But if you think Caleb is a bust for some reason, thats an opinion for sure. But the statistical argument you tried to make is just incorrect. Tell me why you dont like Caleb, and thats cool. I might disagree but i cant predict the future.

But I can say the statistical argument you were making was wrong though - even if Caleb is a bust the stats still say he is a better chance at being great than a 2nd rounder would.

I never said that I think Caleb is a bust? In fact I clearly stated that I will support whichever way Poles goes on QB.

I’m not changing my position on the narrative “Bears must trade Fields” before drafting a top QB prospect because they don’t.  Bears still have a 5th year option to decide on by May 24th and that’s it!  “Iron sharpens Iron” and when Poles says he wants to do right by Justin there is so much to potentially take from that statement.

For some it could mean find a good trade partner and landing spot for Fields. However, has anyone considered maybe Poles is referring to how he gutted the team right away which was both necessary and the right thing!  However that also created a bad situation for Justin to succeed. Maybe Poles is actually dedicated to providing those roster upgrades now so that he can give Justin a fair evaluation before deciding his fate???

I’ve always stated the Bears have failed their past QBs by not providing enough weapons or protection and offense scheme built for them to succeed.  Seems to me that Poles is trying to rectify these past atrocities!

Exactly What statistical analysis am I wrong on? Don’t think I even provided one?

PHX, When I say “let it go” I’m referring to your relentless “trolling” when someone post something that goes against your “all in” approach on Williams.

I think the fact we have only 4 draft picks indicates we're trading both 1+9. I think #1 could lead to another trade back. If there's 3 trade backs, that would give us 2 ones, 3 twos, and an extra .3 rd. That would be 8 in the top 100 plus extra picks next year.

We could still get a WR and Edge in the top 15. In the second  a center, OL and 3T. A QB prospect and S? The possibilities are endless. Plus 3 1s and 3 2s next year. Sign Allen for one more year and have a 2 year window to make a SB run. With all the extra picks you can let the big contracts expire and keep drafting for the future.

I think Poles should keep this trading back strategy with sorry abysmal teams for the next 3-4 years so that the team is in position to take QB Arch Manning when he is eligible! 🤣🤤

the problem is that its a recipe for mediocrity.

youre saying instead of swinging for a big win, you want to swing a bunch of smaller times, some will miss and some will hit - so you have a better chance of not losing it all, but you also have a lesser chance of winning big.

It's like buying every lottery ticket, you cant lose, but you spent so much to buy them all that you dont win either.

When you take all the risk out, you end up with a more likely middle outcome.

We have a shot at a top QB, which is everything int he NFL, and because it's not a 100% shot, you want to buy insurance and lose a chance at winning.

So the question is, in the NFL, is it better to reliably go 9-8, or is it better to try to win a superbowl?

    Come on PHX;

Let it go already..  We get the point that you think Caleb Williams is the next Mahomes by your anointment.

Most of us here will support whomever lines up under center for the Bears at QB.  Truth, the last Bears QB I’ve been excited for prior to Justin was Jay Cutler.  The Bears have been in shambles since they lost but should have won the Superbowl against the Colts in Miami.

Many of us are trying to be quietly and patiently optimistic here. If Poles draft Caleb so be it, but I stand by my statement that the Bears don’t have to trade Fields away even if the plan is to draft another QB this year.

I’d be fine with Mayes, Nix, McCarthy or Williams whichever way Poles decides is best for building a perennial winner in Chicago!

RYAN POLES is not Ryan PACE and may be the best GM Bears had since Jim Finks!

Ryan PACE swung for the fences and we see how that turned out!!! Mitchell freaking Trubisky!

What if Pace traded down he still could have taken Mitch but would have likely landed several other good players still with the team!

At this point, we all have dug into our positions and not going to change until either Poles makes a move and trade Fields or until Draft day 2024!

  5. Interesting and unexpected move - Ryan Poles keeps adding talent.  Also, interesting fact is that Keenan Allen wears number 13; the same number Caleb Williams wore in college at both USC and OU.

Is Poles sending a message or playing a psychological test with Caleb; waiting to see how he reacts to the news the Bears just added a veteran pro bowler WR that happens to also wears #13?

