Maybe another steal? Wonder if he can run block? If I didn't know a thing about Davis & Olsen, and yesterday you'd asked me who I thought was better, I'd have said Davis easily. But Olsen look as impressive as I'd hoped he would. No idea if he can block or not. But he does appear to be a steal. He'll be extremely important if we have a ton of plays desiged for a two TE set. But Olsen look as impressive as I'd hoped he would. Wow. Strong statement! The only concern with this guy was character, correct? He slid because of something he'd done? JA was killed for that pick and now some of the same folks are killing him for not signing him to a 50 year deal worth TEN BAGILLION DOLLARS. OMGZZZZZZZZZZ!!!!!! I don't mind rooting for a guy who got caught with a joint when he was a freshman but if there is something of real concern here, I'd like to know. He also would play some DE for them as a pass rush specialist. nfoligno Posted July 25, 2008 Report Share Posted July 25, 2008 I don't think it was a real big deal. He got into a fight two years ago at a party, and was arrested for assault. He got a 4 game suspension for that. To my understanding, that was his only issue. He was a highly touted HS kid who did little to nothing after going to college, and his junior season was further hampered by the fight and suspension. His senior year brought a new coach and program, and Davis became a big part of the offense, playing both TE and DE. But I think the combination of (a) While not much history, he did have the fight and suspension ( While he did seem to break out his senior year, that was the only year he did much of anything. © VERY raw as a blocker, as it is simply not something he was ever asked to do. If you watched the guy play in college you could see he had skills, problem was that MSU was some what of a running team last year and didnt really get Davis involved as much as they could have. Actually, last year was the first time he really got involved in the offense. Prior to last year, he did very little, but became a far bigger contributor last year. I am not sure character is that great of an issue. Single events do not bother me so much as a history of issues. What my two concerns are (a) reports of a lack of motivation and ( blocking. Particularly in this case since the guy is friggen SIX SEVEN - TWO SIXTY! No reason he can't block other than technique and wanna. I can forgive the technique part as he may not have been involved enough in college. This is a coaching issue and I'd expect he'd learn plenty to become solid during this camp. I mean, all you need to know is how to bend your knees at the correct angle, position your shoulders and shove as hard as you can. Or dive at a guy's legs. TE blocking isn't exactly an art form! I didnt say he had been involved more prior to last year, just that they did not use him as much as they could have. Last year MSU ran for 2500 yards and only passed for 2800 yards. They had 580 carries, compared to 230 receptions. Davis's 35 receptions represents 15% of the total receptions in that entire offense. http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/player/profile?playerId=160704 As you can see it wasnt until the second half of the season they actually started to really get him the ball multiple times a game. The first 8 games he only had more than 2 receptions one time, the last 5 games he never had less than 3. In those last 5 games he scoured 3 of his 6 touchdowns and had more than half of his yards. I'm not saying he's as good of an athlete as Olsen (who is one of the best athletes at the TE position in the league) but he's at a similar level with a little less football skills (since he split time between BBall and Fball). I was thrilled when he was drafted because I think we'll see him brought along slowly initially but able to replace Clark a year or two from now, which will continue to give the Bears one of the best TE corps in all of football. The one DEFINITE thing I learned was that the Nick Hill's release is horrible, his arm-strength seems to be on par with Chad Pennington or Johnny Damon, and everything about him looks awkward because he's a lefty. We appear to have gotten one helluva a deal in Davis. Desmond Clark was on the Lawrence Holmes show in the SCORE this morning, and Clark was praising what a great blocker Davis was and how he's going to be the main blocking TE. This was surprising to me. From watching them he looked just as big and fast as Olsen, and actually had better hands then Olsen. Olsen dropped one and bobbled another when I was there. (How many drops did Olsen have last season?) Meanwhile Davis's hands were like glue. If he can become the best blocker of the 3, he'll be the best overall TE of the 3.
