Preseason Week 2 Game Thread - Bills at Bears, Fox, SUN, 8-17, 7pm Central

exactly. all we have are indicators, and proof of concept. we'll see how it all holds up against Minnesota, but there is a lot to be happy about coming out of this past weekend I am sure youll agree. There is a way to go, but it looks like we have the right guys to get there. Im not gonna crown anyone until we see it on the field in September, but there are obvious reasons for optimism. I appreciate your pumping the brakes a little here, and I totally agree. But still - this looks like it might be fun. -
Totally agree. The coaching is easy to see now. And Caleb isn't wearing a wristband with plays on it, so I understand it took a while in camp to digest. Its hard to evaluate OL and such agaisnt second stringers, but evaluating making reads and getting the ball out in rhythm is valid no matter who is on defense. The offense looked organized, disciplined and crisp. SO good to see. As to the screen pass he grounded, I also said "good job" out loud even though I was watching it alone. Caleb is clearly maturing, Johnson is clearly the right guy to be our coach - all of that is obvious now. The rest we will take as it comes.

Im not gonna go through every snap again this week, but I did rewatch the 1st quarter, and every rep Braxton had was a good rep. I know he was facing 2nd stringers, so especially when it comes to bull rush, it doesnt prove anything, but a bad rep WOULD prove something, and he didnt have any, so that says something too. If Roushar unlocks Jones in a way he never did before then I am happy to be wrong about him. I've been basing my feelings about the player he's been in the past. I really hope this continues against higher level competition, of course. I am glad the coaches saw him against Buffalo's first string - we didnt get to see that, but they did, so they will know. And, like Kmet, I've always said if they play at a new higher level I havent seen before, then that changes everything. It's hard to project that, but if you see it, then you see it. Im not ready to crown anyone yet LOL but I am glad to see Jones playing well of course. Im a little surprised at what's happened to Trapilo this week, I wonder if it was just a week, or he is truly off of the LT competition for now. I know what the sportswriters have said, but I guess this coming week will say more. All to say, cautiously optimistic about Braxton, I cant say anything bad about his reps this week.

Well put. Thanks.

I accidentally deleted my recording. PHX or Jason will have to do it. The eye test looked really good, but I was watching as a fan.

Detroit actually wanted Goff. The GM is on record way before that trade was made that he was a fan.

I think we do well with the first 15 or so scripted plays but there are a lot of unknowns right now but it seems like BJ has cleaned up most of his fundamentals. I think the scheme will help him a lot as BJ did with Goff in Detroit. Goff was a throw in on the Stafford trade, but BJ got him in a rhythm and you have seen the results. Caleb is more talented that Goff. -
Case got 2.25 mil and we would only save 900,000 if we cut him. I think they find a way to keep him around. Since he has an injury, they may have him on the beginning pup list so we keep him in the fold. You never know when You might need his services. Many teams have run out of healthy QBs in a season before.

I had a moron friend over last night who said "What was that!" when he grounded that ball. And my comment was, that was maturity and good coaching. He did exactly what he should've done in that situation. Given how well Bagent has played, is Case Keenum going to make the team? Also, I need to know from the cap gurus here, how much goes back into the coffers when and if they cut him? I understand he'd there to be a mentor but I want the two best QB's on the active roster every Sunday and the third on as the emergency guy. I'm not sure Case is the second best QB on this team and I'm also not sure if he'll want to be inactive.
-
I hope so. The thing I'm looking at cautiously, is that we played their second string and they didn't throw anything exotic at Caleb. Caleb still has to clean up his footwork and that ball tap he does before throwing. KC is playing their starters this weekend, so we may see more. I'm also interested in seeing the plays after the scripted ones are used. Unfortunately, we won't see that until regular season.

I havent been able to find anything about our injuries last night on X. Anyone have any updates?

My optimism is shining.

If this offensive is going to be high level, there will be more than enough reps to go around for everyone. -
So Braxton started, then Theo took over. Later in the game Kiran played LT. Kiran has been getting badmouthed but the truth is , he has been injured. For what highlights I could see, they all played well. I will refer to Mongo and PHX for a more detailed opinion.

TOP was crazy too...

At least no one can complain about a lack of offense anymore. -530 total yards -357 total passing yards -173 total rushing yards -6.5 yards per play -31 1st downs -8/15 3rd down -82 total plays -38 points Yeah....Ben Johnson is legit. -
Absolutely, doing what he was suppose to do. 6-10 detracts from how well he actually did. He had two throw away's, and Rome dropped one. The scheme will get players open and a better OL keeps Caleb on time and in rhythm. That works against better talented players also.

If the score was the other way around the media would already be putting the Bills in the Super Bowl. We’re not that naive here on this board but that game was a clear sign that this coaching staff is different. So was Caleb. I might have been the only Bears fan that celebrates when Caleb threw the ball in the dirt after Buffalo blew up the RB screen play. It was the first time I can recall him understanding don’t take the negative play and move on to the next play.
-
Like Adam mentioned, if the QB is on time and out in under 2.4 seconds, the pass rush will not get there in time. The key will be the IOL, if they keep the pocket clean , Caleb will excel. Its just 1-2-3, hit the open receiver or throw it away. I can see less than 40 sacks this year if the OL holds up. I dont know who this is (John Middlekrauff) but he's not a Bear pundit , he breaks it down real simple.\
-
Yup. We are going have to keep it that way 80% plus to activate the deep shots and slow crossers. Play action needs to be great...
-
I was concerned that Caleb not playing in week one was a sign that he was behind schedule. I saw no evidence of that yesterday. The D was solid but special teams wasn’t. All three phases need to be there to maximize wins.
-
Yeah, the media circus finally picked up on it. The ball was coming out quick and he was decisive. It doesn't matter if the defense has the best pass rushers, they aren't getting there in 2 seconds unless unblocked.
-
Sunday the 31st works good for me since I would not have to worry about missing it because work goes late. So unless there are any objections, I will set the 31st at 7pm Central for our draft on Wednesday (20th). If you have a conflict, and need a different date/time, please let me know before Wed.
