I still can't believe what I watched in the Texans game for the Bears to get the #1 pick. The Colts ended up 0-1-1 vs the Texans, even the tie was all that was needed for the Bears to get the 1st pick because if the Texans and Bears tied, the Bears would've picked #2 due to SoS.

Adam if the Bears and Texans tied the Bears would have picked 2nd because they beat the Texans head to head.

Hester needs to be in the Hall of Fame before they roll out his Football Life Documentary.   There will be footage from the announcement and then induction weekend and speech that need to be in it.

With regards to Edelman there isn't even a hint of him getting into the Hall of Fame so they can safely create his documentary.  Everyone knows Hester is going to be enshrined it's just a question of when, not if.

So if you follow the series of A Football Life is there any other non hall of fame player featured?

IMO I believe that Calvin Johnson and Edgerrin James are not HOF players.

Let me put this another way:

There are the only four players currently on our roster who cost more to cut than to keep.

Everyone else on the roster you GAIN cap room if you cut or trade them. In other words, everyone on the roster's dead cap money that you eat if you cut or trade them is less than their 2023 cap figure.

    These are the only exceptions:

Justin Fields, Kyler Gordon, Alex Leatherwood, Jaquan Brisker

you can cut any other player on the team and gain net cap space.

Even in the case of Eddie Jackson, he counts $17M against the cap in 2023, but only costs $9.5M in dead money to cut him. That means if you cut him, you GAIN $7.5M in cap room to find a replacement. If Jackson was a free agent, and you had $7.5M to sign a safety, and Jackson was asking for $7.5M a year would you be sure you would sign him and not someone else who is available at that price? Because that is the real question Poles is asking himself.

Gordon, Leatherwood and Brisker are all on super low deals anyway, so if you wanted to cut them, you could do it easily with no cap pain. (we aren't cutting Gordon or Brisker but we could easily afford the right trade if it came along)

Fields is literally the only one who you NEED to keep. The rest is Poles' playground.

SO identifying who you want to keep on our roster isnt just about whether they played well, its about who else is out there, because we could afford to replace everyone on this team with someone else at the same price (except Fields). Not saying we should, but each of those decisions depends on the list of players available league wide - not just how well they did for us this year.

We will never be in this position again. 2023 going into 2024 we will be thinking which pieces you build on. But right now, it's a unique year, and we dont need to think that way at all.

Right now, we are an expansion team heading into year 1, except we have Fields, and right of first refusal on our current players.

When the Jaguars came into the modern salary cap era as an expansion team, they went to the AFC Championship game the next year. i think they got an extra first round pick.

Let's say we are there, and already used the bonus first pick on Fields and he got two years of experience arleady. OK one, but you know what I mean LOL We still have the #2 pick too.

We were in this position in 2017. To say we won't be in this position again is unrealistic. In 2017 we had the 3rd pick and traded up for Trubisky.

Ouch, sucks for Lance. He had a 2nd surgery to remove hardware put in for the first surgery. Never a good sign. Pick was a reach before but worse now. He has 102 passing attempts over the last 3 years.

They seem to be still in the hunt with UDFA Purdy playing QB and its only Karma that they get fleeced on a trade up for a QB in the draft after they got Pace the same way.

  5. All but 2 of Poles 11 picks have received playing time this season. Carter and Kramer both interior OL. The last to receive playing time is Hicks. This is not counting UDFAs that have received playing time, Sanborn, Jones and Blackwell.

FAs Jones has been up and down. Mohamed (sp?) has been nonexistent. Morrow is actually playing above expectations IMO. The entire WR group brought in via FA and trade has been a big disappointment. The OL FA acquisitions have been meh. The hold overs Whitehair, Borom, Mustipher and Jenkins should not be starters next season. I know that Jenkins has grade well per analytics when he has been available to play but availability is the problem.

The in-season trades have been the most scrutinized part of this season. The defense has been a source of frustration for fans but, the trades plus the injuries exposed the lack of experience and depth. What do you do with Eddie Jackson? I say bring him back. Brisker, Gordon(outside) and Jaylon Johnson(Trade candidate) are a base but, a FA and draft pick needs to be added to the mix.

We played a few games without Johnson and he doesn't create turnovers, which is why I think he could be a trade candidate.

This offseason will put Poles in the national spotlight.

That was terrible.  However, the coaches should have never put him on that position in the first place.  The special teams coach should have made that call for him.  The side wind was terrible down there, so it was the correct call.  Just should never put the player in that position.

The fact that he had to be asked again points to Special Teams Coach. This coach has made questionable decisions all season long.

CAR is currently drafting 8th. Would you take #8, a 2023 1st rounder, pick #39, and DJ Moore for the #2?

That allows you to still draft in the top 10, you get a top 10 2nd rounder back, an extra top 15 pick in 2023 and DJ Moore at WR.

