  1. Weird that this popped up with a Walt Aikens search......While we're on Walt Aikens, I really like him as a 4-6 round pick. He's not gonna be a day 1 starter, but if the Bears don't bring back Bowman he'd be a nice replacement.

He could be a decent pick up, was kicked out of UofI for theft, but size and speed are up there with the best.

The Bears were at his pro day and worked him out. His 40 time on the fast track was 4.37 and 4.44, they say to add .05 to get a better idea of his speed. Not bad for a 6-1 205 frame.

  2. lol nice bump, I thought Brian was back. when I typed in nfldraftsite.com I guess it's actually draftsite.com. They have us taking the right guy....Aaron Donald. 14 Chicago logo Chicago Aaron Donald DT Pittsburgh 6' 1" 285 DraftSite's comments: Donald seems to have debunked many of the theories of being too small to play defensive tackle at the next level. Teams like Chicago and Dallas that need penetrating defensive tackles will be all over a player like Donald on draft day.

I did a search to see if anyone has posted on Walt Aikens DB Liberty and it pulled this post up. I thought it was interesting that they had us drafting Kyle Long, when everyone here never thought he'd be a RD1 prospect.

We need to visit nfldraftsite's mock draft to see who the Bears will select since they had that right last February.

  4. I agree, if Hester would want to come back for a little more than the minimum, I would want him back.

Our luck, we let him walk, he signs with Dallas and has a game winning record breaking return and it becomes the highlight reel of the century on espn, nflnetwork, and so on.

  5. I doubt Wootton gets any where close to 2.5mil/yr coming off hip surgery. He has never had a great year and last year playing on our bottom ranked defense did not help him at all. He will get attention from teams because they will see his versatility but will largely be viewed as either backup DE or if signs as a starter, he's keeping a seat warm until they draft their DE.

Wootton had one great play that is worth millions, he ended the career of Brett Favre back in 2010! I think Wootton will sign for a deal closer to 3-4 million a year.

    I figured this:

    Wootton - 3.5 million, Tillman - 4.5 million, Ratliff - 3 million = 11 million

    2.2 million for draft

    2nd tier players: 4-5 million

savings account: 3-5 million (injury settlements - replacement players)

  6. There is no cap situation honestly, that is getting way overblown. I think I detailed and that rather adequately in my mock offseason thread.

As for this thread, you know my response, quantity over quality will only get you so far. At some point we need to make a splash. Given potentially 25M to work with and really only needing to add defensive players I don't even know how you'd spend all that without making one splashy signing.

I think Emery prefers to build through the draft, so signing 2nd tier players on one year deals is what we will most likely see. I think we will try our hardest to resign a few of our own like Tillman, Wootton, and possibly Ratliff. Wootton may get a 4 yr, while the others 2 years. Those 3 alone will eat a good chunk of cap, because they wont play for minimums.

  7. This is likely a no-risk signing or at least very small risk in terms of guaranteed Wouldn't No reason not to do deals like this with players who showed potential. Remember we traded for him right before the season started so he missed all of training camp. A full offseason to learn the offense should help him but I'm not very high on his potential. I expect he will find some competition for his job when he gets to training camp.

Also, if our Oline improves with an offseason of gelling, maybe we can use the TE's more than as a recieving threat instead of an extra blocker. Wouldnt be surprised to see Britton re-signed soon too.

  8. Donald also has a higher vertical (32in vs 29) and broad jump (9 foot 8in vs 8-6).....Dudes a freak. We were talking about how he MIGHT be available in the 2nd, then we were talking about how we should trade down for him, but at this point I honestly wouldn't be shocked if he's not even there at 14. His highlight tape isn't a mirage, he's backed it up today.

  9. Donald continues to look freakish. Just for comparison here, Clowney ran a 4.47, his 10 yard split was 1.56...Donald ran a 4.65 but his 10 yard split was a 1.59. So for his first 10 yards Donald was just .03 slower than Clowney. The 4.65 is tied for 6th among DLmen with everyone ahead of him being DEs. Jernigan ran a 4.93 with a 1.72 10 yard split. Ealy a 4.83/1.66 split, which is real disappointing. Jeffcoat ran a 4.60/160 which is impressive but he's undersized and weak, wouldn't reach for him in the 1st Kareem Martin ran a 4.68/1.53 so he's looked REALLY impressive.. Quicker 10 yard split than Clowney Marcus Smith ran a 4.63/1.57, and he played for the new coach from Clint Hurtt.

I think if we can get Donald RD 1, Martin/Smith RD 2, and the best S RD3 (hopefully Ward) we will be in great shape on the rebuild.

