  1. It kind of does matter since he was a LT coming out of college. He played there for four straight years.

To him, RT may as well have been RG. Sure, RT is more closely related to LT than RG is, but ultimately blocking is blocking. He should have been put at LT to begin with.

You don't think he was given a shot at LT in training camp and the Bears just did exactly what the Mayock quote I posted said?

  2. QFT.

Tice and the coaching staff completely screwed Williams, and thus far Carimi has been tossed around like a $2 hooker.

If a player was a stud in college at position X, draft him to play position X. It's not that difficult. As I've said before, going into training camp next year, the LT job should be Carimi's by default, and to lose the job he'd have to be atrocious. If he's just plain bad or subpar, no problem because that's about the same as Webb. May as well try to invest time and reps into your LT of the future instead of trying the Webb experiment for the fourth(?) straight year. While we're at it, let's move Garza back to his actual position of OG, and sign/draft a Center. Enough of this flip-flop garbage.

That's a pretty sketchy move in my opinion but it could work. Problem is if it fails then we're stuck with another garbage line for a year and could end up in the same situation we are this year, next year (Needing that franchise LT while, speculating where Carimi plays).

    From Mike Mayok

"I think he’s the kind of guy ... you try ... at left tackle, and if he can’t handle the speed out there, you’ve got an all-pro right tackle."

So it's not outlandish to move him from LT to RT...Though I can agree he's never been given a shot at LT.

Oh I don't think you'll find a person outside of Mike Tice who wants to see the 4th year of the Webb experiment...We all want a proven guy their, and this is the year to get one.

  3. We have to resign Scott, he is not under contract. So we need to sign him, Actually Beatty is rated lower than Webb on one site I looked at and think we can do better. I think we should go after Bushrod/NO which will be more money but not Jake Long money. Then we need to sign a LG in FAgency, trusting a rookie to be consistent quality might be asking to much.

Funny you should say that as the site I was looking at PFF, which is the site Emery uses, has Bushrod as the 8th worst in pass block efficiency whereas Beatty ranked 11th best.....I don't pay for PFF so the stats I'm looking at are only through the first half of the season but it's hard to believe the flip flopped that much.

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/...ensive-tackles/

I just figured Scott would be back after reading a previous poster say Scott will be the starting RT.

  4. Gabe lost his job prior to being hurt this yr. Considering he even said he's never played G before this yr i have hard time seeing him sticking at LG. Which would mean another failed #1 pick in angelo era

Pretty sure he looked A LOT better at RG over RT though so whether he played there before is not an issue.

Here are the options for Gabe as I see them. (I'll just use Beatty because he's who I want)

Option 1- Play Gabe at RT where he sucked and hope he was indeed playing hurt.

    - Carimi/Louis/Garza/?/Beatty

Option 2- Play Gabe at RG and not resign Louis who has been the best OLman the Bears have had.

    -Scott/Carimi/Garza/?/Beatty

Option 3- Move Lance Louis to LG or RT while playing Gabe at RG.

    -Louis/Carimi/Garza/?/Beatty or ?/Carimi/Garza/Louis/Beatty

Option 4- Move Gabe Carimi to LG

    -?/Louis/Garza/Carimi/Beatty

Which would you all like to see?

I'd personally like to have the option of 1 or 4. Meaning a training camp battle like I've been calling for.

  5. I understand where ur coming from. Personally i don't think Chris Williams was ever given a real chance. He was at LT then got hurt. When he came back he was LG then bounced around from there. We cant expect rookies to be great from day 1 and if hes not start moving them all around. This hardly ever works in general. If we draft a LG let's have him play there. More than anything we need continuity on the oline but when we continue to bounce everyone around we will never get that. I know it has really killed us last couple yrs with injuries up and down the line. Im not making excuses for any of the OL. Just saying in general of course.

The problem with continuity from this year to next is this years line obviously sucked. IMO the only guys who should be given their old spots back are Garza and Louis, and Louis played where Carimi ended up at. A top tier LT needs to brought in and the other 2 spots are to be earned. If Carimi really was hurt he should have no problem capturing his RT spot back, if someone else earns it over him and they wanna try Gabe at LG and he excels then thats fantastic and I don't see the problem.

  6. Moving carimi to LG? This is a proble. He was drafted as a RT. Its 1 thing to move him to RG as he plays nxt to him and should know his assignments but moving him to opposite side now and changing schemes on top of it. What we need to do is stop bouncing guys all around it only stunts growth. I've got an idea. I want Barrett Jones a C for example lets let him play C i know im crazy for thinking this. Its OK lol

When we drafted him weren't we all wanting him to be moved to LT? (If of course he lived up to his 1st round potential.)

If they bring back Louis he deserves a spot, and that should be where he's been, RG. Scott was supposedly solid at RT, but his ratings show otherwise, so I dont know what to think about him and would be open to Carimi there....If Scott was good there and you don't wanna move anyone around then you say good bye to Louis. It's too early to outright bench Gabe and he's being moved around because he hasnt found a home yet.

