Agreed. I get annoyed with the draft talk before FA. Cutler has talked about wanting a big target like Brandon Marshall. Vincent Jackson & possibly Bowe are available. I'll be shocked if we don't make a run at a big WR's. We sign Jackson, no way we draft a WR in round #1. That makes the WR draft talk moot.
I'm curious how Webb & Carimi's grade out. Are we looking for replacements or competition? If they're the future, you don't take a tackle in round #1.
Then what about DeCastro at G?
-
Colston or Nicks from Saints.. cant franchise 'em both
Yes, that would be nice, Nicks from Saints, Bowe from KC and we are looking sweet.
-
not Top5 ??? really
Yes, I would take Welker, Colston, Bowe, V. Jackson, and Wallace over him.

Breakdown of Angelo's drafts:
2002: Alex Brown (4th), Adrian Peterson (6th)
Overall this was a bad draft, but Gray and Metcalf contributed in spirts for the first few years and then fell off. AB was a highly touted pass rusher who everyone passed on because they thought he was a headcase....far from true. Adrian Peterson is about as good as it gets in the 6th Round. However, missing as badly as he did on Colombo considering how bad his knee was coming in and getting NOTHING out of Ro Williams.....this draft was a D+ at best.
2003: Rex Grossman (1st), Charles Tillman (2nd), Lance Briggs (3rd)
This could have been Terrell Suggs at 4 as many Bear fans wanted.....but Suggs went 10th. Angelo dealt down to 13 hoping to get Jimmy Kennedy and put some young size in front of Urlacher but he went 12th to the Rams (and flopped). Haynes was as big of a bust as you'll find, but that was a shock to many scouts. He looked like Tarzan and played like Tarzan at Penn St, but played like Jane with the Bears. Rex didn't become what Bears fans had hoped, but he had his moments including helping the Bears to the Super Bowl in 2006 and that can never be taken away. Tillman and Briggs were absolute homeruns in this draft, which may have been Angelo's best picks. I give this draft a B.
2004: Tommie Harris (1st), Tank Johnson (2nd), Bernard Berrien (3rd), Nate Vasher (2004)
I'm sorry but this was a hell of a draft. If it weren't for the injuries of Tommie Harris and Vasher (Both Pro Bowlers) falling out of football shape at the age of 26 and never getting back to it....they would have been starters even last season. Those guys helped make us a great defense in 2005/2006. Tank was a monster, but his legal problems came out of nowhere and that hurt him in Chicago. Berrien produced about as well as 3rd Rounders produce. All four of these guys cleared out way sooner than they should have and that really isn't on Angelo. I give this draft a B+.
2005: Kyle Orton (4th), Chris Harris (6th)
The Ced Benson pick may have been Angelo's worst pick. Sure Benson has shown his Pro Bowl type talent in Cincy, but the Bears didn't need him! This could have been Derrick Johnson (however he went 15h I believe), but many Bears fans wanted him at 4 or a trade down to where it wasn't even worth it could have worked. The rest of this draft was absolute garbage. Harris was a steal in the 6th and contributed basically immediately and Orton did a fine job during his tenure in Chicago and helped the Bears finally land a real franchise QB in Cutler. However, this draft is a big reason why the Bears missed the playoffs 4 out of the last 5 seasons as it just didn't provide anything for the Bears to fall back on after their impressive '05 and '06 seasons. I give this draft an F.
2006: Danieal Manning (2nd), Devin Hester (2nd), Jamar Williams (4th), Mark Anderson (5th)
Hester may have been the pick of the draft as he quickly became the best return man the game as ever seen. I credit Angelo on that pick because he knew Hester didn't have a position, but didn't care. Angelo said he was "Hesterized" at the combine and had to get him- boy was he right. Manning flopped as a Safety, but still is a top flight KR. I've even heard his play draw positive praise as a S in Houston (although I'll believe that when I see it). Jamar Williams and Mark Anderson were explosive athletes, but Mark Anderson was a flash in the pan who fooled us all. While this draft had a few bad misses- Hester has won more games on Special Teams than any player in the history of the game. I give this draft a B.
2007: Gren Olsen (1st), Corey Graham (6th)
This draft was another utter failure. Olsen was a mixed result as a TE because he was a 1st Round pick. I do believe Olsen got a bit of a raw deal with the hiring of Martz- Olsen had plenty of opps to make Martz change the game to fit him, but Olsen didn't seize thos chances. I don't even want to talk about Bazuin and GARRET WOLFE IN THE 3RD so I'll leave it alone. This draft was a clear F.
2008: Chris Williams (1st), Matt Forte (2nd), Earl Bennett (3rd), Kellen Davis (5th)
This was a great draft, but it pains me that we turned the 14th pick of the draft into an average G (I know peeps on this board love Williams inside, but I don't). Forte may have been Angelo's best pick as GM and this pick could have saved everyone's job for the next few years. Bennett is potentially a steal in the 3rd, but I think very highly of this pick. Kellen Davis was a very nice find in the 5th and I believe his best days are ahead of him. Without Forte this draft is a C at best, but with Forte....this draft is a B+.
2009: Henry Melton (4th), DJ Moore (4th), Johnny Knox (5th), Lance Louis (7th)
Since this draft got us Cutler.....I loved this draft! However, Angelo screwed the pooch in trading out of the 2nd Round and ending up with two guys in the 3rd who never came close to contributing. Melton and Moore are players that I love and Knox is a guy who has produced beyond his element. Lance Louis may be the best pick of this draft should he play as we all love him as a G and I don't hate him at RT, either. Mainly because we got Cutler out of this AND still got some nice players....this draft is a B+
2010: J'Marcus Webb (7th)
Again this draft gets SOME credit because the 1st Rounder contributed to Cutler. However, I'll say it right now....Wright is a bust. He's slow. Really slow. It is still a bit too early to write guys off like Wooten and Moore, however time may be running out on them as they've seen limited action the past two seasons to where they should have seized opps by now. Webb was a great find in the 7th, but this draft has had two years now and I don't see it contributing. Angelo traded the 2nd Round of this draft to the Bucs for Gaines Adams, which I was a huge fan of at the time. I am going to give this draft a C primarily because it helped get Cutler and I believe Adams would have really helped the Bears.
2011: Gabe Carimi (1st), Stephen Paea (2nd), Chris Conte (3rd)
This draft gets an Incomplete because it is far too early and I believe Carimi's injury really hurt the Bears. I like what I saw in limited action from Paea and I really liked what I saw from Conte. This could still be a fine draft, but it smells like Angelo's 1st draft IF Carimi turns into Colombo.
My overall grade for Angelo in his 10 drafts: C-
He inherited a HOF player in Urlacher and never drafted another one.
A source for all of the Bear drafts:
Never drafted another? Hester is a shoe-in HoF, and Briggs is well on his way. I think JA was middle of the pack in drafts, he actually did better in later rounds, but essentially flopped in the 1st round picks where we should've had impact starters almost every year. You also have to give him credit for bringing in Cutler and Peppers. Those were two nice acquisitions. In the same breath, you have to chastise him for Manu, Chester, and Roy Williams. I thought overall he did decent with the defense acquisitions, but failed on the offensive side of the ball.
I would've given him an overall grade of C+, but for the Bears franchise, we cannot accept the middle of the road.

