If Pickens and Dexter take a step forward, DE moves to the first round.

True, I thought about slashing that as DE/DT.  Even with Dexter, Billings, and Pickens they can still use another good player to add to the rotation.  We will find a vet FA to take that role this year.

i agree. we got a starting quality player in the 4th. normally i wouldn't pick one that high but we are getting to the point where our roster is full and a pick this far down ends up on the practice squad or cut especially if they have an eye on some future cuts/free agents.

a punter is a really important part of your defense per se'. if this guy kills it it was worth it this particular year. next year we are fat with picks so something has to give for our roster then.

He will be a starter and possibly be one of the leagues best.  The Bears were one of the worst in punting and now elevated that phase.  A DE/DT or C might not even see the field.

Hard to see the logic there when a punter plays only 5 to 6 plays a game.

I would've went with an Edge like Booker there.

I am not a fan on taking a punter with other needs at DE/DT.  I didn't think they will need to punt with all these weapons too, lol.   Maybe Poles trades back in and gets one.  But, if he is supposed to be one of the best and he can pin them deep, it will help win games.

7 picks left, depending on how the board plays out, there is a chance Poles moves back 10 or so picks (if there is a trade partner). I assume people are going to want to scoop up Franklin or Wilson at WR soon.

Following on here only, but hoping for Bralen Trice DE.

  7. I made a post on FB about the picks and my acquaintances are a bunch of sour pusses.  They don't want to believe the Bears made this great of draft.  Some think this is another Trubisky/Fields song and dance, which sure it can be, but they don't pay close attention to drafts like we do.

I gave them a they better jump on the wagon now because if they jump on late I will revist that post and haunt them.

Great start and still some players we can get round 3.  I will have to follow online tonight since I am going to a concert.

A week or two ago I asked why Poles hasn't declared Caleb will be the first pick in the draft?  This is now the worst kept secret in the NFL especialy after watching his pre-draft press conference when he was talking about Caleb in glowing terms.  After reflecting on that a bit I now believe he's just doing this to give that moment to Caleb.  Caleb has been very clear this has been one of his goals for a long time.  IMO that's a class move by Poles not to steal the spotlight and that moment from him by making the announcement early.

Just knowing he is the pick takes a little of the excitement out of the draft, but then we have pick 9 and the not knowing which redeems the anticipation that you had as a child on Christmas morning. 24 hours and the excitement begins 🍻

  9. Does knowing what the 1st "gift" pick take away some of the anticipation?  I love draft weekend and it became a dedicated part of my life the year the Bears took McCown. What will make my #1 pick day is if the Bears can have Caleb Williams turn in the card for himself.

The noise about the Bears consideringByron Murphy at 9 feels a lot like the noise this time last year about Darnell Wright.

I seen that and as long as he gets a guy that can take over games, I am happy. Or a guy that can shut down someone, like Wright. Dexter in the future should be able to play both interior positions.

That's ridiculous. He is a generational PROSPECT, no one is saying he is a generational NFL QB (yet) he does have an excellent chance to become one, but first he will be a rookie.

Pick your favorite generational QB, they were all rookies, and they didnt own the NFL in their rookie year.

We should expect to see flashes of greatness from Williams this year, and some rookie mistakes too. It's not reasonable to pretend that he's a veteran just because everyone says he is a generational PROSPECT who could likely BECOME a generational NFL QB.

Pick your generational QB; Brady, Mahomes, Montana, Manning etc etc they were all rookies first.

Stroud set expectations to this level.  I believe Caleb can exceed that benchmark because the Bears were basically a 9 win team if the defense held up and the QB didn't fall apart trying to take the team on his back. They have added Keenan Allen, Swift, Bates, and Everett to upgrade the holes, so the offense along with a OC that is not a first timer. Williams will make mistakes, but he should exceed the previous QB.

This anti-Williams fan is finally seeing a different side of Williams, a more mature one that fits what I expect from a starting NFL QB.   More importantly for me is that this is the actually the first time I've ever seen Caleb genuinely smile when talking about the Bears (when he mentions the good time he had on his 30 visit).

