  1. Copart49 hasn't rejoined yet. We still have space for 2 more if anyone is interested.

Does anyone have times to avoid for the draft? If you work on the weekend, you may have to autodraft, but I'm willing to try and accomodate people as long as it doesn't get too complicated.

    Looking for feedback guys.

  2. Thank you. I don't care if Tuckers skin is purple. He's freaking terrible. No business where he is. And the Rooney Rule requires interviews for Minorities. The rule in itself is racist. Basically says whoever the minority is can't get an interview on their own

Where your point breaks down is that the Rooney rule only affects Head coaches and GMs. Coordinator positions aren't subject to the rule.

So by suggesting that he got his job due to a minority requirement, you simply discredit your opinion by displaying your ignorance.

I think that last season he just didn't have the horses on the line after injuries and had some bad position coaches not familiar with Lovie's scheme that they were still running. The defense looked half-way decent early last year until the injuries mounted and the youngsters didn't know what they were doing.

This year, we are in year one of a new scheme and all we have seen is preseason where they may scheme a little, but I and others have noticed that he was running a lot of man to man coverage ostensibly to evaluate player skills.

The Seahawks game was a disappointment, but I don't think I personally would have felt as bad about if Alshon and Brandon hadn't dropped so many key passes and they were only a TD behind at halftime. The phantom PI call on Marshall didn't help either.

I don't know if Tucker is a good OC or not - I think we simply haven't had enough time to judge yet. Unfortunately that takes time. We will know better after a few games this year.

  3. Hi guys!

When I recreated the league, it set a default draft date of this Sunday. I've changed it to Sunday the 24th of August, but that's written in sand. For the weekend of Sat/23rd Sun/24th, when are times that people are absolutely not available?

Also, we only have 8 signed up so far. Are there people that just haven't signed up yet? Otherwise we have 4 slots available if anyone would like to join. I prefer 12 team leagues but we can go with 8 if that's what we've got.

    Give me your thoughts

  4. I agree with that assessment and I believe that since they didn't have a head coach in line, their communication process with Brian wasn't clear because they didn't know exactly which way they would go with him. If Marenelli stayed I think Brian would have had his fairwell year. I believe he would've held the D together better with Marenelli as DC, but not with Tucker. Moving on was for the best

Just to clarify the timeline, the coaching decisions were made in January and the situation with Urlacher happened in March after the start of free agency. There likely hadn't been much communication between the team and Url after all his coaches left.

I do agree though that had Maranelli stayed, Urlacher would have more likely returned for another season.

  5. Fair enough...Like my 'well educated" colleague Stinger would say; "woulda, coulda, shoulda".

But to you I say, good points. Peppers didn't 'buy in'? I hadn't heard that.

Briggs made a comment in preseason that not everyone had bought in yet. After the season it was speculated that he was referring to Peppers.

I've seen many times in the corporate world where a new management team comes in and some of the existing employees (particularly really talented people) tend to groan and whine about all the changes. Their points usually tend to fall along the lines of "We've done this such and such a way for years and we've always performed at a high level." I've seen those types stay, I've seen them leave voluntarily, and I've seen them fired. The ones that stay tend to be miserable. The ones that leave end up better off because they find a new situation that they accept at face value because it's new.

Now in this instance, I have to imagine that Urlacher (who was very close to Lovie) might not be thrilled with ANYTHING that changed. And, being a leader, he could have had a negative influence on the younger guys simply by example. Now I for one would like to think that when games that count started, Urlacher's competitive spirit would take over and he would play at a high level. I'm just not sure that that fact alone could overcome the negatives that he might have displayed during TC that might have delayed the younger guys buying in and become a general distraction.

Personally, I was relieved when Urlacher wasn't re-signed - and in particular retired. I potentially saw a power struggle just because - well - Urlacher is kind of a vengeful dick.

As for why no other teams signed him, I think he still had enough in the tank to help some other team - and certainly the Bears if Lovie was still around. The problem may have come in where his accustomed position of leadership couldn't be given to a guy that might not even start, or would be a one year mercenary. And another concern would also have to be how much effort he would put into learning a new scheme if he was on a one year deal.

An example that comes to mind is Kreutz. He was THE leader on the offensive line for years. The Bears offered him less than he thought he was worth so he took a one year deal with the Saints for less than the Bears were offering. In October of that year, he quit the team. He just left the team because he wasn't feeling a love for the game any longer. Can anyone say bad signing by the Saints?