If I were the coach I'd let Gabe, Webb, Brown, Scott and the draft pick battle it out for RT and LG...Disregard prior positions, may the best men win

  7. I like most of what you said BUT we wont be changing to the 3-4, it will take to many personal changes to make that work. Emery said the new guy will be working with the talent we have on defense. Beatty would be ok, but a 2nd rounderLG making an impact is slim at best. I think we need to just go out and two proven OL, no matter who there are and fix it now instead of a work in progress. Im telling you here Cutler wont last if he keeps taking hits as he has.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Honestly the addition of Beatty or any top tier LT and the return of Louis sets the line up pretty good.

I can't find individual OL stats but someone here said Scott looked good at RT....So then you have Carimi, Brown, Webb, and the 2nd round rookie battling over the LG spot. I personally wanna give Carimi one more shot to see if he can hang at guard. Lining him up next to a proven top tier LT could be a good thing for him.

As far as the 3-4 goes, if you're like me and think Paea can play NT (Ridiculous strong, can gain weight) and Melton can play DE (Has a knack, speed, and power for getting to the QB) I don't see that big of a personnel change needed. Plus I believe it optimizes the value of SMC who moves to the OLB spot.

  8. Ok why are ppl so enamoured with ogletree. He's got major red flags. He's never played an entire yr. Losing time to injuries and 2 different suspensions. 1 was for drugs. I want someone more reliable with our 1st pick. So why so high on him. What makes u think hes so reliable

    Because he's a 1st round talent and past the 3 I mentioned it's slim pick'ns.

Draft experts don't seem to mind either.

If they think they can get Minter in the 2nd and grab an OL in the first I'd be all for that, there are some drafts where I see Minter going in the first tho and with how deep the draft is on OLmen I'd prefer a ILB in the first.

  9. Sign Sullivan, Trestman, or Arian as the HC

Bring in a DC who runs a 3-4

    Re-sign- Melton, Louis, and Roach.

Sign- Will Beatty....If you have restructure some contracts, go for it.

    Draft...

Ogletree, Minter, or if for whatever reason he falls Te'o in the first..I see Minter going in in the 1st in a couple mocks

Best available OL in the 2nd, supposedly this is a deep draft for OL..It's not for ILB,

Then the biggest and baddest DT in the 4th...I still think Paea can play NT but a backup will be needed

Then grab a Speed WR, a big TE, and a CB in the 5th 6th and 7th.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The OL battles it out for RT, and LG with Louis, Garza, and Beatty being sure things at RG/C/LT.

That leaves Scott, Rookie, Brown, Webb, and Carimi for those last 2 spots. 2 of them are bound to catch on.

The LB core in this 3-4 would be Briggs-Minter-Roach-SMC...I think thats pretty sexy.

The DL would be Pep-Paea-Melton. I know it's up for debate whether Paea can be a NT and if Melton can play DE but in my mind there's no question.

Utilize Rodriguez more as a hybrid TE.

    Win a title.

  10. Its been quite a while outside of major football for him. I'd think at some point he'd realize his best shot is coming back to the NFL. I saw an article on soxtalk (I'm guessing maybe you posted it) and the article was talking about him as a head coach but was dated back in 09. He's been out of this league for a while. To hire him as a HC would be a joke in my mind. That isn't to say he doesn't have qualifications but after not interviewing some of the better proven candidates to then pull this out of your ass would just disgust me.

I'm going to be irritated if we don't interview Shanny. I want McCoy, Shanny or Sullivan if we are going for a coordinator.

Ya that was me...The more i read about him, the more i like him, if you read the latest article I posted on him he learned to coach from Papa Shanny, Holmgren, and Bill Walsh...What a group to learn from right?

  11.

Pretty darn good OC as well. That said, I hope they are looking at him more as a lets get to know you because we think whomever our HC is might want to hire your as the OC.

From what I've read it doesn't sound like he'll take just an OC job...2006 Sean Payton wanted to bring him in as his OC and he passed to take a HC job at NC State...then he went to Canada.

His mind could have changed but it seems like its HC or bust for him.

  12. Ya just one look at his wiki page leads me to believe he could be a good hire.

As Brian said he worked with Cutler before the draft (Along with other top QB prospects, he's well respected in this regard)

He's got a book out called "PERSEVERANCE: Life Lessons on Leadership and Teamwork"

He hes good success as an NFL OC....People wanna throw out the "Chucky made Rich Gannon an MVP" well Trestman was his OC.

  13. I got my money on Sullivan. Not that I think wonders need to be worked on Cutler but he turned Eli into a superstar and turned Tampa's 21st ranked O into a top 10 O.

Oh and you want a strong presence? How about a former Army Ranger and a blue belt in BJJ.

  14. They may very well be able to do both...particularly if they restructure a few other people...but if that's the case, that'll be about the end of the Bears offseason other than the draft. They're not going to be bringing in an all pro TE along with those 2, and they may find themselves unable to add additional depth along the O-line beyond the draft.

That all sounds gravy to me. An all pro TE isn't needed, I'll take a 4th round TE and Evan Rodriguez. If they add Long and draft an O-lineman in the first or 2nd they won't really need that much more depth beyond just that.

