I think Cutler's faults are well known around the league considering the number of OC interviews that Trestman had this year. Kubiak is one of the few HC candidates that actually may want to keep him around, more than a stop gap. We know Shanny still thinks Cutler is a franchise QB.
I don't want to see a team plan around Cutler being their QB for the next 3 or 4 years again. I definitely won't be watching the games as religiously if they do.
Hopefully the hire is someone that can make Cutler better for 2 years, but will also be a great HC beyond that thought. Targeting a coach just for Jay cannot be a reason for choosing your HC. I think Pace has that in mind. I think Kubiak is being mentioned because his offense revolves around a running game. Pace mentioned about getting the Bears back to its roots of defense and running. Having a strong run game, like Seattle, Dallas, and even GB helps any QB. Who knows, maybe having this type of offense will have you rigorously watching if they become relevant again.
Kubiaks style blocking was also mentioned years ago earlier to get the most out of Fortes style of running.

I HATE the notion of rebuilding. I know it's a popular idea because of what the Cubs have done, but when has it ever consistently worked for an NFL team. I think of all the teams that seems to be in continuous rebuilding mode: Rams, Raiders, Browns, Bills . . . not to mention the Lions, who finally made the playoffs but were one and done. Meanwhile, the great franchises simply retool and reload.
If we scrap next year, there is no guarantee that things will get better.
I think of where the Cowboys were at a year ago at this time. There was talk they'd scrap their 100 million $$$ QB for Johnny Football. Everyone seemed to think they needed to rebuild. With good leadership, we can win next year.
Agree, I just don't think rebuild and NFL go hand in hand like you see in MLB. It's either you suck or don't. In the NFL, you have contracts that are tough to move and ramifications if you cut a player. The way out is numerous years of good drafting and good coaching.
If Pace can put together the good coaching, we have some talent to work with. Talent that we might not have known with under Tuckers D were numerous times LB n DB were not on the same page. On O, we couldn't get success in the first 15 plays that are scripted and practiced, which tells me there was something majorly wrong. We can argue QB or playcalling, but I don't remember very many runs in the first quarter.
Go out and get these coaches before we talk about we have to trade/cut this player or that, because it might take 3 years beore we see a return on those types of moves.

was Garza better at G or C?
The reason I ask, I thought its been mentioned that he was better at G. Why not Move Long to RT, have Mills as a back up and put Garza back at G. Then draft or sign a Center.
Wouldn't that make the Oline a whole lot better, that is if Garza would be capable at performing well at G. The Bears will get Slauson back.
RT- Long
RG- Garza
C- player to be named
LG- Slauson
LT- Bushrod
or swap Long and Bushrod........Maybe Im wrong but Long was drafted to one day be a T.
My ideal draft would be:
1-Stanley/Scherf LOT (Peat? )
2-Denzel Perryman/Eric Kendricks MLB
3-Hronis Grasu/Reece Dismukes C
4-best S

Bears do have a good deal of cap space, and I do think there's a need for a WR that can get down the field quick buttt I can't see them spending any money on one. Maybe if they trade BM, but even then I highly doubt it. Gimme a free safety and a middle linebacker. McCourty and Brandon Marshall (the LB) would be my guys.
I think we should trade BM to GB. Have them do a sign and trade with Cobb.

Why not have Pace report directly to George?
George only needs to know one thing as chairman and that is what it cost and how much are we making. That is why Pace doesn't report to him. I am sure Georgey will have daily communication with Ryan, but as for reporting, George wants one report to look over the business as a whole. Teddy is good with the finances, but not football, so he will allow Pace the same powers as Angelo/Emery. The only time Teddy steps in is if ownership tells him too. For example we just seen with Trestman and Emery both fired. I also believe the McKaskeys over stepped Angelo in 2006 when the media was fussing over Lovie being way under paid and then so when they fired Jerry. Teddy is the middle man and sure it would be nice to have a football player with a great business mind to run the whole show, but those guys are rare or real old. The Bears structure is fine and to think this is the first time I can remember that the gm isn't forced to keep a coach.

