  1. I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination. But your analogy is pretty much spot on. The question I have is if Weems grabs it, and it has been pushed back into the field of play then its still a live ball. Even though the opposing team 'touched' the ball, it was while he was in the air. Hence why they jump to put it back into the 'live' field. That being the case, if one of their players touches it, its down. If weems touches it and then drops it, its their ball. And if it rolls into the endzone and they fall on it, a score for them....right? Perhaps we've over analyzed this because now my head hurts. :banghead

This should clear it up for everyone.....

    ‘No Consequence Rule’

Bears fans were probably confused when special teamer Eric Weems tried to go after a loose ball that the Vikings had saved from going into the end zone on a punt. The ball ended up going out of the back of the end zone and was ruled a touchback.

Monday, Trestman explained why Weems went after the ball:

“(Special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis) explains it as ‘no consequence rule’. Once their player touches the football, you have a chance to attack the football, and there’s no consequence other than a touchback so it’s basically our ball or nobody’s ball. In other words, we had a player positioned to pick it up and run with it, it’s still, my understanding it would have gone back to the 20-yard line as a free ball, it would not have been sitting there at the one-yard line, so in or out, we touch the ball the ball’s going back to the 20-yard line.”

When asked why more teams don’t go after the ball in that situation then, Trestman said: “That’s a good question, I wouldn’t be ready to answer that one.”

I think they don't teach it much because the players are usually told to stay away from the kick initially for fear a bad bounce causing a fumble type situation. That's some advanced special teams sh!t.

  2. Since I have been watching this team Emery is the most experienced guy they have hired at this position since Jim Finks. Both Hatley and Angelo were glorified scouts. This guy came in with a plan as to how he wants to approach things and didn't give a bunch of BS rhetoric like JA and Hatley wanted nothing to do with a coaching hire while it seemed Emery basked in it. Trestman comes with a pretty nice resume but I still wonder if he is a little late in the game but so is Ariens in AZ. I'm cautiously optomistic.

One counterpoint - I'm pretty sure when Angelo started, he wanted to fire Jauron after his first year. Then they up and went 13-3 and had Ed McCaskey saying on National TV that Jauron would be extended even before the regular season ended. Angelo didn't have the option to hire anyone until Lovie.

  3. Im a plumber not a english teacher, I dont really care about the form, its readable can be understood.

Not to nitpick, but he has a point. I couldn't make it through the whole thing. For me to read it, I would have had to copy and paste it into Word and make the breaks myself. If you want people to read your posts, you might just try putting in a few breaks to make it easier on the eyes.

  4. So to go contrary to my own advice, I'm going to swing at the dying horse.

I think an arguement could be made that Pace was considered an "upper echelon" guy. He was very similar to Michael Oher until he came to the Bears. It would be as if the Bears would have somehow brought Oher to the team this year, he is no doubt declining and probably wouldn't be considered 'top tier' any longer. However for so many years he has been a steady lynchpin in the Raven's offensive line.

As could the case be made for Chester Taylor. He was a 1,000 yard back, unfortunately for him had to play second fiddle to AP. When he got to Chicago, he didn't live up to the hope. So far Bush and Taylor are very similar in a lot of ways. I hope more for Bush and feel he'll come through this year.

Manumanuleuena I'll agree was not. Had flickers of greatness in St Louis but nothing sustained.

I was referring to high echelon in terms of financial investment. Pace signed a 3 year $15 mil contract. Top end OT money back then was in $9 mil per year range. If he was still playing at top form, the Rams would never have let him go. 2009 was his 12th year in the league.

Chester Taylor signed a 4 year $12.4 million contract - to be Forte's backup in his 8th year in the league. Hardly breaking the bank.

Those are two of Angelo's "take a medium chance on an aging vet" pickups that saved us lots of cap space, but didn't help us any. I'm not saying there were significantly better options available even at a much higher price, but the conservative approach didn't get the job done even though we were in great cap shape. It's kind of one of those "so I've got that goin for me - which is nice."

