  1. If he can get Xavier McKinney, the backfield will be the best in the NFL. The best cover safety and cover CB will give the front 7 time to get knock the QB out of rhythm.  The only issue is Brisker will want to get paid next year and a higher priced FS may make him a tough signing.

for sure. and he is definitely taking it as a serious issue.

I would love to see them get Frazier or Van Pran in Aprl to help settle the C position once and for all.  That would tell me how serious he is if he gets a long term fix planted this offseason.

  3. Fields was mishandled by the Bears and he never developed.  He could possibly turn it around, but with the top pick in the draft and a QB like CW that only comes every 5 to 10 years, the Bears cannot pass on the opportunity.

As exciting as getting the biggest draft haul in history can be, the Bears would be a QB away from winning it all. We watched it with Rex.  Many fans feel bad for JF, we know he was and will be done wrong, but the game is about a trophy and starting fresh with a QB with CW talent gives the Bears the best shot for many years.

we are starting to look like a real roster.  We dont need a haul of picks to put this puzzle together. I mean, sure it'd be amazing, but even more amazing will be putting a real QB into this mix too. I exepct another OL player in the under $10M range too. So a couple impact players AND a few more role fillers too.

I truly think Poles is taking the OL seriously this offseason.

Poles oline acquisitions. Many darts and resources used early on hoping to strike gold.  He did find  nuggets in BJones and Wright.

  5. JJ can finally hit the market and see his worth. Poles feels his offer is inline to what teams would pay.  It does really limit JJ, but a team like Baltimore, for example, can make him an offer knowing it's 2 firsts should be near the 30s.  Hopefully, JJ gets some interest and comes back home.

  6. Poles isn't afraid to trade picks or players.  Trading our 4th and 5th for depth G/C's has me a little concerned since Feeney seems like a wasted move  and using the pick on C Doug Kramer.  Seems like we are throwing many darts at an important position and missing the board. This move tells me he has another move in his mind to get some draft value back and it scares me if the plan is moving out from no1.

Those are moments you remember when other things get forgotten. Might Poles thinks JJ could be great and takes him at 9? I never underestimate Poles to not do what is expected.

Scenario: trade back a couple spots and get extra picks and draft MHJ plus grab McCarthy at 9, I could live with that.

Another tidbit kinda caught me with Harbaugh.  He asked me if I knew when the quarterbacks were working out tomorrow.  I told him, then interjected that I was disappointed that the big three weren't throwing.  He told us that he knew what we've all been hearing, but don't buy the hype.  He said JJ is going to be a player.  He was like, "mark my words.  He's going to be great".  He was saying cold dead serious and knew we weren't media.  I also talked to his new DB coaches wife for a half hour.  She was absolutely gorgeous inside and out.  She said Harbaugh is the truest person she has ever met and that he doesn't waste any words playing games or BS ing anyone.  Totally loves him. Then after all of that, I found out they know my sister from when she was a PT for the University of Kentucky on the early 2000's.  More to come...

Keep them coming Mongo, enjoying the stories.  Sure wish the Bears went after him.  It would have brought back that 85 hype.  The HC would have taken the lime light and injected new life into the team.

I think I am leaning to drafting Turner at 9 , signing Mike Evans, and drafting another wideout in 3rd round. Use pick you get for Fields on oline and another pick on safety.

I would be open to signing one of the running backs to a deal to help Caleb. Barkley or Ekler (banged up but so good as a receiver).

I presume they can get Evans for big money but without a ton of years and even after taking Turner they should have cap space for a free agent oline or dlinemen plus maybe grab a safety?

The safety FA market is strong, so I do not see the Bears drafting that position high. I feel they should draft a good young WR prospect to balance the spending as well as a DE.  Since WR seems deeper in the draft, they might go DE at 9 but realistically need a 2nd to get that WR.  If Poles feels Caleb is not a good fit for the culture and sees Maye as about as good, maybe he can gain some draft capital by trading WAS. Round 3 has to go Center and there is a good chance either Frazier or Van Pran are there.

No decision made yet, but when Poles says Fields needs to be better in 2-minute situations and Flus says his QB needs to win in 2-minute situations, it feels like they are laying out their plan. Can it change, absolutely, but to me, it feels like they are just waiting for a trade partner for Fields compared to the #1 pick.