All this Marshall has to go is garbage. Until Ryan Pace decides this, speculating is what it is. If teammates are afraid of Marshall, than maybe they are the ones that need to go. Brandon is a loud mouth. We all hate loudmouths. He is also a competitor, showed how to play through pain, and caring enough to help his teammates get better as players. He gives back to the community, maybe more than most. Teammates don't want him to step up and be vocal, but they sit on their hands in the locker room. It took Gould to tell Marshall to STFU. Gould the freaking kicker. That is why Pace stressed finding leaders. Who else tried taking a leadership role really late? Tim Jennings. This franchise needs leaders. They need captains, not some damn rotation bs.
I for one think Marshall will mature even more so with the birth of his twins. Having a strong HC will help also.

Not as comical as your butt love for Jemarcus Webb......... Let me ask you this, when our new GM needs to lean on someone would you rather him lean on Ted Phillips or Bill Polian or Ron Wolf???? Im betting you are not going to answer Ted Phillips.....Ill say it again, I want the strongest team, front staff and management group possible for the Bears. If you think that is possible with Ted Phillips you are wrong.
Then why even hire a GM who has full control of the football ops? Sure he said he will lean on these guys, but ultimately his decision is his. Accorsi was mentioned as well, I am sure he will keep ties with him through this process and after. Ted Phillips job is to be the reporter between owners and Ryan Pace, if they feel Pace needs more help, maybe they can hire a VP?

I think of the HC prospects mentioned I am most interested in the DC from Seattle.
Arizona bombed on D against Carolina in the playoffs, scares me a bit
Austin, I guess because he is with Detroit, would be a distant 3rd.
Maronne (sp) is completely off my Radar, do not like the reports I am hearing
I like Shanny but fear a power struggle with the GM if he comes in and has any success so not a long term answer IMO
I do not see a power struggle, when Pace has all say in football decisions. Shanny can walk if he doesn't like it.

First, thanks to all of you for the play by play!
Second, it sounds like Ted isn't stepping aside as we had hoped. With that friggen moron still near the football decisions I'm NOT satisfied. With the Blackhawks it took a complete separation of business and game functions to get to where they are today. If Ted is really still involved (and I can only hope behind the scenes things are really different) then we're no better off than we were 6 months ago.
He has to report to Ted but he has the power to make all football decisions. Ted is only getting updates, not approvals. Nothing wrong with that imo.

@BobWarja: I realize my credibility is in question since my source was wrong about Ballard, so take this with a grain of salt, but next Bears coach...
@BobWarja: ...will be Todd Bowles. No, not the same source.
Possibly? He does get the benefit of being snowed in in Chicago, no hurries to catch a flight out.

How long did it take you to form this opinion of Emery?
Emery's biggest fault was his coaching choices and not leading when this team needed it. I will not hold judgement on his players he drafted or signed until we have competent coaching run the course.

A Running back in the second round?! And I thought I was crazy!
Also not waiting that long to get another corner either
Forte is not an in between the tackles RB. Carey is, but can he be an NFL every down back. If the Bears are to succeed, they will have to run 25+/game. I would prefer Gordan, but I think he goes 15-20 and Gurley can take his time healing. Fortes contract is up after next season also.
If they can get extra picks, throwing deep or swinging for the fence on a offensive playmaker is a bonus.

An unusual rumor that New England wants Shaq Thompson and may try to trade up had me thinking of a swap.
#1-7=1500, for #1-31=600, next years 1st= 500, #2-62=296, #3-94=116
1-31 = Benardrick McKinney MLB
2-39 =Todd Gurley RB
2-63=Hronis Grasu C
3-71=Durrell Eskridge FS
3-95=Jake Fisher OT
4-103=Quinton Rollins CB
5-Denver
6-WR

I'm still not seeing a leak anywhere other than what hub said, and hub didn't say anything about him getting cut.
Regardless, some leverage would remain, as if he's released (not gonna happen) then the whole league can get their hands on him, while in a trade you don't run the risk of losing out to him.
The leaks are the rumblings that writers are speculating. I don't think any team will trade more than a 4th for him. The way rookie WRs have produced, plus a trade leaves his contract intact, and no team will want his dead money on the books.
I am sure there are Bears that do not like him, but the team is better with him than without.

