Biggest Surprises and Disappointments 2024 Edition
Bears4Ever_34 replied to adam's topic in Bearstalk
Jets have to be the biggest disappointments in years, probably since the Eagles "dream team." I didn't see either PIT or MIN playing as well as they have, given their QB situation. Mike Tomlin, once again, showing you why he's a top 5 HC. If Eberflus was the coach of that team, their record might be flipped. DAL and JAX was somewhat predictable, though maybe not quite to this extent. JAX lost Ridley and were already trending in the wrong direction at the end of last year. DAL pulled a CHI and brought back a lame duck HC who everyone thought was getting fired, and then lost Dan Quinn. Frankly, they've been beating up on their crappy division for years. They were due for a course correction. -
Week 12 Official Game Thread - for the 3 people watching

If Caleb comes out of this game without a turnover, he should be given a medal. Most likely will be the toughest test for him this season, given what Flores likes to do. I expect a very similar gameplan to today with a lot of screens and quick passes to avoid catastrophic sacks. -
This is one move I don't fault Poles for. I hated the Bates trade. At least Allen was coming off a career year, albeit at age 32. For a 4th round pick, I felt like that was fair compensation at the time, and the Bears didn't know if they'd be able to draft Odunze yet. Obviously, it's turned out to be a terrible decision, but didn't hate the reasoning behind it. It's bizarre how the drop off could be this significant in 1 season right after the best season of his career. Has to be the heel.

Maybe. It helps that he's 2 years older and has Sean Payton. He's having a good year, but doesn't possess any special traits. They've been doing a lot of the Commanders stuff with the short passing game, but Denver's defense has been great all season.
-
I still think when he's been at his best, he looks more dominate than any of the other rookie QB's have looked. The deep ball accuracy is the only glaring issue I'd put squarely on him. It needs to substantially improve. That said, the coaching deficit between Eberflus and Quinn/Payton cannot be overstated. It's bottom 5 vs top 10.

This organization always invents new ways to lose games and freak over their young quarterbacks. Caleb should already have 2 come from behind wins already as a rookie and his head coach blew both of them, just like he blew the 3 games last year with Fields at QB the year previous. Defense, once again blows a late lead. QB does his job saving the defense by getting them into FG range, and then, of course, their kicker fucks it up and the HC, mismanages the play before by punting on the opportunity to gain a couple more yards before calling a timeout. Packers are the luckiest organization ever. I'm convinced they could try to lose against the Bears and still win at this point. They were outplayed for the majority of the game and still won. freak them, freak this franchise, and freak Matt Eberflus. I can't wait until we never have to see him and Poles again.

Hey, at least Jayden Daniels is starting to come back down to earth a little bit He really hasn't been very good since coming back from his injury.

With Billings out, this feels like a game Lafleur will try to run it down our throats with Jacobs. Wouldn't be surprised if they gained over 200 yards on the ground. All I care about the rest of this season is mitigating as much damage as possible on Caleb. That means limiting his pass attempts to keep him from getting killed and running the ball more than 50% of the time. Just get him into next season healthy so Ben Johnson or Kingsbury have something to work with after the inevitable coaching reset in January.

Detroit is such a well oiled machine right now that if they weren't in the division, they'd be an easy team to root for. I've really admired what DeMeco Ryans has done in Houston. Big fan of what they did drafting Stroud and pairing him up with Will Anderson. They were an embarrassment after the Watson scandal, and within a year, they've become SB contenders. It's amazing what can happen when you hire a good coach. The Bears should try that sometime.

Totally agree about not playing Caleb until the OL gets healthier or Matt Eberflus and Waldron are fired. His HC seems to be on a mission to get his quarterback killed at the end of games. This is twice in two weeks they've allowed him to take hits in garbage time.

The information about Nate Davis was readily available online about Vrabel's disdain for his practice habits. The memo apparently didn't get to Poles. That was a mistake waiting to happen, and I called it out immediately the day he was signed. I'd love to know just how much background research Poles actually does on the players he signs or trades for, because Claypool and Davis were two pretty obvious poor character guys, and he pulled the trigger anyway.

For me, the choice for HC is either Johnson or Kingsbury, with Johnson being far and away the preferred favorite. Knowing the Bears, though, they won't even look at Johnson because of his supposed salary demands, and they'll pass on Kingsbury despite his connection to Caleb, because he's too Hollywood for a MaCaskey. It'll probably be another understated good-old-boy who speaks in cliches and acronyms.

