First, let me say it has been a joy watching him all these years and I am glad he tied the return touchdown record today. That being said, he has clearly lost a step and I would not pay him more than the veteran minimum next year to return.

Peace :dabears

Agreed.

I am truly happy he got the record in a Bears uni...

He'll be elsewhere next year.

Lost a step but runs a 4.48

For vet min I'd keep him plus I think we'd get a little discount on the salary cap by doing so. When you consider the salary cap discount it's not worth pushing a rookie out there to return kicks IMO. To save special teams $$ I think Weems has to go and I prefer to fill his spot via a rookie or vet FA WR, preferably one with speed to mix in with our giants on the outside but can backfill on special teams as well. It's not that hard to find those guys among FA WRs coming off their rookie contract. Keep Hester back there as primary KR/PR for another season. If Hester demands far more than vet min and can find another team to pay him that then goodbye and good luck to him.

I think you give him vet min plus a little "thanks for being a Bear legend"-money, like they should have done with Urlacher. If money needs to be saved, then save it by cutting Weems like you said.

The thanks was the huge arse contract that Angelo gave him. Urlacher was offered more than the vet minimum and they gave him a thank you a few years back when they extended him in the middle of his contract.

if we can keep him at a reasonable price for just return duties, then cut Weems, why not see what Marques Williams can bring to the return game in weems place. He's got the quicks for it.