Here is Poles with Florio and Simms:

The last question to Poles was the NFLs 2024 cap raise. Their will be an additional 30 million added which will change a lot of the decisions from GMs. Players that were on the verge of being cut may be kept. It all seems great knowing we get that much more but it also shrinks the pool of players that may have been in the market.  It will also raise players demands for more money.  Poles was surprised, so he didn't see that coming.  He should have extended Jaylon during the season and might have got him at a bargain.  It also helps Poles if he decides to hold on to JF even if he drafts a QB. If all he gets are 2nd round offers, wait until a team's starter QB goes down with a season ending injury and the price just went up.

I feel like Brady nailed this. It's been a real problem for the Bears from Nagy through Getsy. Fields fans will appreciate this, and so will Fields detractors. It really fits the truth of our situation in Chicago, and shines a light on what is missing. It indicts the coaches and QBs both.

Been preaching that it all starts at the top for a while. It's hard to get to the top without the best coaches. Hope Warren and Poles see it in Flus. I will say I think they finally have a good OC.

If the Bears do that, I think they can build a great team to eventually bring a rookie QB that anyone should prosper with. 2 firsts in 2024, 3 in 2025, and if they trade ATL, it will require their 2026, so 2 in 2026. They can use those picks to gain addition picks too.  You can grab a 2nd rd QB prospect for insurance if desired. Sign the 5th year to lock JF down and make the 85 team again.

The Commanders will more than likely be picking top 8 or higher next year.  Or if they end up like Carolina, maybe the top pick again.

It will be considered by Poles. Does he feel better with the haul of a lifetime or a chance at a great QB. If the QB is wrong, you lose at the addition 6 first rd players if right, the QB could be worth all that.

    Let's just say 5-6 wins

    Home opponents:

    Dallas Cowboys

    • New York Giants
    • Philadelphia Eagles
    • Atlanta Falcons
    • Carolina Panthers
    • Cleveland Browns
    • Pittsburgh Steelers
    • Tennessee Titans
    • Chicago Bears

    Away opponents:

    • Dallas Cowboys
    • New York Giants
    • Philadelphia Eagles
    • New Orleans Saints
    • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
    • Baltimore Ravens
    • Arizona Cardinals
    • Cincinnati Bengals

I think on your point that a QB has a 66% chance of being a top 2 QB is something I can't see. There are 32 starting QB's in the NFL - one is Patrick Mahomes. So odds that in a given year I have a 2/3rd's chance that I am going to get someone who is either better than Patrick Mahomes or better than Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson and whomever you have on that next tier seems off the mark.

Now if you say - odds are 50/50 that he is a top 7 QB - than I can maybe get into that window. I think when it comes to deciding who is a top 2 QB it gets really hard.  I mean just look at the last handful of those guys - only Peyton Manning was a #1 overall picks (and this is coming from someone who supports taking a QB early).

Otherwise - If I think back to the last 15 years - at different point(s) in their careers - these 5 stand out the most:

Tom Brady - We know the story

Mahomes - Taken after a few others

Rodgers - Fell in the draft

Drew Brees - 2nd round pick (or last pick in 1st round - don't recall)

    Peyton Manning - #1 overall

    Next Wave:

Big Ben - High pick - but not top 5

Josh Allen - High pick - but not #1 overall (and he needs to win a superbowl I think to get into the next list)

Lamar Jackson - Late 1st rounder

Eli Manning - High pick - I don't know if I want to rate him but I guess i will

Matt Ryan - might be stretching, but #1 overall

Teams need to have most pieces in place to make a qb work. It starts from the top.  I think the Bears have the right GM in place.  HC is still shaky, but he did improve as the season progressed with all of the issues he faced.  OC, I think they have the best guy that was available but time will tell. Is the Oline able to protect the QB and help with calls?  They are getting closer too but there is a huge hole at C and G/OT depth.  Running game, seems pretty good but no standout and if you remove JF, are they great?  WR, after DJ Moore, they are basically all guys that wouldn't be missed. TE, they need a better backup.

