If we don't think there is a QB worthy of a top 3 pick (and by we, I mean the Bears brass), then I think we are absolutely better off moving down. I think there are 2-3 safeties worthy of being top 10 picks (just not #3 overall picks) and I think we'd be able to get a difference making safety if we drop back a bit and then address corner early in the second round while also looking at offense. That said, some of this depends on what we do via free agency. I am a big fan of who you have getting drafted (Peppers is #3 on my list of safeties as I'd much rather have Hooker / Adams, but if both were gone, I'd have no problem at Peppers..talented and fills a need), although I doubt Watson falls that far. I think when push comes to shove, at least 3 QB's go in the 1st round and Watson will be one of them. If we move down from #3, I could also see us looking at OT...while I think Bama's tackle has top 3 talent, there are other issues that prevent me from being willing to invest that high in him.

Adams and the Ohio State safety (Malik Hooker) are both safer picks then Peppers, imo. That said, Peppers clearly has a ton of athleticism that he could become great, but I just didn't' see enough out of him when it mattered. Adams and Hooker both showed it on the field. I would love to have them on the Bears and I'd pick them over most everyone else, but as I've said numerous times, I can't justify a safety at 3...to me we take QB or trade down.

Agree with your sentiments...that said, if somehow McCoy wants to come here as an assistant head coach, great. I would think he'd want a spot where he had better upside. I could see if we had a young QB, who he could come in and spend a lot of time with and get credit that way, but otherwise, seems like the upside is more limited. Unless of course Fox tells him that we intend to bring in a young QB, etc. Developing a young QB is one of the quickest ways to get a head coaching job again. McCoy would be a fantastic hire, I just don't see him coming here (would think there were far better places to go).

Sounded like it has to do with the fact that he wants to go back to the line. IIRC, we blocked him from taking a position a year ago (think it was to go join Gase in Miami, but maybe it was a college job), so I presume he had other opportunities that were more interesting to him. I agree with you though, he is a good coach.

He is really really good and I think he'd be a great fit, but taking a safety at 3 is just something I can't get behind.

He's also supposed to be pretty intelligent and hard working. I was the guy who wanted Winston badly on this site and I still wish we had Winston. I don't think Kizer is Winston (I am still fairly confident, at worse, Winston will be a slightly above average QB) in the sense that Winston probably had a higher floor.

By the way, I too wanted Moss badly. Moss would have still been good though...clearly wouldn't have put up as ridiculous numbers, but he'd have been good. Kramer wasn't terrible...those other guys were. Kramer was on his last legs at that point though.

Moss would have been great anywhere. Guy was a machine and Leaf was and is a total moron. He'd have sucked everywhere. Same with McNown or Jamarcus Russell...moron is moron. Now I do agree if you look at like Akili Smith or better yet David Carr, you never know how they could have been if they went somewhere else. But when guys are total unregarded idiots, they are going to be that way no matter what.

I bet 2 of the top 3 picks are QB's. Last year this time, there was no top QB, next thing you knew there were two massive trade-ups and the top 2 picks were QB's. The position is so important and plenty of teams near the top of the draft, including the first 3 teams, have massive needs at the position.

I'm not talking about the stats...I'm talking about the physique. Watson is a great athlete, but Cam was absurd...literally absurd. He's in an athletic class of his own. If all we looked at were stats, Timmy Chang, Danny Wuerfell, and Colt Brennan would be some of the greatest QB's in NFL history. Cam...6'5 245 (and I don't believe that for a second...he's bigger then that) Watson...6'2 209 Cam also has a ton of arm strength, etc. He was also a lot more raw vs. Watson. By the way, I'm not saying Watson can't be a good pro, he very well could be, I'm just saying he's not the same prospect as Cam Newton. I don't know of any QB who is like Cam. I might compare Rodgers & Brady, but from a pure physical talent perspective, Rodgers physical gifts are absurd.

He had worthless receivers this past year, but he also looked nothing of the part of being an NFL QB. Ricky Stanzi looked a lot more the part (when I think of Iowa QB's) and he didn't do much in the NFL.