  10. Walterfootball just released the combine measurements for the DL prospects so I figured I'd highlight some of the guys we've talked about. Jadaveon Clowney- 6-5 266 34 1/2 inch arms- I put him up there as sort of a measuring stick. Kony Ealy- 6-4 273 34 1/4- Pretty much right there with Clowney Kareem Martin- 6-6 272 35- The knock on this guy is his speed, he's projected to run a 4.9 while Ealy is expected to be in the 4.7 range. If he beats those projections he could work his way into 1st round consideration Dee Ford- 6-2 252 32 7/8- Short with short arms, further adding to my thought that he's not a 4-3 DE and the Bears won't draft him. Jackson Jeffcoat- 6-3 247 33 7/8- Really thin for a DE, projected to run in the high 4.7s, probably needs to put on 20 pounds if he wants to stay at DE which probably ups his 40 into the 4.8s. Trent Murphy- 6-5 250 33 7/8- Actually worked out with the LBs, at his weight that's probably where he's best suited anyway. Scott Crichton- 6-3 273 32 3/4- Added him since stinger just brought him up in another thread...Shorter than ideal arms...not a fan. Unless Martin comes out and runs in at least the low 4.8s I don't think there's another guy who can be on Ealys level...If the Bears need a DE I really hope Ealy is there. DTs Timmy Jernigan- 6-2 299 31 5/8- Seems like everyone here is split between him and Donald here. Aaron Donald- 6-1 285 32 5/8- A lot of people tab him as too small, but he's just an inch shorter and his arms are an inch longer than Timmy. I'd rather have the guy with the longer arms. Ra'shede Hageman 6-6 310 34 1/4- Thought his arms would be a bit longer. Intriguing length, wouldn't hate the pick but his inconsistency in college worries me a bit. Stephon Tuit- 6-5 304 34 1/2- See above Only went with the guys we've talked about a lot here....here's the whole list http://walterfootball.com/combine2014DL.php Monday is when the DL runs their 40 times and such, would be nice to keep it all in this thread.

Kareem Martin DE helped himself out a lot.

    Clowney: 6'-5" 266 - - 4.47 40 time -- 1.56 10 yd - - 21 bench - - 34-1/2" arm

    Martin:6'-6" 272 - - 4.68 40 time - - 1.53 10 yd - - 22 bench - -35" arm

    Ealy: 6'-4" 273 - - 4.84 40 time - - 1.66 10 yd - - 22 bench - - 34-1/4" arm

    Donald 6'-1" 285 - - 4.65 40 time - - 1.59 10 yd - - 35 bench - -32-5/8" arm

  11. Its not if we draft Mosely, but he may be better at handling the Pros than Bostic was, hard to say, but he is the top rated MLB, if we choose to go that way.Every player has different paths to follow, but I think we need some leadership on our defense whether you think it matters or not.

Nothing wrong with Mosely, but I see the Bears going Dline. Everything I see out of Donald so far shows he has leadership quality, team captain 2012 and 2013 seasons. His relentless play is inspiring, and here's what his coach says about him:

""I think he’s a tremendous example to our young guys about how to approach it and how that translates in the game," Chryst said. "He’s vocal at certain times, but he’s not giving speeches because I don’t think that’s what inspires him. But he’s certainly aware of how he can help the team.”

Chryst also credits Donald for being a leader on and off the field.

“Donald is a good leader. Leadership comes from within your personality. There’s no better way than to have his actions speak," Chryst said. "Not just with his play, and he is playing at a really high level, but also with his preparation, the way he competes in practice, the way he goes about things every day.""

  12. I don't think Archer goes higher than the 4th, I've never even heard of him before today (CBS doesn't even have him listed).....Last year Onterio McCaleb posted the highest 40 time, albeit a bit slower than Archer at 4.34, and he wasn't even drafted. Don't hate the idea of a RB though. Back to the DL.... Donald had the 2nd most bench reps among all DLmen with 35, some scrub had 36. Jernigan had 27. So Jernigan is just an inch taller than Donald, but Donald has longer arms and is stronger. Ealy had 1 more rep than Clowney but both were "underwhelming" with 21 and 22 respectively. Last year the average was 24 for DLmen. Kareem Martin also had 22 reps. Critchton had 24. Michael Sam had as many reps as Jay Cutler had, 17. Jeffcoat had just 1 more than Sam Murphy had 1 more than Jeffcoat. Hageman had 32 which is impressive with those long arms. Dee Ford, who claims he's better than Clowney, didn't participate.

You are starting to steer me back towards wanting Donald. The one certain thing we know is the Bears will run a one gap front and the smaller quicker DT's are better fits, even though Emery has mentioned wanting bigger players. I think Donald brings leadership and a nonstop effort, not sure about Ealy, his media spotlight has been quite. So, ....I'm back to Ealy and Donald as my Rd 1 choices.

  13. I would not be upset over that, I think Mathews might end up being the LT with Bushrod moving over he following year.

