  1. I agree that the Bears' all-time leader in touches also being the all-time leader in fumbles is no surprise. Its like Brett Farvre being the NFL leader in yardage and interceptions.

In the beginning of Payton's career he was the only weapon the Bears had and sometimes he would get blasted by opponents. The fact that he fumbled less than a hundred times when basically he played on bad teams nine out of his thirteen seasons speaks volumes as to how tough he was. Also the fact that he would carry the ball some times like a loaf of bread would have me surpised that he didn't lose the ball more.

  2. Yesterday while I was at TC I thought Bennett and Forte looked good.So I have to say that Bennett would have to be the surprise.Tyler Reed looked decent in blocking drills.Kellen Davis is a physical specimen and looks pretty quick for his size. On defense Toeana(sp?) looked like he did towards the end of the season strong as an ox and hard to move from the point of attack.I wouldn't be surprised if he started the season opposite Harris on the first defensive snap.

Yesterday the two primary QB's didn't look particularly sharp but Caleb Hanne looked decent.Brandon Lloyd laid out a couple of times to catch passes and Bennett and K. Davis look like they have decent hands. On defense I noticed that McGowan worked with first team at SS along with M.Brown and I didn't see D.Manning or R.Manning jr doing much on the field at all. Hester for someone with a sore hamstring looked like he was moving pretty well fielding punts without pads.

  3. I don't know about everyone else but, I have been trying to keep an eye on the eligibilty case of Univ. of Cincinnati QB Ben Mauck. He was recently denied a 6th year of eligibilty and could be headed to the supplemental draft. This could be someone the Bears could look at if they don't have to use an early pick.

  4. Agreed. However, if Schuening gets selected, I wouldn't mind Robert Felton out of Arkansas, Mike Fladell out of Rutgers, or Oneil Cousins out of UTEP, who is still on the board, surprisingly.

Colt Brennan was a Heisman finalist, maybe we should draft him.

    He is dead. :shakehead

JACKSONVILLE, Fla (AP) — Heath Benedict, a two-time Little All-American offensive lineman at Newberry College in South Carolina, was found dead on a couch in his Jacksonville home.

I sincerly apologize for not knowing about Benedict and It was not intended to be a joke!

  5. Simpson is gone, but he went to CIN, not WSH.

I'd much rather take Kevin O'Connell from SDSU or Josh Johnson from SD. Dixon seems like a more complete Colt Brennan- played well because of the system.

EDIT- And the damn Pats take O'Connell.

Sounds kind of like Dusty coming out of school, but take away the weed arrest and put an assault arrest there...

I like the thought of Dixon as a rehabbing learning prospect because he was a Heisman candidate before his injury.

  6. But size on the outside is just really improtant to helping out a struggling QB. GB pretty much recognized that by grabbing Nelson, who BTW is the man.

It also looks like the Bears are going to try and create more mismatches on offense.Like last season one of their TEs was split out wide quite a few times and then there is where are they going to line Hester up at? I also believe that Forte is going to be on the field on 3rd downs because unlike Benson he actually is familiar with pass protection and can catch the ball when it is thrown to him.

  7. Booker and Lloyd aren't big though, they weren't supposed to be our "big" guys, just possession guys. Both are 6', and Lloyd isn't even big weight-wise. We needed to get bigger height-wise.

You have to also factor in Clark and Olsen who also have size.

  8. Would have preferred a bigger/faster wide receiver, but Earl is a damn fine prospect even if he doesn't address our need for size at the receiver corps(5'11-1/2).

Marty Booker and Brandon Llyod are supposed to be are big receivers and Mark Bradley is supposed to be are fast WR with size.If he could stay healthy.

  9. 3rd Round Hopefuls:

Early Doucet, Andre Caldwell, Earl Bennett at WR

    Roy Schuening at OG

    4th Round Hopefuls:

    Chad Rinehart at OG

    Josh Johnson at QB

I would be happy with 2 out of these 5 for the next 3 picks. It seems like JA will always throw a sleeper in there.

    good call Bennett from Vandy

  10. Disagree with bringing in Booker. At least at this point. I just don't see how he fits in with this team. Booker does not have the speed that Turner craves, which is why Terry Shea wanted to dump him to begin with. Booker is a good possession type receiver with great route-running ability. He doesn't have much size or speed, and he'll be 32 by the time the season starts.

Reading the above posts, I get the impression that it's "dump Moose & bring back Booker." Is Booker any better? Seriously I doubt it. Don't speak lightly of dumping Moose. Yes he's been a dissappointment overall, but he's a team captain, a team leader, and he's a pro. His cap value is 3 million this year (thanks LT!) which ain't bad. He'll be back.

Looking at the receivers next year, I genuinely believe we'll bring back Rashied Davis to be our 5th receiver. He's great on special teams & he's a solid WR. He's restricted and I can't imagine him getting many offers.

Mark Bradley is back for one more season. Hopefully he can turn it around.

Hester is expected to see his WR role expanded this season.

    Moose will be back IMO.

