  2. LAKE FOREST, Ill. – When the Bears conduct the first of their 14 OTA workouts today at Halas Hall, one of their promising young players will line up at a new position.

After playing cornerback during his first two NFL seasons in Chicago, Corey Graham will work at free safety. The 6-foot, 193-pounder lined up at the new position in workouts Monday and Tuesday.

The Bears are making the move in an effort to get their best defensive backs on the field at the same time. They’re deep at cornerback with fourth-round pick D.J. Moore joining veterans Charles Tillman, Nate Vasher and Trumaine McBride, and feel that Graham possesses the ideal traits to excel at free safety.

“He’s a good tackler and he has good ball skills,” said coach Lovie Smith. “He’s a smart player. Last year he played corner for us and he started a game at nickel when Danieal [Manning] was down. That’s the type of athlete you’re looking for at that position.”

Graham likely will work with the second-team defense behind Craig Steltz in OTAs, but the depth chart at this point of the year is meaningless. Steltz also could challenge Kevin Payne for the starting job at strong safety. Free-agent acquisition Josh Bullocks, who played free safety with the New Orleans Saints, is expected to work at strong safety in OTAs.

Graham will give the Bears defensive flexibility, enabling the unit to incorporate the free safety into its man coverage at times like it did when Manning played the position.

Graham joined the Bears in 2007 as a fifth-round draft pick from New Hampshire, where he played both cornerback and free safety. He ranked second on the team with 20 special-teams tackles as a rookie.

Last season he appeared in 16 games with nine starts, ranking fifth on the defense with 93 tackles while adding one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Graham started the final five games at right cornerback after Vasher was placed on injured reserve with a wrist injury.

  3. After thinking about our team as a whole, it's essentially a giant question mark. It's really interesting because there are question marks at literally every position. We have such huge potential with this team, but they need to pull it together. How weird is it that the only really solidified positions are QB, P, K, and maybe RB.

QB: Cutler, you know what you're going to get, but can he continue to get better with this group of receivers?

RB: Will Forte continue to grow or will he regress in his sophomore year? Could he be our franchise guy for a long time? And who the hell is going to back him up?

FB: Will McKie actually do anything? Will Gaines take over?

WR: The biggest question mark of them all. Can Hester learn the playbook for good and improve his catching abilities? Can Bennett learn the playbook and break out with a familiar QB? How long until Rashied Davis is purely a special teamer? Can any of the rookies step up and become a reliable receiver? Will we bring in a veteran like Toomer or Harrison to solidify the position? Plaxico?

TE: Will Olsen take the next step to becoming a perennial Pro Bowler? Can he improve his blocking? How much more does Dez Clark have left in the tank? Can we expect anything out of Gaines or Davis?

OL: Can Pace finish his career strong? How much does he have left? What will happen between Garza/Omilaye/Shaffer/Beekman/Buenning? Can Williams recover from the injuries and prove his worth as a 1st rounder?

    ---

DL: Can Rod Marinelli work some magic on these guys? We have a plethora of athletic lineman, but it seems that none of them played well last year outside of Alex Brown? Can Ogunleye show up and be a force on the end in his contract year? Can Anderson show those crazy rushing abilities from his rookie year? Can Tommie Harris stay healthy? Will Idonije play inside or outside? What can we expect out of the rookie Jarron Gilbert? Will Adams and Harrison continue good play as backup DT?

LB: Briggs seems to be a sure thing if he stays healthy but can Urlacher rebound from a tough season? Will Roach or Hillenmeyer step up and take the outside role? Can Freeman show anything as a rookie? Do we bring in Tinoisamoa for competition?

CB: Absolutely nothing is set in the secondary. We have tons of talent but they need to put it together. Can Tillman rebound and be that shut-down CB on the bigger receivers? Can Vasher stay healthy and be a Pro Bowler again? What can we expect from Danieal Manning? Is he a CB or safety? Ditto Graham. Ditto Bowman. Can Moore come in as a rookie and be a solid nickel back or more? Can we expect anything from McBride?

S: A clusterfuck of guys who seems to all be SS. Bullocks, Steltz, Payne, Afalava. I like Payne at SS but who can step up and be the FS? Will one of Graham, Bowman, Manning, Steltz or Bullocks be that guy?

    P: Brad Maynard. 'Nuff said.

    K: Robbie Gould. 'Nuff said.

I love the potential that this team has, especially at the CB position. There is so much talent there that if healthy, we could have a MUCH improved secondary. With Tillman, Vasher, Graham, Moore, Bowman, McBride, and Manning, we have depth and talent. The WR position is obviously also a toss-up but I'm very excited about Iglesias and Bennett. If things work out well, we could have a really REALLY good team.

  4. This is pretty ridiculous to speculate an entire year in advance. Though it's funny you have us at 64...meaning we won the Super Bowl. With that said, I freaking love Major Wright. If we are able to get him next year, that'd be incredible.

  5. According to the Sun Times, we only offered our 2nd rounder and nothing else because a contract extension was a big issue to Angelo which brought his value down. I agree to an extent as offering a huge deal to a guy with injury issues is never a good idea, but this team was desperate for WR help. I certainly hope the lines stay open.

  6. People complaining about D-Linemen need to realize that we had NO pressure on the quarterback last season. Anderson regressed, Ogunleye is getting older, Brown had a great season but how much longer will he be a big factor, Harris has injury issues, and between Adams and Harrison, we weren't really blowing anyone away.

I REALLY wanted Maiava there but he went to CLE the pick before us.