Silver lining: Caleb has been sacked 18 times the last 3 games and somehow didn't turn the ball over once while trailing 99% of the time. That's really hard to do. He also hasn't thrown a touchdown since the London game. Put simply: We wasted a season of this kid's career because our idiot GM couldn't move off of an obvious bad coach that nobody would have hired had he been on the market. The irony that he said on the MaCafee show last year that he was hired to break a cycle, only to find himself continuing said cycle. Hate this for Caleb. I still have high hopes for him, but you really have to consider throwing Tyson Bagent to the wolves if they don't do anything about Eberflus the rest of this season while the O-Line continues to be in shambles.

DJ Moore's effort and body language has been a disgrace this season. If you watch JT Osullivan's videos, he's been on DJ's ass since pre-season half-assing his routes and not blocking downfield. At the very least, he should be suspended for a game and have his captain status revoked. That kind of behavior can never be tolerated and should be made an example of. Quite frankly, Rome is already better than him, and should be our #1. Keenan Allen is washed. If they could get a 2nd round pick for DJ, I certainly wouldn't be opposed to it.

Caleb has to go back to working his check downs. He's passing up too many open guys underneath in favor of hunting for a big play that never comes. For all the talk about him leaving the pocket too early coming in to the NFL, I actually think he's staying too long in the pocket now, and it's leading to too many negative plays. The fact that he's regressing in that area from the previous 3 weeks tells me it's a coaching issue. If Waldron can't get him to do it, you have to get somebody else that will drill that into his head, whether that's Brown or Joseph. This team is going to need a massive overhaul on the OL in the offseason. I think they need 5 new guys—4, for sure. Wright looks like a bust at RT.

Caleb's dad is taking passive aggressive shots at Eberflus and the Bears on X, in a tweet that he now deleted. Things are going great in Chicago.

Stevenson has reverted back to the first half of his rookie season when he was god awful. Jaylon Johnson is the best CB in football. The Bears have to have a reliable #2 capable of taking advantage of the opportunities that will inevitably come their way because nobody is throwing at Johnson, and Stevenson has done a horrible job so far this season proving he can be that guy.
-
I think we'll have a pretty good idea whether Eberflus is staying or going after these next 2 games. If they lose either one, it's highly unlikely this team can eclipse their win total from last season, which almost 100% guarantees he won't/can't be back, given what the expectations were going in to this season. The answer to the question though is Ben Johnson. Nobody is a close second behind him right now, although it would be hilarious if they hired Kingsbury after they passed on him for the OC job.
-
True. The Commanders had 480 yards of offense and had 2 touchdowns that were called back due to penalty. They were lucky this game wasn't over at halftime. Matt Eberflus is a bottom 10 head coach and Dan Quinn is top 10 right now with the job he's done with a bad roster. That's the difference with the two football teams. This team had their chance to upgrade in the off-season and declined. You reap what you sow. They never learn.
-
You encapsulated it perfectly. Matt Eberflus has 3 road victories in almost 3 years as a HC. He lost 3 games alone last year in historic fashion and somehow kept his job despite being gifted the #1 overall pick and an opportunity to reset the clock with the entire staff. He will always be the team's limiting factor in big games, especially within the division, where he might as well be coaching in a different league compared to Lafleur, OConnel, and Cambell. He's not even remotely in the same universe as those other 3. The players always deserve blame, but this was the most obvious coaching loss I've probably ever seen. They had 2 weeks to prepare for this game and scored 0 points in the 1st half, against one of the bottom defenses and worst secondaries in the entire NFL. The two biggest plays that lost them the game was the Kramer play at the goal line and the decision to not blitz the hailmary or guard against the deflected pass. That's not a player issue, that's 100% on the coaches, and they both occurred in the final 4 minutes of the game!
-
Of course Daniels gets the lucky hail mary. Of course, the Bears defense implodes after their QB leads what should have been a game winning drive. It has never been clearer that this team has a major coaching deficit issue, and this loss is 100% on Ryan Poles for not seeing the obvious in the off-season to get rid of Matt Eberflus. What a joke of a team.

Brisker and Gordon being out is scary news if Daniels decides to play. I think, even with Mariota, that makes the Commanders dangerous on offense. The secondary was lucky Jacksonville couldn't catch the ball in the endzone. Trevor Lawrence was doing some nice things until the lead just became too insurmountable. This Commanders team is much better running the ball than Jacksonville. I worry this could be a game the D gets exposed more than they have in the last year if those two are unable to play. And, yeah, Bears need to look at a Brisker replacement next year. I'm not re-signing an injury prone safety. Maybe there's a team in the off-season who'd be willing to give up draft capital for him. Otherwise, I'd just let him walk and collect the comp pick. Gordon, on the other hand, is a trickier situation. He's just as injury prone, but plays a more important position. He's a little like what we had with Bryce Callahan under Fangio. Good player, but just can't stay healthy. Not sure what to do with him.