Agreed. Any QB taken early is going to take his lumps. It is just the facts of life. The key is you need everything else to be working right and everyone to be on board. If the scouts look and say one of these guys is a franchise QB, then you aren't moving down in the draft, you are taking them at #3 overall (it is never an overdraft if you are taking a guy you think is a franchise QB at #3). QB is the most important position in the game...don't try and get cute...you take the guy, hands down. The delicacy is the confidence interval you put in that player being a franchise QB and the lower the interval, the less likely you are to take the player @ 3. I always laugh at the, just wait and we can get our franchise QB later. Maybe you get lucky, but the reality is, if teams think a guy is a franchise player, he's going in the 1st round. Scouts whiff all the time (on top 5 QBs and other 1st round QB's) but the vast majority of franchise QB's are 1st round picks. If a guy has shown that flash, teams aren't waiting because of the importance and way more 2nd / 3rd round QB picks don't ever amount to anything then 1st round QB picks.

I think your 1st two picks are relatively realistic. I would love King in the 2nd round and Kizer is the QB I'd want.

I'm a diehard Hawkeye fan and I wouldn't touch Beathard. I can't even figure out why people refer to him and the NFL draft. I mean I don't see a problem drafting him to see if he can be backup, but using a 6th or 7th round pick to address a major QB need is not the answer.

You are really comparing Watson with Cam Newton?

Evidently the players weren't big fans of his and that is why he is on the way out. I didn't think our performance was indicative of a guy needed to get the ax. He was a long time assistant of Fox (back in Denver too, IIRC). Not sure if he was with him in Carolina as well.

Polian also said if he had his choice, he'd trade for McCarron (because he has won in high leverage situations before) over Jimmy G. The Bengals supposedly turned down a 2nd and 4th for him last year. He was a guy I wanted the Bears to draft years ago.

I wonder if a trade centered around Alshon Jeffrey + 3rd and like 5th round pick makes sense (or something like that). Michael Floyd playing so well in New England, might have minimized the potential value / need they had at wideout with Jeffrey though.

You watched the rose bowl and are talking about Penn State's QB vs. USC's QB? USC's QB looked like a total stud. McSorley on the other hand, played well, but didn't at all look the part of an NFL QB. In general, his arm strength is suspect and he is not known for being overly accurate. The turnovers he had were pretty poor too, especially that pick that set-up the game winning score for USC. Patriots timed things perfect to move Jimmy G. With the draft class so bad, it is why I think we absolutely need to address QB via trade (or go with Romo and take a later round flyer and re-evaluate QB again in a year). I don't see how they can keep their jobs if they stick with Hoyer and a late round flyer in a weak draft....just to be back a year ago. They put themselves in this mess when they passed in last years draft (despite all those 4th round picks).

You & I might disagree on Jimmy G, but I think we can both agree, no matter what, we need to target a real solution at QB now. Whether that is in the draft or via trade. By the way, I should point out, I would not have supported signing Osweiler a year ago, but I do like Jimmy G (because I think his tools are superior across the board...he's got a strong arm, quick release, is accurate, and appears relatively poised. He's also learned from the best. If a Mariotta or someone like that were in this draft, I'd opt to draft a QB vs. being so pro Jimmy G trade (because the value of the cap savings would be nice), but I just don't see that player in the draft. If someone put a gun to me, I'd still be okay with Kizer / Trubinsky because I don't think we have the luxury of waiting on the QB position another year. As a fan, maybe they can deal with another bad season while we build other parts and then go QB, but you have to remember Pace / Fox have their jobs on the line, and with that, I just don't see how they can ignore QB, unless the "ignore" is using Romo as a temporary solution.

I would never ever in a million years send a top 15 pick for Jimmy G. I would hope our 2nd and a 4th could get it done and if it took a 1st, we'd have to move down and accumulate other assets. If it took the 3rd overall pick, I would never in a million years suggest it. I was surprised Magazu isn't being retained (I don't know if it was a mutual thing and he is looking for something else or if he was just let go though).

Just cause he was Brady's backup doesn't make him not the best option. This is a guy who after being a relatively high draft pick, hasn't actually had his value crash or do anything that makes people think he can't start vs. so many other guys. This is a guy who was drafted and thus far, looks like a guy who can be much better then the position he was drafted. There isn't a QB in this draft who has a better chance to succeed in the NFL then Jimmy G does. That isn't to say Jimmy G is a sure thing...none of these guys are, but Kizer / Trubisky are only two with all the physical tools and they have a lot of things that lack desire. Watson is way to iffy (not to say he can't change). Jimmy G is the best of available talents.
