Well put.  I heard the same thing about him trying to raise the level of ILB pay and gotta call complete BS.  He wants paid, plain and simple.  Roquan keeps coming up with emotional reasons to hold out.  It was just like his rookie deal.  This is not a stand to beat the man situation here, as linebackers have been getting paid for decades.  Maybe he should start his form of TE U and see if anyone follows.  It's his time to get paid, but dude know when you're outgunned.

I'm to the point where I say you make a final offer and tell him take or leave it. If he says no then trade him and move on. He's a very good LB (not a great one) and is not worth the headache.

Another note - You can see Eberflus is to the point where he doesn't want to deal with this anymore. I actually feel bad he's the middle man on this. Poles needs to tell the media that all questions about Roquan will be addressed by him until the contract situation is resolved. Eberflus needs to concentrate on the players he has available.

I am just thinking if the Bears did give him a take it or leave it offer, and he said no, what other path is there?

The whole point of a take it or leave it deal is that there are no other deals and Roquan is not the type of guy to compromise.

If you remember, for his rookie deal, he was making a stand for all rookies, and in his message, he again said if signed it would be bad for the entire LB market. It is a contract to play a game. He is not a player personnel rep, and he doesn't even have an agent. Why is he worrying about others' contracts? Worry about yourself.

He actually has zero leverage here. He can sit out the entire year, then the Bears can tag him the next year. Losing $1-2M a year on a 5-year deal, when you make $16.5M per year is not much to comprise compared to losing a potential $26M over the next two years ($9.7M for 2022 and potentially $16.5M in 2023) and two of your prime years in the league. The Bears could actually tag him again after that.

He said it was a take it or leave it offer. We actually have no idea what has been said or exchanged. The major point is he shouldn't be negotiating. He should have an agent.

You also note he has no leverage here. That is the most important point. They'll eventually reach an agreement.

Figured this would come once a deal wasn't struck by last week.

Not a good look for Poles after all the other little things this off season. What sucks is Smith is gone, no way is he playing for the Bears even if they up the offer.

How do you know he's gone?  I would say it's probably 75%+ he stays. This is a negotiating tactic - nothing more. That being said, he really needs an agent. You can't take this personal - it's business.

This sort of thing really pisses me off! Back before rookie salaries were slotted I understood problems with negotiations among the high draft picks. However, this type of crap, guaranteed money on year 3 of a 4 year contract, is ridiculous. Does this kid want to start off his first preseason on the sideline watching his teammates get ready to rumble? Hell, get the f**k out there and prove you need a new contract in year three because you're so damn good! That is the way to negotiate! Not playing with your willie while everyone else is kicking ass.

Fxxk!!!  This crap pisses me off to no end. Hopefully, the holdout doesn't last too long.

Last time I was able to go to a Bears camp was when they were training in Platteville. I had a blast. Unfortunately, I now have trouble just walking across my bedroom, so I will probably never attend another TC. I hope you enjoy your trip. Be sure to give us your impressions after observing them working out.

Pix - It's been a while my friend. Hope you are doing well. I see Gary every few months as he lives about 10 miles from me. He goes with me to a game every year.

    Take care of yourself.

See that “Sack Man” Dent stopped by for a visit.  Wonder if he and Quinn compared notes?  Also saw that Tillman was in the house last week.  Always good to see the alumni stop by for a visit.

Flus has said having former players around is a priority for him. I'm glad to see a change in direction.

Anybody have an Athletic subscription and willing to summarize what they said about the Bears draft in this recent article?

    https://theathletic.com/3294957/2022/05/06/nfl-draft-execs-unfiltered/?source=freeweeklyemail&campaign=602288

The first paragraph summarizes the article:

This draft ended any confusion over the Bears’ objectives under new GM Ryan Poles and new head coach Matt Eberflus. They are embarking on a long-term rebuild, not scrambling to prop up the quarterback they inherited, Justin Fields, for the best possible short-term results.

Yeah, it looks like he wasn't getting an opportunity on offense because he was so valuable on special teams. A catch 22 perhaps.

Good catch on the COVID stuff. How many players played several seasons at one school before transferring during COVID? That surely would bring that list way down.

I myself have higher hopes for him, but I am not expecting anything crazy. Cohen had 53 receptions for 353 yards his rookie year. I don't think Jones will have that many targets, but something in the mid-30s for receptions and 400+ yards is not out of the question.

I'd be happy with 30-40 receptions, 400+ yards receiving and 4+ touchdowns.

Technically, we did touch a 2023 pick.  The Bears were able to convert a 2023 6th round pick into (2)- 2022 7th round picks from the Chargers.  They felt better getting 2 players a year earlier.

