If you know you are getting that, yes.
I've been scrounging MLBs since Urlacher. 2013, I wanted Alec Ogletree who was a converted S, big and fast also. He is doing well at STL. I was intigued by Mosely, but felt other positions were a higher priority. Now I see this kid and he has the perfect mold and he has been successful at the college level. Just to think we might be able to duplicate the 2000 draft on finding our Urlacher and Mike Brown....heck even our 1999 Olin Kreutz. But we know Emery will do something completely off wall and draft a top WR.
-
Would drafting another Urlacher be considered a premium like OT/DE. Because I think we can land McKinney 6'-5" 250 and 4.55 speed. The guy is a leader and can play. We might even be able to trade down a few spots, gain a 3rd and still draft him. Draft a FS round 2, Cody Prewitt, Gerod Holliman, or Darron Smith and the a Center RD3 Reece Demukes or Hronis Grasu.
-
Now, I do not watch college football but if the Bears are in the top 10 and they identify a franchise QB than they should trade up to secure the pick and doing so should not be too costly. Then the rest of the draft should focus on defense and the following year 2016 then focus on offensive line when you let the second year QB battle cutler for starting job.
Trading up is basically out. It would cost a 4thRD just to move up one spot. A 2nd RD to move up 5 spots. Mariota will be #1 overall, which will cost us next years 1st and this years 3rd . Winston is reachable, but I wouldn't touch him with our 9th-12th pick. With Cutler signed at least 2 years, might as well rebuild the D and find a Center.

I agree on all except for the Bostic pick. Here are picks around Bostic, now we obviously couldn't get any of the players ahead of him, but look at the quality after, up to almost 30 picks later:
46 - Kiko Alonso, LB
47 - Gavin Escobar, TE
48 - LeVeon Bell, RB
50 - Bostic
51 - David Amerson, CB
52 - Jamie Collins, LB
58 - Montee Ball, RB
61 - Eddie Lacy, RB
63 - Travis Kelce, TE
65 - Larry Warford, G
66 - Sio Moore, LB
69 - Honey Badger, CB
71 - T. J. McDonald, S
74 - Terrance Williams, WR
75 - Terron Armstead, OT
76 - Keenan Allen, WR
An example would be the 50th pick could've landed us #59 and #102 (NE), and we could picked any player after Ball, and had an extra pick 15 before Greene in the 4th. Obviously hindsight is 50/50, but there were options. We went back to back LB, so we could've easily went with Warford after Long.
We came into the draft with a huge need to replace Urlacher. I wanted Ogletree and it may have worked out taking him and then Warford. But as for finding a MLB, I think they chose the best guy with what was out there. I would assume we tried to trade down, but there probably wasn't any takers. If we draft a MLB this year, I think Bostic will do better at WLB and Jones/McClellin can battle out the SLB spot.

Fuller?????????
not that I want Emery drafting
Not giving Emery a break, this team has been short on having draft picks for years. Traded picks for Cutler, Marshall, Gaines Adams have crippled this franchise. Year one sucked and Shea may take another big step on his final year to save some face for that class. Year two, missing a 3rd RD pick, we take Bostic. I do not see another LB drafted after him that has done squat in the nfl. Arthur Brown was a big name talked about and he hasn't played much. We've been short on picks and some of those draft classes were weak in talent. Last year the class was good, and I think the Bears did good filling positions of need. This coming draft looks good too...