They need about 4 good to great players on offense or 1/3.  Count the QB and we are closer to needing half the personal.

If they draft Caleb, would he be enough to overcome those deficiencies?  They could still upgrade maybe two positions with good to great replacements and they might be closer, but that is also how you wreck a rookie.

Whatever way the Bears go, I will support.  As DaBears listed, great QBs come not only from the number one slot because they go to a great situation and are developed.

It has less to do with lower body strength than it does footwork and hand fighting.  If you let a DL get into your body, it's over.  Overall mass and strength helps a ton, but guys make it in the NFL on technique.

I played guard, was short, strong, and fast.  Was a great pulling guard but understood leverage with being short.  6'4 guys with 40-50# on me had trouble because I knew how to get my hands under their shoulder pads and stand them up on their toes.  It was fun a time.  Braxton needs to learn technique and also get stronger. Playing LT is the toughest because you are facing the best who have multiple techniques.  Teams know his struggles and that is usually how they attack knowing JF will feel the pressure and bail. I know Braxton is eager to improve and imagine he will work on this more this offseason. If the Bears don't feel he will make improvements, they might insurance later in the draft.  This will be his prove it year and if he doesn't, look for them to go LT high next year.

  15. 1 hour ago, Stinger226 said:

If we take a OT, Braxton can compete at OG. It builds depth at the least. Bring 3 OL in and let them fight it out for starting jobs. We need at least 8.

I don't see Braxton able to play inside, his biggest struggle is against power/bull rush.  He can pull and move well, but loses ground on straight up pressure.  Going into year 3, he needs to overcome that.

makes sense. Do you expect center and free safety in free agency? I kinda do, and maybe a DL or WR too.

And however that goes will probably affect that #9 pick.

I think we will see a free agent like OC Lloyd Cushenberry, because even JPJ is a specimen for sure, we probably wont want a rookie center to start day 1?

Olin said JPJ could start but needs a vet line and TE to help him do it.

  17. 30 minutes ago, BearFan PHX said:

Poles has shown an understanding and willingness to upgrade position groups that needed it, and the OL rebuild began last year with Wright and Davis. Davis hasn't played up to his potential in Chicago, but he has played very well before. Im sure Poles attention on that group is going to increase this offseason.

Poles is a former offensive lineman too, so I think he'll be active in upgrading that group - especially so if he is taking a rookie QB, and I guess especially so if he is keeping Fields too. It's a clear need now.

    Wright is solid at RT.

We will absolutely be picking up a new starting center too - that's a no brainer.

Jenkins is good, but has been injured, and Davis is talented, but has been inconsistent, so I expect we will bring in an OG too, and between the three of them, we should manage to get two good ones on the field. That OG should probably be looked at as a future starter if not sooner.

So only question is really Braxton Jones - do people think he is good enough, or does he need a replacement?

that #9 pick is almost certainly going WR, DE or OT. Maybe a trade down to get two of those positions?

And we have a lot of free agency cash to spend too.

I bet we will have at least 3 new players on OL this year who can compete for starting roles:

    1) a new starting center, most likely from free agency

    2) a rookie OG to compete with Jenkins and Davis

    3) a free agent OG

    4) a possible LOT from pick #9 or free agency.

I think he will ride out Braxton Jones for at least one more year before addressing the position high in the draft.  If there is one at 9, I wouldn't rule it out though.  If he trades down, it will more than likely be at 9 to try to get into rd 2 so they can fill two holes with better talent.

There are so many mock drafts out there; it seems endless. This one, I think, would please many, although I personally have doubts about the trade they propose taking place. It shows how the Bears could draft both Caleb Williams and MHJ.

Three-round 2024 NFL mock draft: Patriots deal for Justin Fields in one of five first-round trades

I would be happy with it, except that 3rd round pick.  No way they take TE over other needs at C, S, DE, or G.  If they take a QB, they need to make sure the line is stronger than it was last year.  Too many times the pocket collapsed and Caleb has a lot of the same traits as JF and he will need the protection to get established and confident.

  19. 2 hours ago, Stinger226 said:

They still could be drafting a QB, but his conversation isn't hearsay, he's in the room when these things are discussed. People place value on other peoples opinions, yet dismissing Warren's statements? That doesn't compute.