Peppers is in the perfect place...Chicago. I almost wonder if he would be better as a stand up OLB? I know a lot of the former 'hand in the dirt' DE's that are making the transition (seems to be a trend) are liking it. Maybe if/when the team changes to at 3-4? I could see McClellin benefitting from that.

I'm not putting Shea in the same ballpark, but they're both pretty good athletes in general. I think Peppers would be pretty good no matter what he plays. But I think he would be better doing what he's refined for so many years. And Shea is still learning a new position as he used to be more of a stand up LB.

  5. Altough he did try a few others that didn't work out; Chester Taylor, Brandon Manumanluena and Orlando Pace to name a few. But I agree sometimes Angelo didn't get enough credit for some of the good he did do. Bringing Peppers to Chicago was one of them.

Thanks for the explanation. It does help me better understand some of the 'behind the scenes'.

Those guys aren't upper echelon guys.

Is it safe to call Peppers one of the best 4-3 DEs in the league? I think so. Sure you wish you could pay him less right now, but is it even possible to replace him?

No problem on the explanation. I enjoy explaining it.

  6. There are a bunch of guys who they'll need to keep. Conte, Wright, Jennings, Slauson, Wootton and more are players who could all have big seasons who may need to be retained.

No doubt - but 1 mil more off what they would have had available anyway isn't going to affect their decision making.

  7. I'm not sure what it all means exactly but I would like it to be known that I don't like it. (If the team is positioning to jettison a player like Peppers a year in advance). It's crap. I'll believe that management has a bit more class than that and this is more akin to what Brady has done for the Patriots in the past.

It doesn't mean anything more than it did before the reworked his contract. They needed about $2 mil in cap space just for maneuvering during the season. Now that the season has begun, every single cap hit counts. That means that if a player gets injured and they need to replace him, they need cap space to pay both the guy on IR and the new guy.

Does this mean anything about their future intentions toward Peppers? No. Absolutely not. It would only mean something if they had pushed more of this year's cap into the future. As it is now, it only increases his cap hit in each of the next 2 years by $1 mil each. Considering how many guys are going to need new contracts, $1 mil in cap space isn't going to keep even one guy that otherwise might be lost.

As for Peppers' long term prospects with the Bears, I am quite sure that nothing is set in stone. I'm pretty sure that his play will be evaluated after the season and then a determination will be made. While his cap hits are higher than most players in the league, much of that is due to past contract re-negotiations to gain cap space. If a team starts doing re-negotiations like this and then releases the player the following year, the team is going to lose the good will of the players and they will decline to renegotiate when asked.

IMO for Peppers to be released, his play has to fall off a cliff and /or be injured. His dead money next year if released (after this renegotiation) is $8.36 million. That's an awful big cap hit to cover for a guy not playing for you.

One more aside - Cliff Stein is really good at his job, but the decision making resides with the GM. I think many don't want to give Angelo any credit for anything, but it was really his conservative approach that kept us so well off with the cap for so long. Angelo really didn't shop in the premium echelon during free agency other than Tait, Moose, and Peppers. He also only made it to the SB once.

It's still too early to tell Emery's cap management style since he's still doing a roster make over. They could have easily gained the cap space they needed by releasing E. Bennett or Devin Hester, or extending the contracts of Tillman, or Jennings, or Marshall, or Cutler.

  8. My draft got all screwed up and I dont like Foster as well as some of you may. So I will trade him for a top 10 RB, if anybody is interested? Cant you help a brother out, I dont want to be shitty and have to come on here and face you guys everydayyyyy.

Trade straight up for Trent Richardson?

  9. Since this league is pretty much a carry over from last years league how about we do it like its done in real life...Team with the worst record picks first and so on and so forth. Champions and runner up get the last picks....I'm sure you all know what I mean.

With the new guys we can somehow assign them to take the place of 1 of the teams of a guy who isn't playing this year. I suggest drawing from 2 hats, 1 with the new players and one with old teams.

