  1. That would not be a bad idea, but I think with all the lousy QB play in the NFL, he might be in demand. Maybe go get him now, while they are lousy and feel the need to change things up.

Yeah, I think there's a good chance they'll hold on to him for another year or two and then try to get the "Matt Schaub" type deal for him, with multiple draft picks, right before he hits free agency.

  2. Well they did at least try.. They drafted two first round busts in Chris Williams and Gabe Carimi that should have solidified both tackle positions for the next 7+ years.

But let's just be honest...their O-line scouting sucked. They drafted 2 guys who fell a bit in the draft because of injury concerns and then those injuries bit the Bears in the arse. That's not the only thing they tried though, that's on top of failed O-line signings like Orlando Pace and Frank Omiyale. And on top of that, Omiyale has been better since leaving the Bears, so there's a level of coaching as well.

They didn't scout well for the O-line and they did a rotten job of finding people who could coach it.

“You always hear ‘next man up, anything can happen,’ but the situation that happened like that, it’s kind of like, ‘Man, these things really do happen,’” Bostic said. "I wasn’t too surprised about it. Now I’ve got to kind of step up now. I don’t want any drop offs to me from D.J. Really, (I’ve) just got to go out there and just prepare the best I can and go out there and do my best. I did alright (against the Giants); a lot of stuff still to clean up. Especially getting thrown in there kind of like that, I really wasn’t expecting it. But you’ve got to be expecting it. (I’m) just learning from those mistakes I made in the game and cleaning those things up and trying not to make the same mistakes twice.”

Bostic spent time during Monday’s practice working at his customary spot in the middle, but also took repetitions at strongside linebacker as a contingency plan for if James Anderson suffered an injury that would force him to miss time. When Anderson sustained a back injury that forced him out last Thursday, the Bears plugged in veteran Blake Costanzo and kept Bostic in the middle.

If that situation takes place again, there’s a chance the Bears would move Costanzo to the middle and Bostic to the strongside.

“He’s ready,” defensive tackle Stephen Paea said of Bostic. “In the preseason, he showed some flash. Everybody’s got to step up.”

But Bears coach Marc Trestman knows that won’t be easy for a rookie, no matter how promising a future he has in the defense.

“He hasn’t spent a lot of time out there, but he has played,” Trestman said. “He doesn’t have the experience that D.J. has, but he has speed and he’s an explosive young man. It’s just about working together with the guys and getting acclimated to the calls, and fits and things like that. I think we’ll do fine.”

To ensure that happens, Bostic said that in addition to taking copious notes during meetings, he’s picked the brains of Lance Briggs, Anderson and Williams. Naturally, Bostic’s grasp of the system is better now than it was during the preseason.

Still, Bostic says there’s a long way to go before he’s exactly where he wants to be.

“I feel more ready each and every day,” Bostic said. “I’m understanding it more, reacting faster. Guys are helping me out. Lance, even D.J., James, they’re watching me, making sure I’m making the calls as well because anything can happen. I’ve got three great linebackers in that meeting room. To learn from them each and every day, like I said before when I first got here, not too many people can walk into a linebacker room, and have the number of years that (fellow rookie linebacker) Khaseem (Greene) and I both were able to walk into. So we’ve been taking full advantage of that.”

  4. I got to believe the state of the Giant's offense alone should point to a victory for the Bears. With a weak offensive line and no running game, we should be able to generate pressure and minimize Nicks and Cruz.

The Bears should destroy this team.

  5. We get Collins news pretty soon, and he was playing well before he got hurt. Melton is gone, Paea was out, this just doesn't add up to a good situation. Not much you can do when you have poor depth at the DT position, and that affects the poor defensive playy.

To be fair, very few 4-3 teams could have both of their starting DT's out and have anything other than "poor depth" at that spot.

Chicago Bears defensive tackle Nate Collins is scheduled to have an MRI on Monday to determine the severity of the left knee injury he suffered in the third quarter of the Bears’ 26-18 loss to the New Orleans Saints.

