You have one of the most accurate kickers in the game. Why risk a turnover. He missed, it happens.

I know it's only his first year, but I'm beginning to grow tired of Trestman's decision making already. I credit him for changing the offense, but he's been pretty bad at everything else.

You don't freakin settle for a 47 yard Game winning FG with at least 2 downs to play with. If you lose yardage on two consecutive plays, you suck. Had the kick been inside of 40, kicking it would be understandable. Not 47. That is so damn conservative.

Since 2001 (including the playoffs), kickers have successfully hit field goals at an 81 percent rate when no timeout was called prior to the snap, and 76 percent when a timeout was called.

 

However, it’s worth noting that the average distance on “iced” kicks is 39 yards, compared to 36 yards on kicks on which timeout was not called.

 

Also interesting: In overtime, the average distance of kicks after timeouts and kicks with no timeouts called is about the same (37 yards).

 

In that instance, “icing the kicker” by calling timeout works. Kickers hit only 69 percent when “iced”, 87 percent when they are not.

 

It matters. Especially on a 47 yarder and having to sit there through 2 time outs after warming up. They shouldn't have tried that on second down no matter how you look at it.

They had more downs to play with, 47 yards is not a chip shot, and you had been moving the ball down their throats for the majority of the game. Why settle?