  7. If it's anything more than our 2nd Rd pick I'll pass and I'm not even that high on giving that up. Boldin's antics last year during a Superbowl run were childish. On top of that I don't like his BS attitude toward his contract situation given that the Cards gave him a new deal after just two seasons and then he threw them under the bus for it. Of course that puts him in the same club as guys like Urlacher. If his contract demand was in the $7-8mil/yr range I'd be more interested but not at $9mil/yr. He's not the same player he used to be (slower and more drops) and he won't have the wide open offense and good weather he had in AZ to produce big numbers. He'd make our WR corps better without a doubt but I just think that cost is a bit too high for what he'll bring.

So you're saying that someone we draft in the 2nd round will be able to give us 90 catches, 1000+ yards, and 10+TD's next year? Because that's what Boldin brings.

  8. PASS ON THIS DEAL. He's not worth $9mil/yr and giving up a 2nd Rd pick or Urlacher. If Urlacher's injuries and age are slowing him down the same thing is happening to Boldin. As far the value of those two players to their respective teams I'll say this:

When Urlacher is off the field our defense is noticeably worse. When Boldin is off the field the Cards offense keeps putting up points and getting to the Superbowl. If Boldin didn't have his injury history (only one complete season in his career) then it might be a better deal. I'd also be more in favor of it if he were coming in to be our complementary #2 WR instead of our #1, or at least if we had that bigger WR who was a downfield threat. We don't have that and so there's an opportunity cost in givng up that pick for an older player. Likewise, we have another opportunity cost when we give him that huge contract money that should go to a better player.

Boldin was leading the NFL in everything when he went down with that injury. He's legitamitely one of the top WR in the league when healthy. He's a TD scoring machine and he AUTOMATICALLY makes Hester even more dangerous as a deep threat. If you line up Boldin/Hester/Olsen/Forte with Cutler as your QB, you're going to have one of the best offenses in the league.

If he's not worth $9 million, then I don't know who is. The people who slurp Fitzgerald are hilarious. Is he great? Absolutely. But Boldin missed 4 games and still only finished with 7 less receptions, 300 less yards, and 1 less TD. If you have the opportunity to get Boldin for a 2nd rounder, you do it and run away giggling like a little girl.

I don't think people realize how DYNAMIC our offense could be with Boldin. Obviously you have Cutler, a Pro Bowl QB back there behind what should be a good offensive line. You have Boldin as your #1 receiver, a Pro Bowler and a stud. Hester lines up on the opposite side, a deep threat with enormous potential. And you have Bennett in the slot, who Cutler has a LOT of confidence in. Then you have Olsen, a premier pass-catching TE and Clark who isn't too shabby himself. Not to mention you have a DAMN good RB in Forte who is fantastic catching out of the backfield. You kidding me!?!?

You're adding Cutler, Boldin, Pace, and Schaffer/Omiyale to an offense that scored 23.4 points per game last season and finished 9-7. And they COULD have been 12-4 or 13-3 if not for some stupid late-game breakdowns. Yes please.

  9. Aren't you sort of contradicting yourself? You're are basically saying the scouts know more then all of us, then bringing up 2 failures of scouts in Colston drafted so late adn Terrell so early.

Exactly. It's a crapshoot no matter what. However, BearSox is so sure that Massequoi will suck, so it doesn't make a difference. I don't know how Colston going so late is a scout failure either way. In half of his rookie season, he outperformed his best college season. Part of the reason he was picked so late is due to people thinking he'd end up as a TE in the NFL also.

  10. Not a fan, at least not in the 2nd round. Frankly, the 3rd round is iffy for me.

I just really have an issue w/ players who rise by leaps and bounds in the offseason. Barden is another I question, at least as high (2nd round to Oakland) as I have heard some talk about.

I know players move up and down in the offseason, but players who take major leaps (or downturns) are players that raise red flags for me. Very shortly ago, he was considered a 4th or 5th rounder. Then he started to climb. Okay, fine. But the 2nd round? That is a 2 to 3 round rise. That is a bit much for me. Ditto Barden.

I personally believe too much is made out of offseason stuff, and too often the offseason stuff begins to cloud what the player actually did on the field. If a guy was mediocre in college, but is 6'4 and runs a 4.34/40, all of a sudden he is a great prospect. Forget that he never could do crap in college. Not saying that is Mosoquai, but the point is the same.

If a guy rises some in value, fine. But when the rise is extreme, I just have to really question the value of that pick.

On the opposite side of that, I don't mind looking at a guy who slips some. Depends on the reason, sure. But if a WR was a stud in college, for a major program, but then slips because he could put up a great time on a track, in shorts...well, that is a player I like to draft.

Look at how high Joe Flacco's stock rose in the off-season. I wouldn't be too worried about it.

  11. If we draft him, the remote is going through my TV. This guy isn't that good.

Clearly you know more than all the NFL scouts who are watching him. I'm sure you though Marques Colston also wasn't good but that David Terrell was a stud.

  12. Holt's home/road splits the past 3 seasons:

    2008:

    Home - 34 rec, 483 yds, 3 td

    Road - 30 rec, 313 yds, 0 td

    2007:

    Home - 41 rec, 597 yds, 6 td

    Road - 52 rec, 592 yds, 1 td

    2006:

    Home - 45 rec, 660 yds, 7 td

    Road - 48 rec, 528 yds, 3 td

He definitely scores more touchdowns at home, but he actually got more catches on the road. And with our 2009 schedule, he'll get 4 warm/indoor games vs Detroit, Minnesota, Atlanta, and at the dome in Seattle.

And I wouldn't worry too much about the knee issues. He still managed to play in all 16 games for the Rams last year.