Warren is only leaking how valuable he sees JF to help set the market. There might be a stipulation placed on trading him like 1st rd or nothing. The Bears will listen to all trade proposals for the first overall and JF and want to get the max on all opportunities.

  20. 1 hour ago, adam said:

OK, so I saw a graphic about this and had to look into it. Apparently, since 2000, there has only been a single Super Bowl victory that had a top 10 WR on the roster who was drafted by the team he played for in the Super Bowl. That is Mike Evans. There have been 33 picks in the top 10 used for a WR since 2000. It is ugly.

Here are those 33 WRs, sorted by # of career receptions:

1    Larry Fitzgerald - Super Bowl loss (Kurt Warner)
    2    Andre Johnson
3    Julio Jones - Super Bowl loss (28-3 thanks Shanny)
4    Mike Evans - Super Bowl win (Tom Brady)
    5    Calvin Johnson
    6    A.J. Green
    7    Amari Cooper
    8    Michael Crabtree
9    Plaxico Burress - played on winning team for NYG
10    Ted Ginn Jr. - 2x Super Bowl losses (w/ SF and CAR)
11    Roy Williams - Lions LOL!
12    Sammy Watkins - played on winning team for KC
    13    Braylon Edwards
    14    Travis Taylor
    15    Mike Williams
    16    Koren Robinson
    17    Peter Warrick
    18    Corey Davis
    19    Ja'Marr Chase - Super Bowl loss
    20    Jaylen Waddle
    21    Tavon Austin
22    DeVonta Smith - Super Bowl loss
    23    Darrius Heyward-Bey
    24    Reggie Williams
    25    Garrett Wilson
    26    Drake London
27    David Terrell - Bear Down!
28    Mike Williams - Lions LOL!
    29    Justin Blackmon
    30    Troy Williamson
    31    John Ross
32    Charles Rogers - Lions LOL!
33    Kevin White - Bear Down!

So 5 Super Bowl appearance by 33 players, and a 1-4 record in the Super Bowl in the last quarter century. This does not look good at all. Also, only Jones, Chase, and Smith played in a Super Bowl with a QB drafted by the team. So 3 Super Bowl appearances, zero wins, by 33 players who were drafted in the top 10 who played with a QB drafted by the team. I know it seems convoluted, but if the Bears roll with Fields and draft MHJ or draft Williams and Odunze at 9, the odds of success are extremely low.

This is a thing, right? Like that is too one-sided to not be a thing.

Would Cincy be in the neighborhood without Chase though? It is geat QBs that win and sometimes it takes great tools and weapons for those QBs to reach their potential.

I think we have guys on the roster with definite talent. I think DJ Moore is a stud.

In fact, I can imagine that Moore doesnt need a coach who yells at him, or is insistent on reaching deeper. But most of them do. Very few players have the football IQ that Moore has. Moore sees the entire field and is a master of spacing. He is like an offensive sided Mike Brown. He knows exactly where everyone is going to be, and how to get to the right spot.

Sweat is a monster too. Kmet is developing nicely. i think our LBs are extremely talented, but need more coaching.

I think Wright is gonna eat the league this year. I like our running back situation. Our corners are all players, and Brisker is great too. if Jenkins stays healthy, hes a stud too. I think Davis has it in him to play well. But theres a player that seems like he needs motivating.

So Im not mad at most of the roster. And Im not mad at the position coaches. The offensive coaches look promising too.

A lot of what's been built is solid.

But I still dont trust Eberflus. Hopefully, all the good coaches around him will keep him from getting too safe or too weird in situations.

But could you imagine Andy Reid being described as "laid back" as the first thing that comes to mind? or Belichick, or Shanahan, or any of the coaches in the playoffs this year?

It's football, and it shouldnt be this big mystery. We know what winners look and sound like.

Flus has a long way to go to be anywhere near those names.  I wish they went with offensive guru and maybe Poles sees that with Waldron and has him as a contingency plan in the future. Especially if they draft QB.  I think most were hopeful for Harbaugh but for whatever reason they were not making a change this year. Drafting a QB then making a coaching change would be as the title suggests insane.
