  3. Refrigerator’ Perry hospitalized in S. Carolina CHICAGO (AP)—Former Chicago Bears defensive lineman William “The Refrigerator” Perry is in serious condition at a South Carolina hospital, a spokeswoman said Tuesday. Perry, 46, was hospitalized to deal with complications from Guillain-Barre Syndrome, a chronic inflammation disorder of the peripheral nerves, the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune reported. Aiken Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Melissa Summer declined to give additional details Tuesday. Perry’s nephew, Purnell Perry, told the Sun-Times his uncle was admitted more than a week ago but was expected to recover. “They were making sure he was in pretty good health before they started treating him,” Perry said. A woman who answered the telephone at Purnell Perry’s home said William Perry had improved. “He’s doing fine, much better,” she said. She declined to give her name. Perry was a 300-pound plus defensive tackle for the Bears’ 1985 Super Bowl team and became famous when then coach Mike Ditka used him as a short-yardage fullback on goal-line plays. Perry crashed into the end zone for a TD in the Bears’ victory over New England in the 1986 Super Bowl. Perry’s agent relayed to the Bears that the former defensive tackle would be OK. The team said Tuesday night it would continue to monitor the situation. Guillain-Barre Syndrome is a rare condition that occurs when immune system cells mistakenly attack nerve cells that support the muscles. Symptoms include weakness or tingling in the legs, which may spread to the arms and upper body. In the most severe cases, GBS can lead to paralysis and death. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-p...p&type=lgns

  6. Obama taps Steelers’ Rooney as Irish ambassador WASHINGTON (AP)—President Barack Obama on Tuesday selected Pittsburgh Steelers owner Dan Rooney to be U.S. ambassador to Ireland, turning to a lifelong Republican who provided the Democrat critical campaign support during the White House race. The 76-year-old Rooney endorsed Obama over Hillary Rodham Clinton during Pennsylvania’s contentious Democratic primary; Clinton won the contest last April. Rooney later campaigned for him in Steelers country in western Pennsylvania, and Obama went on to win the state last November. The grandson of an Irish immigrant, Rooney in the 1970s helped found the American Ireland Fund, an organization that has raised millions for advocacy of peace and education in Ireland. His legacy is reflected in a Steelers-themed bar in a disused linen mill in one of the roughest parts of northwest Belfast. In announcing the nomination on St. Patrick’s Day, Obama called Rooney “an unwavering supporter of Irish peace, culture and education.” Obama said in a statement that he has confidence that Rooney and Secretary of State Clinton “will ensure America’s continued close and unique partnership with Ireland in the years ahead.” Rooney’s father, Arthur J. Rooney, founded the Steelers in 1933. The son took over the presidency of the team in 1975 and is a Hall of Fame owner. His Steelers won the Super Bowl this year, shocking the Arizona Cardinals 27-23 on Santonio Holmes’ tiptoe catch for a touchdown with 35 seconds to play. The “Rooney Rule,” which requires any team with a head coaching vacancy to interview at least one minority candidate, was developed by an NFL committee Rooney chaired. Rooney has also participated in labor negotiations between the league and players. Dan Rooney’s son, Art Rooney II, who took over as team president in 2003, said he was happy for his father. In a statement, Art Rooney said the Steeler operation will continue as they have in the past with the goal of winning another Super Bowl. Associated Press writer Shawn Pogatchnik contributed from Dublin, Ireland. http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-r...p&type=lgns
  7. I grew up in Dublin, played college ball in Dundalk and American College Dublin. When I was at Dundalk my coach was from Newry and we played against Newry in a "friendly" game at their gym once. I guarded a guy who was 6'11" in that game and I'm 6'1, lol. All our big men were out sick and I could jump higher that anyone else. I used my low center of gravity to force him to shoot from distance and held him to like 4 points. After that I transferred to American College and was taught English Composition by Dan Rooney's son Peter. The library there is also called the Rooney Library because Dan Rooney donated the money to maintain it. He gets my vote for sure