    Things are getting very interesting?

In the current “Super Bowl era” 24 QBs have been selected #1 overall.  Of those 7 have played in and won a Super Bowl.  Of the 58 Super Bowls played so far those 7 (~12%) have contributed to 15 Super Bowl wins (~26%).  Do you really think Williams is good enough to be in that top 25% of all QBs ever picked?  If so, how?  Where does he rate against those other 7 that makes you so convinced he’s that “elite”?

Others have recently commented on your dismissal of those of us who are still in the Fields camp. And frankly I’m growing tired of it.  You continuously volley covert commentary like calling out Fields’ supporters as “crazy” (above) or “delusional” and it’s gotten old.   If you want to stick to pure facts and compare I’m good with it. Save the pettiness for somewhere else.

So far I’ve seen nothing (on paper) that convinces me that Williams is the next best thing.   For me the stats that Fields left collegiately were better than Williams. His overall record far outpaced Williams against much better competition to include the college playoffs . When he faced adversity, both physically (vs clemson 2021) and otherwise (COVID Big 10) he didn’t wither on the vine.  Save the “he’s a great guy and terrific athlete” BS because that’s lazy. Williams’ highlight films and NFL prospectus (“takes too many sacks” and is ‘fantastic at improvisation’) point to a younger Justin.  Yet when Justin does it, he’s a failure.  To tell me Williams is better, collegiately, is just simply not true. And to compare him to how well he’ll measure up to Fields professionally is skeptical at best.

I agree Alaskan….  The truth is generational talent can be found anywhere in the draft.  If the label of “Generational Talent” goads anther GM under pressure to save his job and not the franchise then a brilliant mind will use that to his advantage and exploit it for a “generational haul” of draft capital!

How could anyone fault Poles if he were to do something like this? I mean when Bellichick traded back he was considered “genius”!

    IMG_1337.png

  7. I agree Pix and certainly don’t have the time to research any of these prospects more than the Bears experts do.  If they feel CW is the long term answer, fine.  But if they do the reverse of what Ryan Pace did with Mitch, move down a few spots, grab MHJr as well as a QB like Bo Nix or JJ McCarthy then I‘m good with that also.  I think we all agree we have not had a GM as bright as Poles probably since the GM that built the ‘85 roster! Its truly an exciting time for this franchise and fans.

lol yes! there is nothing immoral about Justin Fields!

I like the kid, I really do. He is an incredible athlete, but his skills dont really add up to a QB position. Im serious when I say he reminds me of Hester. In 2022 he was a threat to score any time he touched the ball. His open field running is legendary status.

But then two things happened - one is the Bears obviously told him not to make any moves on defenders in the open field, and to slide to avoid injury - which makes sense but took away his greatest strength. and two is that defenses realized he wouldnt surgically punish them if they adjusted their defensive front to contain his running. In fact they learned how to push his mental buttons to get him to run right into their linemen.

And so he cant really ever succeed as an NFL QB. He'd have to punish teams with anticipatory timing throws across the middle before hed get an honest defensive front and be able to run again.

I mean, he will break off more highlights, but he wont be able to consistently move chains and score that way. So he's finished.

But he's not a bad guy. He's an incredible athlete, a hard worker and a hell of a nice person. A good leader too.

He just had this incredible flash of open field ability that made everyone fall in love with him, but it's not enough to attack NFL defenses that adjust to it without a complementary on time passing skill.

You could be the best rock thrower in rock paper scissors, but if you dont have a scissors counter move, your opponent learns to always play paper and beat your rock, and if you cant burn them with scissors, youre done. No matter how well you throw that rock.

Today’s NFL is a multi-billion dollar business. We all see that QBs are rushed in quickly often to both the organizations and payers detriment.

Unfortunately, the Bears have been light years behind in both identifying and developing QBs.  Even when they get one with talent, they historically can’t protect him, give him ample weapons and or fail to develop a modern offensive scheme.  Jay Cutler has been this Franchise’s greatest modern QB up until this point and everything I just stated is fact.

