BENSON TO THE BENGALS

At a time when the Cincinnati Bengals seemed to be the favorite to land 2005 NFL MVP Shaun Alexander, a native of nearby Florence, Kentucky, the Bengals threw the league a curveball on Tuesday, signing tailback Cedric Benson.

 

The team has announced via a press release the addition of Benson. He’ll replace DeDe Dorsey, who has been placed on injured reserve.

 

Benson was the fourth overall pick in the 2005 draft. The Bears dumped him after a lackluster 2007 season as the clear-cut starter — and after two alcohol-related arrests in less than a month. Though a grand jury opted last week not to indict Benson on any of the pending charges, the decision of the Bengals to add a player with a troubled past will only reinforce the team’s standing as a franchise that simply doesn’t care about the perception that more than a few of its players are turds.

 

Hey, but at least those talented-but-flawed players are helping the Bengals win lots of football games.

I really was wishing Detroit was going to sign him, but oh well. Either way, he is going to have a sh*tty team around him.

All the fans were right about Benson's badness, but then again they were wrong b/c they all seemed to want Mike Williams, who...somehow some way, was actually worse.

I wanted to get him too, but none of us wanted him at #4. I was hoping for a trade down and Johnson.

Count me in that group as well. I was never interested in Williams.

I was willing to go 4...I felt as though he was a sure thing. But, I would have much preferred a trade down! And I think it could have happened.

Good place for him.

In hindsight, we should have reached and picked Jamaal Brown. However, that would have been one hell of a reach. I think everyone wanted a trade down, but there was no trade partner.