Talent for me was never the biggest issue although I do still have concerns about some of his bad habits such as bad throws under pressure, and how loosely he carries the ball when scrambling.  Plus he's not the most accurate deep passer but he's good enough.

I was more worried about 1) would he even play in Chicago, and 2) would he have the work ethic and maturity to handle this job in the NFL.   Kudos to Channing Crowder, Ryan Clark, and Fred Taylor for putting together a quality interview, really a deep dive into the person who is Caleb Williams.

I remember after we drafted Trubisky I came across an article about Mahomes.  In short, during college Mahomes was totally focused on getting to the NFL.  He wasn't into the party scene, didn't drink, just focused on football.  I had him as my 1b to Trubisky as 1a because I'd seen him have numerous multi INT games where he'd make risky throws all over the field.  If I had known the character side of both players there's no way I'd have taken Trubisky over Mahomes.  Looking back it's clear Trubisky doesn't really want to put in the effort to be a starting QB, not physical but the mental side with film study.

After listening to him in this interview now I don't see that being a problem with Caleb.  I also feel like he's gained some maturity or perspective on things as he's gone through the draft process.  Without saying it directly, it seems to me he hints that there are some things he'll do differently and better in the future.

I recall Caleb saying he played HS ball with Penn St LT Olum Fashanu.  I wouldn't be shocked to hear his name called if the draft fell a certain way.

He's shooting up because he initially was slated as an OT, then OG, now center.  He can literally pay any position on the OL.  His arms are slightly short for an LT, but was all ACC at it.(Longer than JPJ though) He'll make a great center prospect, as will JPJ.  They are running 1 and 2 depending on who you look at.

Barton also has a high iq for understanding and making line calls. I mentioned him months ago for C when he was listed mainly as OT.  Been seeing some drafts with GB taking him rd1 because he has versatility to play anywhere. I wouldn't complain if Poles drafted him and if he is climbing, then maybe Frazier slides.

    and pay Moore too!

Of course the same logic works to have a rookie DE across from Sweat. In important positions, a top ranked vet paired with a high picked player on a rookie deal is the way to go.

But you need to be sure youre getting a real stud and not just drafting a position?

Right now, the projected blue-chip DE is Turner DE/OLB, but is he a scheme fit? I think Latu or Verse are closer fit, regarded as DE/Edge and can be blue, or is it Darius Robinson DL/DE?  Size and college position determined class.  A guy similiar to Sweat is Myles Cole DE Texas Tech if they look for a body style.

Guys Poles should run for at 9 are Alt, Nabers, or Odunze.  I think they can move down a few slots and get a tier 1b guy especially if Penix is there and the Raiders/Broncos want to bid against each other for him.

  15. 24 minutes ago, Mongo3451 said:

It depends on the offense you are running.  Sean Peyton values guards over tackles for inside out schemes.  If our system dictates better inside blocking, you can't get better than Fuaga.

I am a oline guy, but I want nothing to do with drafting a G in round 1.  If the team was complete and we were drafting at pick 25 or after, then maybe. I have the same thought on RB and MLB.  Sure you can get a good one like Roquan, but you can also find cheaper equivalent talent later in the draft.  If they draft oline at 9, better be LT and there are maybe 2 worthy.  WR is always a need if you look at the price.  Moore could have been a 2025 1st rd pick but we wanted him or Burns instead. Allen is a pricey 1 year rental (20mil), so getting a stud on the cheap now can help save money to pay either Jenkins or Davis down the road.

Thayer had an interesting take on what he wants.  He wants Alt, saying he's a can't miss lockdown left tackle.  He mentioned that teams would line up to trade for Braxton.  There is value in a starting left tackle with only two years in the NFL.

One thought that crosses my mind is what is more important to get, a stud LT, DE, or WR?  This is taking into account that next draft the Bears could be looking at drafting 15-20th and can they get one of the 3 positions next year at that slot. With that thought, I hate to say it but Alt would have to be deeply considered. Yes, they have Braxton but saying they shouldn't shoot for a top 3-5 LT to pair with Wright and make the line one of the best is like saying QB wasn't a need with JF.
