He is from Illinois and went to school at Illinois, so it would be a homecoming of sorts.

Word is market for G Jeff Allen could hover between $6 million and $7 million per season. Stay tuned.

4 yrs 28M. 1st year cap hit was 14M.

Not too bad, $7M average. Houston is having a day, Osweiler, Miller, and Allen. Their offense is going to be much improved this year. Too bad they won't need to trade up for a QB now, my Mock Challenge is now screwed.

Gotta stay away from that.

Im not sure why the cap hit would be so high unless the team wanted it that way.

To the player a signing bonus is immediate money too, but gets prorated over the life of the contract against the cap, so its no difference to the player. If true, the team must have preferred it that way but it's weird.

I think roster bonuses (or something like that) count only in the year they are given. Teams do it because they have huge cap space and prefer to a) get their player and B) save cap space for a year or two down the road. In the right situation for a rebuilding team I think it's smart because you can get a a few key players and you are leaving room for when you want to re-sign your own players to 2nd contracts a year or two down the road. If the veteran FA doesn't pan out you cut your losses in a couple years and don't have a lot of dead cap space.
