For the second time in a little more than two years the Chicago Bears have tweaked the contract of defensive end Julius Peppers to create salary-cap room.

According to reporter Brian McIntyre, the Bears converted $3 million of Peppers’ $12.9 million base salary for this season to a signing bonus. That reduced his salary for this season to $9.9 million and created $2 million in cap savings for the Bears, who have been right up against the cap.

This move reduces Peppers’ salary cap for this season to $14,383,333.

Peppers last restructured his contract on Feb. 23, 2011. He is entering the fourth year of the $84 million, six-year contract he signed in 2010.

While the move creates flexibility for the Bears this season, it makes Peppers’ cap number in the final two years of the contract grow even more -- $1 million each year. Peppers is scheduled to earn $14 million in 2014 -- $13.9 million in base salary with a $100,000 workout bonus. His cap number now climbs to $18,183,333 for next season.

In 2015, Peppers’ base salary is $16.5 million and this move pushes his salary cap for that season to $20,683,335.

  2. Anyone know how Earl's concussion is coming along? How did he get it in practice anyway?

    STATUS

    Questionable

GM Phil Emery said the team is optimistic that Bennett (concussion) will be cleared to return for Week 1, the Chicago Tribune reports. (about 1 day ago)

  3. Couldn't agree with you more and the rest of the responses here. I posted in the thread about Bostic's hit that I was worried they'd fine him. It's not clear if the two helmets hit together to me but I think the rule is that since he led with his shoulder the hit was legal, regardless.

I hope he appeals it and wins. This is bullshit.

If there's one problem with Bostic's tackle form, when you check the video you can see that at the last second he ducks his head towards the ground, so that the top of his helmet is facing the target. IMO, that's the problem if there is one. You have to keep your facemask up and pointed at the player if you're going to hit him hard, that way you're not using the crown of the helmet to enhance the impact. If your eyes are on the defender where you're hitting him the whole time, it should be a legal hit, and Bostics facemask lowered to the ground just before impact.

  4. Any concern they might fine him for the hit? I've watched it a dozen times and can't tell if there's helmet to helmet contact. It looks like he leads with the shoulder pads.

As far as I'm concerned, I love it, regardless. Just that when a guy gets fined it tends to take a little out of him the next time he's in that position. I hope, if there is a fine, he pays the fine and keeps playing the same way!

    Bostic fined $21k for hit.

  5. WR. Is there anyone out there that would cut Earl Bennett. I am concerned the length of time out with this concussion and if he has another during the season does he miss 4 games. I know you want to look after injured players but looking at it from a business point of view if there are no major cap issues I would cut him and move on. I don't think anyone would be interested in a trade due to previous injury concerns. Then WR would be Marshall, Jeffrey, Anderson, Wilson and Seems and possibly look for a sixth from other teams cuts unless Aromashodu is kept as the sixth.

Due to Scott being injured Webb unfortunately will be the swing tackle.

IIRC the Bears still take a cap hit if the cut Bennett this season right? So there's basically no obvious reason to do so financially, just for the roster spot?

  6. Carimi seemed to have that mean streak too. I can't explain it. Bad luck. I think Williams was a known injury risk IIRC so that was Jerry's fault.

Carimi was a known injury risk coming into the draft too.

I think there was definitely some "this guy wouldn't be available without the injury risk, he's performed great so we're really excited to get him at this pick" going on in both of those guys. The Bears wound up being hurt by both.

  7. If Bostic keeps making plays like this, it's going to be awfully difficult for DJ Williams to get his starting job back. He is still a work in progress. To me, he just looks like an athlete right now, surviving off his natural physical gifts and instincts as opposed to playing smartly and technically sound. He had his missteps in the passing game last night, as he did in Game 1. Overall though, he looks like a definite keeper.

Let's keep in mind...most teams rotate their linebackers heavily. Very few linebackers stay on the field for both passing and running situations in this league. The Bears have been kind of spoiled by having one of those guys on their roster for a decade. The other ones around the league who play that many snaps often are all pros. Swapping in and out with Bostic for much of the season while the rookie learns would be a solid use for Williams.