Didn't know where else to put this, so just created a new thread. Given that we spent the time to interview him, he's clearly someone on the radar. Tweet was from Peter King of SI. There was talk that Quinn was hoping to work with the Vikings Asst. Gm, who turned down all interviews and chose to stay in Minny.
I do like Seattles D and teams are sure to try and copy that. Their D was good the year before Quinn took over too. I put their success in Wilson emerging at QB. The energetic HC, OC that picked and groomed Wilson, a innovative GM that found success in big late round DBs and Brady/Quinn running a #1 D 3 years in a row.
Does Quinn turn out like Gus Brady? Hard to evaluate Brady, I'd like to see how Jax plays 2 years from now. But I think Quinn can be a good candidate.
-
I could warm up to this idea if someone were interested in giving us a 2nd rounder for him. But then, probably, only if the new HC and GM thought this was the best move given the offense they planned on running.
Well the "leak" already ruined any leverage in a trade. Who would give up a 4th or higher for a ticking time bomb if the Bears are realeasing him and his contract get terminated?. I don't think Marshall has been bad, but you do have to worry about him.
-
Sometimes bringing in older and more experienced is the way to go. Look at the Giants approach with Coughlin. Shanny also should have a good network of coaches to call upon, compared to an up and coming coordinator. Since I have no say on what the Bears will do, I just try to stay optimistic with their decisions.

His records are due to longevity and the era he is playing in.
How has the Bears franchise been since he took over? The Bears have been in the playoffs once and won 1 out of 11 games against their biggest rival. His 6 years has been a dark era.
The Bears won't produce better than that, until they unhitch their wagon from Cutler. If the Bears stuck with Kordell Stewart for 6 years, he'd hold all the records too. He'd still be a bad QB.
Kordell wasn't good enough to have a new contract offered to him. He didn't cost 2-1st round draft picks either. I only support Jay because I think it would be foolish to get rid of him until a capable replacement can be groomed. There are no perfect candidates that will ever hit FA, teams do not let go of those players. We hold the #7 pick and there still isn't a qb worth that risk to groom into a franchise qb. Hopefully by the 2016 draft, there will be one. How Jay needs to be handled is not to coddle him, he starts getting careless with the ball, you sit him.

Not sure Allen is a fit as wither a DE or a OLB, but the rest is possible.
I happen to think Bostic and Jones would be a pretty good duo at ILB. I've always thought that one should be there for coverage (Bostic) and one for run support (Jones).
Young should be solid of the edge, and while I think the 3 other guys you listed can be solid I'd be real tempted to draft one of the freaks at the top of the draft.
Ray or Beasley would be easy. The draft would make so much sense if we had that D because I do not like our choices in our current scheme. Round 2 good chance to grab a ballhawk FS or If Peters CB or Oakman DE falls.

I really want a defensive minded guy brought in and what's interesting is a lot of those guys, including Bowled who they plan on interviewing, run a 3-4 D.
I smell the annual 3-4 defense thread coming around the corner.
Just think, we could have had Bowles already. If only they chose Arians over Trestman lol.
3-4 is possible.
DE-Sutton, Houston, Allen,
NT-Ratliff, Ferguson, Paea
OLB-Young, McClellin, Washington, Bass
ILB-Bostic, Jones, Greene
CB-Fuller, Jennings
S-Mundy, Vereen
Schefter: Bears high on Gary Kubiak per sources
in Bearstalk
I think Ferguson can be a good NT in a 3-4.
