Well the Bears' schedule has been released, and we don't play ANY divisional games until the last 9 weeks of the season. That's kind of amazing, because it gives Williams time to grow before he fights for a playoff berth.

I haven't looked at any other teams yet, but maybe the NFL is pushing divisional games later int he year on purpose so playoff hopes stay alive as long as possible for each team, or maybe the Bears just got lucky, or are being helped by the league (less likely!)

Whatever it is, it's good news for us this year.

How many "lucky" coincidences can there be before you question lol.  I mean look, they even drew Jacksonville for their 1st of back to back travel games. If it was Jax 2nd game, they would have the advantage of being acclimated to the travel time adjustment.

You may be on to something.  My experience at Soldier Field has been very negative.  Jackass fans would probably boo Caleb on the first three and out.  I think Bears fans are extremely loyal, but probably the least positive in the league.

I think when the boo birds come out, it is more on the play selections lately. I can't think of a player they would have booed.  I remember Urlacher being upset when fans booed, which was probably poor oline and play calls.

A story from Justin Fields rookie year came out over the weekend.  Andy Dalton was working the white board, trying to help Justin with the offense and looked up and Justin was fixated on his phone.  Evidently Dalton and Foles let him have it, telling him he was on his own.  ESPN 1000

I didn't want to start a jump on Justin thread.  Thought it was interesting though.

I heard this a long time ago but cannot pinpoint when. I didn't know what it was but he didn't listen or take coaching from Dalton well.

That is today's culture though, people look at their phones on average every 6 minutes.  If it was a problem, that is on the Bears for allowing cell phones.

So you think the  Vikings should be the first team? I prefer non division teams for less importance if we might lose. As well as we look like a much better team it may take a few games to get up to speed.

My opinion is no Packers.  The Vikings were mentioned by the Score guys.  Caleb would see a ton of pressure though, so it might not be best to play one if not the top blitzing team if fans got to choose.  My choice, Commanders, Colts, Patriots, Panthers or Seahawks.  Save the Cardinals for a winter treat to warm up.

oops! thanks. I thought he meant the first preseason game. My bad.

Then yes, Caleb should start right from the first game i think. We have to allow him some leeway I think to make mistakes during the first half of the season, but we should see a lot of greatness too, and consistency should come pretty fast and build.

But yeah, with this roster, I'd start him right away. ANd give him all the QB1 snaps in preseason and practice as a result too.

It seems like the Bears intentions are to play Caleb right away based off the roster.  My guess is they bring in a more proven vet if he has any setbacks like an injury or for some reason struggles.  I don't think they have to worry about him struggling though.

As for game 1, I hope the NFL gives him a cushion.  Those opener GB games show how unprepared the Bears are and the loss seems to hurt them from growing.

usually when teams play the HOF game, they either dont play their starters at all, and use it as an opportunity to look at the bottom half of the 80 guys to see who theyre gonna cut, or sometimes in the first preseason game (HOF or no) the starters may play 1 series, 2 at the most. So I dont expect Williams to be out there much if at all. If they put the starters out there for a series, then I guess Caleb will be out there too, but if they dont play any starters, then Williams stays off the field of course without his OL.

I don't see him playing a quarter of football for example, and ditto for all the starters.

I believe the title means what team do you want to play first ( season opener) since the topic today was the release of the NFL schedule.

Seems like many on the radio wanted the Vikings.

oh for sure, but since it's so new, people are going to find loopholes and techniques that we havent thought of yet. Im not really sure how I feel about it yet. If it feels normal, then OK, but if it turns into some weird new thing, Im gonna think its a bad idea.

I can see NFL minds adding more twists to it than the XFL has.  It won't be boring and it should generate shorter fields.  There are even people suggesting the Steelers use Justin Fields as one.

As for the Bears, UDFA Ian Wheeler will have a good chance making the team because of this rule change.  LB Carl Jones also has a window with his athleticism for coverage. They have some decent players against in this crop and a handful will stick at least at the practice squad level.

I'll bet we see a lot of innovation on kickoff returns. the best technique probably hasnt even been thought of yet.

I guess the best way to see it is to watch XFL.  I imagine the Bears identified returners, blockers, coverage and a kicker that can pin point to take advantage of this.

"The ball ideally will drop between the 20-yard line and the goal line, called the "landing zone," where the receiving team will have one or (more likely) two returners. If the ball lands in the end zone or goes out of the end zone, the resulting touchback will be spotted at the 30-yard line. If it's kicked out of bounds, the ball will be placed at the 40.

No one but the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball is caught or hits the ground. That will create an admittedly awkward few seconds when 19 or 20 players are standing still while the ball is in the air"

This is a threat to Tyler Scott, right?   Or is it Velus Jones?

I hope it works out for him!

Teams will most likely use two men deep on KR returns. I would guess it is competition for Homer or if the Bears trade Herbert.

Poles put a team together to review the new Kick Off rules and to review the team to make sure they were ready for it. My guess is Jones and Wheeler/ Scott will be on the field. Plus Wheeler is a sleeper being a small school complete RB.

  10. I am sorry to read this Pix.  You have had a tough run lately that would break many.  You have always had a good heart since the times I first found Bear Talk over 20 years ago and you still do.  I hope the Bears can help bring you joy with this new era beginning.  This site has been my escape even though the team hasn't been exactly how we would like it to be.

this is good criticism. I expect that Booker will be developmental this year as you say. I figure we are going to add another DE, maybe the guy from the Bengals, or maybe someone unexpected at the trade deadline.