When Chicago drafted Fields I honestly did not know much about him but was just hoping they wouldn’t screw him up (i.e. Rex Grossman) especially since we just got burned by Pace and his stupid trade up for Trubisky…. Mitch was a good kid and athlete but just never had the “it factor” and never should have been 1st round pick.  Pace was inexperienced and so was Mitch.  When Fields started dropping in the draft, Pace trade up with NY out of desperation thinking he could reset the clock which fortunately never happened.  However, the Bears organization once again proved to be inept at everything.  Who knows where Justin Fields could have been developmentally wise had he gone to a great organization?  We all see he has some amazing talents at the QB position yet there are some undeniable weaknesses that hold him back and may not even be entirely his fault.  Look Justin is a great kid and he alone made the 2022 season watchable and there is nothing more than I would like to see him succeed but whether it’s fair or not, most likely will not be here as both timing (when drafted) and time are not on his side.

Unfortunately, Justin Fields may be closer to Tim Tebow than Patrick Mahomes.  Both are great guys and extremely athletic but the teams that drafted them were a complete disaster.  If it doesn’t work out here with the Bears, I hope he finds a team that can develop him.

One thing’s for sure, having the 1st overall pick in the draft two years in a row beats the hell out of picking between 12-20 for the past two decades which is the quintessential definition of mediocrity!

We would not be in this position if the Bears didn’t finally do something aggressive and smart:  Fired both Pace and Nagy with time left on their contracts.  I say smart because they finally may have got lucky to hire someone as smart as Ryan Poles whom has done a very good job at deconstructing and then constructing this roster over the past two years.

I really do see the big picture and how important this offseason and draft will be on this organization for the next decade or two.

There are a few very intriguing QB prospects coming out this year and are all in play with our two first round picks this year. Likewise, it’s a really deep WR and Offensive Tackle draft.  What should Ryan Poles do?  Not an easy decision because of time; remember what I said about the NFL being a mult-billon dollar business, well to often time is not luxury in the modern game for those entrusted to build a roster and win a championship.

Sox fans only need to look at what was supposed to be a successful rebuild only for it to blow up in our faces.

So, if time isn’t a factor, then the prudent GM trades back and loads the roster with more talent before being “all in” to win.  Something the Sox recently failed at.

However, we all know that time is a factor and the reality is, if there is a generational talent at QB then you have to take your swing and hopefully you knock it out of the park!

I’m admittedly in the camp that likes Justin Fields enough to keep him this season, but also wanting Poles to draft a QB this year as well as doing some trading back to continue to build out this roster.

Everyone seems to have the opinion that Poles must dump Justin  to draft a QB in round one this year?  Why not hedge your bets and do both after all, iron sharpens iron!

    Go Bears!!!

I don’t disagree and you’re absolutely right.  Remember when Muhsin Mohammed said about the Bears’ “ it’s where receivers go to die.” Well he was wrong; it’s literally where QB’s go to die!

Like I said to Adam’s reply; I didn’t even consider the salary cap when thinking about that scenario.

When Jerry Angelo traded for Cutler; they never addressed the OL and eventually got him BMarsh which didn’t matter as Jay was running for his life when he wasn’t being sacked.

This organization is also responsible for Rex Grossman becoming bad Rex”

When Rex began with the Bears he seemed decisive, accurate and was pretty solid.  Then as the sacks started piling up he was mentally and physically done.  I bet he still has nightmares after being retired for so long.

Parker, I have seen this scenario discussed on the socials. I would say the thought of it has legs, but in reality, it would be impossible from a cap perspective. A Herbert trade would cost the Chargers $108M on this year's cap when they are already $46M OVER the cap right now. So that move would make them $136M over the cap lol. They would have to cut and trade about 8 starters and only sign vet minimum guys for 3/4 of their roster. The rookie QB would end up like David Carr and have CTE by Week 3.

The only QBs that might work in that type of scenario would be someone with a contract thru 25 or 26: Tua, Lawrence, Prescott, Geno, Purdy, or Jimmy G. Would you trade the #1 for any of those guys? I don't think so. However, do you want another crazy one? Trade Fields for Geno, trade down from #1, add a future 1st or two, and draft a top flight WR.

