Food for thought-great choice?

Here is some information out there about our pick.

I have read where NE and Packers would have taken him with picks. Good draft company

Players in the top 13 sackers in the league last year, playing DE

Allen/6-6 270/Idaho State

Babin/6-3 267/Western Michigan

Long/6-3 270/Virg

Avril/6-3 260/Pru

C. Clemons/6-3 254/Geo

T. Cole/6-3 270/Cinn

Our pick has similar size with some of the best pass rushers in the league last year. Some are from not major schools.

DEs similar in the draft

Ingram- play either DE or OLB I think the Bears may have him rated higher, but he wasnt there when we picked.

Meculis- play either DE or OLB Almost identical is size and speed. Knock on him, doesnt seem to have the feel for the game to be a every down player.

Jones- play either DE or OLB Is an 1and 1/2 inches taller. Coming off a major injury, stuggles to change direction, doesnt have a bust off the ball.

Irvin- can play either spot 15 lbls smaller, only DE prospect faster than McCellin, raw in pass rush tech, probably take a couple of years to develope

Upshaw can play either spot similar in size

Perry can play eitherspot similar in size, same speed as McCellin, pass rush tech. are limited.

What it amounts to, he is similar to all the DE types that we were comtemptiing taking at that spot.

His positives- high motor-durability-football instincts.

negitives- a tweener type(as all the rest we looked at), not very stong, a little light.

Conclusion I think he can get stonger going forward and add 5 to 10 lbs. which makes him in the ballpark with all that was drafted and some of the better pass rushers in the league right now. Every draftee is considered a tweener that I listed. Production, was moved all over the field and was not used as a primer pass rusher all the time. 16.5 sacks in two years. Had 3 inters, 2 forced fumbles, I blocked kick. So he has big play ability.

He had 2.5 sacks playing head to head with C. Glenn, Geo, considered one of the better line prospects.

It only matters how he plays not what my opinion of him was going in. After reading more about him and Mayock had his listed as the 14th best player in the draft, I am more on board with the pick, but Bears for ever 34 thinks he is a 5th rounder, so I am guess I should dislike the pick. Oh and he is white.

I'm glad you brought up allen. Some are bagging on his school and weak schedule. What they are forgetting about is that just last year he played all over the field and his team smacked georgia in the mouth.

Living in the intermountain west I saw a lot of boise state games. Not a huge fan of the school but my take away after watching him play is that he is a football player. Situational stats are great and combine numbers are too. But I care more about the fact that his coach valued entrusted him with so many different positions and responsibilities on the field. One of the things that Lovie preaches is swarming to the ball. He does that.

Brought this to the forefront to help people see facts they dont normally use for their arguments.

IMHO is the guys you are looking at has played (started) 3 years at the position for his school, has a high motor, doesn't take off plays, has all the tools , skill set as other high rated players and you need him at a certain position then you take him.....period. Guys like Walter Payton, Jerry Rice etc.........that came from small not big name schools. If the guys wants to play and can, then pick him train him and turn him loose on the other team!!