That leaves room for one more. Hopefully Berrian returns, but if he doesn't, I'd bank we'll either draft or sign a burner that can stretch the field. Either way, I don't see Booker fitting in with this group.

If we did bring Booker back I expect we'd be dissappointed the same way we've been with Moose.

Bradjock size is not Booker's problem and he does own the Bears single season record for receptions. He does lack speed but, there have been many receivers in the NFL who lacked speed but could get open for TD's.When Booker was traded for Oguleye I didn't like it because he was the Bears leading reciver the previous year and I thought he could work well within the WCO that Turner runs because if we go back to when Turner was first here his WR's were Jeff Graham and Curtis Conway with Keith Jennings and Ryan Wetnight at TE.Thre was no real speed burners in that bunch bit they managed to help Erik Kramer to a Bears' passing completions and yardage record. The main person in this organization who covets speed is headcoach Lovie Smith.

  11. Just curious. FA is very near, w/ the draft not long after. Which aspect of the offseason are you all looking forward to more?

Personally, I am looking more forward to FA. OL is our greatest need (not counting QB, where I see little major change), and is the position I think Angelo has seen more quality FAs added, while also being among his weakest positions in the draft. So much hinges on our upgrading the OL, and I think that will begin w/ FA. I am so interested to see how we attack the OL in FA, and believe it will have a major impact on the draft.

Nfo I too am looking forward to the FA period because there have been some interesting names being released in the last couple of days and with LJ Shelton being one of them I like the increase of the talent pool on just the O-line.The thing that JA must take into account is that Parcells will also be a big player in this area and if there is someone he covets he will go after them very aggressively especially if they are big.Parcells tends to go after large O-linemen and D-linemen.

  12. I think Mendenhall has good potential but if you watched the Rose Bowl his main short coming was exposed big time and that is blocking and more telling was his inability to pick up the blitz. The USC LB whose name I can't pin point wearing number 58 went pass Mendenhall on several plays to tackle Juice Williams for sacks. This is one reason why both Grossman and Griese were getting tattoed on the blitz this year because Benson was poor on picking up the blitz. This means that if the Bears drafted any back he would not see the field until they were sure he could pick up the blitz. For an example look how long it took for Garrett Wolfe to get any significant playing time.If benson doesn't get hurt he still would have been relegated to special teams.

With that being said if you want to go after a back that is a home run hitter and can carry the load South Florida's Smith is the one that warrants a strong look and he along with Rutgers Rice have entered the draft as Juniors.

  13. With Orton taking over at Quarterback it is obvious that the Bears (while not mathematically eliminated) are looking towards next season. The question is should the Bears start to take a similar route with the offensive line?

Terrance Metcalf has shown that he clearly isn't capable of being a good offensive lineman. He is a valuable backup and I'd imagine based on his minimal cap figure we will see him back next year (in a backup role) but my question is should the Bears go out and give Beekman a chance (I think he was drafted out of ISU this past year). My immediate thought is yes, however, it should only be if he is ready because if Beekman is clearly worse than Metcalf you do run the risk of making a porous offensive line even worse which will actually hurt the evaluation of Kyle Orton (which has to be the most important position that the Bears are looking at for next year, at least on the offensive side of the ball).

I think you can make a similar case when it comes to cutting down Moose's time. They obviously will not hamper with Berrian's playing time and Bernard is in a contract year and it would be a horrible decision to take away from his final season and would possibly be something that causes burned bridges and would eventually prevent the Bears from being able to resign Bernard (ie, him not playing would hurt his stats and lead him to getting a smaller contract on the FA market). The question is do you gain a lot more by playing someone like Hass (obviously Bradley should play more, because this is probably his last season with the Bears if he can't show some flashes these last couple games) or do you server Kyle better by keeping out the steady veteran presence (ie Mush).

It will definitely be interesting to see how Lovie/Ron balances the offense (how much more do we see Wolfe) over the course of the next three games. I know I'm real excited to see what Kyle can do and to see if Wolfe/Hester can turn into some nice playmakers on offense (I've slammed Wolfe all season, but I must admit he looked shockingly solid last week).

I think the question should be Beekman or Garza? We know what Garza can or can't do and it might be wise to see if Beekman and Metcalf are worth roster spots.According to Lovie he likes the backups to learn both positions LG and RG also theres Oakley who should get a look also. I truly would like to see more of St.Clair at the expense of Miller.

  14. Angelo will not trade up to draft a O-linemen and has only drafted one in the firstround throughout his tenure.Add Metcalf and he has only drafted two linemen on the first day period.I would not draft Brennan because of the offense he has played in in college doesn't translate well to a conventional NFL offense.I base my opinion on his predecessor Timmie Chang who had monster numbers also.I think he would have the same trouble once he has to move under center. This is similar to the problems Texas Tech QBs have had coming to the NFL. The Bears need help at safety but must find one that can cover and tackle. The LSU safety fits that mode and follows a mini trend that this school is becoming known for following the Landry brothers. The last 3 games will show us whether we need to draft a RB again because its obvious that Benson cannot be a 25 carry back so the need to have a stud may be important. I would add another back this offseason.
