  1. Here is my take and lots of questionable directions a few teams can go. If the top 3 WRs are gone what do the Bears do

    1. Caleb Williams QB Chicago

    2. Drake Maye QB Washington

    3. Jayden Daniel's QB. New England - or trade with Denver for huge draft haul

    4. Marvin Harrison Jr WR Arizona

    5. ? Brock Bowers TE LA Charger - fans want Bowers, they should draft LT Alt. Seeing Nabers/Odunze WR too but have Allen, Williams, and Q Johnson.

    6. ? Malik Nabers WR NY Giants - their QBs got killed, OT would be smart. QB?

    7. Joe Alt OT Tennessee

    8. Dallas Turner DE Atl- they have QB and WRs

    9. Rome Odunze WR Chicago - trade down if WRs are gone

    10. Olum Fashonu OT NY Jets - if Bowers is available, I can see him here too.

for sure you could put Mahomes or Brady on a crappy team and it would be hard for them to win a superbowl. Football is the ultimate team sport.

But I believe a great QB can do more with less, than a great team can accomplish without a great QB. And that the soundest strategy is to have both.

And also that building a roster is easier than finding an elite QB.

It takes all phases.  One reason the Bears most likely stayed with Flus is because a new HC can change all the personal needs with different schemes.  That would set the team back and if they do take a QB, make his life more difficult to develop.  The QB needs his offense players to know the plays and execute near perfection to be successful. What I do see is Waldron taking over possibly at the end of the year and Washington learning as much as he can to keep the defense on par.

Now that Hunter is out of the picture (signed with Houston), how about DJ Wonnum who also played along the Vikings Defensive Front?  He finished out his rookie contract (4th year) with Minnesota last year and racked up 8 sacks while doing so.  He's scheduled to visit with Chicago on Thursday (after visiting Carolina on Wednesday).

Houston is on superbowl or bust mode. They will be a team to reckon with.

    The truth is ,

the Bears have not decided whether to draft Caleb just yet because his information is incomplete.

The bears are not actively trying to trade Fields.

The media created these stories then use each other as sources.

The Bears have a better than 60% chance they will draft Caleb because he is a talented player. Poles will let us know when he decides that because he will actively try to trade Justin.

Rapport and Schefter have both reported that and everyone claims there insiders.

Poles hasn't had his chance to really dive into CW yet.  He wants to push his buttons like he did D Wright. If CW can run through the brick wall, he will be a Bear if he thinks he is too good to buy into the team culture, they will trade down.  They might bend a little, but they need to get this evaluation along with medicals.  This is why they cannot shop the QB they have under contract.  Sometime after March 20, they will get this done and can make their decision.

Agree again and if Mooney doesn't get money somewhere else, he may be back on a cheap deal.

Rumor has it that KC is interested in signing Mooney. He would fit right in with the dropsies

Also, a big drop,  Mooney declined a 3 year extension from the Bears before the 2023 season.

  6. Everyone here is talking about the same thing over and over again while there is other news to discuss.  Looks like Poles is going with Bates at C and maybe a rookie if one is there in the 4th.

    Lloyd Cushenberry C sign w Ten 4 yr 50

    Tyler Biadasz C signs w Was 3 yr 30

Andre James C - resigns with LV 3 yr 24

Aaron Brewer C signs with Mia 3 yr 21

    Mitch Morse C sign w Jax 2 yr 10.5

Some of those teams are still in on drafting a QB. Justin's market may not develop until after the draft. Someone is not getting their guy.

LVR has Getsy  there, not happening. Den only realistic option.

Denver is rumored to be looking to move up and draft a QB.

  8. 6 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

I doubt that Russell Wilson wants to be a bridge QB, but if he did, we could get him cheap and take a QB off of the market to help the Fields trade market in one move.

On the other hand, if no team offers him a legit starting spot, which is possible for sure, he might just take the Denver money

He wants to get back to the top and a team like Pit, Tampa, or Atl will be calling.  No way he would want to come here knowing CW will be drafted

no doubt, if you have Mahomes or Brady and you cant give them any pocket at all, youre screwed. Football is the ultimate team sport and the weakest link makes the rest a problem.

On the other hand, if you dont have a top QB, the rest doesnt matter.

The question is "have teams built rosters without having the #1 pick to trade down for a haul?" and of course the answer is yes. But "have teams won multiple superbowls without a dominant top QB?" and the answer to that is no.

So this is the opportunity to get one, and i dont think you let it slip by. That doesnt mean we dont need OL help and WRs. It just means you dont have to pass on the QB to get them,

The debate is over.  We know what's going to happen and the biggest debacle is going to be what do we do with JF.  The Bears need to optimize the value, which might be low now.  If it doesn't increase, the Bears cannot give it away. I am not on the board that having CW and JF in the same locker room will be bad. They might not even share the locker room by the time the season starts because they will be ready to pull the trigger once they get the value they are looking for. JFs contract was fully guaranteed, so he is paid for until it ends.  There might be offset language saying the team they trade him too picks up that contract, but I have not read that.  I feel in order for Poles to trade, he wants a low 1st or high 2nd with maybe a 4th or 5th.

The best free agents are going to get 20+ . With the Ravens DT deal that's what Wilkins is shooting for

. Only a few RBs will get close to 10 mil_Poles may be able to get a bargain there.

There's to many available Ss that will dilute the pay scale. Unfortunately McKinney will get paid and be out of Poles price range.

He will bring in another center but if won't be Cusenberry, he's probably the only one getting paid. 12-15 mil a year.

I think he waits on Edge players, the first few will get paid but he will wait when he can GWT one on a 1 year 10 mil deal. Someone like Clowny or Floyd.

