Well said PB!  Welcome back to the fray. Good to “see” you again.

Thanks Alaskan!  Crazy coincidence but that was my 500th post and not sure how long I’ve been sitting on #499 but it was cool that the website sent me a notification about it.

I also hope the Bears get it right on the new stadium.  I’m worried we will end up with Comiskey Park II!

  2. I’m good with Picking up Fields 5th year option but that doesn’t mean that they don’t take a QB this year.

I really want MHJr with the first pick then trade back and fill roster with more talent. Team needs: QB, OL, Edge, WR, DT, S, TE

Here’s a draft that covers most of these needs:

  3. Sorry for the long post but it’s been a while since I’ve participated on the board.

Organizationally, the Bears are improving and I’m cautiously optimistic and want to see what Kevin Warren and Ryan Poles can do over the next few years together.  I’m undecided on Flus but leaning towards letting him go.  I do appreciate that his players seem to respect him and demands a play hard culture. We can all agree that this team is improving but at the same time it’s really unacceptable to loose leads in the 4th quarter like the Cleveland , 1st Detroit and the Denver games!

The truth is that our Bears have been run awfully for decades. Pace’s regime overall did a poor job evaluating talent and took too much risk in the draft and all that did was leave the cupboard barren and bad cap position at the end of his tenure. Sure he had a few nice players here and there but his best draft was probably his last where he finally took some OL and got Fields.

Enter Ryan Poles, instead of trading away draft picks he moved back and traded vets to acquire more draft picks.  He overhauled this roster and created financial flexibility fairly quickly.  Knowing that you can’t fix a team in one trade or draft class he has done a solid job being creative with his moves and found some free agent bargains along the way. I love the DJ Moore & Montez Sweat trades! Yet people will knock him for the Claypoo trade but that guy turned out to be a piece of poo and Poles got rid of him for not meeting expectations.  I think we all agree it was a good attempt to address a WR need for the offense but it didn’t work out.

Last year was year 1 of the rebuild. Poles began doing what needed to be done and that was getting out from under performing veteran expensive contracts. Mack was declining and he took advantage of Quinn’s great season and moved on from both.

Since before Angelo the Bears disproportionally spent more money and draft picks on defense and that created a gross positional and financial imbalance across the roster.  The NFL game has changed over the past 20 years to be a more offensive oriented league and the Bears simply never adjusted to the modern game.

With that said I really like Ryan Poles philosophy regarding rebuilding with emphasis on the trenches and building through the draft along with key trades and free agents.  While it’s a work in progress we are now seeing better strategic balancing of the roster.

2022 was a very difficult season to endure as a fan but the few players that made the Bears watchable was Justin Fields and Cole Kmet on offensive Jaylon Johnson Defensively and finally finding a kicker we can count on since Robbie left!

What’s the next step for the Bears as as a franchise?  Everybody and the media seems to think the Bears are at a major crossroads and need to make a decision on QB Justin Fields soon.  The reality is they are ending year two of their rebuild. IMHO, Justin has enough talent and made enough progress through season two as a starter to have his 5th year option picked up. The QB room is finally respectable and we have fans and talking heads wanting to blow it all up for what exactly?  Do I even need to rattle some names on the dreaded list of former QBs?  Here are some that will make you cringe: Jonathan Quinn, Mike Glennon and Drew Hutchinson?  Now don’t you love you some Justin Fields?

What would a prudent President and GM do? They would hedge their bets and keep adding talent to the roster. Think Rams when they had Trent Green and Kurt Warner?  It’s not an all or nothing situation with Fields now so why force yourself into a worse position?

How did Green Bay become to own the Chicago Bears for the last 20 years?  Hint: Majkowski, Favre, Rodgers, Love ? (TBD). How about some of the QB’s they drafted and traded away later? Remember guys like Mark Brunell and Matt Hasslebeck who went on to be pretty good starters in the league. In fact the Packers regularly draft qbs something the Bears rarely do or don’t do well.

Ryan Poles has tactically positioned the Bears in the upcoming draft (picks 1 & 5 overall) to potentially make some generational moves to set up the future success of the franchise.

We should all be asking what is the prudent and wise decisions that will make the Chicago Bears perennial winners?

It’s hard to win when you’re in the midst of a complete rebuild. It is also difficult to win when your team is devoid draft picks, talent and quality coaching to develop and put players is position to succeed.

