Cap Space

It looks like the Bears created enough cap space for operating during the season after restructuring Jaylon Johnson's contract (saved $8M on this year's cap). However, I don't think there is room to add any big ticket guys like Zadarius Smith. At most it will be a vet minimum guy that doesn't impact the cap.

Poles has already set the core players up with the contracts he gave out. We don't have a lot of cap space for two years. Our improvement will be from players they drafted and roster players improving.  We will get to see first hand if his roster development are winners.

If we have a winning season, probably would say he did a good job.  If not we now have a great coaching staff to get player development and it will take another year to fix.

These are my opinions, I don't pretend to know what Poles and BJ think. The fact I need to say this every time I post now seems condescending to the members of this forum but we  do what we need to do to try to get along.

The player who signed a contract yet hinted he needs more money.

I hope Poles restructured him to help the team in the future so they dont get stuck with less dead cap if he demands a trade.

Last year we had the least dead cap space in the league by a big margin. Say what you want about Poles but he has did a good job and managing the cap so far. People got paid and after a yr or two, those contracts look team friendly in comparison to contracts handed out currently. JJ may end up being a problem with a I want to pay more but it wont happen this yr. His contract ends in 2027.

The cap is more flexible than people think it is. And it goes up every year too, so signing a big ticket player is almost always possible.

And while Id entertain that idea for a true stud, I dont think Zadarius Smith fits that definition. If it's a true top 5 impact edge rusher, then it is possible, but otherwise you dont stretch your cap like that for most players.

Then again, I dont know what Smith is asking for. Im discussing the hyposthetical situation where someone wants $40M a year. That IS possible, but it might require some trades etc.

SO Im not saying we should do this, just that it is financially possible if the right situation were to come up.

For example, the trade value for Parsons was more likely the bigger impediment to us having him (or someone like him) here than the cap space.

Poles is doing great with the cap.  I am not happy with JJ thinking he is the best thing since sliced bread.  He wanted more money/early extension and Poles gave him a deal that he accepted.  Now he is whispering his deal doesnt look so good.  Well maybe he should of waited one year instead of demanding the early extension. Knowing every year those numbers grow.

I dont know what todays restructuring did, but it gave the Bears a little more room this season. I just hope Poles has JJ holding out next year on his radar.

The extra cap this year might have to go to RB or DE as those two positions have injury concerns.

JJ was whispering he wanted more money but knows he has to play well to demand more money. I hope he gets 10 ints. and is all pro. We will deal with a better contract later.

I agree. Poles has been pretty disciplined on the cap. The story is out on Dayo, who is a significant dent in our cap, but in general Poles has been disciplined.

I totally agree that the writing is on the wall with Jaylon Johnson. He's good, but he's not worth what he's going to want. A trade seems likely at some point.

I think this was just JJ joking around after he saw the insane big money deals and media types, as they like to do for clicks, took it seriously.  Whenever you hear JJ talk his top priority is winning.

I hope this is right and it's just a narrative. I read his quote, but I didnt hear his tone of voice or body language, or even the context. So if that's what it was, then great!

I used to listen to JJ on the score once a week.  He is pretty careful about his words, so it could have been him joking.  He does like to do that.

He did want his money last time feeling like a top CB in the league on a rookie contract.  I don't mind seeing the team secure him early as it made sense and they can spread it out over his last year on the rookie deal, so it helped each way.  If he can be a top CB and team leader this year, then the Bears can listen if he demands, but they do not have to oblige or can shop him.

Looking at the contracts, I am still loving the Dalman signing.  The 2 Centers with more APY than Dalman are from PHI and KC, pretty good company.

Dalman is probably not the third best OC in the NFL but but he is top 10 and is a huge upgrade for what we had. We have an out in two yrs if we can develop someone. Newman has taken some center snaps and I still think Ricky Stromberg has upside. I dont care if we gave him big money,. he is a key to our line improving.
