I'd be pretty OK with this, though I've been kind of rethinking my view of CB of late. Namely, if we don't draft one in the 2nd, I'm not sure we need one. What we really need is someone to challenger for the #2 CB spot, which you're probably only going to get with an early pick. From a depth standpoint, we actually look pretty good: we have a nickel starter (Skrine) with a young back up (Shelley), We have several youngish big CBs who have shown some promise who are vying for a starting role (Tolliver, Roberson, Joseph). And we have a young athletic wildcard in Denmark. If we don't go CB early, I think I'd like to see what this group can do.

Are you suggesting Gordon is better than Trubisky? For me, if Foles gets injured and Trubisky falters, I’d much rather go into an off-season knowing you need a QB than having a guy you drafted in the 5th-7th round that you’re not sure can do the job. Absolutely best case scenario you’re the Jaguars this year going into the offseason hoping Minshew is the guy. But history tells us they’d almost never the case. Maybe once in a decade a guy like that really emerges. The most successful QBs taken in the 5th-7th rounds in the last decade are probably Minshew, Tyrod Taylor, AJ McCarron, and Trevor Siemien. Anyone there excite you? Maybe they look OK in the short term, but they are guys you eventually look to replace. Hell, there are years when no QB taken in the last three rounds of the draft ever start a game. If next year’s Bears QBs fail, you fix it with a premier signing or premier draft pick, not pinning the teams hopes on a late round QB.

For the people who want Reagor or Aiyuk, can you explain to me what they give us that we don't have in Anthony Miller? I've heard a lot of people touting both as the "speed" receiver the Bears need, but looking at combine numbers, Aiyuk ran a 4.5, Reagor ran a 4.47, and Miller, who did not run at the combine, was timed at between 4.46 and 4.52 at his pro day. They are all essentially the same size, and Miller had much more polish as a route runner coming out than either Reagor or Aiyuk. I recognize that many receivers find their 40- times magically shaved at their pro day as opposed to the combine, but even so, it seems to me that if you want to argue for a speedier receiver in the 2nd round, Hamler would make more sense than Reagor or Aiyuk. Otherwise I feel like we are just drafting a less polished Miller. I'm personally starting to get in the came that we might be better served taking a big outside receiver like Tee Higgins and put Miller in the slot, unless they think that Ridley or Wims can be that guy. If you still want a pure speed guy, you can take a developmental guy near the end of the draft or look at Antonio Gibson in the middle rounds that you can use in that way.

I think we also need to take into account that it might be harder to complete trades this year because so many war rooms will be spread out, so getting everyone on the same page might take more effort. Personally, I think the ideal situation is to trade down 7-10 spots in the 2nd and pick up a 4th and a 5th. That gives you some flexibility at the end of the second to still land two top-64 players or to trade one of them, ideally to a team like the Pats or Broncos for two of their third round picks. Now you've eliminated the 112 pick gap in picks.

Van Jefferson would also be an option if we traded down and got a mid-round pick. There are also some other safety option if we miss out on Winfield (Jeremy Chinn is Steve Atwater's nephew and JR Reed is Dale Carter's nephew).

Without altering it too much, I'd swap Kmet in the 2nd with a CB (Igbinoghene or Dantzler) and then swap one of the 7th's with a TE and would be fine with it.

I assume we won’t get as much notice of those as we have in the past, since in the past reporters could just camp out at the facility and see who goes in and out. Sounds like the biggest part of the process that will be affected is medical checks. I had kind of bookmarked some prospects I could see Pace looking at as bargain players with part medical red flags a la Eddie Jackson, like Trey Adams and Bryce Hall, but how does this process change you’re willingness to make that call. Will be interesting to see.

I can’t pretend to know Pace’s mindset, but if I were them I would be looking more for a late round pick (like we have much of a choice) with decent speed, but who also has the frame to carry the load if Montgomery falters or gets hurt. Cohen’s not that guy and Nall is the only other RB on the roster I think. My “guys” are Darrynton Evans, Antonio Gibson, and Rico Dowdle.

If we can't trade back, I target: #43 - CB - I prefer Trevon Diggs, but would be fine with AJ Terrell and I like Jaylon Johnson as well. I don't trust the #2 CB options (Burns, Toliver, Roberson) and I'm optimistic that these guys can step in and play. I don't think you can expect to even get a contributor at CB in rounds 5-7. #50 - OG - I'd love Ruiz but I think he'll be gone. Cushenberry might be there and would be a great option as well, but Robert Hunt and Matt Hennessey are also acceptable options. The fact that the Bears have a glaring need at OG, and two picks in rounds two, where you can get immediate starters at OG is too tempting for me to pass up. I think there will be some good safety options I like in rounds two, but I also think you might be able to get a guy like Geno Stone, J.R. Reid, or K'von Wallace in round five that can be in the mix at safety. The WRs are really tempting too, but in such a deep class, who knows who ends up dropping into the later rounds.

Seahawks fans are mostly saying good riddance (he was heavily penalized last year), but he strikes me as the kind of guy who is a disappointment as a former first round pick that you were always expecting more from if you're the team who drafted him, but as a guy coming in on what figures to be a reasonably low value deal, actually overperforms, since he has a lot of starting experience on a successful team. Bears just signed S Jordan Lucas who was with the Chiefs last year. Was a top ST player for them so seems to be filling the McManis/DHC role. Now you at least have 4 safeties of the roster with some NFL experience (Jackson, Bush, Lucas, Kentrell Brice). You figure they’ll use and early pick on a safety and that sounds about right. Tony Jefferson would have been nice, but Bears kind of have to bargain shop at this point, I fear.

Completely fine with this move and would be comfortable with him starting, though I assume they give him some competition in the draft. He made some mistakes early in the year, but seemed better when he got reps near the end of the year.

The one thing that worries me about this being the make or break year for Pace - He's already shown a willingness to trade away current and future draft picks to win now. How much more likely is he to do that if his back is against the wall? Don't want to leave the cupboard bare for the next guy.

If that's true, that suggests to me that they should see what the guys who were here last year can do this year now that they have a year under their belt.
