Bears Sign Earl Watford

Quote

A fourth-round pick by the Cardinals in 2013 out of James Madison, Watford started 21 games over the last five seasons and appeared in 43 games. He made nine starts last season and 10 in 2016.

The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Watford is considered best as a guard but can play center and tackle if needed. He’s considered a smart player and a quality backup.

Solid depth moves. Swing lineman who can play tackle, guard or center. Very nice.

A Meh depth signing, nothing spectacular, but fills the void left by Compton.

Scary to see these types of articles popping up when you search for him:

Top 10 Worst Performances of Week 17

Lowest graded player in Week 1

Those are from the 2016-2017 season, so hopefully he can improve.

We are paying Hiestand for a reason, and I have to think he's in on the evaluations of any FA Oline we sign.  Whatever his issues are I would think Harry has some level of confidence he can fix them.

That's about as low as you can pay a veteran in terms of the guarantee, and if he starts a certain number of games, and reaches his goals (assuming they arent super easy to reach) then 2 million isnt so bad either.

Gives Hiestand someone to work with, and the flexibility to go defense in the first round.

I'll bet we sign a similar DE soon.

Bruce Arians says he is a terrific athlete, great on kick coverages, and can catch, so he might be a chess piece at FB or TE too in heavy sets, and tackle eligible situations. But he probably really helps the special teams.