Made two small changes:
If I was the Bears, my (realistic) big board would be:1) Reily Reiff, OT, Iowa
2) Jonathan Martin, OT, Stanford
3) Michael Floyd, WR, Notre Dame
4) David DeCastro, G, Stanford
5) Dre Kirkpatrick, CB, Alabama
6) Kendall Wright, WR, Baylor
7) Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin
8) Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois
Moved Floyd up to #3 and put DeCastro in there in place of Adams. Is Adams even projected for the first round?
-
THis is one thing that I think is mostly on Angelo...because a whole lot of the defensive talent that was brought in were guys that Angelo tried to "Steal" by drafting a round or two early. Bazuin, Okwo, Harrison come to mind at the front of that list.
Yeah I questioned those picks too, but he does have a better track record on the defensive side of the ball: Tillman (2), Briggs (3), Conte (3), A. Brown (4), Steltz (4), DJ Moore (4), M. Anderson (5), Z. Bowman (5), C. Harris (6).
-
No scout has been right all the time? Get over it people. Its about a track record. Every GM has had busts and you guys all harp on the various busts and fail to talk about the hits.
That was from the article, I think JA did a great job on defensive talent.
-
Emery’s first job in the NFL was with the Bears as an area scout from 1998 to 2004. His responsibility was the Southeast, where he scouted quarterback Rex Grossman, who led the Bears to the Super Bowl in the 2006 season.
So scouting and recommending Rex Grossman is seen as a good thing?
-
Someone is guilty by association? That argument is pretty pathetic. Ruskell can't and shouldn't be judged because someone you don't like brought him in. As far as I'm concerned, Angelo had this team in a superbowl and an NFC Championship game and put together and maintained a well above average defense for years. People spout about how shitty he was but that is pure crap. Was he the best, no? But there is a reason he kept his job as long as he did and no, I don't buy that the Bears are the worst run organization in the league or anything even close to that.
Look at all of the teams that have consistently sucked. The Bears were nothing but competitive during Angelo's run. Some seasons better than others, but they were perennial playoff contenders and at times, were legit superbowl contenders. That is pretty freaking decent.
How many QB's did we start during his tenure? Just like in Tampa Bay, Angelo was always good at finding defensive talent, but was completely inept at finding offensive talent, especially at QB and WR. He was decent for the most part, but I believe he needed to be replaced a few years ago.
About the Super Bowl appearance, 14 different teams have made a SB appearance since 2001 (almost half the league). 10 teams have had multiple Conference Championship visits during that timeframe, with 5 of those teams winning it all (6th will be this year). Only the Eagles (5), Bears (2), Jets (2), and Panthers (2) have multiple Conference Championship appearances without a SB victory.
For a franchise ranking during Angelo's reign, it would go something like this (giving 5 pts for SB win, 3 for SB loss, 2 for Conf loss, 1 for winning season):
1. Patriots (3 SB wins, 1 SB loss, 1 Conf loss, 11 winning seasons) *Pending this year (31*)
2. Steelers (2 SB wins, 1 SB loss, 2 Conf Champ losses, 9 winning seasons) (26)
3. Colts (1 SB win, 1 SB loss, 1 Conf Champ loss, 9 winning seasons) (19)
4. Eagles (1 SB loss, 4 Conf Champ losses, 8 winning seasons) (19)
5. Packers (1 SB win, 1 Conf Champ loss, 8 winning seasons) (15)
6. Giants (1 SB win, 6 winning seasons)* Pending this year (11*)
7. Saints (1 SB win, 1 Conf Champ loss, 5 winning seasons) (12)
8. Ravens (2 Conf Champ losses, 8 winning seasons) (12)
9. Jets (2x Conf Champ losses, 7 winning seasons) (11)
10. Buccaneers (SB victory, 6 winning seasons) (11)
11. Bears (SB loss, Conf Champ loss, 5 winning seasons) (10)
12. Seahawks (1 SB loss, 6 winning seasons) (9)
13. Titans (1 SB loss, 5 winning seasons) (8)
14. Chargers (1 Conf Champ loss, 6 winning seasons) (8)
15. Falcons (1 Conf Champ loss, 6 winning seasons) (8)