Has he said that or something? Even his 1 year as OC in Nola the team ranked 29th in rushing attempts. Bears are 28th this year and were 24th last year.
He was the running coordinator last year and called the running plays. Statistically, were not far off from run to pass ratio. Also, linemen prefer to run block, he was a oline coach.
-
What the Bears need is a franchise QB. Get one of those and the rest of what you do looks a lot better to outside observers. Take that away from the franchises being discussed and the one that really stands out is Baltimore. The guy calling the shots there is Ozzie Newsome and he learned his craft working for Belichick in Cleveland.
The other constant those franchises have is stability in the organization and it's one thing the Rooney's have emphasized in Pittsburgh. They ride out the rebuilding storm with their head coaches. Likewise Green Bay has been consistent with their offense, at least in terms of the system. When you have that stability it's easier for new players to get up to speed because veterans know all the details and it's easier for a player like Matt Flynn to look good. Their defense has flipped around a few times and that's where they usually struggle. When you think about it, Green Bay usually enters the offseason focused on fixing their D yet for all that attention they can't get it done, at least consistently to a top 10 unit which, if you focus that many resources on it, should get there. Aaron Rodgers makes people overlook that no differently that Tom Brady makes people overlook defensive issues in New England.
That is true. Jay is our franchise QB, and we have him next year for sure and most likely the following. I heard that one option is stripping Trestman of the playcalling. We know Kroemer is all about running the ball, maybe a more balanced attack is all this team needs and they also need to change their movements because defenses know were we are running.

I'm starting with the GB Fudge Packers. Only because in 2005 with the number 4 or 5 pick the Bears selected Cedric Benson and with the 24th pick that same year GB picked Aaron Rodgers. Man, look at difference one draft pick can make. President is Mark Murphy, but he also has an executive committee. Not sure if Mark Murphy has final say but I like the idea of a committee. Below them is the GM Ted Thompson. He is in control of everything personnel wise, and coaching staff wise. McCarthy has gone on record that he has nothing to do with the roster. He is paid to coach whatever roster is put in front of him GB has built their team through the draft. Ted Thompson has been given a lot of credit for his. If you look at this franchise you know who is responsible for what. It would be easy to hold someone accountable. 1. Mark Murphy and the committee are the top 2. Ted Thompson answers to them 3. McCarthy answers to Ted. Holding people accountable is very crucial. Is McCaskey (Chairman on top) with Ted Phillips (President and CEO) in charge and answering to him and does Emery answer to him? Ted does have the title of CEO/President. So Im going to go with him running the whole show. George was put in place in 2011. So Im only going to hold him accountable from then on. The only constant from before then is Ted Phillips, he has been the CEO since 1999. If Ted Phillips is the one calling all the shots then lets look at what he has done 1. Hired JA= which hind sight is always 20/20 was a bad move 2. Waited too long to fire JA 3. Hired Emery = if Trestman (this is if Emery had total control of who was hired) was the wrong hire then you have to look at Emery being the wrong hire too JA did hire Lovie and Lovie was a good coach(this is going on the idea that JA hired Lovie and not Ted). I think Lovie should have been fired earlier than he was, because there was a GM change I will put this blame on Ted. The Goal in the NFL is to win a SB, since 1999 the Bears have been to one SB. The Bears once had a strong roster(heavy on the defensive side) that was driven into the ground by JA. This all happened under Ted Phillips watch. If Ted Phillips was in charge, he fired JA(a move that needed to be done) and hired Emery. Then Lovie was fired and Trestman was hired. The Bears have gotten worse. Ted Phillips does not have a football background. Maybe if he did he would have seen where the Bears where headed under JA. Maybe he would have seen where the NFL was going (pass happy) before everyone else. Mark Murphy does have a football background. Not saying this is the end all be all but its something to look at. Next up Im going to go over the Ravens front office.
Here is a big one... after Lovie took the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006, the Chicago Bears gave him an extension. In that extension, he gained some power over personal, meaning telling Jerry who to draft. He let go of Rivera, meaning full control over the coaching staff/contracts.
I would like to know what Angelo was doing with that contract extension? Why would he sign over a chunk of the power over personal to Lovie? That tells me Phillips or Mikey McCaskey are making the decisions instead of letting the GM do his work.