Seems like the Saquan story is heating up.  I am not a big fan on investing high on RBs, the same way on LB, but that is where Poles invested last year.

If Poles brings in Clowny or Floyd, I would consider that a higher level investment. Since I do not see the Bears spending their 9th pick on DE, they need someone who can fill the spot for possibly 2 years.  DE might be their top priority in the 2025 draft and they would want someone locked in for the rookie to compete against.

After JJ expect no big money deals.  I think we stick with tier 2 FAs at Safety and Center.  I'd love to sign Christian Wilkins but there's no money or logic for doing that when you can fix 3 positions, C, S, and #3 WR for similar money.

I'd like to think Poles gets one more big name. The Bears are getting to the point that if they are going to contend, they need to get a starting #2 DE or WR in FA because they can only get one in the draft.  I'm not suggesting 20 million deal but possibly a 12-15.

  12. 5 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

Bears meeting with Safety Kevin Byard today - a perennial all pro who played most of his career in Tennessee. He's 30 years old, so probably a 2 year deal to fill a hole and then draft a replacement next year if we make an offer at all.

Expected to command $7.2M a year.

He would be better than any rookie we would draft this year. I also think they interview a couple others.

Good Grief, I don't remember so many EVPs & SVPs hired. Have they announced an SVP in charge of the toilet paper acquisition? Warren is going to have a staff under him to rival the number of scouts under Poles or coaches under Flus.

A president needs good people to do the leg work.  The Bears have the stadium and the team to get right. His name is on top of it all, so it is his stamp.  It would be nice in a way to see something done in the city and the team contending for years.

Center was so bad, I just want a, lock down, pure center.  The flexibility is cool.  If he can be the guy at center, sure.

Bingo, no more darts.  They have Bates, Keeney, and Kramer already.  Get the prospect who will lock it down and put it to rest.

I dont think Caleb would be scared of Fields' competition, I think it's a matter of establishing leadership and respect. You can imagine the locker room might not be so happy about watching Caleb take it from Fields after all weve read about the love for Fields in the locker room - and if this board, or all of Chicago sports talk, is any indication, it's a contentious emotional issue?

And I would imagine Fields would HATE it. I wouldnt be at all surprised if we sign a vet QB to give Caleb a month or two to develop, and I see the logic of keeping Fields since he's under contract, but I dont think hes the guy for that role, so I think he will get traded.

I see it the other way around with the locker room and fans.  Once CW gets playing time and everyone sees his ability, the feelings will change.  JF won't be unprofessional, heck, he might light it up knowing his time is coming to an end. Then come trade deadline and the demand will be higher.

I don't want the Bears to lose value in him. There is a way to increase it if it doesn't happen by the draft.

  16. 1 hour ago, BearFan PHX said:

Well it sure does sell clicks, so expect it to continue. But in reality, the Bears are not keeping Justin unless no one trades for him. Can you imagine how Caleb's camp would feel about keeping a fan favorite around? It's a recipe for royally screwing up what could be the best thing you ever had.

At this point, I can't say that anyone is trading a 3rd or better for Fields. I think they will, but I cant know that. But I do know that keeping Fields into training camp and having him participate is just asking for trouble.

I think Justin's market is fast becoming a backup QB spot somewhere. And I think that says a lot about how he is as a QB. I can't imagine JF would be happy with that on any team including ours. If the Bears keep Fields and draft Williams, I could easily see Justin holding out to demand a trade. Wouldnt you? I would.

The Packers drafted Love, Arob wasn't happy but didn't demand a trade. You can make a fuss and threats, but that doesn't help anyones case.  CW shouldn't panic or fuss either over competition knowing JF is on his last year. If he cannot handle another QB to compete against or hold a clip board for then is he gonna be man enough to be a Chicago QB?

  17. 2 hours ago, BearFan PHX said:

right, so Chicago is iffy at best on keeping Justin at QB1. Thats all Im saying. Chicago hasnt been telling everyone that they love Justin and want to trade the #1 pick down. Theyve been acting like theyre looking to move Justin. I dont think thats a really controversial thing to say?

Even JF doesn't know what the plan is and said he wishes this to get over soon. Poles has said he will be upfront with JF and he would be the first to know. That writing tells me the Bears are open to all scenarios and nothing is being leaked.  If the Bears get a offer they like for either diection, they will move. Poles at the combine said he stays up late running scenarios through his head, undecided.

Since the locker room is behind JF, Poles has to weigh all aspects and the best route might be holding on to him and drafting CW since the trade cupboard is bare. Get a #2 WR at 9 if a top 3 is there and let the QBs compete.  You have a veteran to let CW grow and the Bears can let JF increase his value.

Some teams are screwed this offseason. As of today, Miami and LAC are both $20M over the cap. The Bills, even after all those cuts are still $13M over. The Saints and Ravens are both $10M over, the Broncos are $3M over, and the 49ers are 300K over. Not only do those teams need to get under the cap in a few days, they need operating income and money for the rookie pool, which collectively is around $10M.

Glad the date is approaching fast.  Maybe Poles trades JF to a team in cap trouble, especially at QB.  I'd think Denver contacted Poles to trade Wilson for Fields while throwing in a couple picks too

it sure would be good to have 3 more 2nd or 3rd round picks! But it's always like that. I'd like to keep Brisker, and i feel like Lus does too, so maybe youre right about McKinney.

Zone teams generally put more money up front anyway, so thats another reason they may not want to pay big $ to a FS.

It takes the right balance since the D is in more nickel or dime these days. Poles did well by building a backfield with 4 good CBs to go with Brisker and whoever they sign at fs.  The killer is they need another stud at  WR and DE, so pick 9 will be one of those or a trade down.
