The move could involve a veteran linebacker from the Bears. Harris confirms the trade is not official yet. Harris was dealt in 2007 for a fifth-round pick to open up playing time for Adam Archuleta. That didn't work out so well. In Carolina, Harris had three workmanlike years, missing only four starts. The second year he got burned a few times. The Bears traded him and EVERYONE in the forum thought we got a good deal and were happy he was gone. Certainly Wright stays, and you have to think Harris does too if we trades for him. That leaves Afalava, Payne, Steltz, Manning, and Bullocks. We started playing Harris at FS, and that is when he was looking like crap. Or when Brown was playing FS, there were many times we played Brown, our FS, in the box and dropped Harris back deep. On paper, the depth chart may read one thing, but the way we used the players was different. Remember, Lovie thinks the safeties are interchangable. Harris sucked playing centerfield. Personally, I was never a fan either way. Even at SS, I felt he was late on reads/breaks and dragged down players from behind rather (after a good pickup) rather than knock them back. I agree many were happy to see Harris go. At the same time, I don't think many expected our safety situation to become as bad as it has, nor did most expect us to go through so many players trying to find a replacement. I still don't think Harris is that great, but he is better than what we have. While I think some of the players we have could play SS, if we intend to lineup a rookie at FS, having a veteran at strong is a better way to go. Two, as for giving up Williams, the staff didn't really seem to think a ton of him at SLB, and thought of him more as a WLB, which is a position not likely to need a replacement for a while. If Williams is not going to do anything but play special teams and ride the pine, may as well get something for him. He would be set to be an UFA after this year, so better to lose him and get something back. Maybe you are right. Maybe JW was the only LB CAR would take in the trade. I always liked Jamar Williams' potential, but Chris Harris belongs as a Bear. He'll be a big upgrade over Steltz/Afalava/Payne...plus he's a real tone-setter in the secondary, the way Wright hopefully can be too. The Bears could have TWO competent safeties this year! And between Harris and Peanut, maybe we'll see some more of the forced fumbles that used to be the defense's bread and butter back in 2005-2006. As for who stays and who goes, I could see us moving Manning back to nickel corner (since I doubt the staff will want to bench a high-2nd-rounder) and keeping 4 or 5 safeties on the roster. I'd say it's probably Steltz as the backup FS, Afalava as the backup SS, and maybe Payne too. Bullocks should be gone. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

To me it's sort of like trading a younger Chester Taylor (Williams) when you already have AP (Briggs) for a one dimensional TE Olsen(Harris) when you already have Scheffler(Bears Safeties).