Fellow Bears’ defensive tackle Stephen Paea said he spoke to Collins after the game.

“I have no idea (how bad he is injured), “Paea said. “He has an MRI tomorrow (Monday) to find out what’s going to happen. He’s good. He had a smile on his face, so he’ll be back.”

    ...

Collins hurt the knee while attempting to pressure Saints quarterback Drew Brees on a pass attempt. Collins' knee appeared to buckle as he was tied up with a New Orleans offensive lineman. The four-year veteran defensive lineman grabbed his knee after falling to the ground and remained on the turf for a short period of time before eventually walking back to the locker room under his own power. He was eventually ruled out for the remainder of the game by the team’s medical staff.

Collins moved into the Bears’ starting lineup after Pro Bowl defensive tackle Henry Melton suffered a season-ending ACL tear. Entering Sunday’s game versus the Saints, Collins led all Bears defensive linemen with 10 tackles through the first four games. Collins also recorded two quarterback pressures and forced one fumble.

  7. Ok, I would agree but 'what if' Cutler is injured? Many here are not confident in McCown's ability as a back up. I am not one of those however.

I agree that it would be better to not waste the money on a guy that will probably eventually be cut and especially for a guy that has had the career he's had. I also agree with the comments that more needs to be learned about this guy, maybe the Bears are doing that? As another put, could the 'QB whisperer' fix what ills him (Freeman)?

If Cutler gets injured and the current backup plan is insufficient, then that is a failure on the part of the current administration. In that case they will have gambled and lost.

You can only have so much depth in a salary capped league. Sometimes that does happen. But, you'll recall, Cutler getting injured and the backups being incapable of winning games/advancing 5 yards helped lead directly to the replacement of both coaches and the GM last time it happened. That's the penalty if they gamble on the guys they have now and lose. The Texans, OTOH, lost 2 QB's 2 seasons ago, threw a rookie out there, and still made a solid enough showing to wind up in the playoffs because they made solid personnel decisions.

The time to bring in another backup QB was March. It's too late now.

  8. For reasons others have noted we can talk about this in the offseason when we're deciding what to do about both Cutler and the backup QB spot. Other teams with struggling QB's might offer him more money and a better shot.

The Chicago Bears signed offensive tackle Roger Gaines and defensive end Cheta Ozougwu to the practice squad on Tuesday, and terminated the practice squad contracts of quarterback Jerrod Johnson and offensive tackle Jamaal Johnson-Webb.

Gaines entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Baltimore Ravens out of Tennessee State.

Ozougwu, meanwhile, played in two games with the Bears last season and contributed three tackles and another stop for lost yardage. It’s likely the Bears added Ozougwu to provide depth along the defensive line because the club could be looking to move defensive end Corey Wootton inside on occasion due to the loss of defensive tackle Henry Melton, who suffered a torn ACL on Sunday in the team’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Ozougwu signed a reserve/future contract on Jan. 2, but the Bears waived him on Sept. 1.

Ozougwu's move to the practice squad could mean the Bears might be looking to promote practice squad defensive end Aston Whiteside, who spent some time in training camp also working inside at defensive tackle.

  10. Ha, I was just trying to draw out Boston Boxer. :)

The Pats have a great coach and a great QB, their D is pretty solid so they'll never suck as long as one of those things above remains true. I just get tired of hearing about Brady and the invincible Pats all day long on ESPN.

Really, their D is solid? Serious Q since I haven't watched them this year but 2 years ago when they made their super bowl run their D was one of the worst in the league, and I remember them having so many problems in their secondary last year that they traded for that one guy from the Bucs to just add some sort of veteran presence back there.

  11. This is what I am tracking for next year:

    $18,183,333 - 2014 Salary

    $8,366,668 - Dead Money

    $9,816,665 - Savings

So we would save almost $10 million by cutting him.