  8. Here's the story - INDIANAPOLIS -- Marvin Harrison refused to take a pay cut. The Indianapolis Colts couldn't afford to keep him without one. On Monday, the two sides reached agreement on one thing: Harrison will be a free agent. Agent Tom Condon told The Associated Press that Indianapolis has agreed to release the franchise's all-time leading receiver, although an official announcement is not expected until Tuesday or Wednesday. The decision comes one day after team president Bill Polian said he hoped to cut a deal that would keep Harrison in Indy. When Harrison said no, the Colts said farewell. "There was no hardball with this, just heartache," Polian told ESPN senior NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. "Basically, we were not able to come to any kind of agreement, it was not contentious and the Colts have agreed to release him," Condon said in a phone interview. It's not a surprising move because the Colts would save about $6 million, based on Harrison's base salary. They would still be charged for prorated bonuses from the $66 million deal he signed in December 2004. The Colts found it too expensive for a 36-year-old receiver coming off one of the least productive seasons of his career. Harrison ranks second in NFL history with 1,102 receptions, and the move will disappoint many Colts fans, who embraced Harrison as a favorite. They referred to Harrison, Peyton Manning and Edgerrin James as "The Triplets," and Harrison was one of the franchise's most identifiable player in the last decade. His penchant for toe-tapping catches along the sideline and incredible grabs in the middle of the field helped the Colts build one of the league's most successful franchises in this decade. But longtime teammates understood why Harrison wanted to become a free agent. "I think whatever Marvin chooses to do for himself, he has to do," center Jeff Saturday said Sunday night. "I love Marvin as a friend and as a teammate." Indianapolis took Harrison in the first round of the 1996 draft and when Manning arrived two years later, the tandem began a record-setting journey. They combined for more completions, yardage and touchdowns than any duo in league history. Harrison made eight Pro Bowls, won a Super Bowl ring, and his 14,550 yards rank fourth on the NFL's career list. He is No. 5 all-time with 128 TD catches and holds all major single-season and career receiving marks for the Colts. Over the past two seasons, though, Harrison hasn't been up to his usual standards. He missed all but five games in 2007 because of injuries, underwent offseason knee surgery and then caught 60 passes in 2008 -- far less than half of his NFL record 143 in 2002. Philadelphia police also believe one of Harrison's guns was used in an April shooting in his hometown. No charges were filed against Harrison, and the man who made the accusation was convicted on a misdemeanor charge of lying to police. On the field, Manning has looked more frequently for three-time Pro Bowl selection Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez, a first-round pick in 2007. Yet coaches and Polian insisted Harrison's skills had not deteriorated. "What I saw is a guy who is as quick as he's been, with the same hands, and he has the ability he's always had," new coach Jim Caldwell said Thursday at the NFL's annual scouting combine. And Polian insisted he still wanted Harrison back in his familiar No. 88 jersey. "Hopefully, we'll find a way to work through that [the contract]," Polian said Sunday. "I don't know if we will, but we hope to." They couldn't. Now Harrison will look for work elsewhere. Some have speculated that he would like to play with his hometown Eagles and former college teammate Donovan McNabb. The Colts will have a vastly different look next season. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3929284
  9. Hopefully he comes out of jail with a new appreciation for his freedom and his NFL career. Its a tough life lesson to learn but this just might be the best thing for Tank all things considered.
  10. Watching all this go down I turned to my friend and told him jokingly that Tank better play his ass off in the SuperBowl or they are gonna try to toss him in jail. Like I said it was a joke. I agree that people should be held responsible for their actions and anyone who has enough guns to go to war in their house definitely needs some type of counselling. It just seems sad that he ended up this way.
  11. Prior to the Bears vs Saints game in the playoffs the media was selling us the whole Americas team/Hurricane Katrina survivors sob story and making these guys out to be heros who had overcome so much. Right after the Saints loss they went after Reggie Bush for that booster scandal from his college days. Watching all this go down I turned to my friend and told him jokingly that Tank better play his ass off in the SuperBowl or they are gonna try to toss him in jail. Seeing this happen now I am definitely not laughing. They might make an example out of Tank after the Pacman thing. While I believe that everyone should be held responsible for his/her actions I think this could be a crushing blow for someone who has already apparently learned his lesson after witnessing the violent death of his best friend.
  12. Everytime he took the field Thomas Jones represented Chicago's hard working attitude and gave Bears fans something to cheer about for a few great years. I think the best way I ever heard it described was that he runs like he's got a chip on his shoulder. Good Luck with the Jets TJ!!!!!
