Duane Brown or Eric Fisher please. I'd love to be wrong and Borum is good there, but ooooof, the thought just scares me.

We can be skeptical but until we see the first game starters its all a reach. If you cant look at the changes as positive instead of tearing them apart, how good of a Bears fan are you ? Have fun or live in misery, I choose hope.
I haven't ripped anything, I've actually been accused of being too optimistic over on another board. We're just talking and I'm making parallels for reference sake. We don't know what Poles will do with 135M. Just because he didn't go fishing for whales this year doesn't mean he won't going forward. Most good teams have spent some good money in free agency to supplement what they've done in the draft.

Definitely not saying it's the only path. I want to see a balanced attack. I'm not trading picks for guys(yet anyway) and I'm not saying they shouldn't take chances on guys like Pringle either. I want a blend of all of it, draft picks, lottery pick signings, anddd a couple big marquee signings.

I think Poles also mentioned something about rebuilding the OL and so far he's really only added one starter. I'm optimistic about Poles, but that's only because I really want to be optimistic. We'll see what his approach is when he has 135M to play with. I'd be a little upset if he only targets the type of guys he did this year going forward. It's a very boom or bust approach. As much as I've defended all of the wide receivers, there's still some bust factor there too.
All I'm saying is if a guy like Deebo or Metcalf or Nelson, ya know, guys still in their prime, hit the market, Poles should jump next year.

Just looking back on Ryan Paces introductory press conference, he talked about building through the draft. I think it's far too early to determine what Poles is gonna do after 1 year.
Do I want or expect them to be the Rams who haven't had a 1st round pick in years, no, probably not....Buttttt as you can see, that can work.
I think there just needs to be balance. This year wasn't the year to spend a ton of money because you don't really know what you already have. When you're just a few pieces away, which hopefully this year establishes that, then you spend the money.
But yes, you gotta spend it wisely as well. Do I want them spending big money on a guy like Christian Kirk? No. But if guys like Metcalf, Deebo, or Q. Nelson become available? Guys with proven track records that still fit the window of what our window could be with Fields on his rookie contract, yes, do that.

Honestly, I'm not sure I'd like that. If Metcalf, a guy who is still going to be in his prime becomes available or a younger elite talent in their prime becomes available, you should make that move.

Ehhhhh, I don't think he's always gonna be "Thrifty." He's "Remodeling," as a watcher of home remodeling shows, you gotta tear it down to build it up and put money into it.
He also didn't have potentially 135 million dollars in cap space to work with this year. If he's simply thrifty with 135M then I'm gonna be upset.

Montgomery would and will be fine in this offense, buttt, he may not be the best fit.
The key word in "Wide zone blocking scheme" is wide. Running backs are gonna be asked to go out wide more and work outside of the tackle box. Obviously quicker runners will be able to get outside faster and will operate better in the wide zone.
I won't go as far as others have and call Monty a plodder, buttt, he's definitely not a burner. Monty ran a 4.63 40. Ebner, who is gonna be my surprise player for this year ran a 4.48.
Shanahan is the guy most known for the wide zone(his dad created it). Right now the 49ers SLOWEST RB on the roster runs a 4.49. They have A few guys in the 4.3s.

I feel like Adams post is about to get hijacked with talks of all the cap room we have in 2023 so I thought I'd branch off a bit and create that conversation here.
They have A TON of money and there are a lot of names out there right now. Most if not all will get franchised, but for shits and giggles how would you spend 135M in cap space? The 135 number assumes Quinn is gone.
First on offense. We already have Fields, Mooney, Jones, Kmet, Whitehair, Patrick, and Jenkins returning. All those guys are gonna be starters in 2023 IMO. Then you also have Herbert and Abner under contract as well and I believe one of those guys could emerge and be a starter as well.

Quinten Nelson-17M
Add to the dream a 1st round stud LT
That would give the Bears
QB- Fields
RB- Herbert/Abner/Day 2 pick?
WR- Deebo, Mooney, Velus 🤩

OC- Patrick
THAT could be an incredibly sexy offense. 3 dynamic recievers behind that OL? With a much improved Fields? Oof.

The bears have an insane amount of cap space next year. They're obviously gonna use a lot of that to resign guys that fit this year but they should absolutely be players in free agency.
As far as a breakout goes, I really think Pringle is gonna become a guy who's looked at as a legit top 2 WR on a team and Kmet emerges as a tight end we don't look to replace.
If we can talk rookies here, I kinda like Abnar a lot and think he gets a lot more play than people think. I like him more than Herbert honestly.

I think there are 4 teams who are obviously worse than the Bears and they are Carolina, Seattle, Atlanta and Houston. The rest of the league has a case to be better than the bears. I do think the Bears, if everything works out CAN we 7-8 games, but I wouldn't be shocked if they win less.