I want to see a great football culture built here and have great football people and men running our beloved Bears franchise!

Will Poles and Warren keep building the coaching culture or will they lure a proven coach like Jim Harbaugh to come in and take over?  Is Flus worth keeping on as DC?

Is it worth having roster flexibility and continuity by exercising Fields 5th year option.  Either way you can’t go wrong drafting Marvin Harrison Jr at  #1 and then trading #5 back to acquire more picks and maybe getting a QB like Bo Nix in round 2-3?

So many smart ways to keep building this team so that 2024 they can make a legit run at winning the division and playoff run.

  4. Tolbert off to the cowboys.  something I was worried about with reverting back to the Tampa2, and admittedly I’m probably overreacting here, but it just feels like Lovie Smith still having too much influence on the draft.  Only difference though, is no small school DB’s yet.

  5. The Kyler pick makes sense just not who or when I expected a CB.  This my allow them to move Thomas Graham inside to slot CB.  Pass defense just got a lot better with one pick.

Experience and physical traits matter and not just a little.  He's proven to be a good player, in college, on the right side.  We didn't trade up for to be a project.  Remember, we were the only scouting dept in the entire NFL to have him rated as an LT.

This why I'm hoping for him to be a stud.  The length is primarily for speed rushers, like Quinn, who uses his quickness, length and hip dip to get around the back.  Sometimes those extra inches are the difference in whether your opponent gets his hands on you or not.  Unless you are Tua, the LT matters for the QB.  Blindside hits are a turnover or injury waiting to happen.

My only question on Tevin Jenkins was his health last year. I love his attitude and think he is a beast!  With a little more technical refinement and experience he will be a LT the Bears haven’t had in a long while.  If Borom ends up kicking inside to G and can become a swing tackle at worst case then I’m okay with that too.

Last Year Pace finally addressed the draft the right way, QB and 2 OL.  As an organization the Bears have alway managed to neglect these positions early in the draft.  Hopefully at least Jenkins and Fields go in the be perennial All Pros.

Three dudes from Baylor, a Running Back (even if it is Bama), and three small schools (NDSU, Montana St., and Tulsa) players in the first three picks? No thanks.

Brian Urlacher came from The University of New Mexico via Lovington High School in Lovington, New Mexico; with less than 650 students.

Just saying ;  ). Although I get your point and certainly understand the Bears past GMs track record in this aforementioned talent pool.

We are so accustomed to a flurry of moves by Pace over the last few years that this patience is not normal for us.  However, I like the approach. Rarely do teams that "win" free agency actually win when real football starts.

What is funny to me is if you look at the biggest moves of the offseason, none of those teams are in the top 5 for Super Bowl odds after the moves:

    1. Denver for Wilson, still not a top 5 team
    2. Chargers for Mack, still not a top 5 team
    3. Raiders for Adams, still not a top 5 team
    4. Miami for Hill, still not a top 5 team
    5. Cleveland for Watson, still not a top 5 team
    6. Indy for Ryan, still not a top 5 team

Most of those moves have massive contracts, guaranteed money, and will hamstring the cap eventually. The Chargers and Dolphins, from the group, have the best shot with QBs on rookie deals.

For the Bears, add one more OT and WR in FA and the offense is already better than last year. Add a couple more in the draft, and there could be a bigger than expected improvement.

The defense's drop-off is overrated because we lost some big names, but not really a lot of snaps. Flus and Williams did more with less in Indy.

Bears already are winning the off-season by firing Pace and Nagy.  I love the direction Poles and Cunningham are taking. I’ve always admired organizations like the  Ravens, Steelers and more recently the Chiefs as they seem to always draft and develop well.  Poles is obviously from the Chiefs organization and Cunningham has experience in the Ravens and Eagles organization.  Looking forward to the Bears refresh 2022!

  9. Every year I find myself cramming for the draft since I don’t have time to watch much college football.  I expect Poles to make some additional trades and stockpile draft picks.  So many intriguing players with speed in this years draft class which I made a primary focus as it aligns with Poles’ three player attribute pillars of Fast, violent and nasty!

Overall, I'm liking Poles' discipline. The free agents are all fillers, he's not taking anyone long term.