The other team is IND, currently 6th. Would something similar and Buckner be worth it? So #6, a 2023 1st rounder, pick #37 and DeForest Buckner for #2 be worth it? The player is basically replacing another 1st rounder like SF did when they traded up for Lance.

I think both Washington and NO could be in need also.

  8. The defense actually rose to the occasion and Fields can make Chicken salad out of Chicken poop. I'm watching him take the snap and Cody Whitehair continuously whiff on the outside in stunts that the Eagles kept running. Leatherwood is not an OT. Try him at LG and tell Whitehair you're moving in another direction. Jaylon Johnson is a top CB.

  9. Agreed! Seeing him shying away from that FGA was disturbing. Our special teams have made critical mistakes in most of the one score losses.

Chris Dunn of NC State and Jake Moody should be targets in the draft for Poles. The last 2 Groza Award winners. Moody kicked in the Midwest at Michigan.

People don't like to admit they were wrong, especially on things they said publicly.  The passing numbers haven't been there yet and only Bears fans really know the details of the improvement in Fields.  We can see the improved pocket presence, faster reading of the defense, better throwing mechanics, and all those things done while the WR corps and Oline have been rotating players in/out all season long.

Agreed and the other thing he has improved on, is looking to pass before running. He has made some nice completions on the run in recent games.

The Bears had a nice mini-bye and 1st game back, so let's see how they do after their real bye.

Herbert may be back, Brisker and Gordon should be. The O-Line may be more solidified with Leatherwood at RT. This will be the first time to really put some plays in for Claypool as the WR1.

The two games out of the bye will be good tests for the Bears, and we will get to see Hurts and Allen at Soldier Field. BUF is #1 in DVOA and PHI is #3. DAL is #2, so these games will probably end up like the DAL game.

I don't care if they lose at this point, but it would be nice to have competitive games with at least a chance to win late.

It would be really cool if Fields breaks Jackson's rushing record, he needs 302 in 4 games (76 yds a game) to break the record.

The Bears also need 838 yds to break the Ravens single season record of 3296 rushing yards for a team. Both are still in play with how much they are running this year.

After the Rams win, the Bears will be watching the following games, hoping for some upsets:

    JAX (4-8) at TEN

    CAR (4-8) at SEA

NE at ARZ (4-8) on MNF

    How about KC at Denver?

  12. I'm wondering how many on this board were around when Mugsy Halas hired Jim Finks because this seems eerily similar. He came into a similar mess and built from the ground up. Of course the NFL is a lot different now but, I'm getting a similar vibe right now. Finks was awesome as GM and drafted a few HOF players. The one move he made that I didn't like was a first round pick for Mike Phipps. Regardless he built the Bears into a Super Bowl contender with great drafting.

Ryan Poles has an opportunity to do it even better and faster so we as fans need to see what he can do. This year was on the fly!

  13. Currently the Bears are in the 2nd draft position which is the highest they have been pre trade since their 1969 1-13 season. That is Will Anderson and Jalen Carter territory. A king's ransom can be had though if a QB needy team with draft capital wants to move up. Pittsburgh is now a 4 win team. This hands down is going to be one of the most interesting off seasons since I have been on this board.

  14. Expect the Lions to go after Vildor as all teams do and Jaylon Johnson was targeted with success a few times last week.

Against Tua in the middle of the 3rd Qtr , the defense got him off of his spot a few times resulting in incompletions.

Against Goff, who has played here before when the weather wasn't idea, they need to come after him because he is not a threat to run. That will be accomplished by pressuring him up the middle

That entire Colts situation and how the GM Chris Ballard got put on the sideline by the owner is an interesting story.  It was just last year they were a team on the rise with 9 wins and 2nd place in their division.  Unfortunately Ballard brought the Chicago QB luck with him (and lost Luck).  I don't understand the whole Jeff Saturday situation with him never coaching in the league.  Even if he's capable of leading a team, that seems like someone who is way underprepared for that job to just walk in midseason.  Compare that to Eberflus who seems to have pre-planned for everything from the details of each practice to exactly what happens during bye weeks.

Supposedly he has been a team consultant for a while Also he is real friendly with Irsay.

Maybe if you draft a guy and develop him like Manning and Luck, we are not talking about this.

  16. I've been around long enough to have seen the legendary QB Bobby Douglass ( who held the single season rushing record for a QB when he played) and I saw the guy that he truly reminds me of and that's former Bears/ Raiders QB Vince Evans. Evans was a draft pick by Jim Finks in the (6th or 7th round?) out of USC. He was a scrambling QB with a strong arm that I remember playing in one of the most physical Thanksgiving games ever between the Bears and Cowboys. The year was 1979 and Evans was the Bears starting QB at the time and he stuck around long enough to be the guy to throw Willie Gault's first TD reception of 57 yards against the Colts at Soldier Field in 1983.

The comparison is the athletic ability and his toughness, In the game I mentioned above, Evans was getting hit hard and by the end of the game, he was limping up to center.

    That's who Field's is.