I'm good with losing the 6th round pick for this. Poles showed he knows how to replace it.

Monty is a good football player, not a star but a blue collar fight every step of the way player. They will offer him a team friendly deal, if he moves on, Herbert and Ebner  are better fits in this offense  anyway.

I'm not sure they offer him a deal. He's a good player and a solid back but he doesn't fit his offense.

For the record, I believe this is a 6 win team.  Believe it or not, I look forward to the growth and an optimistic that we finally have the correct approach to building a roster.  Things should get exciting 2023 season.

I'm good with 6 wins or less this year. I'm looking for a top-10 pick in 2023. That is where we will start trending up.

Jean Delance plays so far over his feet he'll be tossed around like a rag doll in the NFL.

I like Sanborn he was one of my late options to fill the SLB role.

Derick Bush has some promising aspects to his game:

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EaYhNIzWtn0

Cyrus Holder struggles to get separation from LBs.. won't go anywhere in the NFL.  Same for Luke Little.  I'm not sure why we're wasting time on these guys.  I'm not sure why I'm wasting my time on them other than to understand what Poles is trying to do.  At this point with so many meh players out of small schools I feel like he's just throwing as many darts as possible hoping to hit on one or two.

Chase Allen out of Iowa State is more of a move TE since I've watched him quite a bit.  Nothing special athletically but like Sanborn he's someone worth bringing in the building as a possible depth player.

They need 90s players for camp. I assume most will be gone by the first cut.

I also like Sanborn and would love to see him make the final 53.

I just listened to Poles' press conference and that is exactly what they plan to do with Velus.  He even compared him to Deebo... in terms of versatility and ability to line up in the backfield.  He is the chess piece in the same way Cordarrelle Patterson was supposed to be, except he has much better hands, even down to special teams returner and gunner.   He's physical as a runner too.  Let's hope this time around we have an OC and HC who know how to play chess.  I thought he was more of a Day 3 option but I do recognize that a guy like this frees up a special teams roster spot which is pretty valuable, both on the 53 and on game day.  There is a good interview with him on his draft page at NFL.com and he seems like a player who will represent the Bears very well.

    https://www.nfl.com/prospects/velus-jones/32004a4f-4e82-6251-6347-ca9076d159e9

Brisker is the anti-Eddie Jackson safety.  This is a guy who runs to contact, works through the trash (or as Velus calls it ...the smoke) to find the ball.  He can hit.  He's versatile enough to handle some single-high safety looks but is more of a smart SS type.  He's still young and has room to learn but he makes our defense better and that will be noticeable early on once he gets comfortable with the the defense.

Gordon I like a lot.  Whether he is outside or inside at NB he's a very good athlete.  Just the fact he has played both roles well demonstrates that.   He's a physical tackler too.  I never looked at him pre-draft because I never thought he'd be there, and of course I fully expected we'd go WR/Oline.

I fully expected to go into this season still in the midst of a DB crisis.  I think that's over.  I'm not happy with the way the draft turned out with all the Oline going early but I'm happy with the picks and we filled some huge needs.  My goal was to come out of the draft with at least 2 starters for 2022, hopefully 3, and we drafted 2 on defense.

Poles was left a shit show to clean up. He said last night that you can't fix this overnight. It is going to take time. We need to give him that.

Why would KC move up to 39?  Who is their target?

Good question. Just a hypothetical trade.

Also, noticed I missed pick 148 so I will say 148 Melton and 150 Mike Rose.

    Peace

  16. My mock draft (based on player rankings in The Beast from Dane Brugler)

    - Trade 39 to KC for 50 and 62

    - Pick 48  - Perrion Winfrey (DT, Oklahoma) or Tyler Smith (OT, Tulsa)

    - Pick 50 -  Kyler Gordon (CB, Washington) or Christian Watson (WR, NDSU)

    - Pick 62 - Jalen Tolbert (WR, South Alabama) or Cam Taylor-Britt (CB, Nebraska)

    - Pick 71 -  Cole Strange (OC/G, Tennessee Chattanooga) or Tyler Parham (OC/G, Memphis)

    - Pick 150 - Bo Melton (WR, Rutgers) or Mike Rose (LB, Iowa State)

Pick 186 - Smoke Monday (S, Auburn) or Jack Sanborn (LB, Wisconsin)

Trade Nick Foles to Jacksonville for pick 222 (Foles has a $4 million salary for this year - may have to eat part of it)

Pick 222 - Vederian Love (OT, Illinois)

    Peace