I still think that if he was a more seasoned GM, he would have known about Ogunjobi's injury status, maybe thru contacts, maybe because the agent respected / feared him more.

But I know there will be some growing pains with any new first time GM, and overall, while our team isnt going to be that good this year, I am on board with what he's doing.

Patience and building thru the draft are exactly what we need after this endless cycle of new GMs trying to add a few pieces to a core that really doesnt exist, and getting us trapped in cap and draft hell while huge holes still exist on the roster (like the offensive line!)

Why does everyone assume Poles didn’t know about Ogunjobi’s injury which kept him from playing in the playoffs? Poles took a shot because of his talent and it was contingent on passing a physical which he did not.  Why is everyone thinking this was a mistake by GM Ryan Poles?

it would only have been a mistake if the contract offer did not  require the player to pass a physical y the Bears medical staff.

It is a different process and approach than we're used to.  It's hard watching all the movement in FA and seeing us make minor moves, Poles is focused on doing things right rather than doing things fast.  Pace more than Emery and Angelo was willing to sacrifice the future to patch the present and that catches up with you especially if the patches you are over paying for only mask issue or just outright do little to help.  I don't see Poles overpaying for a has been in Graham, selling the farm to move up 1 spot in the draft to take a QB likely would have been there at your spot, selling the farm for a disgruntled talented QB with character issues (Angelo), and the list goes on.  Pace was the type to have conviction about a move which can be good but it tended to be blind conviction that he would commit or overcommit whatever resources necessary to make a move happen.  He would lose sight of whether that move reaches the point where it's not worth it and you need to let it go and change course.  Sorta like having a plan in mind and not really having a pivot in mind if that plan doesn't work out.  In the past we've compounded poor drafting especially at the top end of our drafts by overpaying to cover for those mistakes.  It's why we're in the cap situation and the draft capital situation we are now, with a team that's not close to being a real contender.  Fixing this the right way will not be an overnight fix, it will take time.  If Poles is able to rebuild from the trenches out and can build the Bears back to being an annual contender it'll take patience from us as fans to trust the process and give him a chance to do what needs to be done.

We're just now trying to do the reset/rebuild that should have started last offseason.  Poles has his work cut out for him.  There are a lot of unknowns.  We haven't seen Poles run a draft, we haven't seen Poles run a full offseason, we haven't seen him work in season.  First time GM, first time HC, OC, etc.  Thus far he has stuck to his overall stated plan to rebuild our roster.  It's a positive change that he stuck by what he said he'd do and didn't follow through on the signing after the failed physical.  It's an unfortunate situation where you and your staff targeted someone early in FA but made the hard right decision to not go forward, for the greater good of the team.  He also seems more interested in getting feedback and advice from others.  Doesn't seem to suffer from "smartest man in the room" syndrome.

Angelo made the right call trading for Jay Cutler.  He failed miserably at protecting Jay with a good online and providing offensive weapons to throw to outside of B. Marshall.

  12. This mock pretty much is a no stone unturned approach. Probably a bit unrealistic but here is what multi trades could net. For the most part these guys all have incredible speed and length.  Can they ball out?  If I knew that I’d be the Bears GM lol!

I liked all your picks but the RB that high was a bad choice. If we got those WRs that would be great. Speed with Watson and Grey,, Talbot would be the possession guy. Beavers and Cheap could start as rookies. Zack Tom was the only OL, it would have been better with 2, Should have taken another OL with the RB choice.

Stinger,  the way the draft fell with the trade backs Robinson was to good of value to pass on him and OT capable of starting just wasn’t there.  My thought process was to get a big Derrick Henry type RB that can actually complement Monty and of course be a goal line beast.  Additionally,  Tom would be the starting Center and the Bears would bring in a vet LT like Cam Robinson.

  14. With the Mack Trade, It’s clear now that Poles will be retooling this roster and is seeking both draft capital and cap flexibility.

Even if Poles signs a veteran WR like A. Cooper, more talent is needed. This draft is supposedly deep with WRs and LBs and interior lineman.   I expect a free agent OT to sure up the LOT and then move Jenkins to RT.  In this mock I addressed many of the needs. Tom is listed as a OT but player there out of necessity and played Center prior to that. With the reverting back to the Tampa 4:3 defense, I see the Bears targeting bigger CB, speed at LB and versatile safeties like what Lovie had.