But you''re still out $8.3 million in cap space by cutting him.

That's one where the Bears might conceivably be able to come to a deal with him dropping his 2014 salary down to like $12 million since they're going to have to take the cap hit anyway.

  12. Oh, I also should add to this, Soldier Field and Heinz field are some of the toughest places to kick in the NFL (even though it's not yet winter) and Gould has hit what, a 58 yarder and a 48 yarder in 2 weeks in those stadia?

  13. I'll obviously take the W but 459 yards to the Steelers who were averaging 240 is a bit alarming. AJ Green and Antonio Brown have torched the Bears for 350 yards this year. I hope Peanuts struggles are just due to injuries and not father time...If he's back I'd like to see him moved to safety to get him around the ball more and to get him off speed guys.

You know what? The yardage here doesn't bother me quite as much as it did in the previous games.

The Bears had a big lead early. That meant the Steelers were going to be throwing the ball up in the air, taking high-risk chances to try to have a successful big play and get back into the game.

Meanwhile, the Bears were in the perfect situation to "Bend but not break", the more high-risk plays the steelers attempted the more likely something was going to go wrong for them.

That's the ideal situation for a team to pile up yards and an ideal situation for the defense to pull off a couple big turnovers, which is exactly what happened.

  14. To me, I think the offense has explosiveness. They had a 40 yard pass to Marshall, a long run by Forte, and a long TD to Bennett. I know they came at inconsistent times, but I would gladly take each of those once a game.

I do agree, however, that this just feels "aight." Each game has been semi-close and they can't continue to depend on 4th quarter heroics by Cutler. Not that he can't do it, but to do this every week is impossible.

Here's the thing...tell me where there's an elite team in the league? Seattle is playing like one for now, but other than them? 12 teams will make the playoffs in the NFL and right now 11 of them feel "aight" (or worse) about their performance so far.

  15. Looking through, does anyone here have a clue how much the Bears have committed on next year's cap? They have a ton of guys who are free agents obviously, do they have space to play with?

Emery's "Signing guys to minimum contracts to maximize the space" might help the team a ton this year but it definitely leaves some openings next year, with Slausson in particular being a guy from that group I'd like to see signed again.

  16. Or keep TRich and still draft a QB with their original pick. The Colts are more than likely going to be a mid-20's pick. Though you can still get quality talent in that pick, there is no way that equals #3 from 2012. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but this trade seems fishy and would be contested in most Fantasy Football leagues as too lopsided.

The problem is, him being a #3 pick in 2012 doesn't matter one bit right now. Teams have a full season plus of video, scouting reports, and injury reports on him. Once you're on the field, your draft slot matters 1% as much as it did that April; you either perform or you don't.

  17. On Richardson's durability I haven't watched him play but some RBs are better at avoiding the big hit. LT was very good at it in his prime. Other RBs just run into defenders. Not sure where Richardson falls on that scale but if he takes a lot of contact that has to be a factor when considering his longevity.

That of course is the problem I'm having trying to figure this trade out too...I haven't watched him play, because who watches Browns games outside of Cleveland?

  18. Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett revealed Sunday he’s playing with a shoulder injury, but coach Marc Trestman said Monday that he’s “scheduled to play this week.”

“He was negative in terms of his… he had a bruise, but nothing significant,” Trestman said. “He had a full range of motion today.”

Bennett caught nine passes for 76 yards and a career-high two touchdowns, including the game-winning score from 16 yards out with just 10 seconds left in the game. Bennett caught a 23-yard pass three plays before the game winner, and shook Vikings linebacker Erin Henderson to gain extra yardage.

Bennett sustained the injury in the second quarter, and said, “probably so” when asked whether he expected the shoulder to be an issue as the season progresses.

“It was an issue today,” Bennett said. "But I was still able to play. There’s nothing I can do about it. If it hurts, it hurts. If it doesn’t, that’s a great thing.”