Ravens Owner Biscotti President - Cass GM- Ozzie As Alaskan said, Ozzie is the guy in charge. Ozzie has kept the Ravens at a high level of the NFL for years. I don't think anyone questions who is making the calls here.
I would give a lot of credit to the Ravens due to their President Richard "Dick" Cass also. The guy could be in line to become the next commissioner of the nfl and is highly thought of by NFL owners.

why? so we can all see how stupid we are? thanks
Because I can. Why would I demean anyone here? It was interesting to see thoughts on the whole process and the 9 page thread was interesting as well but is locked.. Posts on how Trestman wears on players/coaches and hasnt held a job more than two years seem accurate. I think most were intrigued with Trestman and an offensive mind was a high priority.

I can't imagine Cutler isn't the starter next year. Ride it out, let him build some confidence in Wilson, and build on next year.
If the offense continues to sputter next year then its plausible they take that 3M hit in 2016 to get out of that contract.
I can see that, along with Trestman getting axed. There is too much riding $ wise to see a big changeover. They may promote the Dline coach to DC and find a new ST coach, but I think they try to stay on course.

I just have a feeling that this is going to be brought up at some point. They will point to the injuries on the O-Line to Slauson, Mills, DLP, and Britton, and on the D to Peanut, Briggs, Houston, Conte, Ratliff, Fuller and say that those were the reason this team struggled all year with consistency.
I hope not, but I see it coming.
Even TE Zach Miller and Marquess Wilson hurt... Wouldn't it have been nice to stay healthy for once. What could've been? Injuries did hurt, seems like too much. I hope it isnt the excuse given though
-
These days it seems like the talent at the college level is getting better and better so I wouldnt say 4 first rounders. They just have to hit on those guys.
True, was being a little sarcastic, but we do need homeruns. Now the thought of having a need to replace the QB has to loom in the next two drafts.
-
...like CJ Mosely in Baltimore, Kahlil Mack in Oakland or Luke Keuchly (a few years back) in Carolina
It seems we are 4 first RD draft picks away. I do think finding a stud MLB is the biggest need. Our middle is soft and gets exposed in the passing game. If we can come out of the offseason with a Brian Urlacher and Mike Brown draft, we can might see a respectable D again. If there is a way to trade down a few slots and draft Benardrick McKinney MLB and trade back up for Gerod Holliman S, we may have something. We have so many holes QB, RB, speed WR, Oline, S, CB, it can go on and on. But if we are stuck with these coaches again, fix the D holes first through draft and then plug offense with 1 yr fa deals.
-
Lol! I can't disagree. I somewhat feel the same way. With the turnover, attitudes and injuries of the D, I simply am not sure. What I saw was a defense that was often out of place. Was it the combo of above or Tucker? I'll have to leave that one for Trestman.
If there is a way to convince Polian, it would be nice. I am rooting for the Patriots to win the Superbowl. Then Brady and Bilichick retire together on top. Offer Belichick a lucrative deal or even some ownership to become President and right this franchise. He can decide who stay or goes down to Staley the mascot.