Since there are more returning players than new players I think this makes some sense.

Here's what I did: I clicked the randomize order button, it randomized and set the order for us in advance.

You can check the order here: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1...65/draftresults

  10. Thanks for setting all this up. Can we decide the draft order in advance? I'm doing interviews tomorrow. While bad candidates are boring me to death I hope to "visualize" my entire draft pick by pick.

Any thoughts on determining draft order in advance everyone?

  11. Ok Folks. I've sent out a Commish note telling everyone to come here if they have any issue with changes to settings.

What we have here so far is:

    1. Draft time is cool - will not change.

    2. I will change the draft time to 1:00 per pick. 1:30 just makes it more likely to miss a pick for me as I'm distracted easily by shiny things and the more time I have to find shiny things.........

    3. We will drop a WR position in favor of an extra flex position of as many positions possible per Pix' request.

    4. We will reduce waiver time to 1 day because the time between Monday and Thursday games doesn't leave time for scrambling if you don't get the guy you want.

I've tried to be as inclusive in the decision making as possible. Please register any thoughts or inclinations now or they will be totally ignored. Nothing is final yet, but will be soon. Sooner if nobody bothers to respond.

    Thanx.

    Game on Bros!

  12. I would like a waiver priority list. Which I think is on by default, to help eliminate ppl raiding it like crazy. It's not that it has been a problem in the past, just to keep it open for everyone. Some ppl in some leagues live and die by going mid game trying to pick up ppl.

So I can put you down for the 1 day waiver period?

  13. I've gone ahead and set it to 1PPR. I also have it set for the Commish to review trades. I'm figuring I'll rubber stamp anything that seems reasonable, but bring it up to the group if anything seems weird.

You can review all the settings and scoring here: http://football.fantasysports.yahoo.com/f1/189065/settings

Let me know if anything looks like it needs to be changed.

Some questions I have for everyone else on the settings:

    1. Draft Time: Sat Aug 17 4:00pm CDT - Does this time work for most everyone?

    2. Live Draft Pick Time: 1 Minute, 30 Seconds - Is 1:00 too short? Thoughts?

    3. Roster Positions: QB, WR, WR, WR, RB, RB, TE, W/R, K, DEF, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN, BN Are these the Droids you're looking for? I can drop a WR and add a flex per Pix's request if no one objects.

    4. Waiver Time: 2 days - With Monday and Thursday night games all year, this should be 1 day if not eliminated altogether. What say everyone?

  14. Players' value could go down if they get injured too. I like this statement as mentioned above 1) it takes the issue off the table from the media and we know Emery likes to negotiate in private and 2) If there are players that would prefer to limit their risk in losing a rather large bonus by signing an extension early they'll have to consider the current cap situation and that means reduce their demands.

I realize we can't be extending all these terminating contracts but a couple months ago there were some rumors that Melton and his group were negotiating with the Bears. If there was truly nothing that could be done they wouldn't have even been talking. Given his huge cap hit with the franchise tag this deal seems to be one where an extension could be done within our cap constraint.

The deadline for negotiating a deal with Melton was July 15th. That's a league rule so Melton can't be redone until after the season.

With the lack of cap space, the only extensions that could really be done would be with players with a high salary this year that could be replaced with a larger signing bonus that could be prorated over future years. The only guys that fit that criteria are Cutler, Tillman, and Jennings. Now if they did any of them, they could free up space to do others, but they would have to be small deals.

There is always the possibility that simple extensions with no up front money could be done, but the player then would have no reason to do it now because nothing would be guaranteed until next year, and management would probably have to give up more in the future to sign them now. There is really no incentive for either side to do anything now in that scenario.

Really, I think that the Bears aren't in a hurry to spend any extra cash right now and that it has little to do with the cap.

  15. Great job in filling out the 12 team roster for the league. I love it, makes it more competitive!

Any further thought into making this a PPR scoring league?

