If the Bears HADN'T traded for Jay Cutler, and you now have 20/20 hindsight, what would you have done with the draft picks?

Featured Replies

I'll put in my 2 cents later, after considerable research, but I'm wondering what everyone else would do.

I'm not talking about picking out all the guys who have excelled this year and shoving them into the Bears lineup. I'm talking about going with the glaring holes the Bears have, and picking the guys in the most logical order. Keep the original picks that the Bears had to give up in order to trade for Cutler, and I wonder how many holes could be filled.

Responded in another thread before I saw you created this one.

1st pick for me would have been a no brainer. I would have taken Michael Oher, who I was very high on. He has looked awesome thus far, and, has played both RT and LT. At RT, he was in the top tier for ROY honors, but even w/ the injury related move to LT, has still done very well.

2nd pick - I would have been torn between Levitre and Loadholt. While Loadholt has been playing well at OT, I think he could have moved inside to OG and done well too. I likely would have gone w/ Loadholt over Levitre, but one of these two would have been my pick.

3rd pick - If we are talking about who I would have picked, it would have been Iglesias, who I was very high on, and who I still believe could develop into a very good WR.

4th pick - Sidbury. I loved his explosion off the edge, and thought he would be a dang good pass rushing DE for us.

5th pick - Duke Robinson. Frankly, I forgot he fell this far, and may have taken him sooner, but if not, no way I pass on him here.

forget keeping original picks for cutler, it was a steal.

now, instead of us trading out of our second round pick i would have chosen max unger - center/guard. but instead as usual we trade quality for quantity with angie.

I am not going to speculate on who to take but I will tell you that I was very upset that we didn't take Duke Robinson.

Honestly, trading down wasn't the end of the world for me. There were some good looking OL available in the 2nd. As you mention, Unger, as well as Loadhold and Levitre. I get trading down though. What I just do not get is having two 3rds, two 4ths and two 5ths, and drafting ZERO OL.

To be fair, it isn't like he quickly won a starting job, but I just never understood the reason for his free fall in the draft.

Oh yea, and whether anyone wants to call it hindsight or not, the nearest pick in which we passed on him was used on a player who did not make it out of camp (Marcus Freeman).

because by the 3rd on down the premium players were already picked!! this again goes to angelo's quantity over quality. unger was projected the best center in the draft and a very good prospect at guard.

hmmm.... we have a dinosaur for a center (with beekman projected to step in but he had proved nothing after starting last season at guard). we have NO guards that are more than even average. QUALITY is the pick with unger, who dropped out of the lower 1st round to US, not just warm tackling dummies for camp.

that pick would have given us multiple possibilities on the OL. if beekman sucks at center we have a great prospect in unger. if beekman plays well we have a great prospect at guard who can start and a backup center for beekman. a win win situation.

I see that I don't have to reply. I would have done cartwheels with this draft, even though I don't know who Sidbury is. And I can guaran-damn-tee that two of those guys would be starting for the Bears on the OL right now...if not three.

Really? You think this staff would allow for a good personnell decision that wasn't foreced upon them via injury, etc ?

1 Percy Harvin, WR, Florida (now with Vikings)

2 Phil Loadholt, RT, Oklahoma (now with Vikings)

3 Jerraud Powers, CB, Auburn (now with Colts)

4 Louis Murphy, WR, Florida (now with Raiders)

5 Tom Brandstater, QB, Fresno State (now with Broncos)

6 Al Afalava, S, Oregon State (with us)

7 Sammie Stroughter, WR, Oregon State (now with Tampa Bay)

Keep in mind, a deep threat like Knox wouldn't be working out this well with Orton, so definite guys like Harvin and Murphy would be great with Hester and Bennett. Also, Loadholt has been stellar and so has Powers. I can't complain with Afalava. Brandstater is a nice QB prospect.

So you'd get three WRs? Still? Even though Hester and Bennett have done very well?

And only one guy for the OL? Are you serious?

Lol, here's how I probably would have drafted. Not saying it was good or all the guys woulda turned out, but looking at the draft with the original picks.

Round 1= Michael Oher Tackle

Round 2= Duke Robinson Guard (I know he fell really far, but wouldn't have known that before the draft)

Round 3= Rashad Johnson Safety

Round 3= Juaquin Iglesias WR

Round 4=Tony Fiametta FB

round 5= Fenuki Tupou Tackle

Round 6= Blake Schlueter Center

Round 7= Graham Harrell QB

Round 7= Lance Louis )

Round 7= Derek Kinder WR

So you'd get three WRs? Still? Even though Hester and Bennett have done very well?

Clearly, I've always been with you on getting younger and better on the OL, but I'd like to see Williams get a shot at LT before I stick him on the bench and instead draft a 4th-6th round LT who chances are that he'll never amount to jack in the NFL.

Omiyale does suck, but he's never been a starter in the NFL yet alone a RG. He's a RT and he always has been. He has no reason to suck total a** like he does, but cut him a bit of slack.

Insert Beekman there, Williams at LT, and Loadholt at RT, and our OL suddenly has become younger AND better.
