Pass Rush

Featured Replies

By actions of the Bear's brass, they are going to go with current assets as far as adding to the pass rush. DA, to my understanding, does a lot of stunts and blitz's. As we all know the sacks come from the DTs, LBers, and DBs, and with the added speed, I can see a lot more from the back seven

. As much as Dexter was bad against the run he was 9th in sacks as a DT. He was 19th out of 134 in pressures.

Grady Jarrett is on his last legs and was hurt most of the year. He appeared to play better towards the end of the year. He had 21 pressures and 3 sacks. If healthy, maybe he can get a few more sacks. Another DT that was bad against the run.

K Street had 2 sacks and 6 pressures in limited snaps (109) pass rush . Not sure you could expect much out of him.

James Lynch had 1 sack and 10 pressures in 179 pass rush snaps. Not sure he stays on the 53 man roster.

Neville Gallimore had 4 sacks (25th out of 134) and 17 pressures in 279 snaps. He is the one addition that could add to the pass rush.

Jordan van der Berg had 3 sacks and 29 pressures in 291 pass rush snaps. Hard to say what you get from a rookie but he has the upside to make a contribution.

Dayo got injured but did nothing to encourage his ability to add the pass rush. In 2024 he had 3 sacks and 19 pressures. Not sure if moving him inside can boost his numbers but I am skeptical.

Montez Sweat had 11 sacks (13th out of 115) and 54 pressures (19th) He is not a top ED in the NFL but at the top of the 2nd tier. He has the 16th highest paid, probably close to his value.

Austin Booker had 5 sacks and 29 pressures. By the numbers he had 2 more sacks taken away due to penalty. In 8 games, I can see him reaching dd sacks this year.

Shemar Turner being injured only having 34 pass rush snaps its hard to grade him. In 2023 he had 6 sacks in college. Not sure what to expect but he does have some upside. 6'3" 293 33.5 arms and 4.8 40 time. He has the length and relentless energy that the bears look for. A nasty attitude.

Jonathan Garvin In college 2018 he had 60 Ts, 5.5 sacks, 17 TFL, 2 FF, 5 PDs. Doubt he ever makes the roster. 4.82 40 with 36" V and 125" BJ.

Jamree Kromah has 4.77 40 had 10 sacks, 59 Ts and 17.5 TFL at a small school college. Probably will never be a rostered ED

Jeremiah Martin 4.9 40 college year 41 Ts, 11 TFL and 8.5 sacks, Probably nothing

Daniel Hardy 4.64 40 college year small school had 66 Ts, 24 TFL, 16.5 sacks. He is a great ST player , maybe he can add something to the pass rush

Summary;

I looked at this to boost my optimism that we might have some rostered players that could give us some pass rush, but it was kind of depressing. Its Sweat-Booker-Dexter with some upside with Turner . Maybe van der Berg could surprise but this doesnt have a good look to it. Go get Cam Jordan.

Now I do think DAs scheme with more speed could boost the pass rush with the back 7 and faster DTs but this was kind of depressing.

Seattle won the SB last year with the 6th best sack team in the league. Also NE made the SB with the same number of sacks we had. (35)

4 of the top 6 sack leaders didnt make the playoffs Atl-Minn-Browns-Lions

Playoff teams 2025: top 10 in sacks Denver-Rams-Seattle-Chargers-Eagles-Texans-Steelers

other teams Bears-49ers-NE-GB-Panthers-Bills-Jaguars

Seahawks leading sackers L. Williams/7- B Murphy/7-U Nwosu/7-D Lawerence/6 - D Thomas/3.5 They run a 4-3 and 3 are LBers, I DE and 1 DT.

Anyone can post stats to try to make a point and that's what this is. As much as pass rush defense is important, its not the end all to making it to a SB, Seattle shows its a consensus of pass rushers and not one top player. A lot with Seahawks success was scheme with speed and athletics players. I think we are building the defense in the same manner. Our top 5 sack leaders Sweat/11-Dexter/6- Booker/4.5 (6.5)-C J Gardner/3 -Jarrett/1.5-

I dont think we are as far away from being a decent pass rush team

I keep looking at pass rush info and seeing if other paid pass rushers are below expectations.

Sweat is paid the 16th highest contract. 7 players paid more had less sacks. Crosby and Sweat both had 10. The problem with paying high contracts, most dont live up to the money. Having several 6-7 sack players like Seattle is probably the best way to build this defense.

Out of the top 15 free agents only Cam Jordan/10.5--, Von Miller/9-- and Clowney /8.5 were even close to 10. 6.1 mil, 6 mil, 3.5 il respectfully. Go out and get Cam Jordan, the best run and pass rush DE available.