Thanks Adam, I didn’t even consider the Salary Cap in that scenari.  I guess trades are more complicated then doing them on Madden ‘94 😆

  11. Going back in time; When the Bears hired Matt Nagy I was hoping they would have went in an entirely different direction and hired Kyle Shanahan.  Prior to all that the Bears failed once again in 2013 by not hiring Andy Reid and instead brought in Mark Trestman.

The reason why I bring this up now is not the proverbial hindsight 20/20 but to actually point out how much improvement the Bears have at both President and General Manager positions.  Crazy what happens when you hire smart football people to run your organization!

This is a huge offseason for the Bears and the decisions made in 2024 will be make or break the organization for the next several decades.

I’m intrigued with what Poles and company have done thus far with this rebuild and remain cautiously optimistic as the OC / DC positions are sorted out so they can prepare for the draft and free agency.

With all that stated I want someone from the Shanahan/Kubiak/McVey coaching tree.

I just read on NFL.com that Ron Rivera wants to return to the sidelines as a DC. I'd love to see him return to Chicago.

Ron Rivera would be great because when he was last here under Lovie, he wasn’t afraid to be aggressive which caused a rift with Smiths’ defensive philosophy/ tendencies to bend don’t break scheme.  Which is what worries a little bit with Flus’s take on the Tampa 2.

  13. This is an unlikely scenario but I’m an out of the box thinker!

We know that teams are getting more and more impatient every year.  Oakland fired Hurricane Josh McDaniels less than 2 years in but they should have never hired him in the first place as he was a disaster in Denver; then jilted the Colts.  I never understood why Aaron Rodgers chose to go to the AFC which is an absolute Gauntlet to make it to the SB having to go through all those talented teams with stud QBs Patrick Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Burrow et ol!

With this stated premise could a team like the LA Charges decide to do a reset now knowing that they are pretty far behind KC, Buffalo, Cincy, Baltimore etc that they would consider trading Justin Herbert to the Bears for the number 1 pick in this years Draft?  The Rams and Lions kinda of did this a few years ago and it seemed to be a win win for both organizations. Rams won the superbowl two years ago and the Lions are advancing to the NFC championship game this year.

If I’m Ryan Poles I’m leaving no stone unturned.  Imagine pulling off a trade like this then flipping Fields to a team like Pittsburgh or Atlanta?

Trade the house. Stockpile picks. Build the OL. Add a WR.

    And then draft Nix.

He’s got an above average ability in every passing category. Great arm and pocket presence, excellent at reading the defense, has a pedigree, pretty mobile, short delivery, and great footwork.

I’m glad you brought up Nix because I don’t watch hardly any College football and was wondering about him. Bo Nix’s stats are incredible but read a few draft reports stating he doesn’t have a good arm?  He also seems to be very mobile.

He seems like a perfect prospect to grab this year to push Fields to become great or next QB we BEARS Fans used to know!

  15. I understand where you’re coming from and not trying to be critical but we got burned before with guys like Trubisky going too high with limited starting experience in college. To me that is more of a red flag.

Nix and Penix at least have more game reps and experience so they should at least have a higher floor as pros?  Now I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have time to watch college football and always have to play catchup with researching before the draft each year.

I think I like Nix more as he may be more mobile than Penix but would not ask nor expect either to start day 1 by the team that drafts them.

If either were drafted by the Bears in rounds 2-3 to be developed behind Fields I’d have no problem.  Remember Kurt Warner came out of the arena league and won superbowls.  How did Green Gay get so good at picking QBs; well they pick them regularly then develop them behind a veteran. Some pan out, some don’t and some are used to be a future trade asset.

  16. Alaskan,  why does it concern you that a QB stays and plays 5-6 years seniors?  Everyone knows that college is the true minor leagues for the NFL long before the NIL was a thing!

We all knew the Bears gambled on Trubisky and his limited body of work as a starter in College.

Penix and Nix have both experienced starting QBs for two different colleges and they both improved through using all their eligibility to hone their kraft.

Why does everyone assume we need to move on from Fields?  Sure he has been inconsistent but who wouldn’t be with the OL group?  Best to hedge your bet and keep JF1 and finishing building out the offense.  Tired of being beat by Green Bay!

I’m good with slight trade back with the first pick and load up on OL and add a QB like Nix to develop.
