Well, except that he might think "If the Bears are still paying me for 2015 anyway and my name is mud now so I'm not going to get the next 'big deal' from another team unless I play well this year" in which case he might have some incentive to think about it.

imdO, Cutler is our qb next year, at least. And what coach wouldn't want this scenario?. Cutler is better than average and IF you can succeed with him you have made your future, if not, well, it's Cutler's fault.

I agree except for that 2016 guarantee that kicks in when March 13 rolls around. So your GM needs to make this decision, not the coaching staff. And that's when it gets interesting.

Yea, basically if you keep him here this year, it effectively makes him here in 2016 too. If not, the Bears will be on the hook for 10 million minus his new contract. It's not a try it one year and wait and see decision. It's a 2 years or nothing thing decision.

There should be 12 or 13 million in dead cap space if he is cut next year. 10 million that is guaranteed, plus whatever is left of when the bears converted his salary into a signing bonus last year. 3.5 million is closer to his dead space number this year if he is traded.

I can't remember the article I read it in, but it was some Bears capologist who said what this year's impact was (which was large) and than next year it gets much smaller (depending on when you do it). This year, the only way you move Jay is if you trade him. Cutting him is just far too costly.

They must have gotten it wrong. It's common knowledge that 10 million of his 2016 contract will be guaranteed in March 13th.

Essentially the Bears have 3 days of free agency to figure out what to do with Cutler before the $10 mil kicks in for 2016. The same happens in 2016 with an additional $6 mil kicking in for 2017.
