Let the level-headed, rational takes commence.

for 2025 6th rounder that becomes a 4th rounder if Fields plays over 51% of snaps (comparable to the Mac Jones trade compensation with a caveat, essentially). So no additional draft compensation for this year. Seems like a deal done to help Fields get some clarity on his future now.

That’s all fair, but I just don’t think it’s a sure enough bet to go for Williams. He has numerous red flags, his teammates apparently didn’t like him,
Where does your impression that his “teammates apparently didn’t like him” come from? Besides one guy who said “we’re a team now” after the bowl win (which can be taken a number of ways) I haven’t seen one indication that his teammates didn’t like him. Just curious on your source there, I’d like to see what they had to say.

Yes, definitely some random Twitter account knows the Bears draft board when not one single Bears move has been leaked this offseason.

I don’t buy that. All the draft pundits change their minds after getting their panties moist during the regular season. By the end of the year they’ll have 3-4 they think are “sure fire starters,” and maybe one that’s a “generational talent.”
That last “bad QB draft” where teams talked themselves into there being starters was 2022 and let’s see how that worked out:
1 (20) Kenny Pickett - Traded
3 (74) Desmond Ridder - Traded
3 (86) Malik Willis - Titans QB3
3 (94) Matt Corral - Birmingham Stallions (UFL)
4 (137) Bailey Zappe - Patriots QB2
5 (144) Sam Howell - Traded -

My opinion on this is, it paints a pretty clear picture that Fields stays as QB.
- Allen counts for $23M against the cap (correct me if wrong)

Guess who's an UFA after 2024?
- Keenan Allen
- Teven Jenkins
- Larry Borom
- Khari Blasingame
- Fields has one more year under rookie numbers before a huge payday
-
After the trade the Bears have FOUR PICKS in the 2024 draft, which doesn't fit Poles' message of building through the draft
- 1.1
- 1.9
- 3.75
- 4.124
Everything above points to a make-or-break year for Fields in 2024, where they'll trade the #1 pick, acquire more than 4 measly picks, load up on talent, likely add starters at OL and WR, then say to Fields, "Time for you to earn your next contract and take us deep into the playoffs."
If Fields fails, then the draft talent is there in 2025 with a year of experience, Keenan Allen's money is off the books, they'll have extra picks from this year's trade, at least the offensive side of the ball is wiped clean, and it'll be time for the inevitably new coaching staff to draft for their future.
The only thing that doesn't fit is that it's looking like a bad year for QBs in the draft next year. Unless you think Dak or Trevor Lawrence are going to be free agents, or someone unexpected balls out in college, what is the solution at QB if Fields isn't it? Draft picks are great, but if no one will trade you a franchise QB, and the draft isn't great at QB, what do you do?

If there’s one thing this offseason proved once and for all, it’s that there is no such thing as a “Bears insider”. With the exception of the Jaylon extension which Poles straight up said he was working on, not a single one of the Bears moves have leaked before it happened. We should all keep that in mind going forward.

Walker is not a bad p!ayer. He just doesn't over pay for players. I think he figures the draft for premium players. One DL in the first round.
I assume the current plan is to trade down from 9 and take whoever’s left of Turner, Verse, Robinson, or Latu.
-
I wish Poles would stop going the cheap/wait and see route for DE, since it has not really worked yet (Muhammad, Walker, Ngakoue).

He will get more picks back, but uses the draft to acquire blue chip players via trades. Sweat- DJ Moore- K Allen.
Chase Claypool, Ryan Bates, N’Keal Harry.

Poles building through the draft (picks he trades away for veterans).
Don’t get me wrong, I like the move, it’s just funny how he preaches building through the draft and yet so many of his moves involve trading draft picks for veterans.

My guess is we will see they signed the Vikings Dlinemen by end of the day. I'm guessing 3yr 30M. I still expect a wideout to sign as well and than I do think they are highly likely to take either a dlinemen or wideout at 9 (or if they move down - they move down but still target BAU but at those positions).
I think I saw Wonnum signed with the Panthers.

At this point, give me Josh Reynolds at WR, DJ Wonnum at DE, and Coleman Shelton at C. Maybe a body at DT.
Biggs saying Bears signing Coleman Shelton, so that’s one down . . .

Calvin Ridley to the Titans 4/$92m. No way we were coming anywhere close to that. Hopefully the adds by the Falcons and Titans at WR push Nabors/Rome down to the Bears.
-
Sounds like the Bears were in on Gabe Davis but backed off the price.

Oh I was thinking more like at #2, or #3 when they trade #1. 😉👍
At this point, that might be the only logical explanation for the Bears’ decision making . . .

MHJ or Odunze in the draft?
Those two and Nabors could be gone by #9. Plus you can’t count on a rookie to be your #2 WR. If they are, great, but you sure can’t count on it. And your current #2 is Equanimous St. Brown or Tyler Scott.
-
Barring a Danielle Hunter signing or something, it’s shaping up to be a pretty underwhelming FA haul for the Bears, IMO. Sounds like it’s the Jags or Pats for Ridley. Really needed a potential #2 WR and upgrade at DE, plus maybe someone to compete at C and maybe we get one of those? Maybe? Things can change, but I’m not thrilled.
-
It’s early, but I’m not thrilled that the Packers and Vikings are both making bigger upgrades than the Bears so far:
Vikings - Greenard, Van Ginkel
Packers - Jacobs, McKinney
Really need to close the deal with Danielle Hunter, IMO.

I think they just view it as - Herbert is okay - but probably not a starter. Johnson is just entering year 2 and he was okay. He could end up being good, but he could also just be meh. Swift has been low usage and is in his prime and definitely has some game.
Yep, I get it. Just worried that this is Miles Sanders 2.0 (Eagles RB looks great behind their O-line, then signs elsewhere for big $ and does nothing).
-
Signed at 3/$24m. Not sure why is your priority with Herbert and Johnson, but fine.
-
Feels like we’re going to look back at a saturated safety market and someone is going to sign at a discount rate later in FA we might wish we’d signed over Byard, but if they liked the guy and the fit, then I can’t fault the move (and maybe you can still sign that guy later too?).

IDK, Morse is five years older than Bates (32 vs 27) and has a greater cap hit (8.5M vs 5M). I wouldn't be surprised if Poles knew Morse was going to be available when he traded for Bates.
Maybe, but on the flip side maybe Bates would have just been released as well.
-
Seems like not a great look for Poles that the Bills got a 5th round pick from the Bears for their back-up C and then straight up released their starting C . .
Fields traded to Steelers (for real)

I don’t know, I feel like even without a trade down, Poles could pretty effectively address the current holes in the roster in the draft. The holes, as I see them, are QB, DE, WR3, and G/C depth. So you could just go:
1a. QB
1b. DE
3. WR (should be some good guys still available in this class: Wilson, Burton, Legette, Walker, even Brenden Rice who would be nice to pair with Caleb)
4. C (can still get a decent developmental C here like Nourzad, Limmer, maybe Van Pran)
Feels like the roster is in pretty good shape after that.
