  1. Bears D has been on the field alot already. That's not a recipe for success against the Packers. Most of it because of the refs, but they need to find a way to force some 3 and outs. The offense needs to do something.

The Bears D isn't likely to force more than 1 or two 3 and outs all day, IMO. They want the defense off the field? The offense needs to match the Packers drives. It's really that simple.

  2. Paea is the NT. Johnson is big enough, IMHO, to be a 3-4 DE. A smart DC can use him to rush at times and hold at times. Rotate and shift LBs as necessary.

Paea is pretty darn small for a 3-4 DT as well, and frankly his record of health doesn't inspire confidence as the key guy in the middle of that defense.

  3. If my focus is purely on fixing the D...

I keep Peppers at a lower contract. Melton probably leaves. SMC stays because of the contract. Tillman and Jennings stay. Conte gets escorted out of Halas Hall by security.

    Move to the 3-4.

    1. HaHa Clinton-Dix, FS, Bama - An absolute stud who starts day one

    2. Anthony Johnson, DT, LSU - Can get after the passer and plays tough. Starts day one if Melton is let go.

    3. Shayne Skov, ILB, Stanford - Smart player who is always in the right spot. A beast.

Peppers - Paea - Johnson (Collins, Ratcliff back ups)

SMC - Briggs - Skov - Bostic. (Greene is rotational, and Briggs gets to choose where he feels best)

Peanut - HHCD - Wright - Jennings (Bowman back up)

Kind of soft up front, but tons of athleticism. Blitzes from everywhere. Extra LB helps erase the over pursuit problems from this year. Maximizes SMC's ability. Allows for lots of zone blitzing from a variety of locations.

I don't think Johnson seems like a big enough guy to play a 3-4 DT slot, and honestly, even the best 3-4 DT's don't get after the quarterback much. That's not what you want from a DT in that scheme...in that scheme, the DT's job is to "Not be moved" so that the defense can't run right up the middle. Guys like Vince Wilfork in that scheme get 2-3 sacks per season and still make the pro bowl, because "getting after the QB" isn't the job of a 3-4 DT.

This is why I don't think that the 3-4 is a good strategy...it's so hard to find one of those really good, run-stopping DT's. You literally can't use a 4-3 DT in that scheme, you get eaten alive on the ground. I don't know who else is available but if you want to make that switch...Raji is a free agent this offseason.

Johnson seems like a good pick for the Bears but as a 4-3 DT actually.

  4. Also worth noting that Matthews is out, and 2 other of their best pass rusher Mike Neal and Nick Perry are listed as questionable.

This game will be won in the trenches. I Jay gets time to throw he will go off.

    How is Lacey?

  5. Definite Cut:

    S - Conte Wright

DL - MCCLELLIN Peppers(unless he takes huge pay cut)

What the team does with Peppers might well be the biggest decision of the offseason (QB included). Cutting him leaves something like $7.5 million in dead cap space to pay out his bonus, keeping him costs even more than that.

I'd have to guess they'll do something to restructure him again to try to bring both numbers down, but maybe without moving as much into the future. Who knows though.

  6. Here we go, it will be interesting to see if he is "rusty" like Cutler was vs Cleveland and Philly. We are going to need Peppers, SMC, and the rest of the D-Line to come up big.

I just hope we have different results compared to 2011. Same location, same QB's, hopefully a different result. In a way, Rodgers playing sets up for either an epic win or a disastrous loss. We can win and go in knowing we played the best Packer team they had, knock them out of the playoffs, we do it at home, and avenge the 2011 NFC Championship loss - or we lose, to a QB who has been out forever, to our division rival who wins the Division in our house, and knocks us out of the playoffs, all in one shot.

Man it is going to be crazy. We really need the fans to come out and be loud. Rodgers timing has to be a little off and a lot of noise surely will make it worse.

Wasn't that the game that the Packers secondary players were quoted saying "Same old Jay" after beating him?

  7. Psh, I was supposed to start this since they won last week lol....oh well they have 7 wins under your watch so ill bow down...if they lose though its all your fault!

My apologies...I was in San Francisco all last week so I couldn't make the thread!

  8. I mean no disrespect but how on earth do you think we win in GB? That is an auto-loss. If they keep it within 3 scores, it'll be a moral victory.

GB is nearly as banged-up as Chicago, the only difference is they haven't lost their QB.

  9. I have had some time to reflect on the Cutler injury and I wanted to ask the board something:

What do you really expect from your backup quarterback when your starter is likley to be out for an extended time?

I would say that most backups are such for a reason; either they are in the development stage or have not succeeded on the big stage in other locales. Not every backup can come in and perform like Frank Reich; usually their performance tends to gravitate towards the Caleb Hanie end of the spectrum.

For me, the best I can hope for from McCown is a .500 record. I don't think he will win every game with Cutler out.

    Your thoughts?

P.S. I don't think we should think that the 1/2 game sample size of McCown's performance in this offense is evidence that Cutler is expendable, IMHO.

Depends on the strength of schedule over that time period and what your team thought it was beforehand.

A playoff-caliber team facing a weaker portion of its schedule might hope to go 4-0 over a stretch. With a backup QB you might drop that to 3-1.

A playoff-caliber team facing a stronger portion of its schedule might have hoped to go 2-2 over a stretch, with the backup QB you're talking 1-3 or hopefully not 0-4.

A borderline playoff team/borderline playoff missing team might have hoped to go 3-1 over a stretch unless they're playing really good or bad teams. A backup QB might drop that to 2-2 if they do an adequate job.

The Hanie debacle went from a situation where the Bears might have won 3 of their next 4 games to a 4 game losing streak. That was clearly unacceptable. Way too many teams have guys on their roster who can step in and do better than that.
