I agree with the bolded part in theory. But I suspect our suspect safeties would get burned mightily by semi-competent WRs on the other side. Not to mention the fact that the Bears' run defense couldn't possibly survive with the added liability of always being one man short in run support. The idea is great in theory, but I'm sure that it would eventually lead to A] fouls, or B] the D getting toasted

You misunderstand me. The jam is not against the rules. But there is verbiage in the rule book that prohibits the DB from jamming for not just being beyond the chuck rule, but for the situation in which a WR is no longer conceivably a blocker. When that transition happens, the DBs just can't keep riding the guy. If they do, they get an illegal use of hands call. This is not exactly the rule book's wording, but a dumbed down version of rules for fans that the NFL puts together: http://www.nfl.com/rulebook/useofhands "Exception: An eligible receiver is considered to be an obstructing opponent ONLY to a point five yards beyond the line of scrimmage unless the player who receives the snap clearly demonstrates no further intention to pass the ball. Within this five-yard zone, a defensive player may chuck an eligible player in front of him. A defensive player is allowed to maintain continuous and unbroken contact within the five-yard zone until a point when the receiver is even with the defender. The defensive player cannot use his hands or arms to push from behind, hang onto, or encircle an eligible receiver in a manner that restricts movement as the play develops. Beyond this five-yard limitation, a defender may use his hands or arms ONLY to defend or protect himself against impending contact caused by a receiver. In such reaction, the defender may not contact a receiver who attempts to take a path to evade him. " Trust me, this 2-on-1 would start to get called really quickly if the WR got to a point where he couldn't release at all off the line. The minute there was even the slightest hint of a WR being even with the DB, and contact continued, flags would fly. The NFL is an offense-driven league, and they will protect that philosophy.

Wow. Great article. There is very little to argue with.
-
What an irresponsible article. The writer is full of shit if he doesn't mention the OL once as the cause for a switch from pass-focus to run-focus. I'm quite sure if the OL was keeping Jay Cutler upright, and there were stats being put up as a result, Martz would not have needed to include more running, much less actually done it.
-
Five, Carolina has one of the worst rush defenses in the NFL. Forte blowing up was absolutely no surprise. Otherwise, great list. It's exactly why the OL got minimal credit after they dump-trucked a JV defense.
-
I'll tell you why...and it's an obvious one. Penalties. First and foremost, once the receiver establishes himself as a receiver and not as a blocker, the contact allowed is minimal. I'm not talking about the 5 chuck that the NFL frequently mentions. I'm talking about illegal use of hands, and the fact that a DB is not allowed to ride a WR for an extended period of time. There is verbiage in the NFL rule book that says something about this scenario. But let's say the DBs don't get called for illegal use of hands. Up next, holding. A DB must allow a WR the attempt to begin his route and become a WR. If they do not, there is almost a certainty that holding will get called. But let's say they don't call that one either. The Lions solve this one pretty easily. They throw it over there anyway. With all the rough-housing and hand fighting going on, there is a guarantee that the Bears' DBs will be contacting Megatron while the ball is in the air. And defensive contact + ball in the air = defensive pass interference. The idea is good, but it's not feasible. If it were, every team in the league would already be doing it. They don't because of the fouls they would certainly get.

What about Lebron James? http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d822d...n=Facebook_news (Only partially serious)
-
No doubt. We know the Bears are fond of using players out of position. Particularly on the OL where an OG is C, a OT is OG, a C is OG, and a guy who should be working as a Walmart shelf-stocker as a key backup and occasional starter.

Is Marion Barber the new Afroninja?

The players need to execute better.

Great thought. It didn't cross my mind either. When I saw the thread title I thought you were referring to Forte getting the long run to seal the deal.
-
Funny you bring that up. My admin privileges were not taken away...I volunteered to give them up on the old board. Why? Because someone cried about me doing precisely what balta is talking about: Cleaning up a message board by being an admin. Someone posted a comment with political content; I edited it. I didn't take away any of the football content, but there were still cries of tyrant, fascist, freedom of speech, etc. All wrong. When we transitioned to this board, the question never came up. And just like normal, you either lie or fabricate information. It most certainly started on your end...don't make me look it up and destroy what little credibility you have, because deep down you know the truth.
-
I hope you're right with the prediction, but what I could see happening just as easily is the New Orleans game redux.
-
I'm happy for Forte, because he had such a great day. The next couple opponents are going to load up the box with 11 and a few coaches, forcing the Bears to pass. And, unfortunately, pass protect.
-
No. I call your posts idiotic. I call your posts ignorant. Because, quite frankly, they often are. Admins: If you'd care to do the research - it goes back a ways - the elevation of back-and-forth began on the other end. I called it out when it happened.
-
Two way street, bub. You're allowed to do the same thing, and have. But you just don't like it when I call you out on constant waffling and lies. For instance, you lie when you say "...and I haven't even said anything about him today..." because we ALL know the multiple posts you had in the beginning of this thread are sarcasm. I wouldn't reply so strongly to you if you didn't post ignorantly so often. We get it; you hate Martz and Cutler and no matter what happens it's somehow their fault. The funny thing isn't that you want the Bears to win - which I truly believe, otherwise you wouldn't spend so much time here - it's that you don't appear to be able to give any credit which contradicts your established bias, much less see things the way most other Bears fans see them (i.e. it's tough for the OC and QB when the OL is the worst in the NFL for two years running and the WRs are average). The more and more I read your posts, the more convinced I am of your relation to either Tice, Angelo, or one of the bums on the OL. I wonder if Omiyale spends offseasons in Arizona?
-
Smart play Forte...stays in bounds. Also, Hester appears to be back. Two good developments.
-
I can already see the tears rolling down az's cheeks.
-
Don't say anything good about Martz or Cutler, az will stomp his feet and hold his breath like a baby who isn't getting their way and can't stand when they're wrong.
-
Sure you did, bub. Mr. "I won't rewind my DVR" from the previous weeks all the sudden goes back and reviews. Everything I said from the previous post was accurate. Was the pocket collapsing? Yes. The initial pressure came in Cutler's face, then he felt backside pressure, then he stepped up and threw it immediately. This is EXACTLY what everyone has been calling for. Hell, EVEN BILLICK SAID THE POCKET WAS COLLAPSING AROUND HIM! I already said the throw was high, but Cutler HAD to throw when he did. Wait any more and you would have thrown a fit like a little baby about Cutler holding the ball. After that, it hit the receiver's hands. Period. Keep going with your Martz and Cutler hate, it just shows your ignorance more and more.
-
Dude. Get serious. The pocket collapsed. For a timing route there may have been enough time, but don't act like Cutler had all day to throw the ball. And then when he did throw it, he had a small window to throw the ball. And on top of all that, it went through the receiver's hands. A bit high? Yes. That's realistic. But it went through the receiver's hands. Fact. Your hatred of all things Martz and Cutler is completely irrational. It blinds you from the truth.
-
Dodged a bullet on that one. If not for a stupid formation penalty on the Panthers - nothing the Bears necessarily did on that situation - the Panthers are either still driving for the TD or ahead with the FG right now.
-
Looks like the Panthers made a defensive change at half. They plan on loading up against the run. Recipe for disaster in the past.

I find it hard to believe there isn't SOMEONE out there better than Omiyale. This guy is easily the worst player in the NFL. When he's in I expect something to go wrong.