I think he will give much more than Robinson, but I don't think it will be Mark Anderson either.  If he accomplishes his assignment of adding the strength and contain, he could turn into a surprise addition year 2 or 3.

  12. 7 hours ago, Stinger226 said:

I seen a podcast that said Booker was 252 lbs at his pro day. he lost weight to try get faster times at the combine. Also seen where his pro comparision was Maxx Crosby. Maxx is 6'5"  256, Booker is 6' 4 1/2" 252.  Crosbys first year he had 10 sacks, that would be nice if we get some millage out of Booker in  his first year.

I have only seen one highlight film on Booker.  IMO, he has a non-stop motor but seems out of control.  He moves the QB with pressure but does it help or hurt because the plays I watched it seemed to get the QB into a safer place to make a play. He needs a lot of work before being an impact and the Bears have a coach I have seen do it (Washington).

I won't expect much from Booker this year but to be asked to add 15# of strength and to learn some space control when pursuing so he doesn't move himself out of his contain area.

I think those are very realistic numbers. If you cant be optimistic this year you dont have it in you to do so. I get next year is the p[rojection, but Poles is going for it now. I was just reading where Yannick stayed in Chicago and was rehabing at Hallas Hall. He didnt perform well last year but got better when Sweat got here. I figure Poles gives him an incentive ladened contract. Like 6 mil and 5 mil as incentives.

With him, Sweat, Booker and Walker it will be higher sack numbers. The DL coach is sup[posed to be a Guru type, who knows how he he make make everyone better.

I can see Yannick back just for the Bears and himself to redeem themselves, but if he resigns this year on a one year and a FA in 2025, he will be a 10 year vet which takes away that higher compensation value if signed else where.  Just for that, they should consider someone younger.  It will come down to the Bears desperation.

My assumption is they bring in a vet for DT and Edge to fill out the rotation for this season, then in the 2025 draft, get a 3T, Edge, and IOL in the first two rounds and a rookie Center by the 4th.

Just said this, we already know before the kick off.

  15. 6 minutes ago, adam said:

They said the draft is defensive heavy next year, which would play right into the Bears hands. Get Offense this year, defense next year, and cook for ages.

As long as they get a long term C in that high mix, maybe 3rd but I'd be good going DE, DT, C/G rounds 1 and 2. Then DE round 3 if it's heavy in talent.

  16. The very early Walter mock draft had the Bears selecting 3 DL.  2 DE/edge and a 3T.   The depth on the top 50 seem to favor our need next year and noticed a lot of size so there is no finding guys that need to add 15#.

There is an article on bearswire.usatoday that lists what they believe are the 20 best remaining free agents the Bears should target after the 2024 NFL draft.

I definitely disagree with many they prioritize. I see no need to worry about WR, TE, or QB now. I am far more concerned with Edge, DT, OC, and OG. The trenches. Here is the list they gave:

    EDGE Yannick Ngakoue
    EDGE Carl Lawson
    EDGE Emmanuel Ogbah
    EDGE Calais Campbell
    EDGE Charles Harris
    EDGE Jerry Hughes
    EDGE Dawuane Smoot

    DT Fletcher Cox
    DT Hassan Ridgeway

    C Connor Williams

    OG Dalton Risner
    OG Mark Glowinski

    WR Tyler Boyd
    WR Hunter Renfrow
    WR Michael Gallup
    WR DJ Chark
    WR Jalen Guyton

    TE Marcedes Lewis
    TE Logan Thomas

    QB Ryan Tannehill

I would okay if they did one year team friendly deals with:

Yannick Ngakoue DE- I'd give him another shot if nothing else. He wouldn't be the main focus with Sweat.

CALIS Campbell DE- solid vet who can set an edge and still be a good rotational player.

Mercedes Lewis TE-another solid vet who enjoyed the team.

Connor Williams C - I'd do longer if the docs feel a full rehab was in process.

He had more punting yards then the Iowa offense had yards last year, lol. He has some unique technique to ensure coffin corner punts pop back to the coverage team and not roll into the end zone. He is top 10 in pretty much every punting category all-time for college football. He led the nation in 2023 in punts, punt yards, and was 3rd in Average.

If he gives the defense an advantage and helps put them into the top 5, it's a smart move and worth considering over the dline.  Now for Flus to tighten his dbs so we get those quick 3 and outs and hand Caleb a short field.

  19. 30 minutes ago, adam said:

They would be awesome if Fields plays that much, but Wilson is not terrible. He would have to have a few bad games in a row before they replace him.

Yeah, it is wishful thinking.  He will probably see maybe 30% of the snaps.  I am sure they will get him in the line up to keep the defenses on their toes.

  20. 2 hours ago, adam said:

In the 2025 draft, with 3 picks in the first two rounds, it seems like DL and OL will be the targets. That would add 3x blue chippers to the trenches.

I am rooting for Jenkins to have a healthy (contract) season and the Bears find a way to keep him, that will help keep the gel and nasty. The 2025 draft will be the icing especially if our needs line up.

He is the clone to Braxton, physical specimen from a small school. Rated higher than Braxton with more upside. If Braxton doesn't keep progressing, we have a replacement in the wings. All the good teams have depth on the OL we are now starting to build that.

Comparing to Jones, his arm length is over 1"  longer, he is stronger and can handle the bull rush.  I don't think we are looking at a starter year one, but a swing OT and possible LG if needed as he gets accustomed to NFL speed.  Jones will have competition, which is good.  I am happy to see Poles make Oline a priority.  I wish he had addressed the C with someone with a higher ceiling than Bates, but I am sure in time it will be addressed.