Really?
I know some might be franchised and/or re-signed, but here are a few:
Welker, Colston, Bowe, V. Jackson, Wallace, Wayne
and then the next tier would be guys like:
Lloyd, Simpson, D. Jackson, Meachem
I would say Johnson is somewhere in between those two groups, and his antics are on par with Ocho and TO.
-
He is not even a top 5 FA WR option, I'll pass.
-
Licht would bring some fresh new perspectives into the organization, and he definitely knows what a perennial SB contender looks like. Like some others have mentioned, if Emery was that good, why has he not been offered a GM position before?
According to this guy, Licht is in his top for 10 GM Candidates (#7):
-
No one guy is going to make a huge impact, but I believe anyone will be better than JA at this point. Just by removing him and Martz, we gained 2 wins.
-
"… To do that you have to have the ability to check at the line of scrimmage, you have to have the ability to have a short passing game. And then I'm a no-huddle guy and we don't have no huddle. … I want to be able to go no huddle and change the rhythm offensively."
Check at the line of scrimmage? No-huddle? OMG, that alone is going to be an upgrade for this offense.
-
I must have missed where Julius Peppers and Jared Allen were 3-4 defensive ends. Suh and Raji both are more realistic 3-4 ends then those two. If anything they'd be outside linebackers.
Also, how does running a defense with 4 linebackers instead of 3 warrant Lance Briggs not being on the list? Hes been a probowler for like 7 consecutive seasons, including this one, yet he isnt good enough to be a top 4 linebacker in his own division? If you say its because he plays a 4-3 then how did Urlacher make it?
lol, I know. I was just being sarcastic. He is just giving his clear biased opinion. Briggs and Suh should've been on there for sure.