  8. I'm not basing my judgement regarding cutler on these 2 preseason games. He's been here for a little while and I see a guy who has all the tools to be elite but he makes to many stupid mistakes for me to put him with the other elite guys. Granted an oline that's at least decent will help but personally I don't see an elite qb. I see a good qb that will make amazing plays 1 series and then follow it up and make us scream at him. I see a guy that will is capable of winning us games by himself and he will also loss us games by himself. Just my opinion of course

This is his chance to not be that guy. I'll even give him a few games of the season to get there. If Brett Favre can find a way to fit into that Vikings System in his late 30's, Jay Cutler can find a way to make fewer stupid throws.

  9. I'd like to know when the last time an entire side of an O Line was rookies. I'm sure it happens but I assume it's rare. Hey, at least Cutler will see them coming! LOL! I sure hope they figure something out.

I'd be surprised if it hasn't happened to the Bears in the last couple seasons.

  10. OK here's my thoughts after watching the game this morning. 1 that INT cutler threw is on both jay and alshon. It was a quick slant and Jeffrey needs to keep running through the route. However jay stared down alshon so hard everyone in there grandmother knew where it was going. 2. I like what I saw from Long. He made some mistakes but also showed his high motor and quick hands. 3. Webb was a mess. And it wasn't speed rushers. On 1 play it was a simple double move and he fell for 1st move then stopped his feet allowing defender to go around untouched. I hope it was just 1 game cuz with all these injuries now its only him there. 4. Not worried about the offense cuz last night it was 1 route ran to death and only 1 shot going deep. 5. I want to see more of ford to see if he can overtake Allen. I hope he can. There's more but that's enough for now lol

It is nice to see the Bears actually trying to run a quick slant. I was starting to think the staff was convinced if they called that play, Cutler would accidentally pull out a handgun and shoot the receiver instead of throwing the football, so they never called it to avoid murder charges.

  11. update on Williams, the injury seems to be lingering or be worse then first thought.

LB D.J. Williams still in a walking boot. DE Julius Peppers (hamstring) looks to be out for another day. #Bears

"In a walking boot" is a lot better than "scheduled for surgery".

  12. Hearing so far in 1 on 1 drills that Bushrod is holding his own against peppers. Long is tossing ppl around and Webb is getting owned by McClellan.

I know you think this is an indictment of Webb, but if nothing else..SMC beating someone is pretty good news.

  13. Oh yeah exactly. Plus we know sooner or later injuries will hit. Just ask philly as it seems they may have lost maclin to a torn acl. Which would be a huge blow

Hell, I'd have called Philly surprising if they'd lost fewer than 10.

  14. Trestman said today that there wasn't any mental errors today. As opposed to yesterday there were quite a few. This could be huge if true. Mental errors destroyed us last yr.

I believe I saw that he ended practice 10 plays early as a reward for the players doing so well.

  15. Much less trying to predict things after 1 non padded practice. Its why I ignore all rankings til we can actual see the games at least

I can come up with excuses for why this Bears team will win 3 games on the season and why they'll lose 3 games on the season (total). I'd think losing only 3 is more likely, but this is really up in the air on how the roster and coaching staff come together.

"We have a number of players that are under one-year contracts or their contracts will expire at the end of this season. That would be part of the planning process for 2014," Emery said as the Bears prepared to open training camp. "We are always open to dialogue with our players and with their agents, but I will tell you that with where we're at with our current salary cap and the room that we have in our cap in our efforts to put together a championship team in 2013, I do not anticipate that we will do any extensions of contracts during this season. All those will occur, with the players it will occur with, will happen in 2014 and not during the 2013 season."

"I guess if you're saying an enormous amount of leverage [for Cutler] that means we've had a great season," Emery said. "That's a problem I look forward to."

    ....

"I see a group of guys that are very dialed in," Emery said. "No, [i haven't seen any] pushback. I think all of the players are focused on doing their very best to contribute as an individual to our team's success. I have not seen any of that pushback. I see guys very focused, full of energy and working hard to attain our goals."

  17. I think the projections for Cutler sound about right. New offense, new teammates, new coach, contract year etc.. I expect more of the same from him when it comes to numbers. Surely they will be a little better than last year with Mike Tice no longer controlling the offense.

I say his ceiling is something like 32 TD's, 4,500 yards 17 INT's, and his floor is last year's numbers, which aren't very good. He'll wind up somewhere in the middle: 23 TD's, 3,800 yards 15 INT's

Those level of numbers are sorta similar to Matt Schaub, Carson Palmer, and Joe Flacco last year.

That ought to be good enough to put the Bears in the playoffs, and his salary for the next year gets decided by what he does in said playoffs.