Tyke Tolbert has "High expectations" for Pettis. The problem with him has always said to be lack of motivation. I don't expect it, but it'd be nice if something does finally click. Imagine running 4 wide sets with Mooney, Velus, Pettis, and Pringle(who's 40 time doesn't really show it, but he's fast fast).

A couple articles just kinda hit me here. In this first article it talks about how big the play action game is in a wide zone system. Last year the Bears ran the 2nd fewest play actions. Soooo it got me thinking, how was Fields running the play action in college? Turns out he was one of best....
Encouraging sign for his transition into the new offense. Also perhaps another point for the Nagy didn't properly use Fields argument.

I think the thing that a lot of people will look at is the fact that the roster is largely unproven. I get that. Until they prove it, a lot of people are gonna be down on the bears....They could be very bad, but they could also be pretty good if these guys "Prove it."
Legit, up and down this roster there's maybe 5 proven guys. Even those guys have scheme related questions. How do Whitehair and Monty translate to a wide zone? Can Quinn still play with his hand in the dirt? How does Roquan play in whatever position they have him at in the 4-3? How does Mooney play now that he's the definite #1(even though he saw more attention as the season went on and Robinson sucked)?
The rest of the guys are largely unproven. Outside of maybe a guy like Patrick who has already been in the system.
I am confident in a lot of these guys though. I definitely see more than 2 wins. I took the over at 6.5 wins, but I only see it at 7 wins.

One thing that I think has got to be said again about Velus is Poles sat down with Fields and identified Jones as a guy Fields would like to throw to. I think that means something. That's your QBs guy.

I'm still not sure there will be a "Traditional" X WR and I'm not sure that's really the worst thing KC showed us that it isn't really necessary to have that big bodied WR out there. I hope Velus gets some serious rub and gets to show us what he can do. I love the speed the WR group has.

The fact they havent signed any more OL , does than mean they are satisficed with the competition they have there? I would think they would sign one more vet OT. They have Davenport , so the only upgrade over him would be Brown or Fisher, otherwise its a side step. What I would like to see is they sign J C Treeter and move Patrick to RG.
Ehhh, until Brown and Fisher sign, I still think the bears land one. I'd love Trettor but I think they love the fact that Patrick knows the offense and I think they wanna keep him there.

I think we could see Herbert or Ebner get a good chunk of targets in the passing game. Ebner intrigues me quite a bit in a Cohen type roll. He looks like such a threat in the passing game.

Certainly possible. I'd venture to believe next year, assuming mediocrity from both the position and the team, LT is gonna be where they look to next year.
I still hope/expect Brown or Fisher this year but I assume it's gonna be on a 1 year deal. I'd love to be wrong and Borum, Jenkins, or one of the rookies step up in a big big way but I don't expect it.
The WR class is supposed to be loaded again next year so it's still a possibility and I certainly wouldn't be mad though. As a huge Marvin Harrison fan, his son should be in next year's class and is likely a first round pick out of Ohio State.

Totally agree as I have going into the draft as well. I was the guy making the effort to point out that even a day 2 WR wasn't all that necessary, but alas, they even addressed it in round 3.
This offense can be really dynamic in a lot of different ways that we don't even know yet. Are they gonna run Fields more? Are they gonna get the full back involved in the passing game? Will they use Ebner in a Cohen type roll?
There is a ton of speed on this team. This is a team that right now I'd love to coach. The big names aren't there, but I think it's gonna be a lot of fun to watch.

One note I wanna throw out there on Velus. In his time at USC Amon St. Brown, Michael Pitmann Jr., and Drake London were there. That's 2 guys that have already produced really well in the NFL and a guy who just got drafted early in the 1st round. The Vols QB situation was absolutely dreadful in his time there and they still had a WR go in the 3rd last year too. When finally given some time to shine, he did just that, with a terrible QB. I don't think he'll ever be a #1 but if he comes in and gives you 600+ yards, I'll be content.

I've pointed this out a few times, but I will again note that Pringle was the tallest WR on the KC roster the past few years and they have thrived.
I just use KC as an example because it's the easiest one to use with Poles and Pringle coming over. I'm sure there are other teams who don't have WRs over 6'1".

It's possible. I just think Poles thinks highly of Pringle and now hopefully the same thoughts on Velus. That makes St. Brown the #4 or 5 depending on thoughts about David Moore, who has had some NFL success in Seattle.
Poles knows Pringle very well coming from KC. Hard to really put up huge numbers when you're playing on a team with 2 future hall of famers.

To me this largely depends on who is available. I know the chances of the top top guys, who are still young, hitting the market are slim, buy if they do, the Bears need to pounce.
If a guy like Quinten Nelson hits the market, there's no reason the Bears shouldn't be in on him. Same for guys like DK or Deebo(assuming he once again proves to be a stud.)
If the top guy is up there in age and the Bears are not close to contenders, then no, they shouldn't be in on them.