What if the top three OT (Martin, Reiff, Kalil) and the top three WR (Blackmon, Floyd, Jeffery) are off the board when the Bears pick?
Aside from being irritated that the Bears needlessly won the last game of the season and ruined their draft pick status, what are you thinking? BPA vs. need becomes a much more interesting question at that point. If this scenario happens, and we're all relatively upset, that could indicate that LBs are getting passed over and a few other nice prospects are falling.
Vontaze Bufict, LB, Arizona State
Luke Kuechly, ILB, Boston College
Dont’a Hightower, ILB, Alabama
Trent Richardson, RB, Alabama
Whitney Mercilus, DE, Illinois
Peter Konz, C, Wisconsin Badgers
Janoris Jenkins, DB, North Alabama
Suppose that list is available. BPA doesn't make a ton of sense since it's obviously Richardson. At that point, what should the Bears do?
Looking at mock drafts, and at other teams' needs and such, I would say that it is a very unlikely scenario. Kuechly, Hightower, and Richardson will all be gone before Jeffery.
Also, don't forget about Kendall Wright and David DeCastro. I would take one of them at 19 if the scenario you presented actually occurred. The other option would be to trade down to the mid-20's, and pick up another 3rd rounder. You could then take 2 of our 3 3rd rounders and move back into the 2nd. Giving us a 1st, 2x 2nds, and a 3rd, or we keep the 3rd, and go with 1 1st, 1 2nd, and 3 3rds.
IMO, I think we stay at 19 and pick up the BPA as long as it is WR, OL, and possibly CB depending on someone dropping.
-
No Briggs, Suh or Raji. Sweet list
It is because he is doing a 3-4 man, lol.
-
I would take Forte over Peterson for the ability to catch out of the backfield. For all the praise AP gets for his running and explosiveness, he had less yards per carry and per game than Forte. Also, with his torn ACL and MCL, I doubt he will ever be the same.
-
It is funny that guys like that have a job in the sports business. Just because they are controversial? They rarely bring up valid points and most of the time just talk out of their 4th point of contact.
-
I just didn't realize we were that bad (24th), but when I look back, we rarely had good starting position after a kickoff.
-
For some reason this popped into my brain today and I was surprised there wasn't more mentioned about this during the playoffs. Special teams only seemed to play negative roles in games (SF and BAL) compared to highlights of epic runbacks.
For the season, just from watching the games, you knew there would be an impact to most teams with good return games. Almost every other kickoff ended up as a touchback and the Bears would start around the 20 compared to the 30 or 35. So I was curious and looked at some various numbers. None of these are completely conclusive or tied directly to the new rule, but taken into context you can see that the new rule did indeed affect the Bears.
The Bears had the best Starting LoS in 2010 and dropped to 24th in 2011. They lost an average of 6.5 yards a drive, the biggest drop of any team. The next closest was KC at 6.19 yards and Pittsburgh, Arizona, and St. Louis all lost over 4 yards a drive as well. Only 7 teams had a better starting LoS than last year, and the teams that benefited the most were Houston, gaining 4.79 yards a drive, and SF gaining 4.71. The other 5 teams all gained less than a yard per drive.
The Bears had a starting LoS of 33.37 in 2010 and that dropped to 26.87 in 2011. Just to be sure that this wasn't a one year anomaly, I looked back at the past three years for the Bears, and they were first every year (32.31 in 2009, 33.48 in 2008, 34.43 in 2007).
For the entire league, kickoff returns dropped from 2033 in 2010 to 1375 in 2011. A total of 658 less kickoff returns, about 20 per team. The lowest return total was 46 (ATL) in 2010, and only 9 teams had more than that number this year. Atlanta only returned 24 kickoffs this year as a team and 21 players had more than their entire team.
So now I looked at the Bears; we only had two less returns than 2010 but averaged 4 less yards per return. Was it the loss of Danieal Manning or was it the rule? Manning only returned 13 for Houston and Houston as a team only returned 29 kickoffs, so the impact was not that big. With us only having two less returns, it seems like we ran some out of the end zone when it would've been better to take a knee.
Again, all of this could be circumstantial, but either the rule did impact the team or we really miss Manning on kickoffs.
Either way going from 1st to 24th in starting LoS didn't help the team much this year.

A decent article about Licht:
http://bostonherald.com/sports/football/pa...ars_gm_position
"Both organized and thorough in his approach, the personable Licht has worked under some of the league’s more prominent names like Jimmy Johnson, Andy Reid and now Belichick, where he plays a big part in keeping the Pats on top of the AFC standings. Licht has played a strong role with three different teams now and will likely find himself on several GM short lists in the near future. His eye for talent and overall personnel skills are why Bill Belichick brought him back to New England after a short stint with the Arizona Cardinals."My only concern about NE exec's is that Bill has so much influence on decisions, you don't know how much his disciples actually did in their positions.

Just landed in Mobile. #Bears HAVE NOT offered Phil Emery the job... Yet. I suspect another round of interviews

Yes, you are correct, I stand corrected. Hell, from what I have read, some are now putting Adams higher than Reiff and Martin.