What about the Michigan kid. He's the more realistic option of being available. Taylor Lewan has been slotted near 14, been putting up nice results at the combine, and is said to have that nastiness. I'd prefer to go defense, but our big investment is Cutty, so maybe they grab him if he is available.

  14. We keep hearing good stuff about Boggs, and with Kromer being able to develop "low end" talent I wouldn't be surprised if he becomes that guy.

I also believe in Kromers ability to get a rookie to handle a starting role, see Long/Mills, so with the deficiency on the defensive side of the ball I say just go with Garza/Boggs this year then a rookie next year.

Ok, I'll give you that. So no trade and the draft stays the same minus Swanson and McGill. Possible starters Ealy, Ward and Jones in the rotation.

  15. I don't mind the picks, but I doubt Ealy makes it to 19. Also, Miami has as many needs as us (maybe more due to Incognito/Martin), so I can't see them trading up.

I've heard that they may move up if a top OT is available because of Martin/Incognito. Plus they have traded with the Bears in the past...ha! But my first two picks is my Bear prediction.

  16. Meh. If Garza is back I don't think they should go center that early, and if they bring back Boggs I'm not sure they'll go with one at all. I'd also probably just go with one or the other with Desir and McGill, esp if they bring back Tillman like you kinda suggested. CB depth isn't a bad thing, at all, but they'd then have Tillman-Jennings-Frey-Desir-Mcgill-CJ Wilson. All while, depending on what they do in FA, lacking depth on the DL.

I doubt they resign Tillman the way it's looking, could be wrong. If Garza comes back, we need his successor to learn for a year on the bench. Maybe Boggs can be that guy?

  17. Phil Emery's pre combine speech gave a little insight on this draft. He is looking to trade down, he is looking for a young defense, he wants to stop the run, and he wants a defense that can score. He learned his lesson on undersized D-Lineman, he is giving Conte another shot, he wants to resign Garza, Tillman, DJ Williams, and Wootton.

Since Phil is looking to trade down, I found a trade partner with Miami at 19. We acquire 1-19, 3-81, and 5-143, which equals out in the trade value chart.

    1-19 Kony Ealy DE Missouri 6'-5" 275

A lot of updside, has all the tools to develop into a premier DE in the NFL.

2-51 Jimmy Ward SS Northern IL 5'-11" 193

Ward is smart, feisty, and athletic play making safety that shined in senior bowl.

    3-81 Travis Swanson C Arkansas 6'-5" 310

The top available center in the draft should be taken here, Richburg/Swanson

3-82 DaQuan Jones DT Penn St 6'-4" 323

Jones has been one of the top D-linemen in the big10. Great against the run and can pressure the QB.

    4-113 Pierre Desir CB Lindenwood 6'-2" 206 4.56

Little raw at CB yet, but has the size and speed to match big WR's

    5-143 Marqueston Huff FS Wyoming 5'-11" 198

Small program athlete with NFL upside. Fast, tough, could play CB also

    5-144 Keith McGill CB Utah 6'-3" 214

FS that played CB his senior year, struggled to adjust. Size makes him attractive

    6-167 Robert Herron WR Wyoming 5'-9" 193 4.4

Herron performed well in the senior bowl, could be on of the fastest WR's in the draft. Comes in to compete in the slot.

6-175 George Atkinson III RB Notre Dame 6'-1" 220 4.48

Atkinson has nice size and speed to can complement Forte, he can also return. He has break away speed and can take it to the house.

  18. Why be completely silent and now release what you are thinking??? Wouldn't it be better to keep the idea of going 3-4 and what the side of the ball the draft will be most important?? Not that everyone doesn't know we need help on D!! Who knows the game, maybe they go heavy O and switch to the 3-4!!! lol

Emery is also is "selling" that this draft has talent on offense early, which might mean he is hoping to find a suitor to trade down with.

  19. You're right, but in my world, SMC never puts his hand in the dirt. He's the strong side LB in 4-3 formations and OLB in 3-4 formations. I never wanna have to see him with his hand in the dirt again. So again, in my ideal world, even if they bring back Wootton they still need a DE to play opposite of him and stand up in 3-4 formations. I would love for that to be Kony Ealy in the first round.

SCS is right, Shea would stay at LB in a 4-3 also. Hopefully his days with his hand in the dirt are over.

    .

  20. I have to disagree, and it comes down to the same reasoning/thinking along a good oline.

What the line can do is effect time, a good offensive line buys time, a good defensive line steals a QB's time. A good offensive line opens holes for a RB, a good defensive line can collapse a pocket.

Note:I want to read this , not sure what it will say but ran out of time, posted here to find later ;)

For Jason, the link above is a study about success of drafted players. Low and behold, safety has the highest success rate, followed by guards, then centers. GB is the most successful team draft wise since 2000. Rds 2 and 3 produce better than rd1. Kind of an interesting article that I skimmed through.