  15. How are we viewing James Brown on this board now. I remember being on here last off season and there was a lot of talk on him.

I didn't even notice he started 3 games this year, which i guess is a good thing.

I've read some reports that he's looked alright but would be better suited on the outside or inside a zone blocking scheme.

Could he get a spot somewhere on the line? Anywhere but LT, I want a proven guy there.

  16. I wouldn't call it a rebuilding at all. What I can see is the polar shift all the scientists we're predicting for 2013. :P

And by that I mean the Bears turn into a more offensive orientated team. The defense will still be there but I see more emphasis on the offensive side of the ball....And really all that means is a few new OL, a TE and maybe a speed receiver who can actually catch the ball. That might all spell the end of Urlacher and possibly Peppers but with the potential on offense I'm ok with that.

No way they go into a total rebuild when they're so damn close to being title contenders.

  17. per rotoworld...

The Palm Beach Post says the franchise tag "seems out of the question" for Dolphins impending unrestricted free agent LT Jake Long.

but then per Dan Pompei via rotoworld...

Dan Pompei of the Chicago Tribune does not believe the Bears will go after impending free agent LT Jake Long.

It's very difficult to project the market for a formerly elite player who appears to be in his decline phase at age 27. Pompei suggests that Long will command "somewhere in the vicinity of $11 million a year, and a monster signing bonus." The Bears are desperate for help keeping Jay Cutler upright, but they don't have the cap space for that.

That certainly conflicts with the subtitle of the thread.

  18. Melton could not play DE in a 3-4.

Assuming we are able to resign him, where would he play in a 3-4?

I do not want to see us rebuilding the entire defense for the next 2-3 years. I want success this year! I think that is what Emery was also getting at when he suggested it would not be his first choice of moves to make.

What makes you think that? I know it's not ridiculous to think that nor do I think it's ridiculous to think he can be a fit there. I'm actually kinda surprised he's not already used there occasionally. The guys a former RB at Texas so he's got some wheels on him.

In a 3-4 you want a big DE and I think Melton could be just that

Edit- I guess the answer to my question would probably be his height right?

  19. He said he wasn't opposed, but it would take convincing. He said they ran a true 3-4 in KC, and that takes a big NT and two big DEs that we don't have. Now there are hybrids that may work but with our current roster transforming to a true 3-4 would not make much sense unless the potential coach has a great transformation plan.

I think a Peppers-Paea-Melton line could work in s 3-4. Paea is not THAT big but he's got incredible strength and can pack on some more pounds.

I'm not advocating it but I think it'd work.

  20. Exactly. He is one of the 6 I mentioned- Bushrod, Long, Clady, Beatty, Albert, and Vollmer. If they don't sign one of those, I'd be highly disappointed. Consider that guys like Lewan, Fisher, Fluker, Aboushi, etc will be in the draft, they need 1/6 UFA's and 1 OT in the draft.

Furthermore, if you don't check that list I linked up. 5 of the 6 guys you mentioned are in the top 15 of the most efficient pass blockers in the NFL.

    Clady #2

Albert and Long tied @ #5

    Beatty #11

    Vollmer #12

Getting any of those guys will make me a happy panda, and this team so much better.

  21. I didn't hear PFF. I heard Stats Inc.

    Regardless, no way Clady leaves.

i could be wrong about the PFF mention, I haven't seen or heard the conference but I could have sworn someone mentioned him "giving a shout out to pff"

But ya, I agree no chance Clady leaves, Long has got to be #1 on the Bears list. If they really have the money to "do whatever they want" he's the guy I want.

EDIT- Ya Bowling mentioned his "shout out" to PFF.

  22. No particular rumor, but another LT who stands a good chance of becoming a free agent this year is Saints LT Jermon Bushrod. The Saints are almost $20 million over the cap, Bushrod will be unrestricted, and the Franchise tag for OL is supposed to be just under $10 million.

It's funny that Emery brought up Pff in his press conference and in looking for the top OTs in the game I found this from pff

    https://www.profootballfocus.com/blog/2012/...ensive-tackles/

Which has Jermon Bushrod as having the 8th worst pass block efficiency.

So he doesn't sound like a guy Emery would target.

Ryan Clady ranked 2nd and Jake Long ranked 7th , in what was considered a down year for him, if one of those guys are available, they gotta be the #1 target.

  23. That's only because of how bad Hester was. Knox 1-2 steps slower isn't that great of a WR. The thing that made him a threat was that he could outrun people to get open deep.

Balta I know youre over on the soxtalk board but I'll post this over here for those that aren't

There's a well respected trainer or doctor or something along those lines that posts over on soxtalk, I asked him about the Knox injury and this was his response.

After a spinal fusion, speed will not be an issue. It will not effect his physical abilities at all. It's going to be a confidence issue with getting hit and twisted around. A fracture in the vertebrae with no residual neurologic effects it not a big issue. The only way it will effect his physical performance is if there are continued neurologic effects.

So losing a step or 2 shouldn't be an issue.