With the number of starters and limited backups I would also love to see a possible change from

    2 RB - 3 WR - 1 TE - 1 Flex

    to

    2 RB - 2 WR - 1 TE - 2 Flex

It would give us added flexibility on bye weeks and to cover our butts when we are carrying an injured player on our roster.

That's totally feasible. I'm not really married to a whole lot. I think last year I just took the defaults and it all carried over to this year. I'm in the process of going over the settings and will start a thread with a number of things for people to vote on.

  16. I don't see it as snarky, maybe a little nit picky. It doesn't matter how or why he failed to make teams in the past. It also doesn't matter how long he has played the game. What does matter is if he can play.

I agree that he has to be able to play. However, it used to be an expectation that most WR take 3 years to really understand how to be an NFL receiver - and that's usually with 4 years of experience in college. I would expect that the route running and blocking assignments for a TE would be similar. Add to that just comprehending the scheme and the length of time to develop just makes sense to me.

You are correct that he does have to be able to play the game, but the comments in the article acknowledge that he was previously still developing and indicate that there is belief that he may have turned a corner in that development.

Anyone suggesting that he will put up ridiculous numbers or might be pro-bowl bound are delusional, but there is sufficient, yet tempered opinon that he could possibly exceed last year's performance by Kellen Davis (not much of an expectation really) IF he continues to improve.

No point in putting him on the 53 man roster yet, but there is cause for cautious optimism.

  17. That cut and paste of yours pretty much summed it up. In the past, he has shown great measurables that didn't translate to making the team. Not sure if that cleared it up or not. The entire context of my thoughts were that some players never figure out how to play when the hitting starts. Guys like him stick around longer because the coaches see immense talent in hope that it will develop.

Not to get snarky or anything, but do you realize that he only played organized football in his 5th year of college? How quickly to you expect a guy with that little experience coming into the league to develop? He was on the Rams in 2010 and bounced around the league in 2011. I haven't been able to figure out what he did last year after he got cut by the Bills at the end of camp last year, but evidently he kept himself in good shape.

Personally, it makes sense to me that he's just starting to "get it" now.

  18. His failures and lack of development have occurred when the pads come on.

What does that mean? It looks like he's been a fringe roster player.

    His History:

    St. Louis Rams

Onobun signed a four-year $1.92 million deal with a signing bonus of $129,000. Onobun, considered a risky pick, made the St. Louis Rams opening day roster in 2010. He was waived during final cuts on September 3, 2011.

    Seattle Seahawks

On September 13, 2011, the Seattle Seahawks signed Onobun to their practice squad.

    Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Onobun off of the Washington Redskins' practice squad on November 14, 2011.

    Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills signed Onobun on December 9, 2011. The signing comes after Onobun was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars on December 6, 2011. Onobun was cut on August 26, 2012.

  19. That's mine. Haven't had a chance to get onto yahoo to re-join. If you would like to have noobs join you that's fine, let me know and I'll back out. Otherwise I'll do the sign up this weekend.

    Go ahead and rejoin

We have room for just 1 more now.

Once one more joins we can discuss any rules / settings changes.

  20. It was a 12 team league with only 10 teams. I'm hoping we can get 2 more to join before the season.

There is also one team from last year that hasn't rejoined yet. I've been waiting a bit before asking for n00bs.

Who's team was Da Boars last year?

  21. Personally I love PPR. Makes things more interesting and can really help a lot of players who may not get the yds or TDs but they get a crap load of receptions to help even things out. Hey LT. If there's an open spot can I get an invite

Sure. PM me you email and I'll send you an invite.

  22. If you change it to live draft and get rid of the auto-draft, I think everyone would be happy.

If it is a live draft I will sign up.

If you want to add 1 point per reception I personally would be thrilled, however, others, including yourself, might not agree so I will go with whatever the majority wants. I just personally like that bonus and I think it makes the rankings a bit more challenging.

Changed it to live draft. Will consider other changes after more input.