I'm not saying that would have happened with Urlacher either with the Bears under a new regime or with a new team, but there does seem to be the possibility that his pride may have gotten in the way and prevented him from being what he used to be on the field no matter who he may have played for.

  6. I have a couple possible scenarios that could have happened had Url been re-signed.

    1) Url could have gotten injured and missed some or all of the season. It's not out of the realm of possibility.

    2) He could have had a negative effect on the locker room by not buying in to the new regime - like Peppers

  7. The Safety market has pretty much dried up with Clemons, Allen, and Major Wright listed as the top available Safeties. Allen and Peppers are the top DE's remaining. So essentially we can only get backwards at this point at those positions unless we get Jared Allen.

We also have to replace or re-sign Melton, Wootton, and Tillman.

    Ok Captain Obvious! ;)

There are generally 3 phases to free agency. (And you should know this by now)

Phase 1: Encompases the first couple of days where the first tier guys get signed. This is when the big money contracts happen.

Phase 2: Encompases everything from the first few days to the draft. This is where guys have to find their market value because they haven't been offered what they think they are worth during Phase 1. This was the phase last year where we signed Zach Bowman, DJ Williams, James Anderson, Kelvin Hayden, Matt Slauson, Josh McCown, and Eben Britton.

Now those aren't flashy signings, but provided 3 starters and some serious depth and role players/

    Phase 3 is post draft

It wouldn't surprise me if we re-sign all 3 of those guys too after they learn that what the Bears are offering is competitive.

  8. I'm all for clarity. No worries.

I know I've seen it done that a team just releases a player, and then makes him a June 1st designation on or after June 2nd. Maybe they closed that loophole since then.

If that's the case, I'm quite sure that they will take the full $8ish mil proration on this year's cap so they get the full amount free for the beginning of free agency. $10 mil more available at the start of free agency is better than $14 mil in June. Besides, they can structure guaranteed roster bonuses for new FAs in early next year for the money they took the hit on this year. It's not going to prevent us from doing anything we want to do.

  9. A few points:

    1. Don't use spotrac as a resource. It's overly simplistic in approach and it makes their numbers wrong too often. Use http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Bears&Year=2014 instead.

    2. They can release Peppers at the start of free agency and use the June 1st designation to get all of the cap savings immediately.

    3. In the offseason, only the top 51 contracts count against the cap.

    4. If they convert part of Cutler's salary into bonus, they will likely only do it once. Assuming anything else is silly.

  10. and/or pushing Cutty's,/Jennings'/Gould money to 2015...

I would imagine Cliff might have known this would happen...

    2 quick points

    1. It's only an estimated $4 million per team. That isn't going to make a huge difference.

    2. The ability to restructure doesn't work like that. They can't move cap money from one year to another. They can replace salary with a pro-ratable bonus that gets spread out over the whole contract.

  11. He was a second year player btw, and I'm not saying Freeman is Tom Brady. I could careless about Freeman. Brady is just the first person that comes to mind when someone mentions a back up qb winning a super bowl.

For me it's Jeff Hostetler and the Giants.

As for Freeman though, we don't have the cap space to rework his deal without spreading it over 3 more seasons. That would be a dumb move for both sides.

  12. Like I said, if you throw out his games against the Cards and Packers, #1 and #2 in sacks allowed last year, his stats look dismal. 27 tackles and 5 sacks in 13 games.

I'm not ready to pull the plug just yet but I have my doubts.

Why in the world would you leave those games out?

It's like saying "If you don't count the games where he played really well, he really sucks."

  13. I think it depends on who hits the FA market....If Greg Hardy doesn't get resigned for whatever reason then I'd cut my loses with Pep, save the 10M, and put it towards Hardy.

First off, never use spotrac for contract info. They steal data from other websites and don't analyze or display it properly.

    Use this site instead: http://overthecap.com/

Yes we would save $9.8 mil by releasing him, but he would still cost $8.6 mil against the cap.

One key point to keep in mind that releasing him the year after he renegotiated to help the team could cause players to be disinclined to help the team in the future.

Another point is that, unless his play falls off a cliff all year, replacing his production for $8.6 mil would be impossible. That means we would be paying more cap money (including the dead cap space) for less production.

If his play drops a bit, it wouldn't be unreasonable to ask him for a reduction of his salary by a few million.
