Rams | Team has little wiggle room under cap

Wed, 11 Feb 2009 05:24:57 -0800

Nick Wagoner, of stlouisrams.com, reports the St. Louis Rams have roughly $14 million in cap space. However, the team must budget a little less than half of that open space to the rookie class that must be signed following the NFL Draft, which leaves little wiggle room to re-shape the roster with the cap situation as it stands.

Rams | Negotiations with Atogwe expected to intensify soon

Wed, 11 Feb 2009 13:11:42 -0800

Nick Wagoner, of StLouisRams.com, reports the St. Louis Rams are believed to begin serious negotiations with impending free-agent FS Oshiomogho Atogwe later this week.

With 14, I'm not so sure they'll be able to sign Atogwe. Last year, Ryan was the 3rd overall pick and he got $12 per. If their pick even gets $10 or $11 per, I doubt they'll be able to sign Atogwe. He's going to want $5-$6 per.

Then he might be a great pick up for us.

I don't know much about the guy but I have heard my friend say enough about him and he is never stirred me wrong(although he is a pucker fan) Do ya'll think he will work in our system.

I would like to get him if we don't have plans to upgrade the CB position. I'm still on the sign Osamuhga, move Nut to FS, and draft a pass rusher bandwagon. I also want M. Brown back in uni for the Bears. He can player coach and backup both safety positions. Vasher to nickel. D Manning to special teams, situational defender and dime package.

The Bears draft Safties and typically do not acquire them via trade or free agency. Arch is the only one in recent years that I remember bringing from outside the organization.

This area will be addressed during the draft and will cost less.

WR, OL and RB have been where the bears have made moves to improve the team outside of the draft.

I can almost guarantee they won't sign Osamugha. He will command one of the biggest contracts for a CB in the NFL. The Bears are already paying pretty big money to Vasher (who they can't cut) and Tillman, and have serviceable backups. They aren't going to pay 8 mil or whatever for a corner, when their bigger need is DE, DT, WR, RT etc. Plus in the Tampa 2 system corners are not top prioroty--pass rusher is.

I'd prefer Mike Huff.

Huh??? That's like saying the Bear's draft only draft quarterbacks.

If you draft specifically for a position time and time again, and that position sucks, it's time to consider rethinking your strategy.

Hell, at this point the quarterback position is more solidified then the safety position.

Does anyone know what kind of defense St. Louis runs? (other then a porous one that sucks badly).

What was Atogwe doing the game when Favre passed for 7 touchdowns? Or the first 4 games of the season when every team scorched the Rams for over 30 points?

Seemingly every safety not named Mike Brown sucks in our system. Is Atogwe really all that, or does he have inflated stats in a really, really, really bad system?

In other words, if we gave him a huge money deal, how dissappointed would we be with him?

I honestly don't know, I'm just wondering.

I'd prefer Mike Huff.

Huff is a guy with tons of potential but he never made it with the Raiders. I'd be all for bringing him in on a 1 year deal worth around $3 million if it meant being a back-up or a starter if Manning goes down or plays poorly.

Atogwe is a good player but he tends to take terrible angles and he misses alot of tackles.

The problem with what you're saying is:

1. Huff has 1 interception in the past 48 games he's played. This is with teams throwing away from the greatest cornerback who will ever live.

2. He was bad on a really bad defense. That's really bad.

3. He's not a free agent. He may not get cut. Unless there's a roster bonus due, why wouldn't Oakland wait until September 1st to cut him?

In other words, this is not a viable option at this point.

I am not say that this is what the Bears should do but just fits their pattern of operation. I think they should look at Dawan Landry from Baltimore.

Landry's primarily a strong safety, and he had a major spinal injury from which he still hasn't been medically cleared. I'd take a look at Atogwe before him. Michael Huff and Anthony Smith are both interesting, but they'd both be projects.
