add in that department hopefully in RD1 with OLT, But I also do not want to reach if the talent is not there. Like this year, Riely Reiff was available and as much as I want oline I wasn't upset we passed on him.
The way the depth is looking this year at OLT, I think we may be pleased. I truly expect another season out of Urlacher so LB can wait until after RD1 unless that is our only option.

I understand what you are thinking, but Clutts had more value to the team....he played special teams could be used as a long snapper and as a FB that can catch and his blocking was better than Unga and Adams. Also Unga has never made the 53 man roster in 3 years so why keep him?
He was redshirted his rookie year and took his Mormon duties last year. So they don't know exactly what he can do. Clutts was a great lead blocker, but unga can do the same at a lower level but play a bigger role in a passing game and as a runner. I can see him moved up by mid season. I did like Clutts and think we will miss he lead blocker.
Plus Unga is just as fun to say as Clutts.
I guess the main argument I was pleading is I like him on the practice squad. Having him may have helped on the decision to trade Clutts, but he's still not on the 53. Now keeping Allen, I don't understand unless they plan on possibly releasing Booker if he fumbles.
-
Unga sucks IMHO...we should have kept Clutts and cut TE Adams
That's just an opinion, fine. The team felt differently. Clutts will be missed, but keeping Adams is the direction Tice wants to go. Kliensasser is the route I see with keeping the TEs. At least we got something for him too.
Unga holds value if Bush goes down for short yardage. Forte hasn't been successful there and we know Booker or Allen are just too small. It's a wise move having insurance on a practice squad.
-
Yes. An what do the coaches see in Unga? He continues to hang around for some reason.
I'm glad we're holding onto Unga. We invested in him and this is our first glance at him. He has some decent skills coming out of college and now that he's in camp, maybe we can translate what we saw. It's practice squad, so not a big deal. Imo. If Bush goes down, Unga could become a perfect goal line back. Pull up his draft profile, I see Toby Gerhart.

Couldn't agree more we've had too many "projects" at the safety position which is why we change them like we change undewear. I wish we'd stop just throwing crap at the wall to see what sticks. Let's draft some true studs who are at this position naturally.
Te'o is a friggin beast at LB as an Irish fan I've be been able to see this kid play year after year. Who knows if he'll be on the board when we pick but I'd love this guy in a Bears uni. I've only seen the ND vs Navy game (nice to see them win big against a team they should beat. going to be a tough schedule though especially for those inexperienced CB's.)
Will be fun watching Saturdays to see who might be playing on Sundays for our beloved Bears.
I think we will have to wait on drafting a safety and sign a solid vet while we develop Hardin. First two rounds will be olt, dt, or lb.
I have a feeling once Urlacher is done, we change or philosophy. Unless we find another LB with his speed and range.
-
I love football season. Now that college season has started, I like to follow my team Notre Dame, but more importantly I like to follow top players I'd like to see the Bears draft. Today I'm watching North Carolina, they have a LB Kevin Reddick I've seen some mocks with the Bears taking in the 2nd.
How about we use this post to mention players we like for the Bears.
-
Looks like he was traded to the Texans for CB Sherrick McManis. More depth......
Carimi = bust?

Too bad we don't have a 3rd Round pick haha! But I have Barrett Jones or Dallas Thomas as my round 1 selection.
