They just released him because he wasn't going to play special teams and Lovie didn't want him taking up a roster spot if he was just going to stand on the sidelines. They probably did him a favor by releasing him so he could catch on with another team because they could have just kept him for some depth, because lord knows Major Wright is going to get injured again at some point this season.
