  1. It seems like older DC's have stayed in those positions longer than OC's. Dick LeBeau has been one forever, and no one has ever really thought of him as anything other than a DC. So fopefully Vic hangs around. For Gase, I think it will come down to what is available. The Bears just need to pay Gase and Fangio so there is less incentive to leave.

Is there a salary cap on the coaching staff? If not, that ownership needs to pay these three men to keep the continuity and allow either Gase or Fangio to be the future head coach when Fox eventually retires.

  2. Agreed on everything you said defensively. Our DB's were excellent! On offense, our C and LT were bloody awful. Jeremy Langford is going to make any loss of Forte less painful. I noticed them having similar runs with a difference in the finish. Langford consistently finished his runs a yard better after contact. Cutler was fantastic. And so was Marc Mariani. I hope it ends all the cut him talk. Hate our punter. Love the coaching staff.

I hate our Special Teams coach and play!

  3. Pace walked into the perfect storm when it comes to coaching. Fox was released late in the process, as were Gase and Fangio after they were screwed by san fran at the same time.

Pace needs to get some true playmakers until i buy into him. Right now I am just seeing amazing coaching by fangio, Fox doing a great job of what he does during the week, and Gase knowing his limitations with Cutler at QB. The offense has sucked giving the talent on offense but the D have over achieved a lot considering the talent. Gase has been able to find just the right way to squeeze out just enough offense to win the games they have won. The Bears are 24th in points per game on offense and 17th in yards to this point with the 8th most penalty yards.

Fangio is a freaking genius. I never thought that good of a coach could have this much of an impact.

Fox, Gase and Fangio all understand how to get the most out of each players is to put them in the best situations for success based on their individual strengths!

I'll never understand coaches who think they need to have certain specialized players to run their system which often takes way to long to turn around a team.

  4. I think you are correct. Aside from bringing up Fales we waived Terrance Mitchell from the practice squad. So we have two openings on the practice squad.

It's pretty surprising that we brought up Fales and cut Clausen. If Fales was the better backup they should have just made the decision earlier. At this point the roster is becoming more about the future and this says Clausen is not in next year's plan but Fales is. I'm sure Clausen was kept around because they felt he had a better grasp of the offense since Fales missed so much time in preseason. Barring disaster at the QB position Clausen has played his last game as a Bear.

Fox said nothing about Kevin White but he did say the open spot on the practice squad would likely go to another QB prospect down the road. Since you can't sign another team's practice squad player to your practice squad that would mean taking a QB off the street. That would seem like a waste of time to be honest because what good young QB prospects are FA right now? Or do we just need someone to run the scout team, anyone who has a pulse?

That only explains one of the practice squad openings. This leaves open the possibility of bringing White to the 53-man roster and pushing another WR to the practice squad, likely Cam Meredith. More disappointing for Jason and others would be that this means Mariani (who is not eligible for the practice squad) stays on the active roster. Tue 4pm is the deadline to have White start his 3 week practice window or move him to IR.

I think Pace was hoping that Baltimore or Tampa Bay would have called at some point and offered a trade for Clausen, lol!

  5. Pace hits like he did in the last draft we will really be sitting pretty. Not to mention a ton of cap space for FA.

It's night and day different from the last coaching staff.

Fox and company have been really impressive.

Is there a salary cap for coaches? If not and from what we seen from the staff thus far I say lock them up with more money!

  6. I agree from the perspective that I did not have great expectations going into this season and want to see a team play hard and smart while showing improvement from week to week. Thus far they have not been embarrassing unless Clausen has started for Jay. Coaching has been much better and we are seeing in game adjustments being made. Glad to see the trade of Allen, cutting Ratliff as now is the time to keep playing the youngsters to see what we have. My biggest complaint is special teams which apparently takes the short bus to soldier field! Pace / Fox need to fire the ST coach because this unit has been that embarrassing.

  7. Yeah, I really don't understand the lack of urgency in the play calling in overtime. Almost felt like neither team wanted to win in OT. Passing game looked good sans the INT, running game was pretty bad, and that's how you wanna play in OT?

Gotta give it to this staff for making this team look competent but man, they are ultra conservative at times.

I got concerned when Gase called three straight running plays then punt which gave the Lions excellent field position with 2:32 left in the 4th quarter. One first down and the Bears could have possible ran out the clock without going to OT. Reminded me of Lovie Ball there.

  8. I feared Gase would get his shot next year, didnt even think he could potentially bring Fangio with him........Way to ruin my sunday......

Why does Gase or Fangio need to leave? Perhaps Pace has promised the keys to Halas Hall to whomever fixes Jay or gets a top 5 defense first over the next two years and Fox retires! Nothing wrong with competition!

  9. ABSOLUTELY NOT. Jared Allen? Fine. He wasn't a life-long Bear. But the Bears shouldn't dump their life-long HOFers while they still have tread on the tires.

I love Matt Forte but he deserves a shot at the superbowl and the classy thing to do is for Pace to move him to a legit contender. This is not a typicall player dump but since the bears are rebuilding why should Forte grind it out for a team that is going nowhere.

  10. Not sure how many years Collins signed for but he should be a free agent sooner than the players that got drafted. With the Cowboys salary cap problems they may not be able to keep him beyond this first deal. Who knows but maybe he could end up with the Bears in the future.

  11. Thanks. I might note I was able to watch a segment on ESPN about half an hour ago and the revered Bill Polian had some compelling commentary about this very thing. I'd quote it all but the segment was about 20 mins long.

Parker Bear: One point that was brought out in this segment was that many newer rules and policies were put into play during the 2008 season but don't seem to be fairly and equitably dealt with from the Commissioner's office. That is on Goodell and I'll be the first to tell you that the guy is ineffective. Regardless, this incident is still a bad thing and highlights the problem with teams (specifically NE) getting away with 'bending the rules' over and over.

That's my main point in this "deflategate" is that the NFL is most culpable for not maintaining a better protocol on handling the footballs. I'm certainly against cheating but I just don't know how the NFL can penalize any team / player for manipulating the football when the NFL is ultimately responsible for maintaining the integrity of the game. The NFL has many faults but this seems like an easy fix. Have an NFL equipment manager or small crew present at each game responsible for inspecting, footballs, player equipment for safety and hold and maintain the footballs used during the games. How many times do you see a players helmet fly off during the course of an NFL game? I have always wonder how are these guys allowed to wear helmets so loosely. During a game a coach could always ask the "NFL Official Equipment manager" to check a football or a players uniform to ensure it meets the NFL standards.

  12. Where's the NFL culpability in all this? After all if the nfl had better procedures in handling game balls this cheating scandal would have not been possible. Major league baseball doest allow each team to supply their own game balls, the umpires approve and control all game balls. NFL should just take ownership of this and declare how they will handle game balls in the up coming season.