Landon Collins is gonna get a lot of mentions around these parts, but give me Holliman. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap300000042...a-young-ed-reed I agree with Adam, give me a S, CB, OT in the first 3 rounds. Depending on how Louis-Jean and C. Jones play down the stretch we could see CB become less of a need and LB become more of a need.
SCS, you and I seem to agree on a lot of players as I've been touting Holliman on another board for a month or so now. He is now popping up in mocks either in RD's 1 or 2. I also meant to add in this list Shaq Thomson if we think he can play MLB. If he projects as WLB, I think we should pass as Bostic, Jones, and Greene seem like WLB projects themselves.
-
If these guys were available, who should the Bears choose? To help with that process, here is a list of possible 2nd/3rd RD prospects we can nab too. Sure it's early, but always fun too
Round 1:
1. Landon Collins S Alabama:Big hard hitting SS, covers side line to side line.
2. Gerod Holliman S Louisville: CB converted to S and replaced Pryor. Holliman leads NCAA in INTs. Size/Speed/Instincts
3. Marcus Peters CB Washington: Shut down corner, fiery attitude. Paired w Fuller our CBs will be locked for years.
4. Dante Fowler DE Florida: Solid DE that can get to the QB
5. Brandon Scherff OT Iowa: OLT that can step in an be a probowl OLG next to Bushrod.
6. Benardrick McKinney ILB Miss St: Big (6-4), fast, athletic LB that has the tools to possibly be the next big LB in Chicago.
Round 2:
Alex Carter CB Stanford, Ronald Darby CB FSU, Cody Prewitt FS Ole Miss, Derron Smith FS Fresno St, Erik Kendricks ILB, Markus Golden DE Mizz, Shilique Calhoun DE Mich St. , Ty Sambrailo T Colo St, Jake Fisher T Oregon,
Round 3:
Kurtis Drummond S Mich St, Josh Shaw CB USC, AJ Johnson ILB Tenn, Hronis Grasu C Oregon St, Tre Jackson G FSU Reese Dismukes C Auburn...
I'm going with: Landon Collins S, Erik Kendricks ILB, and Josh Shaw CB because Collins fills the a void left vacant for a decade. Kendricks plays at a high energy and makes plays, and Shaw has 1st RD talent/size/speed but was suspended for lying about an ankle injury which questions his character.
As for passing on a pass rushing D lineman, we invested heavy there last year. At DE, Houston, Young and Allen are under contract yet. Washington is starting to show some ability too. DT- I would re-sign Paea who is showing flashes of his ability, Ratliff is older but still under contract and then Ferguson/Sutton are there to develop/rotate.
-
I am trying to figure out exactly what they did to cater to him? Bringing in talent around him? Upgrading the Offensive Line? Giving him a big contract extension to solidify the position? If we kept Orton or re-signed McCown, and did the same free agent moves, would the Bears be catering to them? I get the perception, but I would think that is the normal way to build a team, start with the QB, then put in the pieces around him. What resources need to be shifted? Look at our major free agents signings this offseason: Allen, Houston, Young, Mundy, and we drafted Fuller, Ferguson, Sutton, and Vereen. All defense. I believe we have only drafted offense in the first 3 rounds (of the Emery era) twice, Long and Jeffery. How can you shift anymore away from offense. Our key offensive signing was DLP. The biggest problem is for some reason there has been no consistency on offense and the defense has been historically bad. Over the last two years, we have allowed, on average, 29 pts a game. Very few offenses in history could overcome that week in and week out. You couple that with some regression on offense and we are a 6-7 win team. What is crazy is we are essentially 1-2 plays away from being 7-4 (Buffalo and Carolina games).
And to think we need to pour more resources into our defense going into next year. I didn't expect us to be good this year or as bad as we are. I thought the offense would continue similar production while the Defense would slightly improve. This team is in a rebuild process and I see this taking two more drafts to fill the cupboards.

If I knew you were the owner I'd likely see things differently.
History says that Bears ownership will keep Trestman around for another season barring a totally disastrous 2nd half of the season.Unfortunately so. If Trestman is on a 1 more year leash, then what D coordinator will accept a job coming into a "lame" season if they decide to make changes? This is why they are they are a circus show, this is why they cannot hire competent established coaches. This happened in Lovie's tenure and continued into Marc's. The only change I see going into next year is promoting Paul Pasqualoni into DC. I had to chuckle when seeing "Chris Harris - Defensive Quality Control" and wonder what his job entails to be in control of quality?
IF Trestman is fired, who do you hire?
in Bearstalk
I see Mike Holmgren has an itch to coach again and will only come back if a huge opportunity arose. With our offensive weapons, I wonder if he can be the Phil Jackson for the Bears. Also try lure Detroit DC Teryl Austin as DC/Asst Head Coach, he worked with Holmgren from 2003-2006. Holmgren can work with Emery on GM duties and Phillips on president duties....because he has done them.
If Emery would like to remain a GM, he should walk into Teddys office and sell him this plan.
